The generic magnetic phase diagram of multiferroic RMn$_2$O$_5$ (with R=Y, Ho, Tb, Er, Tm), which allows different sequences of ordered magnetic structures for different R's and different control parameters, is described using order parameters which explicitly incorporate the magnetic symmetry. A phenomenological magneto-electric coupling is used to explain why some of these magnetic phases are also ferroelectric. Several new experiments, which can test this theory, are proposed.
Hexagonal RMnO3 manganites are improper ferroelectrics in which the electric polarization is a by-product of the tripling of the unit cell. In YMnO3, there is a second transition at ~ 920K whose nature remains unexplained. We argue that this transition can be seen as a sort of hidden order in which a residual symmetry displayed by the trimerization order parameter is spontaneously broken. This additional order gives rise to twelve structural domains instead of six, and structural domain boundaries that can be either ferroelectric or non-ferroelectric domain walls.
We investigate the electromagnon in magnetoferroelectrics RMn$_2$O$_5$ using combined molecular-spin dynamics simulations. We identify the origin of the electromagnon modes observed in the optical spectra and reproduce the most salient features of the electromagnon in these compounds. We find that the electromagnon frequencies are very sensitive to the magnetic wave vector along the $a$ direction. We further investigate the electromagnon in magnetic field. Although the modes frequencies change significant under magnetic field, the static dielectric constant electromagnon does not change much i…
We have used a shell model to study the phonon dynamics of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 (R= Tb, Dy, Ho). The calculated phonon dynamical properties, crystal structure, Raman frequencies and specific heat are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data. Besides, the phonon density of states, elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves along high symmetry directions (sigma, delta and lambda) have also been computed. A zone-center imaginary Au mode is revealed in these phonon dispersion curves, which indicates the occurrence of metastability of the perovskite phase. The…
An effective model is developed to explain the phase diagram and the mechanism of magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics, $RMn_2O_5$. We show that the nature of magnetoelectric coupling in $RMn_2O_5$ is a coupling between two Ising-type orders, namely, the ferroelectric order in the b axis, and the coupled magnetic order between two frustrated antiferromagnetic chains. The frustrated magnetic structure drives the system to a commensurate-incommensurate phase transition, which can be understood as a competition between a collinear or col-plane order stemming from the `order by disorder' mech…
The magnetic properties of RMn2O5 multiferrroics as obtained by unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction experiments are reviewed. We discuss the qualitative features of the magnetic phase diagram both in zero magnetic field and in field and analyze the commensurate magnetic structure and its coupling to an applied electric field. The origin of ferrolectricity is discussed based on calculations of the ferroelectric polarization predicted by different microscopic coupling mechanisms (exchange striction and cycloidal spin-orbit models). A minimal model containing a small set of parameters i…
Controlling material properties by modulating the crystalline structure has been attempted using various techniques, e.g., hydrostatic pressure, chemical pressure, and epitaxy. These techniques succeed to improve properties and achieve desired functionalities by changing the unit cell in all dimensions. In order to obtain a more detailed understanding on the relation between the crystal lattice and material properties, it is desirable to investigate the influence of a smaller number of parameters. Here, we utilize the combination of chemical pressure and epitaxy to modify a single lattice para…
Starting from the irreducible representations of the group of the wave vector we construct the spin wave functions consistent with inversion symmetry, neglected in the usual representation analysis. We obtain the relation between the basis functions of different members of the star of the wave vector. We introduce order parameters and determine their transformation properties under the operations of the space group of the paramagnetic crystal. The results are applied to construct terms in the magnetoelectric interaction which are quadratic and quartic in the magnetic order parameters. The high…
The origin of the spiral spin-order in perovskite multiferroic manganites $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($RE=$ Tb or Dy) is here investigated using a two $e_{\rm g}$-orbitals double-exchange model. Our main result is that the experimentally observed spiral phase can be stabilized by introducing a relatively weak next-nearest-neighbor superexchange coupling ($\sim10%$ of the nearest-neighbor superexchange). Moreover, the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion is also shown to be essential to obtain a realistic spiral period. Supporting our conclusions, the generic phase diagram of undoped perovskite manganites is obtai…
Specific features of the magnetic properties and magnetic dynamics of isolated phase separation domains in GdMn2O5 and Gd0.8Ce0.2Mn2O5 have been investigated. These domains represent 1D superlattices consisting of dielectric and conducting layers with the ferromagnetic orientation of their spins. A set of ferromagnetic resonances of separate superlattice layers has been studied. The properties of the 1D superlattices in GdMn2O5 and Gd0.8Ce0.2Mn2O5 are compared with the properties of the previously investigated RMn2O5 (R = Eu, Tb, Er, and Bi) series. The similarity of the properties for all the…
The electric polarization and its magnetic origins in multiferroic RMn2O5, where R is rare-earth ion, are still issues under debate. In this work, the temperature-dependent electric polarization of DyMn2O5, the most attractive member of this RMn2O5 family, is investigated using the pyroelectric current method upon varying endpoint temperature of the electric cooling, plus the positive-up-negative-down (PUND) technique. It is revealed that DyMn2O5 at low temperature does exhibit the unusual ferrielectricity rather than ferroelectricity, characterized by two interactive and anti-parallel ferroel…
The symmetry properties, order parameters, and magnetoelectric phase diagrams of multiferroics are discussed. After brief reviews of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$, TbMnO$_3$, and RbFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$, we present a detailed analysis of RMn$_2$O$_5$ (with R=Y, Ho, Dy, Er, Tb, Tm).
The optical spectra in the family of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 is a great puzzle. Current models can not explain the fact that two strong electromagnons are present in the non-collinear spin cycloidal phase, with only one electromagnon surviving the transition into the collinear spin sinusoidal phase. We show that this is a signature of the presence of anomalous magnetoelectric coupling that breaks rotational invariance in spin space and generates oscillatory polarization in the ground state.
Strong anomalies of the thermal expansion coefficients at the magnetic and ferroelectric transitions have been detected in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$. Their correlation with anomalies of the specific heat and the dielectric constant is discussed. The results provide evidence for the magnetic origin of the ferroelectricity mediated by strong spin-lattice coupling in the compounds. Neutron scattering data for $HoMn_2O_5$ indicate a spin reorientation at the two low-temperature phase transitions.
The effect of rare-earth ions (R = Er^{3+}, Tb^{3+}) with strong spin-orbit coupling on the dielectric properties and the electric polarization induced by local polar phase separation domains in RMn_2O_5 multiferroics has been studied. These parameters were found to be qualitatively distinguished from those studied before in GdMn_2O_5, in which Gd^{3+} ion in the ground ^8S_{7/2} state is weakly bounded with the lattice. It is shown that the properties of the polar phase separation domains, which form in the subsystem of Mn^{3+} and Mn^{4+} ions, are substantially dependent on the values of cr…
The present work aims to describe, within a single phenomenological approach, the specific sequence of phase transitions observed in the rare-earth manganites RMnO3 at zero magnetic field. It is shown that a single integrated description of the temperature versus composition phase diagrams of these compounds and related solid solutions can be obtained within the scope of Landau theory by adopting the so called type-II description of the modulated phases.
In order to investigate nature of the antiferromagnetic structures in perovskite RMnO3, we study a Heisenberg J1-J2 model with bond alternation using analytical and numerical approaches. The magnetic phase diagram which includes incommensurate spiral states and commensurate collinear states is reproduced. We discuss that the magnetic structure with up-up-down-down spin configuration (E-type structure) and the ferroelectricity emerge cooperatively to stabilize this phase. Magnetoelastic couplings are crucial to understand the magnetic and electric phase diagram of RMnO3.
With the perovskite multiferroic RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy) as guidance, we argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provides the microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and incommensurate magnetism. We use Monte-Carlo simulations and zero temperature exact calculations to study a model incorporating the double-exchange, superexchange, Jahn-Teller and DMI terms. The phase diagram contains a multiferroic phase between A and E antiferromagnetic phases, in excellent agreement with experiments.
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites RMnO3 are theoretically studied by focusing on crucial roles of the symmetric magnetostriction or the Peierls-type spin-phonon coupling through extending our previous work [M. Mochizuki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037205 (2010)]. We first construct a microscopic classical Heisenberg model for RMnO3 including the frustrated spin exchanges, single-ion anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We also incorporate the lattice degree of freedom coupled to the Mn spins via the Peierls-type magnetostriction. By analyzing t…
Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e. concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte-Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as …
The low-temperature ferroelectric polarization of multiferroic $YMn_2O_5$ is completely reversed at a critical pressure of 10 kbar and the phase transition from the incommensurate to the commensurate magnetic phase is induced by pressures above 14 kbar. The high-pressure data correlate with thermal expansion measurements indicating a significant lattice strain at the low-temperature transition into the incommensurate phase. The results support the exchange striction model for the ferroelectricity in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$ compounds and they show the importance of magnetic frustration as well …
Electric and magnetic properties of multiferroic GdMn2O5 in external magnetic fields were investigated to map out the magnetoelectric phases in this material. Due to strong magnetoelectric coupling, the dielectric permittivity is highly sensitive to phase boundaries in GdMn2O5, which allowed to construct the field-temperature phase diagrams. Several phase transitions are observed which are strongly field-dependent with respect to field orientation and strength. The phase diagram for a magnetic field along the crystallographic a-axis corresponds well to a polarization step, as induced by 90 deg…
The electric polarization hysteresis loops and remanent polarization were revealed in multiferroics RMn$_2$O$_5$ with $R = Gd$ and $Bi$ at wide temperature interval from 5 K up to 330 K. Until recently, the long-range ferroelectric order having an exchange-striction magnetic nature had been observed in RMn$_2$O$_5$ only at low temperatures ($T\leq T_C = 30$ -- 35 K). We believe that the polarization we observed was caused by the frozen superparaelectric state which was formed by the restricted polar domains resulting from phase separation and charge carriers self-organization. At some sufficie…
We theoretically study origins of the ferroelectricity in the multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, by constructing a realistic spin model including the spin-phonon coupling, which reproduces the entire experimental phase diagram in the plane of temperature and Mn-O-Mn bond angle for the first time. Surprisingly we reveal a significant contribution of the symmetric (S.S)-type magnetostriction to the ferroelectricity even in a spin-spiral-based multiferroic phase, which can be larger than the usually expected antisymmetric (SxS)-type contribution. This explains well t…
We study theoretically the electromagnon and its optical spectrum (OS) of the terahertz-frequency regime in the magnetic-spiral-induced multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, taking into account the elliptical deformation or the higher harmonics of the spiral spin configuration, which has been missed so far. A realistic spin Hamiltonian, which gives phase diagrams in agreement with experiments, resolves a long standing puzzle, i.e., the double-peak structure of the OS with a larger low-energy peak originating from magnon modes hybridized with the zone-edge state. We a…
We report on structural, magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of (Eu:Y)MnO3 for Y doping levels 0 <= x < 1. This system resembles the multiferroic perovskite manganites RMnO3 (with R= Gd, Dy, Tb) but without the interference of magnetic contributions of the 4f-ions. In addition, it offers the possibility to continuously tune the influence of the A-site ionic radii. For small concentrations x <= 0.1 we find a canted antiferromagnetic and paraelectric groundstate. For higher concentrations x <= 0.3 ferroelectric polarization coexists with the features of a long wavelength incommens…
We investigate the phase diagrams of RMn$_2$O$_5$ via a first-principles effective-Hamiltonian method. We are able to reproduce the most important features of the complicated magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The calculated polarization as a function of temperature agrees very well with experiments. The dielectric-constant step at the commensurate-to -incommensurate magnetic phase transition is well reproduced. The microscopic mechanisms for the phase transitions are discussed.
InMnO$_3$ is a peculiar member of the hexagonal manganites h-RMnO$_3$ (where R is a rare earth metal element), showing crystalline, electronic and magnetic properties at variance with the other compounds of the family. We have studied high quality samples synthesized at high pressure and temperature by powder neutron diffraction. The position of the Mn ions is found to be close to the threshold $\it{x}=1/3$ where superexchange Mn-Mn interactions along the $\it{c}$ axis compensate. Magnetic long range order occurs below $T_{\rm N}$= 120(2) K with a magnetic unit cell doubled along $\it{c}$, whe…
In this contribution to the special issue on multiferroics we focus on multiferroicity driven by different forms of charge ordering. We will present the generic mechanisms by which charge ordering can induce ferroelectricity in magnetic systems. There is a number of specific classes of materials for which this is relevant. We will discuss in some detail $(i)$ perovskite manganites of the type (PrCa)MnO$_3$, $(ii)$ the complex and interesting situation in magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$, $(iii)$ strongly ferroelectric frustrated LuFe$_2$O$_4$, $(iv)$ an example of a quasi one-dimensional organic system. …
The complex interplay between the 3d and 4f moments in hexagonal ErMnO3 is investigated by magnetization, optical second harmonic generation, and neutron-diffraction measurements. We revise the phase diagram and provide a microscopic model for the emergent spin structures with a special focus on the intermediary phase transitions. Our measurements reveal that the 3d exchange between Mn^{3+} ions dominates the magnetic symmetry at 10 K < T < T_N with Mn^3+ order according to the Gamma_4 representation triggering 4f ordering according to the same representation on the Er^{3+}(4b) site. Below 10 …
The structural transformation of multiferroic EuTiO$_3$ has been intensively investigated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction at pressures up to 50.3 GPa and temperatures from 50 to 500 K. An antiferrodistortive phase transition from cubic Pm-3m to tetragonal I4/mcm space group has been observed, identical to the one that has been previously explored at ambient pressure and low temperatures. Several compression/decompression cycles at different temperatures have been carried out to accurately map the transition, and as a result a P-T phase diagram for EuTiO$_3$ has been constructed. The observed …
The Landau theory was applied to treat the phase diagrams for a multiferroic with two second order phase transitions taking into account the coupling of the primary order parameters with strain. Two order parameters are coupled biquadratically which corresponds to the magnetoelectric materials. The coupling with strain is assumed to be linear in strain and quadratic in order parameters. Three ordered phases are discussed. Analytic relationships were obtained for the phase transition temperatures and for elastic modulus changes through the phase transitions. Strong influence of the coupling wit…
The pressure-temperature phase diagram of multiferroic $Ni_3V_2O_8$ is investigated for hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa. The stability range of the ferroelectric phase associated with the incommensurate helical spin order is reduced by pressure and ferroelectricity is completely suppressed at the critical pressure of 1.64 GPa at 6.2 K. Thermal expansion measurements at ambient pressure show strong step-like anomalies of the lattice parameters associated with the lock-in transition into the commensurate paraelectric phase. The expansion anomalies are highly anisotropic, the related volume cha…
The incommensurate magnetic structures and phase diagrams of multiferroics has been explored on the basis of accurate micromagnetic analysis taking into account the spin flexoelecric interaction (Lifshitz invariant). The objects of the study are BiFeO_3-like single crystals and epitaxial films grown on the <111> substrates. The main control parameters are the magnetic field, the magnetic anisotropy, and the epitaxial strain in the case of films. We predict novel quasi-cycloidal structures induced by external magnetic field or by epitaxial strain in the BiFeO_3-films. Phase diagrams representin…
Macroscopic properties of multiferroics, the systems that show simultaneously two types of ordering, could be controlled by the external fields of different nature. We analyze the behavior of multiferroics with antiferro-(AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) ordering under the action of external magnetic and stress fields. A combination of these two fields makes it possible to achieve macroscopic states with different domain structures. The two-domain state obtained in this way shows a linear dependence of macroscopic strain vs magnetic field which is unusual for AFMs. A small but nonzero stress applie…
The magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$ is investigated by magnetostriction measurements along the three crystallographic orientations. Strong lattice anomalies as a function of the magnetic field are detected at the low temperature magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The sign and magnitude of the magnetostrictive coefficient as well as the lattice anomalies at the transitions are correlated with the Dy moment order and with the sharp changes of the dielectric constant and the ferroelectric polarization. With the magnetic field applied along the c-axis a new high-fiel…
We present a theoretical analysis of the temperature-magnetic field-concentration phase diagram of the multiferroic Mn$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$WO$_{4}$ (M=Fe, Zn, Mg), which exhibits three ordered phases, with collinear and non-collinear incommensurate and with a commensurate magnetic order. The middle phase is also ferroelectric. The analysis uses a semi-phenomenological Landau theory, based on a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a single-ion anisotropy. With a small number of adjustable parameters, the Landau theory gives an excellent fit to all three transition lines, as well as the magnetic and the ferroe…
This review devoted to multiferroic properties of Bismuth-based perovskites falls into two parts. The first part focuses on BiFeO3 and summarizes the recent progress made in the studies of its pressure-temperature phase diagram and magnetoelectric coupling phenomena. The second part discusses in a more general way the issue of polar - and multiferroic - phases in BiBO3 perovskites and the competition between ferroelectricity and other structural instabilities, from an inventory of recently synthetized compounds.

We study the existence of incommensurate phases in the phase diagram of the two orbital double exchange model coupled with Jahn-Teller phonons and with superexchange interactions. In agreement with experimental results, we find that undoped manganites $RMnO_3$ ($R$ being some rare earth element) show temperature induced commensurate-incommensurate phase transitions. In the incommensurate phase the magnetic wave vector varies with temperature. The incommensurate phase arises from the competition between the short range antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction and the long range ferromagnetic…
The complete magnetic and multiferroic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$WO$_4$ single crystals is investigated by means of magnetic, heat capacity, and polarization experiments. We show that the ferroelectric polarization $\overrightarrow{P}$ in the multiferroic state abruptly changes its direction twice upon increasing Co content, x. At x$_{c1}$=0.075, $\overrightarrow{P}$ rotates from the $b-$axis into the $a-c$ plane and at x$_{c2}$=0.15 it flips back to the $b-$axis. The origin of the multiple polarization flops is identified as an effect of the Co anisotropy on the orientation and shape…
We have carried out dc magnetization (M), heat-capacity (C) and dielectric studies down to 2K for the compound GdCrTiO5, crystallizing in orthorhombic Pbam structure, in which well-known multiferroics RMn2O5 (R= Rare-earths) form. The points of emphasis are: (i) The magnetic ordering temperature of Cr appears to be suppressed compared to that in isostructural Nd counterpart, NdCrTiO5, for which the Neel temperature is about 21 K. This finding on the Gd compound suggests that Nd 4f orbital plays a role on the magnetism of Cr in contrast to a proposal long ago. (ii) Dielectric constant does not …
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced b…
The phase diagram of quarter-hole-doped perovskite manganites is investigated using the doubleexchange model. An exotic striped type-II multiferroic phase, where 25% of the nearest-neighbor spin couplings are orthogonal to each other, is found in the narrow-bandwidth region. Comparing with the spiral-spin ordering phase of undoped manganites, the multiferroic Curie temperature of the new phase is estimated to be ~4 times higher, while the ferroelectric polarization is similar in magnitude. Our study provides a path for noncollinear spin multiferroics based on electronic self-organization, diff…
High resolution ultrasonic velocity measurements have been used to determine the temperature -- magnetic-field phase diagram of the monoclinic multiferroic CuO. A new transition at TN3 = 230 K, corresponding to an intermediate state between the antiferromagnetic non-collinear spiral phase observed below TN2 = 229.3 K and the paramagnetic phase, is revealed. Anomalies associated with a first order transition to the commensurate collinear phase are also observed at TN1 = 213 K. For fields with B along the b axis, a spin-flop transition is detected between 11 T - 13 T at lower temperatures. Moreo…
Anisotropic multiferroic properties of SrMnGe2O6 pyroxene single crystals were systematically investigated by means of magnetization, heat capacity, pyroelectric current measurement and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Single crystal neutron diffraction allows us to unambiguously reveal the presence of two incommensurate magnetic orderings: a non-polar amplitude-modulated collinear sinusoidal magnetic structure emerges at TN1=4.36(2)K followed by a polar elliptical cycloidal spin structure below TN2=4.05(2)K. Pyroelectric current measurements on single crystal confirm the …
The high Curie temperature multiferroic compound, CuO, has a quasidegenerate magnetic ground state that makes it prone to manipulation by the so called ``order-by-disorder'' mechanism. First principle computations supplemented with Monte Carlo simulations and experiments show that isovalent doping allows to stabilize the multiferroic phase in non-ferroelectric regions of the pristine material phase-diagram with experiments reaching a 250% widening of the ferroelectric temperature window with 5% of Zn doping. Our results allow to validate the importance of a quasidegenerate ground state on prom…
Complete magnetoelectric (ME) phase diagrams of orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ with and without magnetic moments on the $R$ ions have been established. Three kinds of multiferroic ground states, the $ab$-cycloidal, the $bc$-cycloidal, and the collinear $E$-type phases, have been identified by the distinct ME responses. The electric polarization of the $E$-type phase dominated by the symmetric spin exchange ($bm{S}_{i} cdot bm{S}_{j}$) is more than 10 times as large as that of the $bc$-cycloidal phase dominated by the antisymmetric one ($bm{S}_{i} times bm{S}_{j}$), and the ME response is enhanced n…
We use \textit{ab initio} calculations to systematically study the phase diagram of multiferroic Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$MnO$_3$ ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) as a function of chemical doping, epitaxial strain and external pressure. We find that by replacing Sr with Ba in cubic SrMnO$_3$ and imposing epitaxial strain, the material can be tuned to the vicinity of a first order transition between two multiferroic phases, one antiferromagnetic with a smaller polarization and one ferromagnetic with a larger polarization. A giant effective magneto-electric coupling and cross-field control (electric field control of …
Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory we study the complex interplay between structural antiferrodistortive order parameter (oxygen octahedron rotations), polarization and magnetization in EuxSr1-xTiO3 nanotubes and nanowires. We calculated EuxSr1-xTiO3 bulk and nanosystem phase diagrams, which include the antiferrodistortive, ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Our calculation shows the presence of "triple" antiferrodistortive-ferroelectric-ferromagnetic phases for EuxSr1-xTiO3 nanowires and nanotubes. presents interest for fundamental study and can be important for t…
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
We have investigated the effect of epitaxial strain on the magnetic properties and $B$-site cation ordering in multiferroic Bi$_2$FeCrO$_6$ (001) thin films using a density-functional theory approach. We find that in thin films with rock-salt ordering of Fe and Cr the ground state is characterised by C-type anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) order. This is in contrast to the bulk form of the material which was predicted to be a ferrimagnet with G-type AFM order. Furthermore, the cation ordered thin-films undergo a transition with epitaxial strain from C to A-type AFM order. Other magnetic orders appear …
The theoretical description of the nanostructured Pb(Fe1/2Ta1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFTx-PZT(1-x)) and Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFNx-PZT(1-x)) intriguing ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric properties at temperatures higher than 100 K are absent to date. The goal of this work is to propose the theoretical description of the physical nature and the mechanisms of the aforementioned properties, including room temperature ferromagnetism, phase diagram dependence on the composition x with a special attention to the multiferroic properties at room temperature, including anomalo…
Multiferroic order with the engineered levels of strain in monolayer NiI$_{2}$ is explored based on density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Through the investigation of strain-free monolayer NiI$_{2}$, we find that the first nearest neighbor and third nearest neighbor exchange interactions play an essential role in the formation of its magnetic phase diagrams. The competition of these interactions induces magnetic frustration, leading to the formation of proper-screw helimagnetic ground state. We further show that these conclusions drawing from the strain-free monol…
We report electric polarization and magnetization measurements in single crystals of double perovskite Lu2MnCoO6 using pulsed magnetic fields and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) in DC magnetic fields. we observe well-resolved magnetic field-induced changes in the electric polarization in single crystals and thereby resolve the question about whether multiferroic behavior is intrinsic to these materials or an extrinsic feature of polycrystals. We find electric polarization along the crystalline b-axis, that is suppressed by applying a magnetic fields along c-axis and advance a model fo…
We report the discovery of a complete suppression of ferroelectricity in $MnWO_4$ by 10 % iron substitution and its restoration in external magnetic fields. The spontaneous polarization in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$ arises below 12 K in external fields above 4 T. The magnetic/ferroelectric phase diagram is constructed from the anomalies of the dielectric constant, polarization, magnetization, and heat capacity. The observations are qualitatively described by a mean field model with competing interactions and strong anisotropy. We propose that the magnetic field induces a non-collinear inversion sy…
We use a combination of symmetry analysis, phenomenological modelling and first-principles density functional theory to explore the interplay between the magnetic ground state and the detailed atomic structure in the hexagonal rare-earth manganites. We find that the magnetic ordering is sensitive to a breathing mode distortion of the Mn and O ions in the $ab$ plane, which is described by the K\textsubscript{1} mode of the high-symmetry structure. Our density functional calculations of the magnetic interactions indicate that this mode particularly affects the single-ion anisotropy and the inter…
The magnetic and multiferroic phase diagram of Mn$_{0.85}$Co$_{0.15}$WO$_4$ single crystals is investigated by means of magnetic, heat capacity, dielectric, polarization, and neutron scattering experiments. Three magnetic phase transitions are detected through distinct anomalies in all physical quantities. The ferroelectric polarization is observed only along the b-axis below 10 K but not along the a-axis as recently suggested. The magnetic phases studied by neutron scattering are very complex. Up to four different magnetic structures, partially coexisting at certain temperature ranges, have b…
The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spi…
