We present chemical abundances for O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti and Fe in eight red giants and one turnoff star in the metal rich globular cluster 47 Tuc, based on spectroscopy with the MIKE high resolution spectrograph on the Magellan 6.5-m Clay telescope. A robust line by line differential abundance analysis technique, relative to the K-giant Arcturus, was used to reduce systematic errors from atmospheric and atomic parameters. Our derived mean LTE [Fe/H] of -0.76 +- 0.01 +- 0.04 dex (random and systematic error, respectively) is more metal poor by about 0.1 dex than recent literature results. The chemical element ratios in this nearby globular cluster most closely resemble those of the Galactic bulge, although there is a non-negligible overlap with the composition of thick-disk stars. We find that the [Al/Fe] and [Na/Fe] ratios coincide with the upper boundary of the trends seen in the bulge and thick disk. There is only a small intrinsic scatter in the majority of the abundance ratios, indicating that 47 Tuc is mostly a rather chemically homogeneous system.
We present ATCA radio images of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae made at 1.4 and 1.7 GHz and provide an analysis of the radio sources detected within 5 arcmin of the cluster centre. 11 sources are detected, most of which are clustered about the core of 47 Tuc. Both of the pulsars in 47 Tuc whose positions are known can be identified with sources in the 1.4 GHz image. The source distribution has a characteristic radius of ~100 arcsec, larger than the 23 arcsec radius of the cluster core. We compare source positions with the positions of nine X-ray sources and find no correspondence.
We analyze ROSAT HRI observations obtained from 1992 to 1996 of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Identifications of two X-ray sources with HD 2072 and with a galaxy, respectively, are used to obtain accurate (<2'') positions of the X-ray sources in the cluster. We find possible optical counterparts, including the blue objects V1 and V2, for three X-ray sources in the core of 47 Tuc, but note that the probability of chance positional coincidence is significant. One of the five sources previously reported by us to reside in the cluster core is found to be an artefact of misalignment between subseque…
Twenty millisecond radio pulsars have now been observed in the globular cluster 47 Tuc. This is by far the largest sample of radio pulsars known in any globular cluster. These recent observations provide a unique opportunity to re-examine theoretically the formation and evolution of recycled pulsars in globular clusters.
We present 8-13 micron spectra of eight red giants in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), obtained at the European Southern Observatory 3.6m telescope. These are the first mid-infrared spectra of metal-poor, low-mass stars. The spectrum of at least one of these, namely the extremely red, large-amplitude variable V1, shows direct evidence of circumstellar grains made of amorphous silicate.
We report the detection of ionized intracluster gas in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Pulsars in this cluster with a negative period derivative, which must lie in the distant half of the cluster, have significantly higher measured integrated electron column densities than the pulsars with a positive period derivative. We derive the plasma density within the central few pc of the cluster using two different methods which yield consistent values. Our best estimate of n_e = (0.067+-0.015)/cm^3 is about 100 times the free electron density of the ISM in the vicinity of 47 Tucanae, and the ionized…
Chandra observations of globular clusters provide insight into the formation, evolution, and X-ray emission mechanisms of X-ray binary populations. Our recent (2002) deep observations of 47 Tuc allow detailed study of its populations of quiescent LMXBs, CVs, MSPs, and active binaries (ABs). First results include the confirmation of a magnetic CV in a globular cluster, the identification of 31 additional chromospherically active binaries, and the identification of three additional likely quiescent LMXBs containing neutron stars. Comparison of the X-ray properties of the known MSPs in 47 Tuc wit…
We have performed a large ground-based search for transiting Hot Jupiter planets in the outer regions of the globular clusters 47 Tucanae and omega Centauri. The aim was to help understand the role that environmental effects play on Hot Jupiter formation and survivability in globular clusters. Using the ANU 1m telescope and a 52' X 52' field, a total of 54,000 solar-type stars were searched for transits in both clusters with fully tested transit-finding algorithms. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations were performed to model the datasets and calculate the expected planet yields. Seven planets were…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary OGLEGC-228 (V228) to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, proper motion and distance, the system is a blue straggler member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our analysis shows that V228 is a semi-detached Algol. We obtain M=1.512 +/- 0.022 Msun, R=1.357 +/- 0.019 Rsun, L=7.02 +/- 0.050 Lsun for the hotter and more luminous primary component and M=0.200 +/- 0.007 Msun, R=1.238 +/- 0.013 Rsun, L=1.57 +/- 0.09 Lsun for the Roche lobe filling secondary.
Atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity) and radial velocities are derived for 12 candidate blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, which so far have been known to contain primarily red HB stars. The spectroscopic targets were selected from the catalog of hot stars detected in these clusters at 1600 A using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Spectroscopic analyses of these stars reveal, however, that one of the four HB candidate targets in 47 Tuc, and five out of the eight targets in NGC 362 are probably background stars belon…
We present near infrared velocity curves for 12 long period variables (LPVs) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc (NGC 104). New light curves are also presented for these variables. Results are compared with the period-luminosity sequences occupied by the LPVs in the LMC. Sequence C variables (fundamental mode pulsators) have larger velocity amplitudes than sequence B variables (first overtone pulsators). We show that, at similar luminosities, higher mass loss rates are associated with larger pulsation amplitudes. One variable (V18) does not fit the normal period luminosity sequences and it has an u…
We have used high resolution WFPC2-HST and wide field ground-based observations to construct a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSS) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc spanning the entire radial extent of the cluster. The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, rapidly decreases at intermediate radii, and finally rises again at larger radii. The observed distribution closely resembles that discovered in M3 by Ferraro et al (1993,1997). To date, complete BSS surveys covering the full radial extent (HST in the center and wide field CCD ground based observations of the exterior) have…
We present a new determination of the distance (and age) of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) based on the fit of its white dwarf (WD) cooling sequence with the empirical fiducial sequence of local WD with known trigonometric parallax, following the method described in Renzini et al. (1996). Both the cluster and the local WDs were imaged with HST+WFPC2 using the same instrument setup. We obtained an apparent distance modulus of $(m-M)_V=13.27\pm0.14$ consistent with previous ground-based determinations and shorter than that found using HIPPARCOS subdwarfs. Coupling our distanc…
Five fields located close to the center of the globular cluster NGC 104=47 Tuc were surveyed in a search for variable stars. We present V-band light curves for 42 variables. This sample includes 13 RR Lyr stars -- 12 of them belong to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and 1 is a background object from the galactic halo. Twelve eclipsing binaries were identified -- 9 contact systems and 3 detached/semi-detached systems. Seven eclipsing binaries are located in the blue straggler region on the cluster color-magnitude diagram (CMD) and four binaries can be considered main-sequence systems. One bina…
Using extensive HST imaging, combined with Chandra X-ray and Parkes radio data, we have detected the optical binary companion to a second millisecond pulsar (MSP) in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. This faint (V=22.3) blue (V-I=0.7) star shows a large amplitude (60-70%) sinusoidal variation in both V and I. The period (3.19066 hr) and phase of the variation match those of the MSP 47 Tuc W (which does not have an accurate radio timing position) to within 0.5 seconds and 1.2 minutes respectively, well within the ~1sigma errors. The phase dependence of the intensity and color implies that heatin…
Positions of stars of 47 Tuc have been derived by the use of photographic plates and CCD frames (ESO La Silla) and data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The positions have been determined with respect to the PPM, which is based on the FK5 system. We have compared the positions of variable and blue stars in the core of 47 Tuc with those of the X-ray sources found by Hasinger et al. (1994). Taking into account a possible constant shift of the X-ray positions of up to 10", there are three different solutions which would give identifications of four of the central X-ray sources with blue str…
We use radial velocities of member stars and cluster surface brightness profiles to non-parametrically determine the mass density profiles and isotropic phase-space distribution functions $f(E)$ for the globular clusters M15 (NGC7078), 47~Tuc (NGC104), NGC~362, and NGC~3201. Assuming isotropy and using the velocity dispersion and surface brightness profiles, the Jeans equation uniquely determines the mass density profile. In the two centrally-concentrated clusters, M15 and 47~Tuc, we find that the mass-to-light ratios (M/L's) reach minima around 1\arcmin, and increase by more than a factor of …
We present spectral and long-timescale variability analyses of \textit{Chandra} ACIS-S observations of the 19 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with precisely known positions in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The X-ray emission of the majority of these MSPs is well described by a thermal (blackbody or neutron star hydrogen atmosphere) spectrum with a temperature $T_{\rm eff}\sim(1-3)\times10^6$ K, emission radius $R_{\rm eff}\sim0.1-3$ km, and luminosity $L_{X}\sim10^{30-31}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. For several MSPs, there is indication that a second thermal component is required, similar to what is seen in…
We present preliminary results from a FUV spectroscopic and photometric survey of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our main goal is to either confirm or rule out the existence of a large population of CVs in the core of this cluster. We have so far identified approximately 425 FUV sources, most of which are probably hot, young WDs. However, we have also found approximately 30 FUV sources whose position in a FUV-optical color-magnitude diagram makes them strong CV candidates. If most or all of these objects are eventually confirmed as CVs, the large CV population predicted by tidal capture theory h…
The paper investigates the properties of the dust mass loss in stars populating the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc, by combining ISOCAM and DENIS data. Raster maps of 5 fields covering areas ranging from 4 x 4 to 15 x 15 arcmin2 at different distances from the center of the cluster have been obtained with ISOCAM at 11.5 mum (LW10 filter). The covered fields include most of the red variables known in this cluster. A detection threshold of about 0.2 mJy is achieved, allowing to detect giant stars at 11.5 mum all the way down to the horizontal branch. No dust-enshrouded asymptotic gi…
We have used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope to obtain deep far-UV (1620 Angstrom), 40' diameter images of the prototypical metal-rich globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We find a population of about 20 hot (Teff > 9000 K) objects near or above the predicted UV luminosity of the hot horizontal branch (HB) and lying within two half-light radii of the cluster center. We believe these are normal hot HB or post-HB objects rather than interacting binaries or blue stragglers. IUE spectra of two are consistent with post-HB phases. These observations, and recent HST photometry of two other metal-rich clus…
We report the largest number of optical identifications of X-ray sources yet obtained in a single globular cluster. Using deep Chandra/ACIS-I imaging and extensive HST studies with WFPC2, we have detected optical counterparts to at least 22 cataclysmic variables (CVs) and 29 chromospherically active binaries (BY Dras and RS CVns) in 47 Tuc. These identifications are all based on tight astrometric matches between X-ray sources and objects with unusual (non main sequence) optical colors and/or optical variability. In the U vs U-V color magnitude diagram (CMD), the CVs all show evidence for blue …
We have detected 300 X-ray sources within the half-mass radius (2.79') of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae in a deep (281 ks) Chandra exposure. We perform photometry and simple spectral fitting for our detected sources, and construct luminosity functions, X-ray color-magnitude and color-color diagrams. Eighty-seven X-ray sources show variability on timescales from hours to years. Thirty-one of the new X-ray sources are identified with chromospherically active binaries from the catalogs of Albrow et al. The radial distributions of detected sources imply roughly 70 are background sources of some …
We use two stellar populations in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae to trace its dynamical history: blue stragglers and low mass main sequence stars. We assumed that the blue stragglers were formed through stellar collisions in all regions of the cluster. We find that in the core of the cluster, models of collisional blue stragglers agree well with the observations as long as blue stragglers are still continuing to form and the mass function in the cluster is extremely biased towards massive stars (x=-8 where a Salpeter mass function has x=+1.35). We show that such an extreme mass function is su…
A recent study by Wylie et al 2006 has revealed that s-process element abundances are enhanced relative to iron in both red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars of 47 Tucanae. A more detailed investigation into s-process element abundances throughout the colour-magnitude diagram of 47 Tucanae is vital in order to determine whether the observed enhancements are intrinsic to the cluster. This paper explores this possibility through observational and theoretical means. The visibility of s- and r-process element lines in synthetic spectra of giant and dwarf stars throughout the colour ma…
We have used HST imaging of the central regions (R<100 arcsec, about 5 core radii) of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae to derive proper motions and U- and V-band magnitudes for 14,366 cluster members. We also present a catalogue of astrometry and F475W photometry for nearly 130,000 stars in a rather larger central area. These data are made available in their entirety, in the form of downloadable electronic tables. We use them first to obtain a new estimate for the position of the cluster center and to define the stellar density profile into essentially zero radius. We then search in particular …
Abundances of C and N are derived from features due to the CH G-band and to the UV CN band measured on high resolution (R ~ 40,000) UVES spectra of more than 40 dwarfs and subgiants in NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc. Oxygen abundances (or upper limits) are available for all stars in the sample. Isotopic ratios 12C/13C were derived from the CH molecular band. This is the first determination of this ratio in unevolved dwarf stars in globular clusters. By enlarging the sample of subgiants in NGC 6397 studied in Gratton et al. (2001), we uncovered, for the first time, large variations in both Na an…
Current X-ray missions are providing high-quality X-ray spectra from neutron stars (NSs) in quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries (qLMXBs). This has motivated us to calculate new hydrogen-atmosphere models, including opacity due to free-free absorption and Thomson scattering, thermal electron conduction, and self-irradiation by photons from the compact object. We have constructed a self-consistent grid of neutron star models covering a wide range of surface gravities as well as effective temperatures, which we make available to the scientific community. We present multi-epoch Chandra X-ray observa…
We describe the detailed chemical abundance analysis of a high-resolution (R~35,000), integrated-light (IL), spectrum of the core of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc, obtained using the du Pont echelle at Las Campanas. We develop an abundance analysis strategy that can be applied to spatial unresolved extra- galactic clusters. We have computed abundances for Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Nd and Eu. For an analysis with the known color-magnitude diagram (cmd) for 47 Tuc we obtain a mean [Fe/H] value of -0.75 +/-0.026+/-0.045 dex (random and systematic…
We used the UVES spectrograph on Kueyen (VLT UT2) to perform the abundance analysis of stars at the base of the giant branch (RGB) and at the main sequence turn-off in the globular cluster 47 Tuc (NGC 104). High dispersion spectra (R ~ 40,000) for 3 dwarfs and 9 subgiants were analyzed. We found an overall [Fe/H] value of -0.67 +/-0.01 +/-0.04, rms=0.05 dex. The mean value obtained from stars at the base of the RGB is virtually the same as that obtained from the dwarfs. Na and O abundances show a star-to-star scatter and are anti-correlated, not unlike previous finding in more metal-poor clust…
We report time series and variability information for the optical identifications of X-ray sources in 47 Tuc reported in Paper I. The eight CVs with secure orbital periods have fainter accretion disks, in the V band, than field CVs with similar periods. These faint disks and the faint absolute magnitudes (Mv) of the 47 Tuc CVs suggests they have low accretion rates. The median Fx/Fopt value for the 47 Tuc CVs is higher than that of all known classes of field CV, because of both the faint Mv values and the relatively high X-ray luminosities (Lx). The latter are only seen in DQ Her systems in th…
Using King-Mitchie Models, we compute encounter rates between the various stellar species in the globular clusters $ω$ Cen, and 47 Tuc. We also compute event rates for encounters between single stars and a population of primordial binaries. Using these rates, and what we have learnt from hydrodynamical simulations of encounters performed earlier, we compute the production rates of objects such as low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), smothered neutron stars and blue stragglers (massive main-sequence stars). If 10\% of the stars are contained in primordial binaries, the production rate of interestin…
We report the discovery of peculiar X-ray spectral variability in the binary radio millisecond pulsar PSR J0024--7204W in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The observed emission consists of a dominant non-thermal component, which is eclipsed for a portion of the orbit, and a thermal component, which appears to be persistent. We propose that the non-thermal X-rays originate in a relativistic intrabinary shock, formed due to interaction between the relativistic particle wind from the pulsar and matter from the main-sequence companion star, while the thermal photons are from the heated magnetic po…
We present $BVI$ photometry for about 16000 stars from a 220 arcmin$^{2}$ field centered 8 arcmin east of the center of 47 Tuc. We have identified eight likely blue stragglers located in the outer parts of the cluster. Four of these objects are easy targets for spectroscopic studies with ground-based telescopes. Six candidates for blue horizontal branch stars were identified. However, it is possible that all or most of them belong in fact to the SMC halo. One faint blue star being candidate for a cataclysmic variable was found close to the cluster center. The average $I$-band magnitude for sta…
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging observations of two Galactic globular clusters, 47 Tuc and M15, using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) longpass (LP) filter and the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) F606W and F814W filters. These globular clusters have very different metallicities ([Fe/H] = -0.7 dex for 47 Tuc, and [Fe/H] = -2.2 dex for M15), essentially spanning the metallicity distribution of the entire Milky Way globular cluster system, and were chosen to investigate the relationship between magnitudes in the non-standard STIS LP system and the b…
We report on a deep spectroscopic survey for star-to-star CN variations along the main sequence (MS) of the globular cluster 47 Tuc with ESO's VLT. We find a significant bimodal distribution in the S(3839) index for main-sequence stars in the mass range of ~0.85 to 0.65 M_sun, or from the main-sequence turn-off down to ~2.5 mag below the main sequence turn-off. An anti-correlation of CN and CH is evident on the MS. The result is discussed in the context of the ability of faint MS stars to alter their surface composition through internal evolutionary effects. We argue against internal stellar e…
We present a new dynamical scenario for the formation of short-period binary millisecond pulsars in globular clusters. Our work is motivated by the recent observations of 20 radio pulsars in 47 Tuc. In a dense cluster such as 47 Tuc, most neutron stars acquire binary companions through exchange interactions with primordial binaries. The resulting systems have semimajor axes in the range \~0.1-1 AU and neutron star companion masses ~1-3 Msun. For many of these systems we find that, when the companion evolves off the main sequence and fills its Roche lobe, the subsequent mass transfer is dynamic…
Using results from radio and X-ray observations of millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae, and extensive HST U, V, I imaging of the globular cluster core, we have derived a common astrometric solution good to < 0.1". A close positional coincidence is found for 47 Tuc U, a 4.3 ms pulsar in a 0.429 day orbit, detected in radio and X-rays, with an m_V = 20.9 blue star. Analysis of extensive time series data for this optical candidate shows a 0.004 magnitude semi-amplitude variation at the period and phase expected from the radio ephemeris, and the optical variations are spatially coincident with the c…
This research forms part of an investigation into heavy element abundances in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in various stellar environments. Seven giant stars in the southern globular cluster 47 Tuc have been observed using the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Abundances for five s- and r- process elements have been determined: the light s-process elements, Y and Zr; the heavy s-process elements, La and Nd; and the r-process element Eu. Mean enhancements in the light s-process, [ls/Fe], of ~+0.6 dex and heavy s-process elements, [hs/Fe], of ~+0.3 dex were determined for all the giant stars. T…
We summarize the x-ray properties of the complete samples of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) detected in our Chandra observations of the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 6397. The 47 Tuc MSPs are predominantly soft sources suggestive of thermal emission from the neutron star polar cap and have x-ray luminosities in a surprisingly narrow range (Lx ~--4 x 10^{30} erg/s). The single MSP in NGC 6397 is both hard and apparently extended, probably due to shocked hot gas evaporating from its main sequence companion. In contrast to MSPs in the field and the cluster M28, which show correlation between x-ray…
We present $V$ and $I$ CCD photometry for $\sim360$ stars in the recently discovered dwarf galaxy Tucana. The large field investigated and the accurate photometric calibration make our data complementary to the deeper HST photometry. From the $I$ magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch we estimate a distance modulus $(m-M)_0=24.69\pm0.16$, corresponding to $870\pm60$ Kpc, confirming that Tucana is an isolated dwarf spheroidal located almost at the border of the Local Group. From the color of the red giant branch tip and by direct comparison with the giant branches of galactic globular clu…
Using the AAOmega instrument of the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have obtained medium-resolution near-infrared spectra of 10,500 stars in two-degree fields centered on the galactic globular clusters 47 Tuc, NGC 288, M12, M30 and M55. Radial velocities and equivalent widths of the infrared Ca II triplet lines have been determined to constrain cluster membership, which in turn has been used to study the angular extent of the clusters. From the analysis of 140-1000 member stars in each cluster, we do not find extended structures that go beyond the tidal radii. For three cluster we estimate a 1%…
aims: Our aim is to determine Li abundances in TO stars of the Globular Cluster 47 Tuc and test theories about Li variations among TO stars. method: We make use of high resolution (R~ 43000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N=50--70) spectra of 4 turn off (TO) stars obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the 8.2m VLT Kueyen telescope. results: The four stars observed, span the range 1.6<~A(Li)} <~ 2.14, providing a mean A(Li) = 1.84 with a standard deviation of 0.25 dex. When coupled with data of other two TO stars of the cluster, available in the literature, the full range in Li abundances obse…
Recent observations of the globular cluster 47 Tuc, made with the Parkes telescope at a wavelength of 20 cm, have resulted in the discovery of nine new millisecond pulsars, all in binary systems. The number of timing solutions available has risen from two to 14. These results will make possible a more detailed study of the cluster dynamics.
We study the evolution of binary stars in globular clusters using a novel approach combining a state-of-the-art population synthesis code with a simple treatment of dynamical interactions in the dense cluster core. We find that the combination of stellar evolution and dynamical interactions (binary-single and binary-binary) leads to a rapid depletion of the binary population in the cluster core. The maximum binary fraction today in the core of a typical dense cluster like 47 Tuc, assuming an initial binary fraction of 100%, is only about 5%. We show that this is in good agreement with recent H…
We consider the survivability of planetary systems in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We compute the cross sections for the breakup of planetary systems via encounters with single stars and binaries. We also compute the cross sections to leave planets on eccentric orbits. We find that wider planetary systems (d > 0.3 AU) are likely to be broken up in the central regions of 47 Tucanae (within the half-mass radius of the cluster). However tighter systems, and those in less-dense regions may survive. Tight systems will certainly survive in less-dense clusters where subsequent surveys should be c…
It is expected that specific globular clusters can contain up to a hundred of millisecond pulsars. These pulsars can accelerate leptons at the shock waves originated in collisions of the pulsar winds and/or inside the pulsar magnetospheres. Energetic leptons diffuse gradually through the globular cluster comptonizing stellar and microwave background radiation. We calculate the GeV-TeV $γ$-ray spectra for different models of injection of leptons and parameters of the globular clusters assuming reasonable, of the order of 1%, efficiency of energy conversion from the pulsar winds into the relativ…
We have used a set of archived Hubble Space Telescope/ACS images to probe the evolved populations of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We find an excess of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the cluster core. We interpret this feature as the signature of an extra-population likely made by the progeny of massive stars originated by the evolution of binary systems. Indeed the comparison with theoretical tracks suggests that the AGB population of 47 Tuc can be significantly contaminated by more massive stars currently experiencing the first ascending Red Giant Branch.
We are examining mass loss from globular clusters giant stars, focussing on metallicity dependance. We present three sets of observations: TIMMI-2 mid-IR spectra of 47 Tuc, UVES high-resolution optical spectra of several clusters, and an infrared atlas of omega Cen using the Spitzer Space Telescope.
X-ray bursts from bright sources in globular clusters of our galaxy show that at least 11 (of a total 13) of these sources are neutron stars. One of the low-luminosity X-ray sources in omega Cen is a neutron star accreting at a low rate. Together with the discoveries that M~15 contains two bright X-ray sources, and that 47 Tuc and NGC 6440 contain 2 and 5 low-luminosity X-ray sources with a neutron star, this indicates that the total number of binaries with neutron stars in globular clusters is higher than previously suspected. The discovery of very bright X-ray sources in globular clusters ne…
We report the results of an analysis of CN and CH band strengths among a large sample of 47 Tucanae main-sequence and turn-off stars presented earlier by Harbeck et al. The resulting C and N abundances derived from synthetic spectra demonstrate: 1) A strongly anti-correlated relationship between [C/Fe] and [N/Fe] with the CN-strong stars exhibiting depleted carbon and enhanced nitrogen. 2) The abundances of both elements agree remarkably well with those found among the evolved red giants of the cluster implying little change in surface abundances from at least Mv ~ +6.5 to the tip of the red g…
We study the evolution of binary stars in globular clusters using a new Monte Carlo approach combining a population synthesis code (StarTrack), and a simple treatment of dynamical interactions in the dense cluster core using a new tool for computing 3-body and 4-body interactions (Fewbody). We find that the combination of stellar evolution and dynamical interactions (binary-single and binary-binary) leads to a rapid depletion of the binary population in the cluster core. The maximum binary fraction today in the core of a typical dense cluster like 47 Tuc, assuming an initial binary fraction of…
The age of globular clusters inferred from observations depends sensitively on assumptions such as the initial helium abundance and the mass loss rate. A high helium abundance (e.g., $Y\approx$0.28), as well as an inclusion of helium diffusion and oxygen-enhancement in stellar models, can lower the current age estimate for metal-poor globular clusters from 14$\pm 1.5$ Gyr to about 11$\pm 1$ Gyr, significantly relaxing the constraints on the Hubble constant, allowing values as high as 60km/sec/Mpc for a universe with the critical density and 90km/sec/Mpc for a baryon-only universe. The uncertai…
We present the first results of a large ACS Survey of Galactic globular clusters. This Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury project is designed to obtain photometry with S/N > ~10 for main sequence stars with masses > ~0.2Msun in a sample of globulars using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel. Here we focus on clusters without previous HST imaging data. These include NGC 5466, 6779, 5053, 6144, Palomar 2, E 3, Lynga 7, Palomar 1, and NGC 6366. Our CMDs extend reliably from the horizontal branch to as much as seven magnitudes fainter than the main sequence turnoff and repr…
Distances and absolute ages for the globular clusters NGC6397, NGC6752, and 47 Tuc are obtained using Main Sequence Fitting. Accurate reddenings and metal abundances (errors of 0.005 mag and 0.04 dex) are obtained by comparing B-V, b-y colours and UVES spectra for clusters TO-stars and subgiants with similar data for Hipparcos subdwarfs, using a reddening free temperature indicator (Halpha). Errors in distances and ages are 0.07 mag and 1 Gyr. NGC6397 and NGC6752 have ages of 13.5\pm 1.1 and 13.4\pm 1.1 Gyr, while 47 Tuc is probably about 2.6 Gyr younger, in agreement with results obtained by …
We have monitored a sample of 27 nearby globular clusters in the hard X-ray band (20-120 keV) for approximately 1400 days using the BATSE instrument on board the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. Globular clusters may contain a large number of compact objects (e.g., pulsars or X-ray binaries containing neutron stars) which can produce hard X-ray emission. Our search provides a sensitive (~50 mCrab) monitor for hard X-ray transient events on time scales of >1 day and a means for observing persistent hard X-ray emission. We have discovered no transient events from any of the clusters and no persist…
We show that enhanced extra mixing in low-mass red giants can result in a fluorine abundance that is correlated with abundance variations of other elements participating in H burning, such as C, N, O and Na. This finding is used to explain the fluorine abundance variations recently found in bright red giants of the globular cluster M4.
HST (V,I) photometry has been obtained for the inner halo globular cluster NGC 6652. The photometry reaches approximately 4 mag below the turn-off and includes a well populated horizontal branch. This cluster is located close to the Galactic center at a galactocentric distance of approximately 2.0 kpc with a reddening of E(V-I) = 0.15 +/- 0.02 and has a metallicity of [Fe/H] approximately -0.85. Based upon Delta(V) between the point on the sub-giant branch which is 0.05 mag redder than the turn-off and the horizontal branch, NGC 6652 is 11.7 +/- 1.6 Gyr old. Using this same Delta(V), precise d…
We present N abundances for 21 bright giants in the globular cluster NGC 6752 based on high-resolution UVES spectra of the 3360A NH lines. We confirm that the Stromgren c1 index traces the N abundance and find that the star-to-star N abundance variation is 1.95 dex, at the sample's luminosity. We find statistically significant correlations, but small amplitude variations, between the abundances of N and alpha-, Fe-peak, and s-process elements. Analyses using model atmospheres with appropriate N, O, Na, and Al abundances would strengthen, rather than mute, these correlations. If the small varia…
We present abundances of C, N, O, F, Na, and Fe in six giant stars of the tidally disrupted globular cluster NGC 6712. The abundances were derived by comparing synthetic spectra with high resolution infrared spectra obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope. We find large star-to-star abundance variations of the elements C, N, O, F, and Na. NGC 6712 and M4 are the only globular clusters in which F has been measured in more than two stars, and both clusters reveal F abundance variations whose amplitude is comparable to, or exceeds, that of O, a pattern which may be pr…
It is currently impossible to determine the abundances and ages of the stellar populations of distant, dense stellar systems star by star. Therefore, methods to analyze the composite light of stellar systems are required. I review the modelling and analysis of integrated spectra of the stellar populations of individual globular clusters, globular cluster systems, early-type galaxies, and the bulges of spiral galaxies, with a focus on their abundances and abundance ratios. I conclude with a list of continuing difficulties in the modelling that complicate the interpretation of integrated spectra…
