Recently in [1] a new class of maximal monotone operators has been introduced. In this note we study domain range properties as well as connections with other classes and calculus rules for these operators we called strongly-representable. While not every maximal monotone operator is strongly-representable, every maximal monotone NI operator is strongly-representable, and every strongly representable operator is locally maximal monotone, maximal monotone locally, and ANA. As a consequence the conjugate of the Fitzpatrick function of a maximal monotone operator is not necessarily a representative function.
In this paper, we unify the theory of SSD spaces and the theory of strongly representable sets, and we apply our results to the theory of the various classes of maximally monotone sets. In particular, we prove that type (ED), dense type, type (D), type (NI) and strongly representable are equivalent concepts and, consequently, that the known properties of strongly representable sets follow from known properties of sets of type (ED).
In this work we are concerned with maximality of monotone operators representable by certain convex functions in non-reflexive Banach spaces. We also prove that these maximal monotone operators satisfy a Bronsted-Rockafellar type property. We show that if a function in XxX^* and its conjugate are above the duality product in their respective domains, then this function represents a maximal monotone operator.
The injective tensor product of normal representable bimodules over von Neumann algebras is shown to be normal. The usual Banach module projective tensor product of central representable bimodules over an Abelian C$^*$-algebra is shown to be representable. A normal version of the projective tensor product is introduced for central normal bimodules.
In this paper, we unify the theory of SSD spaces, part of the theory of strongly representable multifunctions, and the theory of the equivalence of various classes of maximally monotone multifunctions.
We use the injective envelope to study quasimultipliers of operator spaces. We prove that all representable operator algebra products that an operator space can be endowed with are induced by quasimultipliers. We obtain generalizations of the Banach-Stone theorem.
We characterise those Banach spaces $X$ which satisfy that $L(Y,X)$ is octahedral for every non-zero Banach space $Y$. They are those satisfying that, for every finite dimensional subspace $Z$, $\ell_\infty$ can be finitely-representable in a part of $X$ kind of $\ell_1$-orthogonal to $Z$. We also prove that $L(Y,X)$ is octahedral for every $Y$ if, and only if, $L(\ell_p^n,X)$ is octahedral for every $n\in\mathbb N$ and $1<p<\infty$. Finally, we find examples of Banach spaces satisfying the above conditions like $\Lip(M)$ spaces with octahedral norms or $L_1$-preduals with the Daugavet propert…
We give, for general Banach spaces, a characterization of the sequential lower limit of maximal monotone operators of type (D) and prove its representability. As a consequence, using a recent extension of the Moreau-Yosida regularization for type (D) operators, we extend to general Banach spaces the definitions of the variational sum of monotone operators and the variational composition of monotone operators with continuous linear mappings, and we prove that both operators are representable.
Strongly irreducible operators can be considered as building blocks for bounded linear operators on complex separable Hilbert spaces. Many bounded linear operators can be written as direct sums of at most countably many strongly irreducible operators. In this paper, we show that a bounded linear operator A is similar to a direct integral of strongly irreducible operators if its commutant contains a bounded maximal abelian set of idempotents. We find that bounded linear operators which are similar to direct integrals of strongly irreducible operators form a dense subset of L(H) in the operator …
We present an abstract result that characterizes the coincidence of certain classes of linear operators with the class of Cohen strongly summing linear operators. Our argument is extended to multilinear operators and, as a consequence, we establish a few alternative characterizations for the class of Cohen strongly summing multilinear operators.
We give a Jensen operator inequality for strongly convex functions. As a corollary, we improve operator Holder-McCarthy inequality under suitable conditions.
In this paper, we are interested in the properties of a new class of operators, recently introduced by Shkarin, called strongly $n$-supercyclic operators. This notion is stronger than $n$-supercyclicity. We prove that such operators have interesting spectral properties and give examples and counter-examples answering some natural questions asked by Shkarin.
In the first part, we obtain sharp results for L^2 boundedness of strongly singular operators on the Heisenberg group. We also define the oscillating convolution operators on the Heisenberg group and study their boundedness properties. In the second part, we obtain the boundedness on Hardy spaces.
This paper concerns three classes of real-valued functions on intervals, operator monotone functions, operator convex functions, and strongly operator convex functions. Strongly operator convex functions were previously treated in [3] and [4], where operator algebraic semicontinuity theory or operator theory were substantially used. In this paper we provide an alternate treatment that uses only operator inequalities (or even just matrix inequalities). We also show that if t_0 is a point in the domain of a continuous function f, then f is operator monotone if and only if (f(t) - f(t_0))/(t - t_…
In this paper we introduce two new classes of operators that we call strongly order continuous and strongly $σ$-order continuous operators. An operator $T:E\rightarrow F$ between two Riesz spaces is said to be strongly order continuous (resp. strongly $σ$-order continuous), if $x _α\xrightarrow{uo}0$ (resp. $x _n \xrightarrow{uo}0$) in $E$ implies $Tx _α\xrightarrow{o}0$ (resp. $Tx _n \xrightarrow{o}0$) in $F$. We give some conditions under which order continuity will be equivalent to strongly order continuity of operators on Riesz spaces. We show that the collection of all $so$-continuous lin…
We give a generalization of the Jordan canonical form theorem for a class of bounded linear operators on complex separable Hilbert spaces in terms of direct integrals. Precisely, we study the uniqueness of strongly irreducible decompositions of the operators on the Hilbert spaces up to similarity.
We study the ideals of linear operators between Banach spaces determined by the transformation of vector-valued sequences involving the new sequence space introduced by Karn and Sinha \cite{karnsinha} and the classical spaces of absolutely, weakly and Cohen strongly summable sequences. As applications, we prove a new factorization theorem for absolutely summing operators and a contribution to the existence of infinite dimensional spaces formed by non-absolutely summing operators is given.
We consider the space of molecules endowed with the transpose version of the Chevet-Saphar norm and we identify its dual space with the space of Lipschitz strongly p-summing operators. We also extend some old results to the category of Lipschitz mappings and we give a factorization result of Lipschitz (p,r,s)-summing operators.
Every absolutely summing linear operator is weakly compact. However, for strongly summing multilinear operators and polynomials - one of the most natural extensions of the linear case to the non linear framework - weak compactness does not hold in general. We show that a subclass of the class of strongly summing multilinear operators/polynomials, sharing its main properties such as Grothendieck's Theorem, Pietsch Domination Theorem and Dvoretzky-Rogers Theorem, has even better properties like weak compactness and a natural factorization theorem.
In this work, we establish results on the continuity of strongly singular Calderón-Zygmund operators of type $σ$ on Hardy spaces $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $0<p\leq 1$ assuming a weaker $L^{s}-$type Hörmander condition on the kernel. Operators of this type include appropriated classes of pseudodifferential operators $OpS^{m}_{σ,b}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and operators associated to standard $δ$-kernels of type $σ$ introduced by Álvarez and Milman. As application, we show that strongly singular Calderón-Zygmund operators are bounded from $H^{p}_{w}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to $L^{p}_{w}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, where $w$ bel…
Let $T$ be a bounded quaternionic normal operator on a right quaternionic Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We show that $T$ can be factorized in a strongly irreducible sense, that is, for any $δ>0$ there exist a compact operator $K$ with $\|K\|< δ$, a partial isometry $W$ and a strongly irreducible operator $S$ on $\mathcal{H}$ such that \begin{equation*} T = (W+K) S. \end{equation*} We illustrate our result with an example. We also prove a quaternionic version of the Riesz decomposition theorem and as a consequence, show that if the spherical spectrum of a bounded quaternionic operator (need not …
Considering the successful theory of multiple summing multilinear operators as a prototype, we introduce the classes of multiple Cohen strongly p-summing multilinear operators and polynomials. The adequacy of these classes under the viewpoint of the theory of multilinear and polynomial ideals and holomorphy types is discussed in detail. Some abstract results are also proved in the abstract setting of the full general Pietsch Domination Theorem due to Pellegrino, Santos and Seoane-Sepúlveda.
Let $A$ and $B$ be compact operators over a topological space $X$ and suppose that these operators are normal and have same distinct eigenvalues at each point. By obstruction theory, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be strongly unitarily equivalent. When $X=S^1$, we also give a sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be approximately unitarily equivalent with some assumption on their eigenvalues.
By extending the classical quantitative approximation results for positive and linear operators in $L^{p}([0, 1]), 1\le p \le +\infty$ of Berens and DeVore in 1978 and of Swetits and Wood in 1983 to the more general case of sublinear, monotone and strongly translatable operators, in this paper we obtain quantitative estimates in terms of the second order and third order moduli of smoothness, in Korovkin type theorems. Applications to concrete examples are included and an open question concerning interpolation theory for sublinear, monotone and strongly translatable operators is raised.
We study linear operators $T$ on Banach spaces for which there exists a $C_0$-semigroup $(T(t))_{t\geq 0}$ such that $T=T(1)$. We present a necessary condition in terms of the spectral value 0 and give classes of examples where this can or cannot be achieved.
We investigate the subject of speed of mixing for operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces which are strongly mixing with respect to a nondegenerate Gaussian measure. We prove that there is no way to find a uniform speed of mixing for all square-integrable functions. We give classes of regular functions for which the sequence of correlations decreases to zero with speed $n^{-α}$ when the eigenvectors associated to unimodular eigenvalues of the operator are parametrized by an $α$-Hölderian $\mathbb{T}$-eigenvector field.
We prove that on $\mathbb{R}^n$, there is no $N$-supercyclic operator with $1\leq N< \lfloor \frac{n+1}{2}\rfloor$ i.e. if $\mathbb{R}^n$ has an $N$ dimensional subspace whose orbit under $T$ is dense in $\mathbb{R}^n$, then $N$ is greater than $\lfloor\frac{n+1}{2}\rfloor$. Moreover, this value is optimal. We then consider the case of strongly $N$-supercyclic operators. An operator $T$ is strongly $N$-supercyclic if $\mathbb{R}^n$ has an $N$-dimensional subspace whose orbit under $T$ is dense in $\mathbb{P}_N(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the $N$-th Grassmannian. We prove that strong $N$-supercyclicity doe…
The goal of this article is to develop a theory for direct integrals of $C_0$-semigroups on Hilbert spaces parallel to the recent approach by Lachowicz and Moszyński for direct sums of Banach spaces, diagonal operators, and semigroups. In it we deal with the existence and characterisation of semigroups, asymptotic rates, and questions of decomposability.
In [B1, Theorem 2.36] we proved the equivalence of six conditions on a continuous function f on an interval. These conditions define a subset of the set of operator convex functions, whose elements are called strongly operator convex. Two of the six conditions involve operator-algebraic semicontinuity theory, as given by C. Akemann and G. Pedersen in [AP], and the other four conditions do not involve operator algebras at all. Two of these conditions are operator inequalities, one is a global condition on f, and the fourth is an integral representation of f stronger than the usual integral repr…
In this paper, we analyze recurrent $C_{0}$-semigroups of bounded operators on Banach spaces. We also introduce the notion of a (uniformly) $C_{0}$-rigid semigroups of bounded operators and give a structural characterization of them. A characterization of a Li-Yorke chaoticity of the translation semigroup $(T(t))_{t\geq 0}$ on weighted spaces of integrable functions and continuous functions in terms of admissible weight function is given. The recurrent $C_0$-semigroups induced by semiflows are characterized on the spaces of integrable functions and of spaces of continuous functions.
A theorem of Godefroy and Shapiro states that non-trivial convolution operators on the space of entire functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ are hypercyclic. Moreover, it was shown by Bonilla and Grosse-Erdmann that they have frequently hypercyclic functions of exponential growth. On the other hand, in the infinite dimensional setting, the Godefroy-Shapiro theorem has been extended to several spaces of entire functions defined on Banach spaces. We prove that on all these spaces, non-trivial convolution operators are strongly mixing with respect to a gaussian probability measure of full support. For the …
We use Arveson's notion of strongly peaking representation to generalize uniqueness theorems for free spectrahedra and matrix convex sets which admit minimal presentations. A fully compressed separable operator system necessarily generates the C*-envelope and is such that the identity is the direct sum of strongly peaking representations. In particular, a fully compressed presentation of a separable operator system is unique up to unitary equivalence. Under various additional assumptions, minimality conditions are sufficient to determine a separable operator system uniquely.
We give an overview of the F-product construction and the corresponding nonstandard constructions for strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups of linear operators, and show that (in the case of bounded ultrapowers) both constructs are isomorphic. From this we also deduce a "classical" corollary about the nonexistace of certain semigroups.
We study several classes of indecomposable representations of quivers on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and their relation. Many examples are constructed using strongly irreducible operators. Some problems in operator theory are rephrased in terms of representations of quivers. We shall show two kinds of constructions of quite non-trivial indecomposable Hilbert representations of the Kronecker quiver such that their endomorphism rings are trivial, which are called transitive. One is a perturbation of a weighted shift operator by a rank-one operator. The other one is a modification of an u…
We study operators of the form $$ L=\sum_{|α|,|β|\le n} D^αc_{α,β} D^β, x\in\mathbb R^n $$ provided that the coefficients of the main symbol corresponding to the indices $|α|=|β|=m$ are continuous while the other ones are distributions. Assuming that the main symbol defines the strongly elliptic operator we find sufficient conditions for the coefficients $c_{α,β}(x)$ which guarantee that the operator $L$ is well defined. In particular, if $c_{α,β}(x)$ belong to the spaces of multipliers from $H_2^{m-|α|}$ to $H_2^{|β|-m}$ then $L$ defines a maximal sectorial operator in $L_2(\mathbb R^n)$. We …
The correspondence between the class of nonexpansive mappings and the class of maximally monotone operators via the reflected resolvents of the latter has played an instrumental role in the convergence analysis of the splitting methods. Indeed, the performance of some of these methods, e.g., Douglas-Rachford and Peaceman-Rachford methods hinges on iterating the so-called splitting operator associated with the individual operators. This splitting operator is a function of the composition of the reflected resolvents of the underlying operators. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of …
We give a self-contained and streamlined exposition of a generation theorem for C0-semigroups based on the method of boundary triplets. We apply this theorem to port-Hamiltonian systems where we discuss recent results appearing in stability and control theory. We give detailed proofs and require only a basic knowledge of operator and semigroup theory.
We introduce unbounded strongly irreducible operators and transitive operators. These operators are related to a certain class of indecomposable Hilbert representations of quivers on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. We regard the theory of Hilbert representations of quivers is a generalization of the theory of unbounded operators. A non-zero Hilbert representation of a quiver is said to be transitive if the endomorphism algebra is trivial. If a Hilbert representation of a quiver is transitive, then it is indecomposable. But the converse is not true. Let $Γ$ be a quiver whose underlying und…
We study mapping properties of Toeplitz operators associated to a finite positive Borel measure on a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain D in n complex variables. In particular, we give sharp conditions on the measure ensuring that the associated Toeplitz operator maps the Bergman space A^p(D) into A^r(D) with r>p, generalizing and making more precise results by Cuckovic and McNeal. To do so, we give a geometric characterization of Carleson measures and of vanishing Carleson measures of weighted Bergman spaces in terms of the intrinsic Kobayashi geometry of the domain, generalizing to this se…
The problem of approximating the discrete spectra of families of self-adjoint operators that are merely strongly continuous is addressed. It is well-known that the spectrum need not vary continuously (as a set) under strong perturbations. However, it is shown that under an additional compactness assumption the spectrum does vary continuously, and a family of symmetric finite-dimensional approximations is constructed. An important feature of these approximations is that they are valid for the entire family uniformly. An application of this result to the study of plasma instabilities is illustra…
An algebra of bounded linear operators on a Banach space is said to be {\em strongly compact} if its unit ball is precompact in the strong operator topology, and a bounded linear operator on a Banach space is said to be {\em strongly compact} if the algebra with identity generated by the operator is strongly compact. Our interest in this notion stems from the work of Lomonosov on the existence of invariant subspaces. We provide a local spectral condition that is sufficient for a bounded linear operator on a Banach space to be strongly compact. This condition is then applied to describe a large…
In this paper we study mapping properties of Toeplitz-like operators on weighted Bergman spaces of bounded strongly pseudconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$. In particular we prove that a Toeplitz operator built using as kernel a weighted Bergman kernel of weight $β$ and integrating against a measure $μ$ maps continuously (when $β$ is large enough) a weighted Bergman space $A^{p_1}_{α_1}(D)$ into a weighted Bergman space $A^{p_2}_{α_2}(D)$ if and only if $μ$ is a $(λ,γ)$-skew Carleson measure, where $λ=1+\frac{1}{p_1}-\frac{1}{p_2}$ and $γ=\frac{1}λ\left(β+\frac{α_1}{p_1}-\frac{α_2}{p_2}\right)$.…
In this work we extend the $L^1$-Björk-Sjölin theory of strongly singular convolution operators to arbitrary graded Lie groups. Our criteria are presented in terms of the oscillating Hörmander condition due to Björk and Sjölin of the kernel of the operator, and the decay of its group Fourier transform is measured in terms of the infinitesimal representation of an arbitrary Rockland operator. The historical result by Björk and Sjölin is re-obtained in the case of the Euclidean space.
Let $E$ be the Banach space constructed by Read (J. London Math. Soc. 1989) such that the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ admits a discontinuous derivation. We show that $\mathscr{B}(E)$ has a singular, admissible extension which splits algebraically, but does not split strongly. This answers a natural question going back to the work of Bade, Dales, and Lykova (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999), and complements recent results of Laustsen and Skillicorn (C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris, to appear).
