Ultra-cold RbCs molecules in high-lying vibrational levels of the a$^3Σ^+$ ground electronic state are confined in an optical trap. Inelastic collision rates of these molecules with both Rb and Cs atoms are determined for individual vibrational levels, across an order of magnitude of binding energies. A simple model for the collision process is shown to accurately reproduce the observed scattering rates.
We have realized a two-species mirror-magneto-optical trap containing a mixture of $^{87}$Rb ($^{85}$Rb) and $^{133}$Cs atoms. Using this trap, we have measured the heteronuclear collisional loss rate $β_{Rb-Cs}'$ due to intra-species cold collisions. We find a distinct difference in the magnitude and intensity dependence of $β_{Rb-Cs}'$ for the two isotopes $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb which we attribute to the different ground-state hyperfine splitting energies of the two isotopes.
We report the observation of a dimer-dimer inelastic collision resonance for ultracold Feshbach molecules made of bosonic sodium and rubidium atoms. This resonance, which we attribute to the crossing of the dimer-dimer threshold with a heteronuclear tetramer state, manifests itself as a pronounced inelastic loss peak of dimers when the interspecies scattering length between the constituent atoms is tuned. Near this resonance, a strong modification of the temperature dependence of the dimer-dimer scattering is observed. Our result provides insight into the heteronuclear four-body system consist…
We report on the production of ultracold heteronuclear YbLi* molecules in a dual-species magneto-optical trap by photoassociation (PA). The formation of the electronically excited molecules close to dissociation was observed by trap loss spectroscopy. We find 4 rovibrational states within a range of $250\,$GHz below the Yb($^1S_0$) + Li($^2P_{1/2}$) asymptote and observe isotopic PA line shifts in mixtures of $^6$Li with $^{174}$Yb, $^{172}$Yb, and $^{176}$Yb. We also describe our theoretical ab-initio calculation for the relevant electronic potentials and utilize it to analyze and identify th…
We study cold heteronuclear atom ion collisions by immersing a trapped single ion into an ultracold atomic cloud. Using ultracold atoms as reaction targets, our measurement is sensitive to elastic collisions with extremely small energy transfer. The observed energy-dependent elastic atom-ion scattering rate deviates significantly from the prediction of Langevin but is in full agreement with the quantum mechanical cross section. Additionally, we characterize inelastic collisions leading to chemical reactions at the single particle level and measure the energy-dependent reaction rate constants. …
We report heteronuclear photoassociation spectroscopy in a mixture of magneto-optically trapped 6Li and 7Li. Hyperfine resolved spectra of the vibrational level v=83 of the singlet state have been taken up to intensities of 1000 W/cm^2. Saturation of the photoassociation rate has been observed for two hyperfine transitions, which can be shown to be due to saturation of the rate coefficient near the unitarity limit. Saturation intensities on the order of 40 W/cm^2 can be determined.
Two-atom systems in small traps are of fundamental interest, first of all for understanding the role of interactions in degenerate cold gases and for the creation of quantum gates in quantum information processing with single-atom traps. One of the key quantities is the inelastic relaxation (decay) time when one of the atoms or both are in a higher hyperfine state. Here we measure this quantity in a heteronuclear system of $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb in a micro optical trap and demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the presence of both fast and slow relaxation processes, depending on the ch…
We have investigated cold ionizing heteronuclear collisions in dilute mixtures of metastable (2 3S1) 3He and 4He atoms, extending our previous work on the analogous homonuclear collisions [R. J. W. Stas et al., PRA 73, 032713 (2006)]. A simple theoretical model of such collisions enables us to calculate the heteronuclear ionization rate coefficient, for our quasi-unpolarized gas, in the absence of resonant light (T = 1.2 mK): K34(th) = 2.4*10^-10 cm^3/s. This calculation is supported by a measurement of K34 using magneto-optically trapped mixtures containing about 1*10^8 atoms of each species,…
We investigate heteronuclear collisions in isotope mixtures of laser-cooled metastable 3P2 neon. Experiments are performed with spin-polarized atoms in a magnetic trap for all two-isotope combinations of the stable neon isotopes 20Ne, 21Ne, and 22Ne. We determine the rate coefficients for heteronuclear ionizing collisions to beta_{21,20}=(3.9+/-2.7) x 10^{-11} cm^3/s, beta_{22,20}=(2.6+/-0.7) x 10^{-11} cm^3/s, and beta_{21,22}=(3.9+/-1.9) x 10^{-11} cm^3/s. We also study heteronuclear elastic collision processes and give upper bounds for heteronuclear thermal relaxation cross sections. This w…
We present the formation of homonuclear Cs2, K2, and heteronuclear CsK long-range Rydberg molecules in a dual-species magneto-optical trap for 39K and 133Cs by one-photon UV photoassociation. The different ground-state-density dependence of homo- and heteronuclear photoassociation rates and the detection of stable molecular ions resulting from auto-ionization provide an unambiguous assignment. We perform bound-bound millimeter-wave spectroscopy of long-range Rydberg molecules to access molecular states not accessible by one-photon photoassociation. Calculations based on the most recent theoret…
We investigate the formation of weakly bound, electronically excited, heteronuclear 6Li40K* molecules by single-photon photoassociation in a magneto-optical trap. We performed trap loss spectroscopy within a range of 325 GHz below the Li(2S_(1/2))+K(4P_(3/2)) and Li(2S_(1/2))+K(4P_(1/2)) asymptotic states and observed more than 60 resonances, which we identify as rovibrational levels of 7 of 8 attractive long-range molecular potentials. The long-range dispersion coefficients and rotational constants are derived. We find large molecule formation rates of up to ~3.5x10^7s^(-1), which are shown t…
We report the production of a high phase-space density mixture of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs atoms in a levitated crossed optical dipole trap as the first step towards the creation of ultracold RbCs molecules via magneto-association. We present a simple and robust experimental setup designed for the sympathetic cooling of $^{133}$Cs via interspecies elastic collisions with $^{87}$Rb. Working with the $|F=1, m_F=+1 >$ and the $|3, +3 >$ states of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs respectively, we measure a high interspecies three-body inelastic collision rate $\sim 10^{-25}-10^{-26} \rm{cm}^{6}\rm{s}^{-1}…
We report the production of ultracold heteronuclear 7Li85Rb molecules in excited electronic states by photoassociation (PA) of ultracold 7Li and 85Rb atoms. PA is performed in a dual-species 7Li-85Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) and the PA resonances are detected using trap loss spectroscopy. We identify several strong PA resonances below the Li (2s 2S1/2) + Rb (5p 2P3/2) asymptote and experimentally determine the long range C6 dispersion coefficients. We find a molecule formation rate (P_LiRb) of 3.5x10^7 s^-1 and a PA rate coefficient (K_PA) of 1.3x10^-10 cm^3/s, the highest among heteronuclea…
We study properties of two different atoms at a single optical lattice site at a heteronuclear atomic Feshbach resonance. We calculate the energy spectrum, the efficiency of rf association and the lifetime as a function of magnetic field and compare the results with the experimental data obtained for K-40 and Rb-87 [C. Ospelkaus et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 120402 (2006)]. We treat the interaction in terms of a regularized delta function pseudopotential and consider the general case of particles with different trap frequencies, where the usual approach of separating center-of-mass and relative…
We report the realization of a heteronuclear two-atom of $^{87}$Rb-$^{85}$Rb in the ground state of an optical tweezer (OT). Starting by trapping two different isotopic single atoms, a $^{87}$Rb and a $^{85}$Rb in two strongly focused and linearly polarized OT with 4 $μ$m apart, we perform simultaneously three dimensional Raman sideband cooling for both atoms and the obtained 3D ground state probabilities of $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb are 0.91(5) and 0.91(10) respectively. There is no obvious crosstalk observed during the cooling process. We then merge them into one tweezer via a species-dependen…
Examination of loading the isotopes $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb simultaneously into a shallow far-off-resonance trap (FORT) has revealed an unexpected decrease in maximum atom number loaded as compared to loading either isotope alone. The simultaneous loading of the FORT will be affected by additional homonuclear and heteronuclear light-assisted collisional losses. However, these losses are measured and found to be insufficient to explain the observed drop in total number of atoms loaded into the FORT. We find that our observations are consistent with a decrease in loading rate caused by inter-iso…
We report measurement of inelastic loss in dense and cold metastable ytterbium (Yb[$^3P_2$]). Use of an optical far-off-resonance trap enables us to trap atoms in all magnetic sublevels, removing multichannel collisional trap loss from the system. Trapped samples of Yb[$^3P_2$] are produced at a density of 2$\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-3}$ and temperature of 2 $μ$K. We observe rapid two-body trap loss of Yb[$^3P_2$] and measure the inelastic collision rate constant 1.0(3)$\times10^{-11}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$. The existence of the fine-structure changing collisions between atoms in the $^3P_2$ state is stro…
We have produced ultracold heteronuclear KRb molecules by the process of photoassociation in a two-species magneto-optical trap. Following decay of the photoassociated KRb*, the molecules are detected using two-photon ionization and time-of-flight mass spectroscopy of KRb$^+$. A portion of the metastable triplet molecules thus formed are magnetically trapped. Photoassociative spectra down to 91 cm$^{-1}$ below the K(4$s$) + Rb (5$p_{1/2}$) asymptote have been obtained. We have made assignments to all eight of the attractive Hund's case (c) KRb* potential curves in this spectral region.
We explore the quantum dynamics of heteronuclear atomic collisions in waveguides and demonstrate the existence of a novel mechanism for the resonant formation of polar molecules. The molecular formation probabilities can be tuned by changing the trap frequencies characterizing the transverse modes of the atomic species. The origin of this effect is the confinement-induced mixing of the relative and center of mass motions in the atomic collision process leading to a coupling of the diatomic continuum to center of mass excited molecular states in closed transverse channels.
We present the first observation of ultracold LiCs molecules. The molecules are formed in a two-species magneto-optical trap and detected by two-photon ionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The production rate coefficient is found to be in the range $10^{-18}\unit{cm^3s^{-1}}$ to $10^{-16}\unit{cm^3s^{-1}}$, at least an order of magnitude smaller than for other heteronuclear diatomic molecules directly formed in a magneto-optical trap.
We report the first detailed decay studies of trapped metastable (2S) hydrogen. By two-photon excitation of ultracold H samples, we have produced clouds of at least 5x10^7 magnetically trapped 2S atoms at densities greater than 4x10^10 cm^-3 and temperatures below 100 \muK. We derive experimental values for the total 2S-2S two-body loss rate constant in this temperature regime. Our results are in the range of recent theoretical calculations. We also find experimental upper limits on the rate constant for loss due to inelastic 1S-2S collisions.
We investigate collisional properties of lithium and cesium which are simultaneously confined in a combined magneto-optical trap. Trap-loss collisions between the two species are comprehensively studied. Different inelastic collision channels are identified, and inter-species rate coefficients as well as cross sections are determined. It is found that loss rates are independent of the optical excitation of Li, as a consequence of the repulsive Li$^*$-Cs interaction. Li and Cs loss by inelastic inter-species collisions can completely be attributed to processes involving optically excited cesium…
We study binary collisions of metastable calcium atoms ($^{40}$Ca) in an optical dipole trap. Collisions between $^{3}$P$_{0}$-atoms and between $^{3}$P$_{0}$ and $^{1}$S$_{0}$-atoms are considered. In the former case, the elastic and inelastic collision parameters are found to be $5.4\times 10^{-11}\,\mathrm{cm}^{3}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ and $3.6\times 10^{-11}\,\mathrm{cm}^{3}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, respectively. A fraction of the collisions between $^{3}$P$_{0}$-atoms is found to produce cold trapped atoms in the singlet $^{1}$S$_{0}$ state, suggesting that the internal energy for these collisions is d…
We calculate the cross sections for elastic scattering and Zeeman relaxation in binary collisions of molecules in the ro-vibrational ground state of a $^2Σ$ electronic state and the Zeeman state with the electron spin projection $M_S=1/2$ on the magnetic field axis. This is the lowest-energy state of $^2Σ$ molecules confined in a magnetic trap. The results are averaged over calculations with multiple molecule - molecule interaction potentials, which yields the expectation intervals for the cross sections and the elastic-to-inelastic cross section ratios. We find that the elastic-to-inelastic c…
We present a formalism for rigorous calculations of cross sections for inelastic and reactive collisions of ultracold atoms and molecules confined by laser fields in quasi-2D geometry. Our results show that the elastic-to-inelastic ratios of collision cross sections are enhanced in the presence of a laser confinement and that the threshold energy dependence of the collision cross sections can be tuned by varying the confinement strength and external magnetic fields. The enhancement of the elastic-to-inelastic ratios is inversely proportional to $\sqrt{ε/\hbar ω_0}$, where $ε$ is the kinetic en…
We consider how trapped molecules can be sympathetically cooled by ultracold atoms. As a prototypical system, we study LiH molecules co-trapped with ultracold Li atoms. We calculate the elastic and inelastic collision cross sections of LiH + Li with the molecules initially in the ground state and in the first rotationally excited state. We then use these cross sections to simulate sympathetic cooling in a static electric trap, an ac electric trap, and a microwave trap. In the static trap we find that inelastic losses are too great for cooling to be feasible for this system. The ac and microwav…
We calculate the rates of inelastic collisions for ultracold alkali-metal atoms in radiofrequency-dressed traps, using coupled-channel scattering calculations on accurate potential energy surfaces. We identify an rf-induced loss mechanism that does not exist in the absence of rf radiation. This mechanism is not suppressed by a centrifugal barrier in the outgoing channel, and can be much faster than spin relaxation, which is centrifugally suppressed. We explore the dependence of the rf-induced loss rate on singlet and triplet scattering lengths, hyperfine splittings and the strength of the rf f…
We present a theoretical study of rotationally elastic and inelastic collisions between molecular nitrogen ions and Rb atoms in the sub-Kelvin temperature regime prevalent in ion-atom hybrid trapping experiments. The cross sections for rotational excitation and de-excitation collisions were calculated using quantum-scattering methods on ab-initio potential energy surfaces for the energetically lowest singlet electronic channel of the system. We find that the rotationally inelastic collision rates are at least an order of magnitude smaller than the charge-exchange rates found in this system, re…
It has recently become possible to form molecules in ultracold gases of trapped alkali metal atoms. Once formed, the molecules may undergo elastic, inelastic and reactive collisions. Inelastic and reactive collisions are particularly important because they release kinetic energy and eject atoms and molecules from the trap. The theory needed to handle such collisions is presented and recent quantum dynamics calculations on ultracold atom-diatom collisions of spin-polarised Li + Li_2, Na + Na_2 and K + K_2 are described. All these systems have potential energy surfaces on which barrierless atom …
Cold inelastic collisions between confined cesium (Cs) atoms and Cs$\_2$ molecules are investigated inside a CO$\_2$ laser dipole trap. Inelastic atom-molecule collisions can be observed and measured with a rate coefficient of $\sim 2.5 \times 10^{-11} $cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$, mainly independent of the molecular ro-vibrational state populated. Lifetimes of purely atomic and molecular samples are essentially limited by rest gas collisions. The pure molecular trap lifetime ranges 0,3-1 s, four times smaller than the atomic one, as is also observed in a pure magnetic trap. We give an estimation of the i…
We have studied the fundamental rotational relaxation and excitation collision of OH- J=0 <-> 1 with helium at different collision energies. Using state-selected photodetachment in a cryogenic ion trap, the collisional excitation of the first excited rotational state of OH- has been investigated and absolute inelastic collision rate coefficients have been extracted for collision temperatures between 20 and 35 K. The rates are compared with accurate quantum scattering calculations for three different potential energy surfaces. Good agreement is found within the experimental accuracy, but the ex…
We report the production of ultracold 7Li85Rb molecules by photoassociation (PA) below the Li (2s 2S1/2) + Rb (5p 2P1/2) asymptote. We perform PA spectroscopy in a dual-species 7Li-85Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) and detect the PA resonances using trap loss spectroscopy. We observe several strong PA resonances corresponding to the last few bound states, assign the lines and derive the long range C6 dispersion coefficients for the Li (2s 2S1/2) + Rb (5p 2P1/2) asymptote. We also report an excited-state molecule formation rate (P_LiRb) of ~10^7 s^-1 and a PA rate coefficient (K_PA) of ~4x10^-11 …
Interactions between cold ions and atoms have been proposed for use in implementing quantum gates\cite{Idziaszek2007}, probing quantum gases\cite{Sherkunov2009}, observing novel charge-transport dynamics\cite{Cote2000}, and sympathetically cooling atomic and molecular systems which cannot be laser cooled\cite{Smith2005,Hudson2009}. Furthermore, the chemistry between cold ions and atoms is foundational to issues in modern astrophysics, including the formation of stars, planets, and interstellar clouds\cite{Smith1992}, the diffuse interstellar bands\cite{Reddy2010}, and the post-recombination ep…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of atom-molecule collisions in a mixture of cold, trapped atomic nitrogen and NH molecules at a temperature of $\sim 600$~mK. We measure a small N+NH trap loss rate coefficient of $k^{(\mathrm{N+NH})}_\mathrm{loss} = 8(4) \times 10^{-13}$~cm$^{3}$s$^{-1}$. Accurate quantum scattering calculations based on {\it ab initio} interaction potentials are in agreement with experiment and indicate the magnetic dipole interaction to be the dominant loss mechanism. Our theory further indicates the ratio of N+NH elastic to inelastic collisions remains large…
The collisional stability of ultracold polar molecules in electrostatic traps is considered. Rate constants for collisions that drive molecules from weak-field-seeking to strong-field-seeking states are estimated using a simple model. The rates are found to be quite large, of order 10^{-12} - 10^{-10} cm^3/sec, and moreover to grow rapidly in an externally applied electric field. It is argued that these results are generic for polar molecules, and that therefore polar molecules should be trapped by other than electrostatic means.
We report on the observation and characterisation of an inelastic loss feature in collisions between ultracold Rb-85 |F=2, m_F=-2> atoms at a magnetic field of 220 G. Our apparatus creates ultracold Rb-85 clouds by sympathetic cooling with a Rb-87 reservoir, and can produce pure Rb-87 condensates of 10^6 atoms by a combination of evaporative cooling in a quadrupole-Ioffe magnetic trap and further evaporation in a weak, large-volume optical dipole trap. By combining Rb-85 and Rb-87 atoms collected in a dual-species magneto-optical trap and selectively evaporating the heavier isotope, we demonst…
We have studied the effects of loading $^{87}$Rb into a far off resonant trap (FORT) in the presence of an ultracold cloud of $^{85}$Rb. The presence of the $^{85}$Rb resulted in a marked decrease of the $^{87}$Rb load rate. This decrease is consistent with a decrease in the laser cooling efficiency needed for effective loading. While many dynamics which disrupt loading efficency arise when cooling in a dense cloud of atoms (reabsorption, adverse optical pumping, etc.), the large detuning between the transitions of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb should isolate the isotopes from these effects. For our…
We present a formalism for rigorous calculations of cross sections for inelastic and reactive collisions of ultracold atoms and molecules confined by laser fields in quasi-2D geometry.
We prepare mixtures of ultracold CaF molecules and Rb atoms in a magnetic trap and study their inelastic collisions. When the atoms are prepared in the spin-stretched state and the molecules in the spin-stretched component of the first rotationally excited state, they collide inelastically with a rate coefficient of $k_2 = (6.6 \pm 1.5) \times 10^{-11}$ cm$^{3}$/s at temperatures near 100~$μ$K. We attribute this to rotation-changing collisions. When the molecules are in the ground rotational state we see no inelastic loss and set an upper bound on the spin relaxation rate coefficient of $k_2 <…
We employ an accurate, ab initio potential energy surface (PES) which describes the electronic interaction energy between the molecular anion OH$^-$ ($^1Σ^+$) and the neutral rubidium atom Rb ($^2S$), to evaluate the elastic and inelastic cross sections over a range of energies representative of the conditions of low-T experiments in MOT traps, when combined with laser-cooled rubidium gas. The system is considered to be in its vibrational ground state, while the first four rotational levels are taken to be involved in the cooling and heating collisional processes that are computed here. The co…
We report the production of ultracold heteronuclear Cs$^*$Yb molecules through one-photon photoassociation applied to an ultracold atomic mixture of Cs and Yb confined in an optical dipole trap. We use trap-loss spectroscopy to detect molecular states below the Cs($^{2}P_{1/2}$) + Yb($^{1}S_{0}$) asymptote. For $^{133}$Cs$^{174}$Yb, we observe 13 rovibrational states with binding energies up to $\sim$500 GHz. For each rovibrational state we observe two resonances associated with the Cs hyperfine structure and show that the hyperfine splitting in the diatomic molecule decreases for more deeply …
We have trapped cesium atoms over many minutes in the focus of a CO$_2$-laser beam employing an extremely simple laser system. Collisional properties of the unpolarized atoms in their electronic ground state are investigated. Inelastic binary collisions changing the hyperfine state lead to trap loss which is quantitatively analyzed. Elastic collisions result in evaporative cooling of the trapped gas from 25 $μ$K to 10 $μ$K over a time scale of about 150 s.
We describe a model of inelastic and elastic collisional dynamics of atoms in an optical dipole trap that utilizes numerical evaluation of statistical mechanical quantities and numerical solution of equations for the evolution of number and temperature of trapped atoms. It can be used for traps that possess little spatial symmetry and when the ratio of trap depth to sample temperature is relatively small. We compare simulation results with experiments on $^{88}$Sr and $^{84}$Sr, which have well-characterized collisional properties.
Cold, neutral hydroxyl radicals are Stark decelerated and confined within a magnetic trap consisting of two permanent ring magnets. The OH molecules are trapped in the ro-vibrational ground state at a density of $\sim10^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$ and temperature of 70 mK. Collisions between the trapped OH sample and supersonic beams of atomic He and molecular D$_{2}$ are observed and absolute collision cross sections measured. The He--OH and D$_{2}$--OH center-of-mass collision energies are tuned from 60 cm$^{-1}$ to 230 cm$^{-1}$ and 145 cm$^{-1}$ to 510 cm$^{-1}$, respectively, yielding evidence of redu…
We report measurement of the inelastic and elastic collision rates for ^{88}Sr atoms in the (5s5p)^3P_0 state in a crossed-beam optical dipole trap. This is the first measurement of ultracold collision properties of a ^3P_0 level in an alkaline-earth atom or atom with similar electronic structure. Since the (5s5p)^3P_0 state is the lowest level of the triplet manifold, large loss rates indicate the importance of principle-quantum-number-changing collisions at short range. We also provide an estimate of the collisional loss rates for the (5s5p){^3P_2} state.
We report on trapping of fermionic 40K atoms in a red-detuned standing-wave optical trap, loaded from a magneto-optical trap. Typically, 10^6 atoms are loaded at a density of 10^12 cm^-3 and a temperature of 65 microK, and trapped for more than 1 s. The optical trap appears to be the proper environment for performing collisional measurements on the cold atomic sample. In particular we measure the elastic collisional rate by detecting the rethermalization following an intentional parametric heating of the atomic sample. We also measure the inelastic two-body collisional rates for unpolarized at…
We report on experiments investigating the collisional properties of atoms at ultralow collision energies using an all-optical atom collider. By using a pair of optical tweezers, we can manipulate two ultracold atom clouds and collide them together at energies up to three orders of magnitude larger than their thermal energy. Our experiments measure the scattering of $\rm ^{87}Rb$, $\rm ^{40}K$, and $\rm ^{40}K$-$\rm ^{87}Rb$ collisions. The versatility of our collider allows us to probe both shape resonances and Feshbach resonances in any partial wave. As examples, we present experiments demon…
Trapping of atoms and molecules in electrostatic, magnetic and optical traps has enabled studying atomic and molecular interactions on a timescale of many seconds, allowing observations of ultra-cold collisions and reactions. Here we report the first magnetic deceleration and trapping of neutral carbon atoms in a static magnetic trap. When co-trapping the carbon atoms with oxygen molecules in a superconducting trap, the carbon signal decays in a non-exponential manner, consistent with losses resulting from atom-molecule collisions. Our findings pave the way to studying both elastic and inelast…
We have carried out bound-state and low-energy quantum scattering calculations on He + NH (triplet Sigma) in magnetic fields, with the NH molecule in its n=1 rotationally excited states. We have explored the pattern of levels as a function of magnetic field and identified the nearly good quantum numbers in different regimes. We have used the bound-state calculations to locate low-energy Feshbach resonances. When the magnetic field is used to tune across such a resonance, the real and imaginary part of the scattering length show asymmetric oscillations and peaks with amplitude between 1 and 3 A…
Collisions between cold molecules are essential for studying fundamental aspects of quantum chemistry, and may enable formation of quantum degenerate molecular matter by evaporative cooling. However, collisions between trapped, naturally occurring molecules have so far eluded direct observation due to the low collision rates of dilute samples. We report the first directly observed collisions between cold, trapped molecules, achieved without the need of laser cooling. We magnetically capture molecular oxygen in a 0.8K x kB deep superconducting trap, and set bounds on the ratio between the elast…
Reaching high densities is a key step towards cold-collision experiments with polyatomic molecules. We use a cryofuge to load up to 2$\times10^7$ CH$_3$F molecules into a box-like electric trap, achieving densities up to 10$^7$/cm$^3$ at temperatures around 350 mK where the elastic dipolar cross-section exceeds 7$\times$10$^{-12}$cm$^2$. We measure inelastic rate constants below 4$\times$10$^{-8}$cm$^3$/s and control these by tuning a homogeneous electric field that covers a large fraction of the trap volume. Comparison to ab-initio calculations gives excellent agreement with dipolar relaxatio…
We present an experimental study on the rotational inelastic scattering of OH ($X^2Π_{3/2}, J=3/2, f$) radicals with He and D$_2$ at collision energies between 100 and 500 cm$^{-1}$ in a crossed beam experiment. The OH radicals are state selected and velocity tuned using a Stark decelerator. Relative parity-resolved state-to-state inelastic scattering cross sections are accurately determined. These experiments complement recent low-energy collision studies between trapped OH radicals and beams of He and D$_2$ that are sensitive to the total (elastic and inelastic) cross sections (Sawyer \emph{…
We present the first simultaneous trapping of two different ultracold atomic species in a conservative trap. Lithium and cesium atoms are stored in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a CO$_2$ laser. Techniques for loading both species of atoms are discussed and observations of elastic and inelastic collisions between the two species are presented. A model for sympathetic cooling of two species with strongly different mass in the presence of slow evaporation is developed. From the observed Cs-induced evaporation of Li atoms we estimate a cross section for cold elastic Li-Cs collision…
Utilizing single-photon photoassociation, we have achieved ultracold rubidium molecules with a high number density that provides a new efficient approach toward molecular quantum degeneracy. A new detection mechanism for ultracold molecule utilizing the inelastic atom-molecule collision is demonstrated. The resonant coupling effect on the formation of the ${\rm X^1Σ^+_g}$ ground state ${\rm ^{85}Rb_2}$ allows for a sufficient number of more deeply bound ultracold molecules, which induced an additional trap loss and heating of the co-existing atoms owing to the inelastic atom-molecule collision…
We report on cooling of an atomic cesium gas closely above an evanescent-wave atom mirror. At high densitities, optical cooling based on inelastic reflections is found to be limited by a density-dependent excess temperature and trap loss due to ultracold collisions involving repulsive molecular states. Nevertheless, very good starting conditions for subsequent evaporative cooling are obtained. Our first evaporation experiments show a temperature reduction from 10muK down to 300nK along with a gain in phase-space density of almost two orders of magnitude.
We experimentally and theoretically study the continuous accumulation of cold atoms from a magneto-optical trap (MOT) into a finite depth trap, consisting in a magnetic quadrupole trap dressed by a radiofrequency (RF) field. Chromium atoms (52 isotope) in a MOT are continuously optically pumped by the MOT lasers to metastable dark states. In presence of a RF field, the temperature of the metastable atoms that remain magnetically trapped can be as low as 25 microK, with a density of 10^17 atoms.m-3, resulting in an increase of the phase-space density, still limited to 7.10^-6 by inelastic colli…
We use an all-optical trap to confine a strongly attractive two-state mixture of lithium fermions. By measuring the rate of evaporation from the trap, we determine the effective elastic scattering cross section (4 PI a^2) to show that the magnitude of the scattering length |a| is very large, in agreement with predictions. We show that the mixture is stable against inelastic decay provided that a small bias magnetic field is applied. For this system, the s-wave interaction is widely tunable at low magnetic field, and can be turned on and off rapidly via a Raman PI pulse. Hence, this mixture is …
We are developing a new hybrid atom-ion trap to study the interaction of ultracold rubidium atoms with mass-selected OH- molecules. The ions are trapped inside an octupole rf-trap made of thin wires instead of the commonly used rods. This ensures good optical access to the center of the trap where the ions can be overlapped with laser cooled rubidium atoms stored in a dark spontaneous force optical trap (dark SPOT). This setup provides high collision rates since the density in a dark SPOT is about one order of magnitude higher than in a standard magneto-optical trap. Further, inelastic collisi…
We present a multichannel scattering calculation of elastic and inelastic cold collisions between two low-field seeking, metastable ^{88}Sr [(5s5p) ^3P_2] atoms in the presence of an external magnetic field. The scattering physics is governed by strong anisotropic long-range interactions, which lead to pronounced coupling among the partial waves of relative motion. As a result, nonadiabatic transitions are shown to trigger a high rate of inelastic losses. At relatively high energies, T > 100 mkK, the total inelastic collision rate is comparable with the elastic rate. However, at lower collisio…
We discuss the possibility of trapping polar molecules in the standing-wave electromagnetic field of a microwave resonant cavity. Such a trap has several novel features that make it very attractive for the development of ultracold molecule sources. Using commonly available technologies, microwave traps can be built with large depth (up to several Kelvin) and acceptance volume (up to several cm^3), suitable for efficient loading with currently available sources of cold polar molecules. Unlike most previous traps for molecules, this technology can be used to confine the strong-field seeking abso…
