We report the discovery of a new open cluster (OC) in the Galaxy at $\ell=167.0^\circ$ and $b=-1.0^\circ$. Its field includes the planetary nebula (PN) PK 167-0.1. We study the possible associations of the PN/OC pairs NGC 2818/NGC 2818A, NGC 2438/M 46 (NGC 2437), PK 6+2.5/NGC 6469, as well as of the PN PK 167-0.1 with New Cluster 1. The analyses are based on near-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and stellar radial density profiles (RDPs). NGC 6469 is located in a heavily contaminated bulge field. The CMD morphology, especially for the latter two cases, is defined with a field star decontamination algorithm applied to the 2MASS \jj, \hh, and \ks photometry. Field decontamination for the OCs NGC 2818A and M 46 produced better defined CMDs and more accurate cluster parameters than in the literature. Those pieces of evidence point to M 46 as physically associated with the PN NGC 2438. The same occurs for the OC NGC 2818A and the PN NGC 2818, however previous radial velocity arguments indicate that they are not associated. The OC NGC 6469 does not appear to be associated with the PN PK 6+2.5, which probably belongs to the bulge. Finally, the distance of the OC New Cluster 1 is consistent with a physical association with the PN PK 167-0.1.
In a recent work Ciardullo et al. (1999) list 19 planetary nebulae surveyed by the Hubble Space Telescope for the presence of resolved visual binary companions of their central stars. For ten planetary nebulae they argue for probable physical association of the resolved stars with the central stars, while for nine the association is less likely. Such stellar companions, at orbital separations of hundreds to thousands of astronomical units, will cause the structures of these planetary nebulae to possess a non-axisymmetrical signatures. By using images from the literature of these 19 planetary n…
21cm spectral-line and continuum observations of ten compact planetary nebulae have been made with the Very Large Array. Circumnebular atomic hydrogen is identified in the planetary nebulae SwSt1, M3-35, and possibly in Hu2-1. The possibility of an inverse correlation between the optical depth of circumnebular atomic hydrogen and the linear radius of the ionised nebula is investigated, but not shown to be statistically significant. Observations of J=2-1CO emission for 22 planetary nebulae and J=3-2CO emission for 16 planetary nebulae taken with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope are presented. …
Nebulae around symbiotic Miras look very much like genuine planetary nebulae, although they are formed in a slightly different way. We present near infrared photometry of known and suspected symbiotic nebulae obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Southern Sky Survey (DENIS). We demonstrate that the near infrared colours are an excellent tool to distinguish symbiotic from genuine planetary nebulae. In particular we find that the bipolar planetary nebulae M 2-9 and Mz 3 are in fact symbiotic Miras. Further observations on prototype symbiotic Miras prove that the proposed classification scheme wor…
We report results from a program of high-resolution spectral mapping of rotational H_2 emission from bipolar planetary and pre-planetary nebulae. Long-slit spectra obtained with the NOAO Phoenix near-infrared spectrometer allow us to probe the molecular kinematics of these nebulae at moderate spatial resolution. We find strong evidence of a component of rotation in the equatorial H_2 emission from the Egg nebula (RAFGL 2688). In this nebula and in the pre-planetary nebula RAFGL 618, the H_2 kinematics point to the recent emergence of high-velocity polar flows, which likely mark the fairly sudd…
This paper reports the results of the numerical study of the formation of aspherical Planetary Nebulae through the Generalised Interacting Winds Model, taking into account the effects caused by the evolving central star and fast wind. The results show for the first time that aspherical nebulae do form within the required time scale. Consideration of the development of the nebula shows that in the early stages it is the ionization of the aspherical AGB wind that contributes considerably to the shaping of the nebula. Furthermore the passing through of the ionization front may modifies the densit…
This review contains: (1) the scientific motivations for studying Planetary Nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds; (2) a review of this field of study, from the origins to the most recent results, focusing on the papers that have been published since the last IAU Symposium on Planetary Nebulae; (3) a review of the Hubble contribution to the field, from the early results to our own Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebula program.
The young planetary nebulae play an important role in stellar evolution when intermediate- to low-mass stars (0.8 $\sim$ 8 M$_\odot$) evolve from the proto-planetary nebulae phase to the planetary nebulae phase. Many young planetary nebulae display distinct bipolar structures as they evolve away from the proto-planetary nebulae phase. One possible cause of their bipolarity could be due to a binary origin of its energy source. Here we report our detailed investigation of the young planetary nebula, Hubble 12, which is well-known for its extended hourglass-like envelope. We present evidence with…
We consider the possibility of cluster membership for 13 planetary nebulae that are located in close proximity to open clusters lying in their lines of sight. The short lifetimes and low sample size of intermediate-mass planetary nebulae with respect to nearby open clusters conspire to reduce the probability of observing a true association. Not surprisingly, line of sight coincidences almost certainly exist for 7 of the 13 cases considered. Additional studies are advocated, however, for 6 planetary nebula/open cluster coincidences in which a physical association is not excluded by the availabl…
We report the results from an optical imaging survey of proto-planetary nebula candidates using the HST. We exploited the high resolving power and wide dynamic range of HST and detected nebulosities in 21 of 27 sources. All detected reflection nebulosities show elongation, and the nebula morphology bifurcates depending on the degree of the central star obscuration. The Star-Obvious Low-level-Elongated (SOLE) nebulae show a bright central star embedded in a faint, extended nebulosity, whereas the DUst-Prominent Longitudinally-EXtended (DUPLEX) nebulae have remarkable bipolar structure with a co…
We present high quality radio continuum observations made with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3.6 cm at two epochs toward the planetary nebula M2-43. The comparison of the two epochs, obtained with a time separation of 4.07 years, clearly shows the expansion of the planetary nebula with an angular rate of 0.61 +/- 0.09 mas/year.Assuming that the expansion velocity in the plane of the sky (determined from these measurements) and the expansion velocity in the line of sight (determined from optical spectroscopy available in the literature) are equal, we find a distance to the planetary nebula of 6…
The final expulsion of gas by a star as it forms a planetary nebula --- the ionized shell of gas often observed surrounding a young white dwarf --- is one of the most poorly understood stages of stellar evolution. Such nebulae form extremely rapidly (about 100 years for the ionization) and so the formation process is inherently difficult to observe. Particularly puzzling is how a spherical star can produce a highly asymmetric nebula with collimated outflows. Here we report optical observations of the Stingray Nebula which has become an ionized planetary nebula within the past few decades. We f…
We have observed planetary nebulae (PNe) in several early-type galaxies using new techniques on 4- to 8-meter-class telescopes. We obtain the first large data sets (~ 100 velocities each) of PN kinematics in galaxies at > 15 Mpc, and present some preliminary dynamical results.
We surveyed a 50 sq arcmin region in the Virgo cluster core to search for intergalactic planetary nebulae, and found 11 candidates in the surveyed area. The measured fluxes of these unresolved sources are consistent with these objects being planetary nebulae from an intracluster population of stars. We compute the cumulative luminosity function of these 11 planetary nebula candidates. If we assume that they belong to the Virgo cluster, their cumulative luminosity function is in good agreement with planetary nebula luminosity function simulations. This comparison allows us to estimate the surfa…
We briefly describe the properties of the confirmed spectroscopic sample of intracluster planetary nebulae recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. We find 23 bonafide intracluster planetary nebulae and 8 high redshift (z ~ 3.1) Lyalpha emitters identified by their broad asymmetric emission line.
We examine the possibility of detecting signatures of surviving Uranus-Neptune-like planets inside planetary nebulae. Planets that are not too close to the stars, orbital separation larger than about 5 AU, are likely to survive the entire evolution of the star. As the star turns into a planetary nebula, it has a fast wind and a strong ionizing radiation. The interaction of the radiation and wind with a planet may lead to the formation of a compact condensation or tail inside the planetary nebula, which emits strongly in Halpha, but not in [OIII]. The position of the condensation (or tail) will…
We report the detection of an Halpha emission-line structure in the upstream side of the planetary nebula NGC 40, which is predicted by numerical simulations, and which is attributed to Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Such a Rayleigh-Taylor instability is expected to occur at early stages of the interaction process between the interstellar medium (ISM) and a fast moving planetary nebula, as is the case for NGC 40. We resolved the Rayleigh-Taylor instability `tongues', as well as the flatness of the nebula around the `tongues', which results from the deceleration by the ISM.
We report results of a spectrophotometric study of SBS 1150+599A and discuss the nature of this object based upon our data. Our study shows that SBS 1150+599A is most probably a planetary nebula located in the Galactic halo and not a cataclysmic variable as originally proposed by the authors of the Second Byurakan Survey from low resolution spectroscopy. We have further elaborated on the properties of SBS 1150+599A (now becoming PN G135.9+55.9) with tools used for planetary nebula analysis. Our photoionization models show that, in order to match the observational constraints, the oxygen abunda…
I propose that some of the most luminous planetary nebulae (PNs) are actually proto-PNs, where a companion white dwarf (WD) accretes mass at a relatively high rate from the post-asymptotic giant branch star that blew the nebula. The WD sustains a continuous nuclear burning and ionizes the nebula. The WD is luminous enough to make the dense nebula luminous in the [O III]5007 line, In young stellar populations these WD accreting systems account for a small fraction of [O III]-luminous PNs, but in old stellar populations these binaries might account for most, or even all, of the [OIII]-luminous P…
Context: Magnetic fields are thought to be one of the possible mechanisms responsible for shaping the generally spherical outflow of evolved stars into often aspherical planetary nebulae. However, direct measurements of magnetic fields during the transition to the planetary nebula phase are rare. Aims: The aim of this project is to expand the number of magnetic field measurements of stars in the (proto-)planetary nebula phase and find if the magnetic field strength is sufficient to affect the stellar outflow. Methods: We used Very Long Baseline Array observations to measure the circular polari…
We present a catalogue of positions, magnitudes and velocities for 3300 emission-line objects found by the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph in a survey of the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. Of these objects, 2615 are found likely to be planetary nebulae (PNe) associated with M31. Initial results from this survey include: the likely non-existence of Andromeda VIII; a universal PN luminosity function, with the exception of a small amount of obscuration, and a small offset in normalization between bulge and disk components; very faint kinematically-selected photometry implying no cut-off in the disk to beyo…
We report here the successful commissioning of the PN.Spectrograph, the first special-purpose instrument for the measurement of galaxy kinematics through the PN population
We examine two scenarios for formation of the planetary nebula K648: a prompt scenario where the planetary nebula is ejected and formed immediately after a helium shell flash and a delayed scenario where a third dredge up occurs and the envelope is ejected during the following interpulse phase. We present models of both scenarios and find that each can produce K648-like systems. We suggest that the prompt scenario is more favorable but cannot rule out the delayed scenario.
We report the initial results of a survey for intracluster planetary nebulae in the Virgo Cluster. In two 16' x 16' fields, we identify 69 and 16 intracluster planetary nebula candidates, respectively. In a third 16' x 16' field near the central elliptical galaxy M87, we detect 75 planetary nebula candidates, of which a substantial fraction are intracluster in nature. By examining the number of the planetaries detected in each field and the shape of the planetary nebula luminosity function, we show that 1) the intracluster starlight of Virgo is distributed non-uniformly, and varies between sub…
We draw attention to the extreme filamentary structures seen in high-resolution optical images of certain planetary nebulae. We determine the physical properties of the filaments in the nebulae IC 418, NGC 3132, and NGC 6537, and based on their large length-to-width ratios, longitudinal coherence, and morphology, we suggest that they may be signatures of the underlying magnetic field. The fields needed for the coherence of the filaments are probably consistent with those measured in the precursor circumstellar envelopes. The filaments suggest that magnetic fields in planetary nebulae may have …
For the planetary nebula NGC 7009, we present a comparison of two unpublished Very Large Array archive data sets taken with a time separation of 8.09 years to confirm the proper motions of its ansae observed in the optical. We determine values of 23$\pm$6 and 34$\pm$10 mas yr$^{-1}$ for the eastern and western ansae, respectively. There is marginal evidence suggesting that the flux densities of the jets that connect the ansae with the main body of the nebula diminished in about 30% over the period between the two observations. We also set an upper limit to the expansion of the main body of the…
We confirmed the presence of regular UBVRIc light variations of the object in the centre of planetary nebula Sh 2-71, the improved period of them being P =(68.132+/-0.005) days. The shapes and amplitudes of light curves in particular colours are briefly discussed.
Planetary nebulae are now well established as probes of galaxy dynamics and as standard candles in distance determinations. Motivated by the need to improve the efficiency of planetary nebulae searches and the speed with which their radial velocities are determined, a dedicated instrument - the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph or PN.S - has been designed and commissioned at the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. The high optical efficiency of the spectrograph results in the detection of typically ~ 150 PN in galaxies at the distance of the Virgo cluster in one night of observations. In the same ob…
I derive constraints on jet properties for inflating pairs of bubbles in planetary nebulae and clusters of galaxies. This work is motivated by the similarity in morphology and some non-dimensional quantities between X-ray-deficient bubbles in clusters of galaxies and the optical-deficient bubbles in planetary nebulae, which was pointed out in an earlier work. In the present paper I find that for inflating fat bubbles, the opening angle of the jets must be large, i.e., the half opening angle measured from the symemtry axis of the jets should typically be larger than 40 degrees. Narrow jets will…
Magnetic fields are an important but largely unknown ingredient of planetary nebulae. They have been detected in oxygen-rich AGB and post-AGB stars, and may play a role in the shaping of their nebulae. Here we present SCUBA sub-millimeter polarimetric observations of four bipolar planetary nebulae and post-AGB stars, including two oxygen-rich and two carbon-rich nebulae, to determine the geometry of the magnetic field by dust alignment. Three of the four sources (NGC 7027, NGC 6537 and NGC 6302) present a well-defined toroidal magnetic field oriented along their equatorial torus or disk. NGC 6…
The planetary nebula populations of relatively nearby galaxies can be easily observed and provide both a distance estimate and a tool with which dynamical information can be obtained. Usually the requisite radial velocities are obtained by multi-object spectroscopy once the planetary nebulae have been located by direct imaging. Here we report on a technique for measuring planetary nebula kinematics using the double-beam ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope in a novel slitless mode, which enables the detection and radial velocity measurements to be combined into a single step. Th…
I present the results of time-resolved photometry of a selection of central stars of planetary nebulae. The study reveals periodic variability in two of the eight central stars observed, those of NGC 6026 and NGC 6337. The variability matches that expected from a binary system in which a hot primary irradiates a cooler secondary star.
We summarize results of our {\it HST} imaging survey of proto-planetary nebula (PPN) candidates, in which we discovered two types of axisymmetric reflection nebulosities. The Star-Obvious Low-level-Elongated (SOLE) nebulae show a bright central star embedded in a smooth, faint extended nebulosity, whereas the DUst-Prominent Longitudinally-EXtended (DUPLEX) nebulae have remarkable bipolar structure with a completely or partially obscured central star. The intrinsic axisymmetry of the PPN reflection nebulosities demonstrates that the axisymmetry often found in planetary nebulae predates the PPN …
Planetary nebula are useful kinematic tracers of the stars in all galaxy types. I review recent observationally-driven developments in the study of galaxy mass profiles. These have yielded surprising results on spiral galaxy disk masses and elliptical galaxy halo masses. A key remaining question is the coupling between PNe and the underlying stellar populations.
We have constructed photo-ionization models of five galactic bulge planetary nebulae using our automatic method which enables a fully self-consistent determination of the physical parameters of a planetary nebula. The models are constrained using the spectrum, the IRAS and radio fluxes and the angular diameter of the nebula. We also conducted a literature search for physical parameters determined with classical methods for these nebulae. Comparison of the distance independent physical parameters with published data shows that the stellar temperatures generally are in good agreement and can be …
We present a catalog of 535 planetary nebulae discovered in the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 4697, using the FORS1 Cassegrain spectrograph of the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The catalog provides positions (x, y coordinates relative to the center of light of NGC 4697, as well as RA, Dec.), and, for almost all PNs, the magnitude m(5007) and the heliocentric radial velocity in km/s.
The morphologies of planetary nebulae are believed to be self-organized configurations. These configurations are modeled by three-dimensional temporally self-similar magnetohydrodynamic solutions with radial flow, under the gravitational field of a central star of mass $M$. These solutions reproduce basic features, such as jets, point-symmetric knots, and filaments, through plasma pressure, mass density, and magnetic field lines. The time evolution function of the radial velocity starts as a slow wind and terminates as a fast wind.
As the first step to determine disk mass-to-light ratios for normal spiral galaxies, we present the results of an imaging survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) in six nearby, face-on systems: IC 342, M74 (NGC 628), M83 (NGC 5236), M94 (NGC 4736), NGC 5068, and NGC 6946. Using Blanco/Mosaic II and WIYN/OPTIC, we identify 165, 153, 241, 150, 19, and 71 PN candidates, respectively, and use the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF) to obtain distances. For M74 and NGC 5068, our distances of 8.6 +/- 0.3 Mpc and 5.4 +0.2/-0.4 Mpc are the first reliable estimates to these objects; for IC 342 (3.5 …
The radio emission from the youngest known Planetary nebula, SAO244567, has been mapped at 20,13, 6, 3.6 and 1.2 cm by using the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations constitute the first detailed radio study of this very interesting object, as they allow us to obtain, for the first time, the radio morphology of the source and to compute the radio spectrum up to 18752 MHz.
Radio continuum emission has been detected from a planetary nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud: this is the first radio continuum detection for any planetary nebula outside our galaxy. The radio flux density is a factor of two lower than predicted from the \hbeta\ flux. This could be due either to a two-component morphology or to a stellar contribution to the \hbeta\ emission. We have modeled the optical and infrared spectrum using the photo-ionisation code Cloudy: a very good fit is obtained if we assume the nebula is carbon rich. The derived diameter implies an evolutionary age of the nebu…
In this paper we describe the results of the first optical kinematic study of the planetary nebula BD+30 3639. This system has a central star of the Wolf-Rayet type and is believed to be fairly young. Emission line spectra were obtained at high spectral and spatial resolution using the Utrecht echelle spectrometer at the William Herschel Telescope. These spectra indicate that the main ionized shell of BD+30 3639 appears to be evolving in a more complex way than previously thought.
The role of planetary nebulae as probes for the galactic chemical evolution is reviewed. Their abundances throughout the Galaxy are discussed for key elements, in particular oxygen and other alpha elements. The abundance distribution derived from planetary nebulae leads to the establishment of radial abundance gradients in the galactic disk that are important constraints to model the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. The radial gradient, well determined for the solar neighborhood, is examined for distinct regions. For the galactic anticenter in particular, the observational data confirm result…
The discovery of collimated outflows associated to point-symmetric features in Planetary Nebulae has proliferated in recent years. The systematic variation of radial velocity that many of them show strongly suggests a uniform rotation or precession of the ejection direction. Although several physical processes have been invoked, the formation mechanism of precessing collimated outflows in PNe is currently an intriguing but unresolved problem.
We have obtained near-infrared imaging and an optical spectrum of the proto-planetary nebula IRAS~07131-0147, a highly polarized bipolar reflection nebula believed to be in evolutionary transition from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase. Our images reveal point reflection symmetry in the lobes - a relatively rare morphological feature. We place an upper limit on the distance of 6.5 kpc. Utilizing numerical integrations of single grain scattering models we find the nebula to lie at an inclination angle of i=20\pm5 degrees in the plane of the sky. We present a refined geom…
The planetary nebula M94--20 in the Large Magellanic Cloud was serendipitously observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Hubble Space Telescope Archival Pure Parallel Program. We present spatially resolved imaging and spectral data of the nebula and compare them with ground based data, including detection of several emission lines from the nebula and the detection of the central star. We find the total H alpha + [NII] flux = 7.3e-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 and we estimate the magnitude of the central star to be m_V = 26.0 +/- 0.2. Many oth…
We present new radial velocity measurements of 586 stars in a one-degree field centered on the open cluster M46, and the planetary nebula NGC 2438 located within a nuclear radius of the cluster. The data are based on medium-resolution optical and near-infrared spectra taken with the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We find a velocity difference of about 30 km/s between the cluster and the nebula, thus removing all ambiguities about the cluster membership of the planetary nebula caused by contradicting results in the literature. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion of th…
We report the discovery of the "21" micron and "30" micron features in the planetary nebulae around the hydrogen-deficient stars HD 826 and HD 158269. The carriers of these features are known to be produced in outflows around carbon-rich stars. This discovery demonstrates that the bulk of the dust in these nebulae has been produced during a carbon-rich phase before the atmospheres of these stars became hydrogen poor. This is the first time that the "21" micron feature has been detected in any planetary nebula. It shows that once formed its carrier can survive the formation of the nebula and th…
I derive the condition for narrow jets with varying axis, e.g., precessing jets, to inflate more or less spherical (fat) bubbles in planetary nebulae and clusters of galaxies. This work follows a previous work dealing with wide jets, i.e., having a wide opening angle. The expressions derive here are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to the conditions for inflating fat bubbles by non-precessing wide jets. This follows the similar physical cause of inflating fat bubbles, which is that the jet deposits energy inside the bubble. Fat bubbles in planetary nebulae (and similar stellar systems)…
