Hierarchical cooperation has recently been shown to achieve better throughput scaling than classical multihop schemes under certain assumptions on the channel model in static wireless networks. However, the end-to-end delay of this scheme turns out to be significantly larger than those of multihop schemes. A modification of the scheme is proposed here that achieves a throughput-delay trade-off $D(n)=(\log n)^2 T(n)$ for T(n) between $Θ(\sqrt{n}/\log n)$ and $Θ(n/\log n)$, where D(n) and T(n) are respectively the average delay per bit and the aggregate throughput in a network of n nodes. This trade-off complements the previous results of El Gamal et al., which show that the throughput-delay trade-off for multihop schemes is given by D(n)=T(n) where T(n) lies between $Θ(1)$ and $Θ(\sqrt{n})$.
Meanwhile, the present paper considers the network multiple-access problem, which may be of interest in its own right.
In wireless local area networks, spatially varying channel conditions result in a severe performance discrepancy between different nodes in the uplink, depending on their position. Both throughput and energy expense are affected. Cooperative protocols were proposed to mitigate these discrepancies. However, additional network state information (NSI) from other nodes is needed to enable cooperation. The aim of this work is to assess how NSI and the degree of cooperation affect throughput and energy expenses. To this end, a CSMA protocol called fairMAC is defined, which allows to adjust the amoun…
In this paper, we propose a new rateless coded cooperation scheme for a general multi-user cooperative wireless system. We develop cooperation methods based on Raptor codes with the assumption that the channels face erasure with specific erasure probabilities and transmitters have no channel state information. A fully coded cooperation (FCC) and a partially coded cooperation (PCC) strategy are developed to maximize the average system throughput. Both PCC and FCC schemes have been analyzed through AND-OR tree analysis and a linear programming optimization problem is then formulated to find the …
In this work, we study the benefit of partial relay cooperation. We consider a two-node system consisting of one source and one relay node transmitting information to a common destination. The source and the relay have external traffic and in addition, the relay is equipped with a flow controller to regulate the incoming traffic from the source node. The cooperation is performed at the network level. A collision channel with erasures is considered. We provide an exact characterization of the stability region of the system and we also prove that the system with partial cooperation is always bet…
This paper studies a novel user cooperation method in a wireless powered communication network (WPCN), where a pair of distributed terminal users first harvest wireless energy broadcasted by one energy node (EN) and then use the harvested energy to transmit information cooperatively to a destination node (DN). In particular, the two cooperating users exchange their independent information with each other to form a virtual antenna array and transmit jointly to the DN. By allowing each user to allocate part of its harvested energy to transmit the other's information, the proposed cooperation can…
n source and destination pairs randomly located in an area want to communicate with each other. Signals transmitted from one user to another at distance r apart are subject to a power loss of r^{-alpha}, as well as a random phase. We identify the scaling laws of the information theoretic capacity of the network. In the case of dense networks, where the area is fixed and the density of nodes increasing, we show that the total capacity of the network scales linearly with n. This improves on the best known achievability result of n^{2/3} of Aeron and Saligrama, 2006. In the case of extended netwo…

In particular, the two cooperating users exchange their independent information with each other so as to form a virtual antenna array and transmit jointly to the DN. By allowing the users to share their harvested energy to transmit each other's information, the proposed method can effect…
Massive multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) systems, dense small-cells (SCs), and full duplex are three candidate techniques for next-generation communication systems. The cooperation of next-generation techniques could offer more benefits, e.g., SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems. In this paper, three strategies of SC in-band wireless backhaul in massive MIMO systems are introduced and compared, i.e., complete time-division duplex (CTDD), zero-division duplex (ZDD), and ZDD with interference rejection (ZDD-IR). Simulation results demonstrate that SC in-band wireless backhau…
This paper considers multiterminal networks with energy harvesting transmitter nodes that are also capable of wirelessly transferring energy to or receiving energy from other nodes in the network. In particular, the jointly optimal transmit power and energy transfer policies that maximize sum-throughput for the two-way, two-hop, and multiple access channels are identified. It is shown for nodes with infinite-sized batteries that delaying energy transfers until energy is needed immediately at the receiving node is sum-throughput optimal. Focusing on such procrastinating policies without loss of…
This paper studies user cooperation in the emerging wireless powered communication network (WPCN) for throughput optimization. For the purpose of exposition, we consider a two-user WPCN, in which one hybrid access point (H-AP) broadcasts wireless energy to two distributed users in the downlink (DL) and the users transmit their independent information using their individually harvested energy to the H-AP in the uplink (UL) through time-division-multiple-access (TDMA). We propose user cooperation in the WPCN where the user which is nearer to the H-AP and has a better channel for DL energy harves…
Delay-reliability (D-R), and throughput-delay-reliability (T-D-R) tradeoffs in an ad hoc network are derived for single hop and multi-hop transmission with automatic repeat request (ARQ) on each hop. The delay constraint is modeled by assuming that each packet is allowed at most $D$ retransmissions end-to-end, and the reliability is defined as the probability that the packet is successfully decoded in at most $D$ retransmissions. The throughput of the ad hoc network is characterized by the transmission capacity, which is defined to be the maximum allowable density of transmitting nodes satisfy…
We study the interference and outage statistics in a slotted Aloha ad hoc network, where the spatial distribution of nodes is non-stationary and isotropic. In such a network, outage probability and local throughput depend on both the particular location in the network and the shape of the spatial distribution. We derive in closed-form certain distributional properties of the interference that are important for analyzing wireless networks as a function of the location and the spatial shape. Our results focus on path loss exponents 2 and 4, the former case not being analyzable before due to the …
In this paper, we investigate the performance of incremental redundancy combining as a new cooperative relaying protocol for large M2M networks with opportunistic relaying. The nodes in the large M2M network are modeled by a Poisson Point Process, experience Rayleigh fading and utilize slotted ALOHA as the MAC protocol. The progress rate density (PRD) of the M2M network is used to quantify the performance of proposed relaying protocol and compare it to conventional multihop relaying with no cooperation. It is shown that incremental redundancy combining in a large M2M network provides substanti…
In this paper, we study and optimize the cooperation cluster size in cooperative spectrum sensing to maximize the throughput of secondary users (SUs). To calculate the effective throughput, we assume each SU spends just 1 symbol to negotiate with the other SUs in its transmission range. This is the minimum overhead required for each SU to broadcast its sensing decision to the other members of the cluster. When the number of SUs is large, the throughput spent for the negotiation is noticeable and therefore increasing the cooperation cluster size does not improve the effective throughput anymore…
In this paper, we propose a distributed throughput-optimal ad hoc wireless network scheduling algorithm, which is motivated by the celebrated simplex algorithm for solving linear programming (LP) problems. The scheduler stores a sparse set of basic schedules, and chooses the max-weight basic schedule for transmission in each time slot. At the same time, the scheduler tries to update the set of basic schedules by searching for a new basic schedule in a throughput increasing direction. We show that both of the above procedures can be achieved in a distributed manner. Specifically, we propose an …
We consider a wireless device-to-device (D2D) caching network where n nodes are placed on a regular grid of area A(n). Each node caches L_C*F (coded) bits from a library of size L*F bits, where L is the number of files and F is the size of each file. Each node requests a file from the library independently according to a popularity distribution. Under a commonly used "physical model" and Zipf popularity distribution, we characterize the optimal per-node capacity scaling law for extended networks (i.e., A(n). Moreover, we propose a cache-induced hierarchical cooperation scheme and associated ca…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of network coding at the relay node on the stable throughput rate in multicasting cooperative wireless networks. The proposed protocol adopts Network-level cooperation in contrast to the traditional physical layer cooperative protocols and in addition uses random linear network coding at the relay node. The traffic is assumed to be bursty and the relay node forwards its packets during the periods of source silence which allows better utilization for channel resources. Our results show that cooperation will lead to higher stable throughput rates than con…
We consider content distribution in vehicular ad hoc networks. We assume that a file is encoded using fountain code, and the encoded message is cached at infostations. Vehicles are allowed to download data packets from infostations, which are placed along a highway. In addition, two vehicles can exchange packets with each other when they are in proximity. As long as a vehicle has received enough packets from infostations or from other vehicles, the original file can be recovered. In this work, we show that system throughput increases linearly with number of users, meaning that the system exhib…
In this paper, we introduce a network-decomposed hierarchical cooperation (HC) protocol and completely characterize the corresponding throughput--delay trade-off for a large wireless ad hoc network formed in the context of social relationships. Instead of randomly picking source--destination pairings, we first consider a distance-based social formation model characterized by the social group density $γ$ and the number of social contacts per node, $q$, where the probability that any two nodes in distance $d$ away from each other are socially connected is assumed to be proportional to $d^{-γ}$, …
Optimal delay-throughput trade-offs for two-dimensional i.i.d mobility models have been established in [23], where we showed that the optimal trade-offs can be achieved using rate-less codes when the required delay guarantees are sufficient large. In this paper, we extend the results to other mobility models including two-dimensional hybrid random walk model, one-dimensional i.i.d. mobility model and one-dimensional hybrid random walk model. We consider both fast mobiles and slow mobiles, and establish the optimal delay-throughput trade-offs under some conditions. Joint coding-scheduling algor…
In this paper, we investigate the delay-throughput trade-offs in mobile ad-hoc networks under two-dimensional i.i.d. mobility models. We consider two mobility time-scales: (i) Fast mobility where node mobility is at the same time-scale as data transmissions; (ii) Slow mobility where node mobility is assumed to occur at a much slower time-scale than data transmissions. Given a delay constraint $D,$ the main results are as follows: (1) For the two-dimensional i.i.d. mobility model with fast mobiles, the maximum throughput per source-destination (S-D) pair is shown to be $O(\sqrt{D/n}),$ where $n…
WLAN is one of the most successful applications of wireless communications in daily life because of low cost and ease of deployment. The enabling technique for this success is the use of random access schemes for the wireless channel. Random access requires minimal coordination between the nodes, which considerably reduces the cost of the infrastructure. Recently, cooperative communication in wireless networks has been of increasing interest because it promises higher rates and reliability. An additional MAC overhead is necessary to coordinate the nodes to allow cooperation and this overhead c…
Designing mobiles to harvest ambient energy such as kinetic activities or electromagnetic radiation will enable wireless networks to be self sustaining besides alleviating global warming. In this paper, the spatial throughput of a mobile ad hoc network powered by energy harvesting is analyzed using a stochastic-geometry model. In this model, transmitters are distributed as a Poisson point process and energy arrives at each transmitter randomly with a uniform average rate called the energy arrival rate; upon harvesting sufficient energy, each transmitter transmits with fixed power to an intende…
Throughput scaling laws of an ad hoc network equipping directional antennas at each node are analyzed. More specifically, this paper considers a general framework in which the beam width of each node can scale at an arbitrary rate relative to the number of nodes. We introduce an elastic routing protocol, which enables to increase per-hop distance elastically according to the beam width, while maintaining an average signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio at each receiver as a constant. We then identify fundamental operating regimes characterized according to the beam width scaling and analyze t…
In wireless ad hoc networks, distributed nodes can collaboratively form an antenna array for long-distance communications to achieve high energy efficiency. In recent work, Ochiai, et al., have shown that such collaborative beamforming can achieve a statistically nice beampattern with a narrow main lobe and low sidelobes. However, the process of collaboration introduces significant delay, since all collaborating nodes need access to the same information. In this paper, a technique that significantly reduces the collaboration overhead is proposed. It consists of two phases. In the first phase, …
We develop and analyze new cooperative strategies for ad hoc networks that are more spectrally efficient than classical DF cooperative protocols. Using analog network coding, our strategies preserve the practical half-duplex assumption but relax the orthogonality constraint. The introduction of interference due to non-orthogonality is mitigated thanks to precoding, in particular Dirty Paper coding. Combined with smart power allocation, our cooperation strategies allow to save time and lead to more efficient use of bandwidth and to improved network throughput with respect to classical RDF/PDF.
In this paper, we study cooperative cognitive radio networks consisting of a primary user and multiple secondary users. Secondary users transmit only when primary user is sensed as silent and may interfere with primary transmission due to imperfect sensing. When primary activity is sensed correctly, secondary users cooperate with primary user by assisting retransmission of failed packets of primary user. We analyze packet throughput of primary and secondary users for three variations of proposed cooperation method. Signal flow graph (SFG) based approach is employed to obtain closed form expres…
A network consisting of $n$ source-destination pairs and $m$ relays is considered. Focusing on the large system limit (large $n$), the throughput scaling laws of two-hop relaying protocols are studied for Rayleigh fading channels. It is shown that, under the practical constraints of single-user encoding-decoding scheme, and partial channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters (via integer-value feedback from the receivers), the maximal throughput scales as $\log n$ even if full relay cooperation is allowed. Furthermore, a novel decentralized opportunistic relaying scheme with receiver C…
We study two distinct, but overlapping, networks that operate at the same time, space, and frequency. The first network consists of $n$ randomly distributed \emph{primary users}, which form either an ad hoc network, or an infrastructure-supported ad hoc network with $l$ additional base stations. The second network consists of $m$ randomly distributed, ad hoc secondary users or cognitive users. The primary users have priority access to the spectrum and do not need to change their communication protocol in the presence of secondary users. The secondary users, however, need to adjust their protoc…
In this research, we proposes a new method for cooperation and underlay mode selection in cognitive radio networks. We characterize the maximum achievable throughput of our proposed method of hybrid spectrum sharing. Hybrid spectrum sharing is assumed where the Secondary User (SU) can access the Primary User (PU) channel in two modes, underlay mode or cooperative mode with admission control. In addition to access the channel in the overlay mode, secondary user is allowed to occupy the channel currently occupied by the primary user but with small transmission power. Adding the underlay access m…
Distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) protocols are proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ad-hoc networks with contention-based medium access. The proposed scheduling protocols distinguish themselves from other existing works by their explicit design for system throughput improvement through exploiting spatial multiplexing and diversity in a {\em distributed} manner. As a result, multiple links can be scheduled to simultaneously transmit over the spatial channels formed by transmit/receiver antennas. Taking into account the tradeoff between feedback requirements and system th…
Spatial interference alignment among a finite number of users is proposed as a technique to increase the probability of successful transmission in an interference limited clustered wireless ad hoc network. Using techniques from stochastic geometry, we build on the work of Ganti and Haenggi dealing with Poisson cluster processes with a fixed number of cluster points and provide a numerically integrable expression for the outage probability using an intra-cluster interference alignment strategy with multiplexing gain one. For a special network setting we derive a closed-form upper bound. We demo…
In this work, we analyze the probabilistic cooperation of a full-duplex relay in a multiuser random-access network. The relay is equipped with on/off modes for the receiver and the transmitter independently. These modes are modeled as probabilities by which the receiver and the transmitter are activated. We provide analytical expressions for the performance of the relay queue, such as arrival and service rates, stability conditions, and the average queue size. We optimize the relay's operation setup to maximize the network-wide throughput while, simultaneously, we keep the relay's queue stable…
Wireless local area networks (WLAN) still suffer from a severe performance discrepancy between different users in the uplink. This is because of the spatially varying channel conditions provided by the wireless medium. Cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocols as for example CoopMAC were proposed to mitigate this problem. In this work, it is shown that cooperation implies for cooperating nodes a tradeoff between throughput and bit-cost, which is the energy needed to transmit one bit. The tradeoff depends on the degree of cooperation. For carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) based netwo…
Throughput capacity is a critical parameter for the design and evaluation of ad-hoc wireless networks. Consider n identical randomly located nodes, on a unit area, forming an ad-hoc wireless network. Assuming a fixed per node transmission capability of T bits per second at a fixed range, it has been shown that the uniform throughput capacity per node r(n) is Theta((T)/(sqrt{n log n})), a decreasing function of node density n. However an alternate communication model may also be considered, with each node constrained to a maximum transmit power P_0 and capable of utilizing W Hz of bandwidth. Un…
We propose a cellular architecture that combines multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) downlink with opportunistic use of unlicensed ISM bands to establish device-to-device (D2D) cooperation. The architecture consists of a physical-layer cooperation scheme based on forming downlink virtual MIMO channels through D2D relaying, and a novel resource allocation strategy for such D2D-enabled networks. We prove the approximate optimality of the physical-layer scheme, and demonstrate that such cooperation boosts the effective SNR of the weakest user in the system, especially in the many-user regime, due to multius…
In this paper, we consider an energy harvesting cognitive radio network (EH-CRN), where a primary and a secondary user coexist in underlay mode. Both the transmitters have energy harvesting capability and are equipped with finite capacity battery to store the harvested energy. In addition, the secondary user (SU) has an independent energy transfer unit such that it can transfer some portion of it's harvested energy to the primary user (PU). We obtain an optimal transmit power and energy transfer policy for single-slot and a suboptimal policy for multi-slot scenario maximizing the number of bit…
This letter considers two groups of source nodes. Each group transmits packets to its own designated destination node over single-hop links and via a cluster of relay nodes shared by both groups. In an effort to boost reliability without sacrificing throughput, a scheme is proposed, whereby packets at the relay nodes are combined using two methods; packets delivered by different groups are mixed using non-orthogonal multiple access principles, while packets originating from the same group are mixed using random linear network coding. An analytical framework that characterizes the performance o…
A whole suite of innovative technologies and architectures have emerged in response to the rapid growth of wireless traffic. This paper studies an integrated network design that boosts system capacity through cooperation between wireless access points (APs) and a satellite for enhancing the network's spectral efficiency. We first mathematically derive an achievable throughput expression for the uplink (UL) data transmission over spatially correlated Rician channels. Our generic achievable throughput expression is applicable for arbitrary received signal detection techniques under realistic imp…
One of the major challenges in the medium access control (MAC) protocol design over cognitive Ad Hoc networks (CAHNs) is how to efficiently utilize multiple opportunistic channels, which vary dynamically and are subject to limited power resources. To overcome this challenge, in this paper we first propose a novel diversity technology called \emph{Multi-Channel Diversity} (MCD), allowing each secondary node to use multiple channels simultaneously with only one radio per node under the upperbounded power. Using the proposed MCD, we develop a MCD based MAC (MCD-MAC) protocol, which can efficientl…
In this paper, we study a multi-cluster Wireless Powered Communication Network (WPCN) where each cluster of users cooperate with a Cluster Head (CH) and a Hybrid Access Point (HAP). All users are equipped with multiple antennas. This HAP employs beamforming to deliver energy to the users in the downlink phase. The users of each cluster transmit their signals to the HAP and to their CHs in the uplink phase. In the next step the CHs first relay the signals of their cluster users and then transmit their own information to the HAP. We design the Energy Beamforming (EB) matrix, transmit covariance …
We study the effect of node mobility on the throughput scaling of the covert communication over a wireless adhoc network. It is assumed that $n$ mobile nodes want to communicate each other in a unit disk while keeping the presence of the communication secret from each of $Θ(n^s)$ non-colluding wardens ($s>0$). Our results show that the node mobility greatly improves the throughput scaling, compared to the case of fixed node location. In particular, for $0<s<1$, the aggregate throughput scaling is shown to be linear in $n$ when the number of channel uses that each warden uses to judge the prese…
Multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are a prime candidate for use in massive connection density in machine-type communication (MTC) networks. One of the key challenges of MTC networks is to obtain accurate channel state information (CSI) at the access point (AP) so that the spectral efficiency can be improved by enabling enhanced MIMO techniques. However, current communication mechanisms relying upon frequency division duplexing (FDD) might not fully support an enormous number of devices due to the rate-constrained limited feedback and the time-consuming scheduling architec…
In a cognitive radio (CR) network, CR users intend to operate over the same spectrum band licensed to legacy networks. A tradeoff exists between protecting the communications in legacy networks and maximizing the throughput of CR transmissions, especially when CR links are unstable due to the mobility of CR users. Because of the non-zero probability of false detection and implementation complexity of spectrum sensing, in this paper, we investigate a sensing-free spectrum sharing scenario for mobile CR ad hoc networks to improve the frequency reuse by incorporating the location awareness capabi…
This paper presents a new cooperative wireless communication network strategy that incorporates energy cooperation and data cooperation. The model establishment, design goal formulations, and algorithms for throughput maximization of the proposed protocol are presented and illustrated using a three-node network with two energy harvesting (EH) user nodes and a destination node. Transmission models are established from the performance analysis for a total of four scenarios. Based on the models, we seek to find optimal energy management strategies by jointly optimizing time allocation for each us…
This paper proposes a cooperation protocol between a secondary user (SU) and a primary user (PU) which dedicates a free frequency subband for the SU if cooperation results in energy saving. Time is slotted and users are equipped with buffers. Under the proposed protocol, the PU releases portion of its bandwidth for secondary transmission. Moreover, it assigns a portion of the time slot duration for the SU to relay primary packets and achieve a higher successful packet reception probability at the primary receiver. We assume that the PU has three states: idle, forward, and retransmission states…
In this work, we consider a multi-antenna cognitive ad hoc network (CAHNet) with heterogeneous delay requirements. To fulfill the interference and delay constraints simultaneously, we propose to perform adaptive zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) at cognitive transmitters according to interference channel state information (CSI). To assist the CAHNet to obtain the interference CSI, we use a win-win inter-network cooperation strategy, namely quantized interference CSI feedback from the primary network to CAHNet through a feedback link, under the condition that the CAHNet pays a proper price for it…
The benefit of multi-antenna receivers is investigated in wireless ad hoc networks, and the main finding is that network throughput can be made to scale linearly with the number of receive antennas nR even if each transmitting node uses only a single antenna. This is in contrast to a large body of prior work in single-user, multiuser, and ad hoc wireless networks that have shown linear scaling is achievable when multiple receive and transmit antennas (i.e., MIMO transmission) are employed, but that throughput increases logarithmically or sublinearly with nR when only a single transmit antenna …
To achieve the potential in providing high throughput for cellular networks by device-to-device (D2D) communications, the interference among D2D links should be carefully managed. In this paper, we propose an opportunistic cooperation strategy for D2D transmission by exploiting the caching capability at the users to control the interference among D2D links. We consider overlay inband D2D, divide the D2D users into clusters, and assign different frequency bands to cooperative and non-cooperative D2D links. To provide high opportunity for cooperative transmission, we introduce a caching policy. …
This paper deals with throughput scaling laws for random ad-hoc wireless networks in a rich scattering environment. We develop schemes to optimize the ratio, $ρ(n)$ of achievable network sum capacity to the sum of the point-to-point capacities of source-destinations pairs operating in isolation. For fixed SNR networks, i.e., where the worst case SNR over the source-destination pairs is fixed independent of $n$, we show that collaborative strategies yield a scaling law of $ρ(n) = {\cal O}(\frac{1}{n^{1/3}})$ in contrast to multi-hop strategies which yield a scaling law of $ρ(n) = {\cal O}(\frac…
Most work on wireless network throughput ignores the temporal correlation inherent to wireless channels because it degrades tractability. To better model and quantify the temporal variations of wireless network throughput, this paper introduces a metric termed ergodic transmission capacity (ETC), which includes spatial and temporal ergodicity. All transmitters in the network form a homogeneous Poisson point process and all channels are modeled by a finite state Markov chain. The bounds on outage probability and ETC are characterized, and their scaling behaviors for a sparse and dense network a…
Motivated by the demand of reliable and low latency communications, we employ tools from information theory, stochastic processes and queueing theory, in order to provide a comprehensive framework regarding the analysis of a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) network with bursty traffic, in the finite blocklength regime. Specifically, we re-examine the stability conditions of a noncooperative TDMA multiple access channel, evaluate the optimal throughput, and identify the optimal trade-off between data packet size and latency. The evaluation is performed both numerically and via the proposed …
We study the throughput-delay performance tradeoff in large-scale wireless ad hoc networks. It has been shown that the per source-destination pair throughput can be improved from Theta(1/sqrt(n log n)) to Theta(1) if nodes are allowed to move and a 2-hop relay scheme is employed. The price paid for such an improvement on throughput is large delay. Indeed, the delay scaling of the 2-hop relay scheme is Theta(n log n) under the random walk mobility model. In this paper, we employ coding techniques to improve the throughput-delay trade-off for mobile wireless networks. For the random walk mobilit…
Cooperative communications have emerged as a significant concept to improve reliability and throughput in wireless systems. On the other hand, WLANs based on random access mechanism have become popular due to ease of deployment and low cost. Since cooperation introduces extra transmissions among the cooperating nodes and therefore increases the number of packet collisions, it is not clear whether there is any benefit from using physical layer cooperation under random access. In this paper, we develop new low complexity cooperative protocols for random access that outperform the conventional no…
In millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, narrow beam operations overcome severe channel attenuations, reduce multiuser interference, and thus introduce the new concept of noise-limited mmWave wireless networks. The regime of the network, whether noise-limited or interference-limited, heavily reflects on the medium access control (MAC) layer throughput and on proper resource allocation and interference management strategies. Yet, alternating presence of these regimes and, more importantly, their dependence on the mmWave design parameters are ignored in the current approaches to mmWave…
Multi-cell cooperation (MCC) mitigates intercell interference and improves throughput at the cell edge. This paper considers a cooperative downlink, whereby cell-edge mobiles are served by multiple cooperative base stations. The cooperating base stations transmit identical signals over paths with non-identical path losses, and the receiving mobile performs diversity combining. The analysis in this paper is driven by a new expression for the conditional outage probability when signals arriving over different paths are combined in the presence of noise and interference, where the conditioning is…
In this work, we consider a random access Internet of Things IoT wireless network assisted by two aggregators collecting information from two disjoint groups of sensors. The nodes and the aggregators are transmitting in a random access manner under slotted time, the aggregators perform network-level cooperation for the data collection. The aggregators are equipped with queues to store data packets that are transmitted by the network nodes and relaying them to the destination node. We characterize the throughput performance of the IoT network and we obtain the stability conditions for the queue…
Transmission capacity of an ad hoc wireless network is analyzed when each node of the network harvests energy from nature, e.g. solar, wind, vibration etc. Transmission capacity is the maximum allowable density of nodes, satisfying a per transmitter-receiver rate, and an outage probability constraint. Energy arrivals at each node are assumed to follow a Bernoulli distribution, and each node stores energy using an energy buffer/battery. For ALOHA medium access protocol (MAP), optimal transmission probability that maximizes the transmission capacity is derived as a function of the energy arrival…
Cognitive radio (CR) technology will have significant impacts on upper layer performance in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). In this paper, we study topology control and routing in CR-MANETs. We propose a distributed Prediction-based Cognitive Topology Control (PCTC) scheme to provision cognition capability to routing in CR-MANETs. PCTC is a midware-like cross-layer module residing between CR module and routing. The proposed PCTC scheme uses cognitive link availability prediction, which is aware of the interference to primary users, to predict the available duration of links in CR-MANETs. Base…
