We have made a new survey of emission-line stars in the W5E HII region to investigate the population of PMS stars near the OB stars by using the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph 2 (WFGS2). A total of 139 H-alpha emission stars were detected and their g'i'-photometry was performed. The spatial distribution of them shows three aggregates, i.e., two aggregates near the bright-rimmed clouds at the edge of W5E HII region (BRC 13 and BRC 14) and one near the exciting O7V star. The age and mass of each H-alpha star were estimated from the extinction corrected color-magnitude diagram and theoretical evolutionary tracks. We found, for the first time in this region, that the young stars near the exciting star are systematically older (4 Myr) than those near the edge of the HII region (1 Myr). This result supports that the formation of stars proceed sequentially from the center of HII region to the eastern bright rim. We further suggest a possibility that the birth of low mass stars near the exciting star of HII region precede the production of massive OB stars in the pre-existing molecular cloud.
The HII regions around quasars and galaxies at redshifts beyond the epoch of reionisation will provide prime targets for upcoming 21cm campaigns using a new generation of low-frequency radio observatories. Here we show that the boundaries of these HII regions will not be sharp. Rather, the clustering of sources near massive galaxies results in a neutral fraction that rises gradually towards large radii from an interior value near zero. A neutral fraction corresponding to the global background value is typically reached at a distance of 2-5 times the radius of the HII region around the central …
Spinning dust appears to be the best explanation for the anomalous emission that has been observed at $\sim 10-60$ GHz. One of the best examples of spinning dust comes from a HII region in the Perseus molecular cloud. Observations of other HII regions also show tentative evidence for excess emission at frequencies $\sim 30$ GHz, although at lower emissivity levels. A new detection of excess emission at 31 GHz in the HII region RCW175 has been made. The most plausible explanation again comes from spinning dust. HII regions are a good place to look for spinning dust as long as accurate radio dat…
Here we present a brief overview of UC HII regions with EE (UC HII+EE) including our most recent effort aimed at searching for UC HII regions associated with extended emission.
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make observations of a sample of eight young ultra-compact HII regions, selected on the basis that they have associated class II methanol maser emission. We have made observations sensitive to both compact and extended structures and find both to be present in most sources. The scale of the extended emission in our sample is in general less than that observed towards samples based on IRAS properties, or large single-dish flux densities. Our observations are consistent with a scenario where extended and compact radio continuum emissio…
We present optical spectra of 14 emission-line stars in M33s giant HII regions NGC 592, NGC 595 and NGC 604: five of them are known WR stars, for which we present a better quality spectrogram, eight were WR candidates based on narrow-band imagery and one is a serendipitous discovery. Spectroscopy confirms the power of interference filter imagery to detect emission-line stars down to an equivalent width of about 5 A in crowded fields. We have also used archival HST/WFPC2 images to correctly identify emission-line stars in NGC 592 and NGC 588. emission-line stars in NGC 592 and NGC 588.
We have carried out 21 cm radio continuum observations of 16 UC HII regions using the VLA (D-array) in search of associated extended emission. We have also observed H76$_α$ recombination line towards all the sources and He76$_α$ line at the positions with strong H76$_α$ line emission. The UC HII regions have simple morphologies and large (>10) ratios of single-dish to VLA fluxes. Extended emission was detected towards all the sources. The extended emission consists of one to several compact components and a diffuse extended envelope. All the UC HII regions but two are located in the compact co…
We build, as far as theory will permit, self consistent model HII regions around central clusters of aging stars. These produce strong emission line diagnostics applicable to either individual HII regions in galaxies, or to the integrated emission line spectra of disk or starburst galaxies. The models assume that the expansion and internal pressure of individual HII regions is driven by the net input of mechanical energy from the central cluster, be it through winds or supernova events. This eliminates the ionization parameter as a free variable, replacing it with a parameter which depends on …
The combination of stellar population synthesis models and photoionization models allows a better understanding of the spectral features of HII regions and HII galaxies. In this work we show that sampling effects in the initial mass function (IMF) are very important in the low cluster mass case. To this aim, we compute photoionization models ionized by realistic clusters made up of various combinations of individual stars and clusters made up with a synthesis model. We discuss the differences in the position on diagnostic diagrams and their implications.
We constructed diagnostic diagrams using emission line ratios and equivalent widths observed in several samples of HII galaxies. The diagrams are compared to predictions from new photoionization models for evolving starbursts. We find that HII galaxies from objective-prism surveys are not reproduced by models of instantaneous starbursts surrounded by constant density, ionization bounded HII regions. The observed relations between emission line ratios and Hb equivalent width (W(Hb)) can be understood if older stellar populations are not negligible in HII galaxies. Also, different dust obscurati…
We present visible and near IR images of the compact HII region Sh 152. Some of these images reveal the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) around 698 nm and emission from Unidentified Infra Red Bands (UIRBs) at 3.3 and 6.2 micron. Other images show the near infrared (7-12 micron) continuous emission of the nebula. The ERE emission is found to coincide with the ionized region and significantly differ from the UIRBs location. Also some evidence is found in favor of grains as carriers for ERE.
Spectrophotometry constitutes a unique way to obtain the whole diagnostics (density, temperature, ionic abundances) of ionized gas nebulae, thus providing invaluable information about the objects where they reside. If such nebulae are in the low excitation regime, the diagnostics have to relie on the observation of the more intense emission lines. We have compiled data for a sample of HII regions, GEHR and HII galaxies and compared them with results derived from photoionizacion models whose parameters cover the physical conditions of the nebulae. Our results confirm a lower uncertainty for the…
The slow and dense wind from a symbiotic red giant can be significantly deflected toward the orbital plane by the gravitational pull of the companion star. In such an environment, the ionizing radiation from the companion creates a highly asymmetric HII region. We present three-dimensional models of HII regions in symbiotic S-type systems, for which we calculate radio maps and radio spectra. We show that the standard assumption of spherically symmetric RG wind results in wrong shapes, sizes and spectra of ionized regions, which in turn affects the observational estimates of orbital separation …
We use cosmological simulations of reionization to predict the effect of large HII regions around individual high-redshift quasars on the possible signal from the redshifted 21cm line of neutral hydrogen in the pre-reionization era. We show that these HII regions appear as ``spectral dips'' in frequency space with equivalent widths in excess of 3 mK MHz or depths in excess of about 1.5 mK, and that they are by far the most prominent cosmological signals in the redshifted HI distribution. These spectral dips are expected to be present in almost every line of sight. If the spectral dips of a lar…
We report the Chandra detection of hard X-ray emission from the Welch ring in W49A, an organized structure of ultra-compact (UC) HII regions containing a dozen nascent early-type stars. Two UC HII regions are associated with hard X-ray emission in a deep Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer image exposed for 96.7 ks. One of the two X-ray sources has no near-infrared counterpart and is extended by ~5 arcsec, or ~0.3 pc, at a distance of ~11.4 kpc, which is spatially aligned with the cometary radio continuum emission associated with the UC HII region. The X-ray spectrum of the emission, when fit wi…
HI spectra towards the W3 HII complex are presented and used to probe the Galactic structure and interstellar medium conditions between us and this region. The overall shape of the spectra is consistent with the predictions of the Two-Arm Spiral Shock model wherein the gas found in the -40 km/s to -50 km/s range has been accelerated by some 20 km/s from its rotation curve velocity. Spin temperatures of ~100 K are derived for the Local Arm gas, lower than found in a previous, similar study towards DR 7. For the interarm region, values on the order of 300 K are found, implying a negligible filli…
We present evidence for anomalous microwave emission in the RCW175 \hii region. Motivated by 33 GHz $13\arcmin$ resolution data from the Very Small Array (VSA), we observed RCW175 at 31 GHz with the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) at a resolution of $4\arcmin$. The region consists of two distinct components, G29.0-0.6 and G29.1-0.7, which are detected at high signal-to-noise ratio. The integrated flux density is $5.97\pm0.30$ Jy at 31 GHz, in good agreement with the VSA. The 31 GHz flux density is $3.28\pm0.38$ Jy ($8.6σ$) above the expected value from optically thin free-free emission based on…
We present observations of the H91$α$ recombination line emission towards a sample of nine HII regions associated with 6.7-GHz methanol masers, and report arcsecond-scale emission around compact cores. We derive physical parameters for our sources, and find that although simple hydrostatic models of region evolution reproduce the observed region sizes, they significantly underestimate emission measures. We argue that these findings are consistent with young source ages in our sample, and can be explained by existence of density gradients in the ionised gas.
We present observations between 14.2 and 17.9 GHz of sixteen Galactic HII regions made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI). In conjunction with data from the literature at lower radio frequencies we investigate the possibility of a spinning dust component in the spectra of these objects. We conclude that there is no significant evidence for spinning dust towards these sources and measure an average spectral index of 0.15+/-0.07 between 1.4 and 17.9 GHz for the sample.
We present a survey in the 6_{16}-5_{23} rotational water transition toward 33 galactic ultracompact HII regions. Maser emission is detected toward 18 of these sources; two are new detections. High quality spectra are provided for all 18 sources. We discuss the detection rate of this survey and the correlation of various maser properties with other physical parameters. In addition, we report wide-bandwidth (316 km/s), moderate-resolution (~ 3'') water maser observations of the HH80-81 region. We report the first detection of water maser emission at the approximate velocity of the molecular cor…
The microwave spectral energy distribution of the dusty, diffuse H II region LPH 201.663+1.643 has been interpreted by others as tentative evidence for microwave emission from spinning dust grains. We present an alternative interpretation for that particular object; specifically, that an ultracompact H II region embedded within the dust cloud would explain the available observations as well or better than spinning dust. Parameters for the size, surface brightness, and flux density of the putative ultracompact HII region, derived from the microwave observations, are within known ranges. A possi…
We present the results of a morphological study performed to a sample of Ultracompact (UC) HII regions with Extended Emission (EE) using Spitzer--IRAC imagery and 3.6 cm VLA conf. D radio-continuum (RC) maps. Some examples of the comparison between maps and images are presented. Usually there is an IR point source counterpart to the peak(s) of RC emission, at the position of the UC source. We find that the predominant EE morphology is the cometary, and in most cases is coincident with IR emission at 8.0 $μ$m. Preliminary results of Spitzer--IRAC photometry of a sub-sample of 13 UC HII regions …
In the third part of our photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346/N~66 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we focus on the large number of low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope Observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We investigate the origin of the observed broadening of the pre-main sequence population in the $V-I$, $V$ CMD. The most likely explanations are either the presence of differential reddening or an age spread among the young stars. Assuming the latter, simulations indicate that we cannot exclu…
We study the gas emission of galaxies with active star formation, consisting mostly of HII galaxies and Starbursts, as well as some Seyfert 2s, and determine chemical and physical parameters. The data consist of 19 high signal-to-noise ratio optical templates, a result of grouping 185 emission line galaxy spectra. Underlying stellar population models were subtracted from the templates in order to isolate the pure emission component. We analyse the distribution of these improved signal-to-noise ratio emission spectra in diagnostic diagrams and find that the HII templates show a smaller spread i…
We measure reddenings to HII regions in NGC 2903, NGC 1512, M51, NGC 4449 and NGC 6946 from Hubble Space Telescope Pa alpha and H alpha images. Extinctions range from A_V ~ 5 - 0 depending upon the galaxy. For the galaxies with HST images in both lines, NGC 2903, NGC 1512 and M51, the Pa alpha and H alpha emission are almost identical in morphology which implies that little emission from bright HII regions is hidden from view by regions of comparatively high extinction. The scatter in the measured extinctions is only +- 0.5 mag. We compare the reddenings we measure in five galaxies using the P…
We present a new compilation of Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies and extra-galactic HII regions showing BROAD HeII emission drawn from the literature. Relevant information on the presence of other broad emission lines (NIII 4640, CIV 5808 and others) from WR stars of WN and WC subtypes, and other existing broad nebular lines is provided. In total we include 139 known WR galaxies. Among these, 57 objects show both broad HeII and CIV features. In addition to the broad (stellar) HeII emission, a NEBULAR HeII component is well established (suspected) in 44 (54) objects. We find 19 extra-galatic HII region…
We present diffraction-limited (FWHM ~ 0.3arcsec) Gemini/T-ReCS mid-infrared (MIR: N-band or narrow-band at 8.7micron) imaging of four Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) drawn from a representative local sample. The MIR emission in the central few kpc is strikingly similar to that traced by Pa-alpha, and generally consists of bright nuclear emission and several compact circumnuclear and/or extranuclear HII regions. The central MIR emission is dominated by these powerful HII regions, consistent with the majority of AGN in this local sample of LIRGs contributing a minor part of the MIR emission.…
We present the analysis of a 38.4 ks and a 23.6 ks observation of the core of the Pleiades open cluster. The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory detected 99 X-ray sources in a 17'X17' region, including 18 of 23 Pleiades members. Five candidate Pleiades members have also been detected, confirming their cluster membership. Fifty-seven sources have no optical or near-infrared counterparts to limiting magnitudes V=22.5 and J=14.5. The unidentified X-ray sources are probably background AGN and not stars. The Chandra field of view contains seven intermediate mass…
We present spectroscopic observations of a sample of 72 emission-line objects, including mainly HII regions, in the spiral galaxy M 33. Spectra were obtained with the multi-object, wide field spectrograph AF2/WYFFOS at the 4.2m WHT telescope. Line intensities, extinction, and electron density were determined for the whole sample of objects. The aim of the present work was to derive chemical and physical parameters of a set of HII regions, and from them the metallicity gradient. Electron temperatures and chemical abundances were derived for the 14 HII regions where both [OII] and [OIII] emissio…
We have mapped a giant molecular cloud in the giant HII region NGC 604 in M33 in the 492 GHz ^3P_1 -- ^3P_0 transition of neutral atomic carbon using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find the distribution of the [CI] emission to be asymmetric with respect to the CO J=1--0 emission, with the peak of the [CI] emission offset towards the direction of the center of the HII region. In addition, the line ratio I_{[CI]}/I_{CO} is highest (~ 0.2) facing the HII region and lowest (< 0.1) away from it. These asymmetries indicate an edge-on morphology where the [CI] emission is strongest on the side…
We have observed extended emission physically associated with 15 out of 16 UC HII regions with large ratios of single-dish to VLA fluxes. We discuss their implications for the age problem of UC HII regions and the evolution of HII regions.
We study the stellar population of galaxies with active star formation, determining ages of the stellar components by means of spectral population synthesis of their absorption spectra. The data consist of optical spectra of 185 nearby ($z \leq 0.075$) emission line galaxies. They are mostly HII galaxies, but we also include some Starbursts and Seyfert 2s, for comparison purposes. They were grouped into 19 high signal-to-noise ratio template spectra, according to their continuum distribution, absorption and emission line characteristics. The templates were then synthesized with a star cluster …
We present radio continuum images of three Galactic HII regions, S 201, S 206, and S 209 near 232, 327, and 610 MHz using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The GMRT has a mix of short and long baselines, therefore, even though the data have high spatial resolution, the maps are still sensitive to diffuse extended emission. We find that all three HII regions have bright cores surrounded by diffuse envelopes. We use the high resolution afforded by the data to estimate the electron temperatures and emission measures of the compact cores of these HII regions. Our estimates of electron te…
We present a grid of photoionization models for the emission from photoevaporative interfaces between the ionized gas and molecular cloud in blister HII regions. For the density profiles of the emitting gas in the models, we use a general power law form calculated for photoionized, photoevaporative flows by Bertoldi (1989). We find that the spatial emission line profiles are dependent on the incident flux, the shape of the ionizing continuum and the elemental abundances. In particular, we find that the peak emissivity of the [SII] and [NII] lines are more sensitive to the elemental abundances …
We present a spectrophotometric catalogue of 90 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) discovered during an objective - prism survey that aimed to search for dwarf galaxies within the voids (Popescu et al. 1996, 1998). The paper presents line ratios, equivalent widths and absolute fluxes for the emission-lines seen in the spectra of the galaxies. A list of newly discovered Wolf-Rayet galaxies is presented. Many objects included in the catalogue have low metallicity and the extreme cases are proposed as candidates for very low metallicity galaxies.
We address the question of whether violent star formation in HII galaxies is induced by low mass companions by describing statistically their local environment as estimated by the correlation function. We argue that even if low mass companions were mainly intergalactic HI clouds, their optical counterparts should be detectable at faint limits of the Automatic Plate Measuring Machine scans. We then cross-correlate a large sample of HII galaxies with the APM faint field galaxy catalogue. The preliminary results are all consistent with HII galaxies being a randomly selected sample of normal faint…
As part of a large study to map the distribution of star formation across galactic disks, we have obtained deep Halpha images of the nearby Sculptor Group spirals NGC 247 and NGC 7793. These images are of sufficiently high quality that they allow identification and analysis of diffuse Halpha emission at surface brightness levels ranging from those of extremely low density HII regions to those of the local Galactic disk diffuse emission. This paper presents a study of the large scale distribution and global energetics of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in these galaxies and investigates the associati…
At low radio frequencies (< 100 MHz), classical HII regions may become optically thick (optical depth > 1) and can be observed as discrete absorption regions against the Galactic nonthermal background emission created by Galactic cosmic ray electrons spiraling around magnetic fields. In this work we present 74 MHz observations in the region 26>l>-15, -5<b<5, and report the detection of 92 absorption features associated with known HII regions, and derive the brightness temperature of the Galactic cosmic ray electron synchrotron emission emanating from the column behind these regions. For the 42…
Resolution of nearby giant HII regions into their stellar and nebular constituents provides fundamental insights for interpreting more distant and powerful starburst activity. The following summarizes recent advances in our understanding of the stellar populations and nebular energetics associated with giant HII regions. Photometry and spectroscopy of ionizing clusters in the Galaxy, LMC, and SMC reveal no significant relation between metallicity and the slope of the power-law initial mass function (IMF). HST/WFPC2 photometry of 3 giant HII regions in M33 also does not show any consistent tren…
We model the IR Spectral Energy Distribution of circumstellar disks embedded in a HII region and photoevaporated by the external UV radiation. The model applies to the photoevaporated disks (proplyds) in Orion Nebula. First we calculate the IR emission of a PMS star surrounded by a dusty globule that is immersed within an HII region. The globule is assumed to be spherical, homogeneous, optically thin in the IR and photoevaporated according to the Dyson (1968) model. Second, we consider the IR emission of a disk directly exposed to the nebular environment. The disk is passive and treated accord…
In a first of a series of studies of the H-alpha + [NII] emission from nearby spiral galaxies, we present measurements of H-alpha + [NII] emission from HII regions in M81. Our method uses large-field-CCD images and long-slit spectra, and is part of the ongoing Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut Sky Survey. The CCD images are taken with the NAOC 0.6/0.9m f/3 Schmidt telescope at the Xinglong Observing Station, using a multicolor filter set. Spectra of 10 of the brightest HII regions are obtained using the NAOC 2.16m telescope with a Tek 1024 X 1024 CCD. The continua of the spectra are calibrate…
We review some recent observational results on the properties of ultracompact HII regions, in particular the presence of extended continuum emission surrounding ultracompact sources and the discovery of a new class of so-called ``Hypercompact'' HII regions. In addition, we discuss recent attempts to probe the density structure within UC HII regions using the technique of spectral index analysis.
N66/NGC346 is the largest and brightest HII region in the Small Magellanic Cloud and contains at least one known supernova remnant SNR0057-7226. Optical emission from the remnant is overwhelmed by the bright photoionized emission from the nebula, but the remnant has been detected by way of far ultraviolet absorption lines. Here we present data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite showing strong OVI and CIII emission from a position at the edge of SNR0057-7226. We also present high-resolution, long-slit Halpha spectra across N66 showing high- and low-velocity emissio…
We present spectroscopic observations for six emission-line objects projected onto the Virgo cluster. These sources have been selected from narrow band (Hα+[NII]) images showing faint detectable continuum emission and EW>100 Angstrom. Five of these sources result [OIII]λ5007 emitters at z ~ 0.31, while one 122603+130724 is confirmed to be an HII region belonging to the Virgo cluster. This point-like source has a recessional velocity of ~ 200 km/s, and is associated with the giant galaxy VCC873 (NGC 4402). It has a higher luminosity, star formation rate and metallicity than the extragalactic HI…
We studied the radio properties of very young massive regions of star formation in HII galaxies, with the aim of detecting episodes of recent star formation in an early phase of evolution where the first supernovae start to appear. Our sample consists of 31 HII galaxies, characterized by strong Hydrogen emission lines, for which low resolution VLA 3.5cm and 6cm observations were obtained. The radio spectral energy distribution has a range of behaviours; 1) there are galaxies where the SED is characterized by a synchrotron-type slope, 2) galaxies with a thermal slope, and, 3) galaxies with poss…
We have characterized the physical properties (electron temperature, density, metallicity) of the ionized gas and the ionizing population (age, metallicity, presence of WR stars) in the Lynx arc at z=3.36. This is a low metallicity (~10% solar) HII galaxy which is undergoing a burst of star formation of <5 Myr age. One possible scenario that explains the emission line spectrum of the Lynx arc, the large strength of the nitrogen lines and the HeII emission is that the object has experienced a merger event that has triggered a burst of star formation. WR stars have formed that contribute to a fa…
We resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity for 266 inner Galaxy HII regions out of a sample of 291 using existing HI and 13CO sky surveys. Our sample contains all HII regions with measured radio recombination line (RRL) emission over the extent of the 13CO Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey (18 deg, < l < 55 deg. and |b| < 1) and contains ultra compact, compact, and diffuse HII regions. We use two methods for resolving the distance ambiguity for each HII region: HI emission/absorption (HIEA) and HI self-absorption (HISA). We find that the HIEA and …
We present an analysis of wind-blown, parsec-sized, mid-infrared bubbles and associated star-formation using GLIMPSE/IRAC, MIPSGAL/MIPS and MAGPIS/VLA surveys. Three bubbles from the Churchwell et al. (2006) catalog were selected. The relative distribution of the ionized gas (based on 20 cm emission), PAH emission (based on 8 um, 5.8 um and lack of 4.5 um emission) and hot dust (24 um emission) are compared. At the center of each bubble there is a region containing ionized gas and hot dust, surrounded by PAHs. We identify the likely source(s) of the stellar wind and ionizing flux producing eac…
We have analyzed new, archival and published high resolution radio and X-ray observations of a sample of composite LINER/HII galaxies known to exhibit AGN-like properties. Five of the 16 AGN candidates have milliarcsecond-scale detections and are found to display a compact, flat spectrum, high brightness temperature radio core, four of which also exhibit extended radio emission. Five of the eight AGN candidates with available high resolution X-ray observations were found to possess a hard X-ray nuclear source, two of which have no milliarcsecond radio detection. The combined high resolution ra…
We have developed a robust, automated method, hereafter designated HIIphot, which enables accurate photometric characterization of HII regions while permitting genuine adaptivity to irregular source morphology. HIIphot utilizes object-recognition techniques to make a first guess at the shapes of all sources then allows for departure from such idealized ``seeds'' through an iterative growing procedure. Photometric corrections for spatially coincident diffuse emission are derived from a low-order surface fit to the background after exclusion of all detected sources. We present results for the we…
The search for deuterium Balmer lines with VLT-UVES is reported in HII regions of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. The DI lines appear as faint, narrow emission features in the blue wings of the HI Balmer lines and can be distinguished from high-velocity HI emission. The previous identification to deuterium is re-inforced beyond doubt. The detection of D-alpha and D-beta in Orion (Hebrard et al. 2000) is confirmed and deuterium lines are now detected up to at least D-eta. The UVES observations provide the first detection of Balmer DI lines in four new HII regions (M 8, M 16, M 20, and DEM…
In this paper we use the complementary imaging capabilities of Spitzer (sensitivity) and Gemini-South/T-ReCS (spatial resolution) to study the mid-IR properties of local (d < 75Mpc) LIRGs. The T-ReCS 8-10micron imaging observations of LIRGs have allowed us to spatially resolve the nuclear emission (star formation and/or AGN) and that of HII regions in the central 3-7kpc regions of LIRGs. From the comparison of the 8micron/Pa-alpha ratios of the integrated vs. resolved HII regions of LIRGs, we infer the existence of an 8micron diffuse component, not directly related to the ionizing stars, that …
High-quality K-band spectra of strongly reddened point sources, deeply embedded in (ultra-) compact HII regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but sometimes strong Br-gamma emission. The Br-gamma equivalent widths occupy a wide range (from about 1 to over 100 A); the line widths of 100-200 km/s indicate a circumstellar rather than a nebular origin. The K-band spectra exhibit one or more features commonly associated with massive young stellar objects (YSOs) surrounded by circumstellar material: a very red colour (J-K) > 2, CO band…
We present Chandra X-ray images for the interacting galaxy pair NGC 7714/5. In addition to the unresolved starburst nucleus, a variable point source with L(X) ~ 10^40 erg/s was detected 1.5" (270 pc) northwest of the nucleus, coincident with a blue, extremely optically-luminous (M(V) ~ -14.1) point source on HST images. Eleven more candidate point-like ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are seen, two >= 10^40 erg/s. Ten of these are associated with interaction-induced features but only two with star formation. We found diffuse emission with L(X) ~ 3 X 10^40 erg/s extending 11" (1.9 kpc) to the…
We derive the molecular properties for a sample of 301 Galactic HII regions including 123 ultra compact (UC), 105 compact, and 73 diffuse nebulae. We analyze all sources within the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) of 13CO emission known to be HII regions based upon the presence of radio continuum and cm-wavelength radio recombination line emission. Unlike all previous large area coverage 13CO surveys, the GRS is fully sampled in angle and yet covers ~75 square degrees of the Inner Galaxy. The angular resolution of the GRS 46" allows us to associate molecular gas with HII regions without amb…
We present results from Monte Carlo simulations describing the radiation transfer of $Hα$ line emission, produced both by HII regions in the disk and in the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), through the dust layer of the galaxy NGC891. This allows us to calculate the amount of light originating in the HII regions of the disk and scattered by dust at high $z$, and compare it with the emission produced by recombinations in the DIG. The cuts of photometric and polarimetric maps along the $z$-axis show that scattered light from HII regions is still 10\% of that of the DIG at $z\sim 600$~pc, whereas the t…
Combining the relative vicinity of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 with the Spitzer images, we investigate the properties of infrared (IR) emission sites and assess the reliability of the IR emission as a star formation tracer. The mid- and far-IR emission of M33 was obtained from IRAC and MIPS images from the Spitzer archive. We compared the photometric results for several samples of three known types of discrete sources (HII regions, supernovae remnants and planetary nebulae) with theoretical diagnostic diagrams, and derived the spectral energy distribution (from 3.6 to 24 micron) of each …
The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays over the coming decade is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21cm emission between a large HII region and the surrounding neutral IGM will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. We find that an instrument like the planned Mileura Widefield Array Low-Frequency Demonstrator (LFD) will be able to obtain good signal to noise on HII regions around the most luminous quasars, and determine some gross geometric properties, e.g. whether the HII region is spherical or coni…
We present the first results of a study of the kinematics and morphology of ultracompact HII regions using a new observational technique. We used very high spatial (1.5") and spectral (3.4 km/s)resolution observations of the [NeII] line at 12.8 microns to study the ionized gas in Monoceros R2. The [NeII] emission shows an HII region with highest emission measure in a ~24" shell. Line widths are as narrow as 8 km/s at some positions. In places where the lines are complex and broader, the additional width is most likely due to overlap of narrower features along the line of sight. The global kine…
The ionising stellar populations of eleven HII regions in the spiral galaxies: NGC628, NGC925, NGC1232 and NGC1637, all of them reported to have solar or oversolar abundances according to empirical calibrations, have been analysed using stellar population synthesis models. Four of the observed regions in the sample, show features which indicate the presence of a population of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars with ages between 2.3 and 4.1 Myr. This population is sufficient to explain the emission line spectrum of the low metallicity region H13 in NGC628. This is not the case for the rest of the regions fo…
We present the results of an ongoing investigation to provide a detailed view of the processes by which massive stars shape the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM), from pc to kpc scales. In this paper we have focused on studying the environments of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in M31 to find evidence for WR wind-ISM interactions, through imaging ionized hydrogen nebulae surrounding these stars. We have conducted a systematic survey for HII shells surrounding 48 of the 49 known WR stars in M31. There are 17 WR stars surrounded by single shells, or shell fragments, 7 stars surrounded by concentric l…
