The structural parameters of a magnitude-limited sample of 148 unbarred S0-Sb galaxies were derived to study the correlations between bulge and disk parameters as well as the probability distribution function (PDF) of the intrinsic equatorial ellipticity of bulges. A new algorithm (GASP2D) was used to perform the bidimensional bulge-disk decomposition of the J-band galaxy images extracted from the archive of the 2MASS survey. The PDF of intrinsic ellipticities was derived from the distribution of the observed ellipticities of the bulges and misalignments between the the bulges and disks. About 80% of the observed bulges are not oblate but triaxial ellipsoids. Their mean axial ratio in the equatorial plane is <B/A>=0.85. There is not significant dependence of their PDF on morphology, light concentration or luminosity. This has to be explained by the different scenarios of bulge formation.
(Abridged) A variety of formation scenarios was proposed to explain the diversity of properties observed in bulges. Studying their intrinsic shape can help in constraining the dominant mechanism at the epochs of their assembly. The structural parameters of a magnitude-limited sample of 148 unbarred S0--Sb galaxies were derived in order to study the correlations between bulges and disks as well as the probability distribution function (PDF) of the intrinsic equatorial ellipticity of bulges. It is presented a new fitting algorithm (GASP2D) to perform the two-dimensional photometric decomposition…
We have compiled a sample of early-type cluster galaxies from 0 < z < 1.3 and measured the evolution of their ellipticity distributions. Our sample contains 487 galaxies in 17 z>0.3 clusters with high quality space-based imaging and a comparable sample of 210 galaxies in 10 clusters at z<0.05. We select early-type galaxies (elliptical and S0 galaxies) that fall within the cluster R_{200}, and which lie on the red-sequence in the magnitude range -19.3 > M_B > -21, after correcting for luminosity evolution. Our ellipticity measurements are made in a consistent manner over our whole sample. We pe…
We present deep B- and R-band surface photometry for a sample of 21 galaxies with morphological types between S0 and Sab. We present radial profiles of surface brightness, colour, ellipticity, position angle and deviations of axisymmetry for all galaxies, as well as isophotal and effective radii and total magnitudes. We have decomposed the images into contributions from a spheroidal bulge and a flat disk, using an interactive, 2D decomposition technique. We study in detail the relations between various bulge and disk parameters. In particular, we find that the bulges of our galaxies have surfa…
Results from the modelling of bars in nearly 300 galaxies are used to test predictions from theoretical work on the evolution of bars. Correlations are found between bar ellipticity and boxiness, between bar strength and normalised size, between the normalised sizes of bars and bulges, and between normalised bar size and bulge-to-total ratio. Bars with different ellipticities follow parallel lines in the latter two correlations. These correlations suggest that, formed with different sizes and ellipticities, bars slow down and grow longer and stronger, in agreement with theoretical work. As a c…
We have derived the photometric parameters for the structural components of a sample of fourteen SB0 galaxies by applying a parametric photometric decomposition to their observed $I$-band surface brightness distribution. We find that SB0 bulges are similar to bulges of the early-type unbarred spirals, i.e. they have nearly exponential surface brightness profiles ($<n>=1.48\pm0.16$) and their effective radii are strongly coupled to the scale lengths of their surrounding discs ($<r_e/h>=0.20\pm0.01$). The photometric analysis alone does not allow us to differentiate SB0 bulges from unbarred S0 o…
We study HST/NICMOS H-band images of bulges of two equal-sized samples of early- (T(RC3) < 4) and late-type spiral (mainly Sbc-Sc) galaxies matched in outer disk axis ratio. We find that bulges of late-type spirals are more elongated than their counterparts in early-type spirals. Using a KS-test we find that the two distributions are different at the 98.4% confidence level. We conclude that the two data sets are different, i.e. late-type galaxies have a broader ellipticity distribution and contain more elongated features in the inner regions. We discuss the possibility that these would corresp…
We use data from the BIMA Survey of Nearby Galaxies (SONG) to investigate the relationship between ellipticity and central mass concentration in barred spirals. Existing simulations predict that bar ellipticity decreases as inflowing mass driven by the bar accumulates in the central regions, ultimately destroying the bar. Using the ratio of the bulge mass to the mass within the bar radius as an estimate of the central mass concentration, we obtain dynamical mass estimates from SONG CO 1-0 rotation curve data. We find an inverse correlation between bar ellipticity and central mass concentration…
I use Spitzer 3.6-8.0 μm color profiles to compare the radial structure of star formation in pseudobulges and classical bulges. Pseudobulges are ``bulges'' which form through secular evolution, rather than mergers. In this study, pseudobulges are identified using the presence of disk-like structure in the center of the galaxy (nuclear spiral, nuclear bar, and/or high ellipticity in bulge); classical bulges are those galaxy bulges with smooth isophotes which are round compared to the outer disk, and show no disky structure in their bulge. I show that galaxies structurally identified as having p…
We present near-infrared (NIR) surface photometry of a sample of 14 early-type spirals with observed rotation curves. In this first paper, we report the results of two-dimensional parametric and non-parametric decompositions to separate the bulge and disk components; the parametric bulge is modeled with a generalized exponential law of integer index n, and the disk with a simple exponential. We find that the derived bulge parameters, for a given galaxy, vary systematically with the bulge shape index n. The mean early-type bulge has a best-fit n = 2.6, and 80% of the sample has best n of 2 or 3…
Photometry and long-slit spectroscopy are presented for 14 S0 and spiral galaxies of the Fornax, Eridanus and Pegasus cluster, and NGC 7582 group. The structural parameters of the galaxies are derived from the R-band images by performing a two-dimensional photometric decomposition of the surface-brightness distribution. This is assumed to be the sum of the contribution of a bulge and disc component characterized by elliptical and concentric isophotes with constant (but possibly different) ellipticity and position angles. The rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles are measured from th…
We investigated the globular cluster system of the S0 galaxy NGC 1380 in the Fornax cluster with deep BVR photometry. We identified two, presumably old, populations of globular clusters. The blue globular clusters seem to be counterparts to the halo globular clusters in our Milky Way. They have comparable colors and magnitudes, are spherically distributed around the elliptical galaxy but have a very flat surface density profile. The red population follows the stellar light in ellipticity and position angle, has a similar magnitude distribution to the blue clusters, and a surface density profil…
A new, 2.8 deg^2 J,H,K_s infrared survey from the 2MASS 6x program across the extent of the optical disk of the Andromeda (M31) galaxy provides a clear view of the M31 center almost completely unfettered by dust extinction, and reveals a high contrast bulge with extremely boxy isophotes dominating the NIR light to a semi-major axis of ~700''(2.6 kpc). The inner bulge (<~50'') is relatively circular, but shows some isophotal twisting. Beyond this, the ellipticity and boxiness of the bulge increase with radius -- achieving a boxiness that rivals that of any other known disk galaxy observed in th…
M32 is the prototype for the relatively rare class of galaxies referred to as `compact ellipticals'. It has been suggested that M32 may be a tidally disturbed r^(1/4) elliptical galaxy, or the remnant bulge of a disk-stripped early-type spiral galaxy. This paper reveals that the surface brightness profile, the velocity dispersion measurements, and the estimated supermassive black hole mass in M32 are inconsistent with the galaxy having, and probably ever having had, an r^(1/4) light profile. Instead, the radial surface brightness distribution of M32 resembles an almost perfect (bulge + exponen…
This work presents the structural decomposition of a sample of 11 disk galaxies, which span a range of different morphological types. The U, B, V, R, and I photometric information given in Paper I (color and color-index images and luminosity, ellipticity, and position-angle profiles) has been used to decide what types of components form the galaxies before carrying out the decomposition. We find and model such components as bulges, disks, bars, lenses and rings.
We present a study of large-scale bars in the local Universe, based on a large sample of ~3692 galaxies, with -18.5 <= M_g < -22.0 mag and redshift 0.01 <= z < 0.03, drawn from the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey. Our sample includes many galaxies that are disk-dominated and of late Hubble types. Both color cuts and Sérsic cuts yield a similar sample of ~2000 disk galaxies. We characterize bars and disks by ellipse-fitting r-band images and applying quantitative criteria. After excluding highly inclined ($>60^{\circ}$) systems, we find the following results. (1) The optical r-band fraction (f_opt-r…
We consider microlensing of an elliptical source crossing a fold caustic. We derive a simple expression for the light curve of a source with uniform surface brightness that is accurate to third order in the ellipticity e (yielding errors of <1% for e<0.3). We consider caustic crossings of a rotating star, an oblate giant extrasolar planet, and an inclined standard thin accretion disk, and find the following results. (1) If most stars have rotation periods similar to chromospherically-active (i.e. spotted) giant stars in the bulge, than ~15% should be sufficiently oblate (e>0.25) to produce det…
Recent N-body simulations have shown that the assembly history of galactic halos depend on the density of large-scale environment. It implies that the galaxy properties like age and size of bulge may also vary with the surrounding large-scale structures, which are characterized by the tidal shear as well as the density. By using a sample of 15,882 well-resolved nearby galaxies from the Tully Catalog and the real space tidal field reconstructed from the 2Mass Redshift Survey (2MRS), we investigate the dependence of galaxy morphological type on the shear of large-scale environment where the gala…
We present a non-parametric method for decomposition of the light of disk galaxies into disk, bulge and bar components. We have developed and tested the method on a sample of 68 disk galaxies for which we have acquired I-band photometry. The separation of disk and bar light relies on the single assumption that the bar is a straight feature with a different ellipticity and position angle from that of the projected disk. We here present the basic method, but recognise that it can be significantly refined. We identify bars in only 47% of the more nearly face-on galaxies in our sample. The fractio…
We present broad-band photometry and provide a quantitative analysis of the structure of galaxies in the inner region of the Abell Cluster 2443 (z~0.1). The galaxy parameters have been derived by fitting a two-component model (Sersic r^{1/n} bulge and exponential disk) to a magnitude-limited sample. Using a new method of analysis which takes into account the effects of seeing on the structural parameters and considers the ellipticity as an active parameter, we avoid systematic errors arising from assumptions of circular symmetry. 76% of the sample galaxies were classified with these models, th…

In this paper we compare the properties of three sub-systems of Galactic globular clusters, which are defined according to metallicity and HB morphology. We focus on cluster luminosities, structures, surface brightnesses (SB) and ellipticities. It is shown that the so-called "young" halo (YH) clusters, which may have been formed in external satellite galaxies, exhibit characteristics clearly distinct from those of the "old" halo (OH) and bulge/disk (BD) clusters, the majority of which are believed to be Galactic natives. The YH clusters have properties most similar to those of clusters belongi…
(ABRIDGED) Motivated by the desire to reliably and automatically classify structure of thousands of COSMOS galaxies, we present ZEST, the Zurich Estimator of Structural Types. To classify galaxy structure, ZEST uses: (i) Five non-parametric diagnostics: asymmetry, concentration, Gini coefficient, 2nd-order moment of the brightest 20% of galaxy pixels, and ellipticity; and (ii) The exponent n of single--Sersic fits to the 2D surface brightness distributions. To fully exploit the wealth of information while reducing the redundancy present in these diagnostics, ZEST performs a principal component…
