The morphologies of planetary nebulae are believed to be self-organized configurations. These configurations are modeled by three-dimensional temporally self-similar magnetohydrodynamic solutions with radial flow, under the gravitational field of a central star of mass $M$. These solutions reproduce basic features, such as jets, point-symmetric knots, and filaments, through plasma pressure, mass density, and magnetic field lines. The time evolution function of the radial velocity starts as a slow wind and terminates as a fast wind.
High-resolution observations provide evidence about the existence of small-amplitude transverse oscillations in solar filament fine structures. These oscillations are believed to represent fast magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and the disturbances are seen to be damped in short timescales of the order of 1 to 4 periods. In this Letter we propose that, due to the highly inhomogeneous nature of the filament plasma at the fine structure spatial scale, the phenomenon of resonant absorption is likely to operate in the temporal attenuation of fast MHD oscillations. By considering transverse inhomogen…
We draw attention to the extreme filamentary structures seen in high-resolution optical images of certain planetary nebulae. We determine the physical properties of the filaments in the nebulae IC 418, NGC 3132, and NGC 6537, and based on their large length-to-width ratios, longitudinal coherence, and morphology, we suggest that they may be signatures of the underlying magnetic field. The fields needed for the coherence of the filaments are probably consistent with those measured in the precursor circumstellar envelopes. The filaments suggest that magnetic fields in planetary nebulae may have …
The process of current filamentation in permanently externally driven, initially globally ideal plasmas is investigated by means of two-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-simulations. This situation is typical for astrophysical systems like jets, the interstellar and intergalactic medium where the dynamics is dominated by external forces. Two different cases are studied. In one case, the system is ideal permanently and dissipative processes are excluded. In the second case, a system with a current density dependent resistivity is considered. This resistivity is switched on self-consistently…
Some basic structures in planetary nebulae are modeled as self-organized magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma configurations with radial flow. These configurations are described by time self-similar dynamics, where space and time dependences of each physical variable are in separable form. Axisymmetric toroidal MHD plasma configuration is solved under the gravitational field of a central star of mass $M$. With an azimuthal magnetic field, this self-similar MHD model provides an equatorial structure in the form of an axisymmetric torus with nested and closed toroidal magnetic field lines. In the ab…
The Crab Nebula is well-described at optical wavelengths and above by a steady-state magnetohydrodynamic model due to Kennel and Coroniti (1984). Can this class of model describe other pulsar-wind nebulae? I exhibit simple generalizations of KC models, for various values of sigma, the ratio of magnetic to particle flux input at the wind shock. I calculate the evolution of the electron spectrum and synchrotron emissivity in the nebula assuming spherical symmetry, a steady state, and a purely toroidal magnetic field. Emission profiles depend on the initial magnetic field B_0, the electron spectra…
We present near-infrared spectroscopy of fluorescent molecular hydrogen (H_2) emission from molecular filaments in the reflection nebula NGC 7023. We derive the relative column densities of H_2 rotational-vibrational states from the measured line emission and compare these results with several model photodissociation regions covering a range of densities, incident UV-fields, and excitation mechanisms. Our best-fit models for one filament suggest, but do not require, either a combination of different densities, suggesting clumps of 10^6 cm^{-3} in a 10^4 - 10^5 cm^{-3} filament, or a combinatio…
The dynamical state of the solar nebula depends critically upon whether or not the gas is magnetically coupled. The presence of a subthermal field will cause laminar flow to break down into turbulence. Magnetic coupling, in turn, depends upon the ionization fraction of the gas. The inner most region of the nebula ($\lesssim 0.1$ AU) is magnetically well-coupled, as is the outermost region ($\gtrsim 10$ AU). The magnetic status of intermediate scales ($\sim 1$ AU) is less certain. It is plausible that there is a zone adjacent to the inner disk in which turbulent heating self-consistently mainta…
We use line-of-sight velocity information on the filamentary emission-line nebula of NGC 1275 to infer a dynamical model of the nebula's flow through the surrounding intracluster gas. We detect outflowing gas and flow patterns that match simulations of buoyantly rising bubbles from which we deduce that some of the nebula filaments have been drawn out of NGC 1275. We find a radial gradient of the ratio [NII]6584/H-alpha which may be due to a variation in metallicity, interactions with the surrounding intracluster medium or a hardening of the excitation mechanism. We find no preferred spatial co…
We suggest that the Orion A cloud is gravitationally collapsing on large scales, and is producing the Orion Nebula Cluster due to the focusing effects of gravity acting within a finite cloud geometry. In support of this suggestion, we show how an elliptical rotating sheet of gas with a modest density gradient along the major axis can collapse to produce a structure qualitatively resembling Orion A, with a fan-shaped structure at one end, ridges or filaments along the fan, and a narrow curved filament at the other end reminiscent of the famous integral-shaped filament. The model produces a loca…
We report on a Chandra observation of the Crab Nebula that gives the first clear view of the faint boundary of the Crab's X-ray-emitting Pulsar Wind Nebula, or PWN. There is structure in all directions. Fingers, loops, bays, and the South Pulsar Jet all indicate that either filamentary material or the magnetic field are controlling the relativistic electrons. In general, spectra soften as distance from the pulsar increases but do not change rapidly along linear features. This is particularly true for the Pulsar Jet. The termination of the Jet is abrupt; the E side is close to an [O {\small III…
Using large scale maps in C18O(2-1) and in the continuum at 1.2mm obtained at the IRAM-30m antenna with the Heterodyne Receiver Array (HERA) and MAMBO2, we investigated the morphology and the velocity field probed in the inner layers of the Horsehead nebula. The data reveal a non--self-gravitating (m/mvir = 0.3) filament of dust and gas (the "neck", diameter = 0.15-0.30 pc) connecting the Horsehead western ridge, a Photon-Dominated Region illuminated by sigmaOri, to its parental cloud L1630. Several dense cores are embedded in the ridge and the neck. One of these cores appears particularly pea…
New, very long (25'), cuts of spatially resolved profiles of the Halpha and [N II] optical emission lines have been obtained over the face of the Helix planetary nebula, NGC 7293. These directions were chosen to supplement previous similar, though shorter, cuts as well as crossing interesting phenomena in this nebular envelope. In particular one new cut crosses the extremes of the proposed CO J=2-1 emitting outer "torus" shown by Huggins and his co-workers to be nearly orthogonal to its inner counterpart. The second new cut crosses the extensive outer filamentary arcs on either side of the bri…
Recent HST observations of the Crab Nebula show filamentary structures that appear to originate from the Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) instability operating on the supernova ejecta accelerated by the pulsar-driven wind. In order to understand the origin and formation of the filaments in the Crab Nebula, we study the interaction of a pulsar wind with the uniformly expanding supernova remnant by means of numerical simulation. By performing two-dimensional numerical simulations, we find three independent instabilities in the interaction region between the pulsar wind and the expanding supernova remnant. …
We present an investigation of the spectral and spatial structure of the X-ray emission from 3C 58 based on a 350 ks observation with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This deep image, obtained as part of the Chandra Large Project program, reveals new information on nearly all spatial scales in the pulsar wind nebula (PWN). On the smallest scales we derive an improved limit of T < 1.02 X 10^6 K for blackbody emission from the entire surface of the central neutron star (NS), confirming the need for rapid, nonstandard cooling in the stellar interior. Furthermore, we show that the data are consisten…
We present new optical imagery of the X-ray bright elliptical galaxy NGC 5846, the dominant galaxy of a small group of galaxies. A dust lane with a dust mass of 7 10^3 Msun is detected in the central few kpc of NGC 5846. The morphology of the dust features are strikingly similar to that observed for the optical nebulosity AND the X-ray emission. A physical connection between the different phases of the interstellar medium therefore seems likely. We discuss three different options for the origin of the dusty nebular filaments: Condensation out of a cooling flow, mass loss of late-type stars wit…
We present molecular-line observations of 94 dark cloud cores identified in the Pipe nebula through near-IR extinction mapping. Using the Arizona Radio Observatory 12m telescope, we obtained spectra of these cores in the J=1-0 transition of C18O. We use the measured core parameters, i.e., antenna temperature, linewidth, radial velocity, radius and mass, to explore the internal kinematics of these cores as well as their radial motions through the larger molecular cloud. We find that the vast majority of the dark extinction cores are true cloud cores rather than the superposition of unrelated fi…
We present the detection of an intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence population embedded in the nebular filaments surrounding the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using HST/NICMOS. In addition to four previously known luminous Class I infrared ``protostars,'' the NICMOS data reveal 20 new sources with intrinsic infrared excess similar to Galactic pre-main sequence stars. Based on their infrared brightness, these objects can be identified as the LMC equivalent of Galactic pre-main sequence stars. The faintest LMC Young Stellar Objects in the sample have colors similar to T Ta…
The large-scale structure of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) tells us a considerable amount about their average magnetic fields, the total particle input from the pulsar winds, and the confining pressure at their outer boundaries. However, the details of the pulsar outflow, the sites of shocks and particle acceleration, the effects of instabilities in the magnetic field, and the interaction between the relativistic wind and the surrounding ejecta are contained in small-scale structures, where we observe jets and toroidal structures, time-varying emission from compact clumps, and filaments in both t…
We have examined Chandra observations of the recently discovered X-ray thread G0.13-0.11 in the Galactic center Radio Arc region. Part of the {\sl Chandra} data was studied by Yusef-Zadeh, Law, & Wardle (2002), who reported the detection of 6.4-keV line emission in this region. We find, however, that this line emission is {\sl not} associated with G0.13-0.11. The X-ray spectra of both G0.13-0.11 and the point-like source embedded are well characterized by a power law. The 2 -- 10 keV band luminosities of these two components are $\sim 3.2\times 10^{33}{\rm ergs s^{-1}}$ (G0.13-0.11) and $\sim …
Magnetohydrodynamical simulations are presented of a magnetized pulsar wind interacting directly with the interstellar medium, or, in the case of a surrounding supernova remnant, with the associated freely expanding ejecta of the progenitor star. In both cases the simulations show that the pulsar wind nebula will be elongated due to the dynamical influence of the toroidal magnetic fields, which confirm predictions from a semi-analytical model presented by Begelman & Li. The simulations follow the expansion of the pulsar wind nebula when the latter is bounded by a strong shock and show that the…
Hydrodynamical simulations played an important role in understanding the dynamics and shaping of planetary nebulae in the past century. However, hydrodynamical simulations were just a first order approach. The new millennium arrived with the generalized understanding that the effects of magnetic fields were necessary to study the dynamics of planetary nebulae. Thus, B-fields introduced a whole new number of physical possibilities for the modeling. In this paper, we review observational works done in the last 5 years and several works on magnetohydrodynamics about proto-planetary nebulae, since…
(Abridged) We present a detailed radio study of the young supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 and its associated pulsar PSR J1124-5916, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at observing wavelengths of 20, 13 and 6 cm. We find that the radio morphology of the source consists of three main components: a polarized flat-spectrum central core coincident with the pulsar J1124-5916, a surrounding circular steep-spectrum plateau with sharp outer edges and, superimposed on the plateau, a series of radial filaments with spectra significantly flatter than their surroundings. HI absorption argues fo…
The scaling properties of the second order magnetic structure function D_2^{(B)}(r) and the corresponding magnetic correlation function C_2^{(B)}(r) are derived for two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in the kinematic regime where the ratio of kinetic energy to magnetic energy is much larger than one. In this regime the magnetic flux function $ψ$ can be treated as a passive scalar advected in a two-dimensional turbulent flow. Its structure function $D_2^{(ψ)}(r)$ and the one for the magnetic field D_2^{(B)}(r) are connected by an exact relation. We calculate D_2^{(ψ)}(r) and thus D_…
