We give a gauge-independent definition of Abelian dominance in the Wilson loop operator and a constructive proof of the Abelian dominance through a non-Abelian Stokes theorem via lattice regularization. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the Abelian dominance in the Wilson loop operator in the fundamental representation. In the continuum limit, the gauge field is decomposed such that the Abelian dominance is given as an exact operator relation, leading to the exact (100%) Abelian dominance. On a lattice, we estimate the deviation from the exact Abelian dominance due to non-zero lattice spacing. In order to obtain the best Abelian dominance on a lattice by minimizing the deviation, we discuss how to decompose the gauge field variable into the dominant part and the remaining one to be decoupled on a lattice.
We show that the non-Abelian magnetic monopole defined in a gauge-invariant way in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory gives a dominant contribution to confinement of the fundamental quark, in sharp contrast to the SU(2) case.
We prove Abelian magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension of QCD. Abelian and monopole dominance in low energy physics of QCD has been confirmed for various quantities by recent Monte Carlo simulations of lattice gauge theory. In order to prove this dominance, we use the reformulation of continuum Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge as a deformation of a topological field theory of magnetic monopoles, which was proposed in the previous article by the author. This reformulation provides an efficient way for incorporating the magnetic monopole configuration as a topological n…
It has been conjectured that the Abelian projection of QCD is responsible for the confinement of color. Using a gauge independent definition of the Abelian projection which does {\it not} employ any gauge fixing, we provide a strong evidence for the Abelian dominance in Wilson loop integral. In specific we prove that the gauge potential which contributes to the Wilson loop integral is precisely the one restricted by the Abelian projection.
The Abelian dominance for the string tension was shown for the fundamental sources in MA gauge in the lattice simulations. For higher representations, however, it is also known that the naive "Abelian" Wilson loop, which is defined by using the diagonal part of the gauge field, does not reproduce the correct behavior. To solve this problem, for an arbitrary representation of an arbitrary compact gauge group, we propose to redefine the "Abelian" Wilson loop. By using this redefined operator, we demonstrate the "Abelian" dominance for sources in the adjoint representation and the sextet represen…
We show that the color $N$ dependent area law falloffs of the double-winding Wilson loop averages for the $SU(N)$ lattice gauge theory obtained in the preceding works are reproduced from the corresponding lattice Abelian gauge theory with the center gauge group $Z_N$. This result indicates the center group dominance in quark confinement.
We present a variety of numerical data supporting the Center Vortex theory of confinement. A method is introduced for identifying the location of center vortices, in thermalized gauge-field configurations generated by lattice Monte Carlo. Fluctuations in the number of such vortices, linked to fundamental representation Wilson loops, appear to be responsible for the asymptotic string tension extracted from those loops.
We study abelian dominance for confinement in terms of the local gluon properties in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge in a semi-analytical manner with the help of the lattice QCD. The global Weyl symmetry persistently remains as the relic of SU($N_c$) in the MA gauge, and provides the ambiguity on the electric and magnetic charges. We derive the criterion on the SU($N_c$)-gauge invariance in terms of the residual symmetry in the abelian gauge. In the lattice QCD, we find microscopic abelian dominance on the link variable for the whole region of $β$ in the MA gauge. The off-diagonal angle varia…
In previous works, we have proposed a new formulation of Yang-Mills theory on the lattice so that the so-called restricted field obtained from the gauge-covariant decomposition plays the dominant role in quark confinement. This framework improves the Abelian projection in the gauge-independent manner. For quarks in the fundamental representation, we have demonstrated some numerical evidences for the restricted field dominance in the string tension, which means that the string tension extracted from the restricted part of the Wilson loop reproduces the string tension extracted from the original…
We give an argument for deriving analytically the infrared ``Abelian'' dominance in a gauge invariant way for the Wilson loop average in SU(2) Yang--Mills theory. In other words, we propose a possible mechanism for realizing the dynamical Abelian projection in the SU(2) gauge-invariant manner without breaking color symmetry. This supports validity of the dual superconductivity picture for quark confinement. We also discuss the stability of the vacuum with magnetic condensation as a by-product of this result.
It is shown that the Ginsparg-Wilson relation implies an exact symmetry of the fermion action, which may be regarded as a lattice form of an infinitesimal chiral rotation. Using this result it is straightforward to construct lattice Yukawa models with unbroken flavour and chiral symmetries and no doubling of the fermion spectrum. A contradiction with the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem is avoided, because the chiral symmetry is realized in a different way than has been assumed when proving the theorem.
We derive an expression for parton scattering amplitudes of planar gauge theory in terms of sums of Wilson loops. We study in detail the example of Yang-Mills theory with an adjoint Higgs field. The expression exhibits the T-duality performed by Alday and Maldacena in the AdS dual as a Fourier transform in loop space. When combined with the AdS/CFT correspondence for Wilson loops and a strong coupling argument for the dominance of 1PI diagrams, this leads to a derivation of the Alday-Maldacena holographic prescription for scattering amplitudes in terms of momentum Wilson loops. The formula lea…
We analyze constraints from perturbative unitarity and crossing on the leading contributions of higher-dimension operators to the four-graviton amplitude in four spacetime dimensions, including constraints that follow from distinct helicity configurations. We focus on the leading-order effect due to exchange by massive degrees of freedom which makes the amplitudes of interest infrared finite. In particular, we place a bound on the coefficient of the $R^3$ operator that corrects the graviton three-point amplitude in terms of the $R^4$ coefficient. To test the constraints we obtain nontrivial ef…
The mutual information of disconnected regions in large $N$ gauge theories with holographic gravity duals can undergo phase transitions. These occur when connected and disconnected bulk Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces exchange dominance. That is, the bulk `soap bubble' snaps as the boundary regions are drawn apart. We give a gauge-theoretic characterization of this transition: States with and without a certain defect operator insertion -- the defect separates the entangled spatial regions -- are shown to be perfectly distinguishable if and only if the Ryu-Takayanagi surface is connected. Meanwhile, st…
We investigate the properties of quarks and gluons above the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c,$ using the RG improved gauge action and the Wilson quark action with two degenerate quarks mainly on a $32^3\times 16$ lattice. In the one-loop perturbation theory, the thermal ensemble is dominated by the gauge configurations with effectively $Z(3)$ center twisted boundary conditions, making the thermal expectation value of the spatial Polyakov loop take a non-trivial $Z(3)$ center. This is in agreement with our lattice simulation of high temperature QCD. We further observe that the temporal…
We outline a derivation of area law of the Wilson loop in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge. This is based on a new version of non-Abelian Stokes theorem and the novel reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory. Abelian dominance and monopole dominance of the string tension in SU(N) QCD are immediate consequences of this derivation.
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we study UV behavior of Wilson loops in various noncommutative gauge theories. We get an area law in most cases and try to identify its origin. In D3 case, we may identify the the origin as the D1 dominance over the D3: as we go to the boundary of the AdS space, the effect of the flux of the D3 charge is highly suppressed, while the flux due to the D1 charge is enhenced. So near the boundary the theory is more like a theory on D1 brane than that on D3 brane. This phenomena is closely related to the dimensional reduction due to the strong magnetic field in the c…
In this talk, first, we show that the color $N$-dependent area law falloffs of the double-winding Wilson loop averages for the $SU(N)$ lattice gauge model are reproduced from the $Z_N$ lattice Abelian gauge model due to the center group dominance in quark confinement. Next, we discuss lattice gauge-scalar models which allow analytic continuation for gauge invariant operators between confinement region and Higgs region. Applying the cluster expansion, we try to understand non-trivial contribution from scalar field in quark confinement mechanism. In order to understand quark confinement further,…
We derive a new version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop in the SU(N) case by making use of the coherent state representation on the coset space $SU(N)/U(1)^{N-1}=F_{N-1}$, the flag space. We consider the SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge in which SU(N) is broken down to $U(1)^{N-1}$. First, we show that the Abelian dominance in the string tension follows from this theorem and the Abelian-projected effective gauge theory that was derived by one of the authors. Next (but independently), combining the non-Abelian Stokes theorem with a novel reformulation o…
We disentangle the contribution of scalars to the OPE series of null polygonal Wilson loops/MHV gluon scattering amplitudes in multicolour ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. In specific, we develop a systematic computation of the $SO(6)$ matrix part of the Wilson loop by means of Young tableaux (with several examples too). Then, we use a peculiar factorisation property (when a group of rapidities becomes large) to deduce an explicit polar form. Furthermore, we emphasise the advantages of expanding the logarithm of the Wilson loop in terms of 'connected functions' as we apply this procedure to find an explicit …
To understand the Abelian dominance and magnetic monopole dominance in low-energy QCD, we rewrite the non-Abelian Wilson loop into the form which is written in terms of its Abelian components or the 't Hooft-Polyakov tensor describing the magnetic monopole. This is peformed by making use of a version of non-Abelian Stokes theorem. We propose a modified version of the maximal Abelian (MA) gauge. By adopting the modified MA gauge in QCD, we show that the off-diagonal gluons and Faddeev-Popov ghosts acquire their masses through the ghost--anti-ghost condensation due to four ghost interaction comi…
For $SU(N)$ superconformal QCD we perform a three-loop calculation of the generalized cusp anomalous dimension of the BPS Wilson loop operator using HQET formalism. We obtain an expression which is valid at generic geometric and internal angles and finite gauge group rank $N$. For equal and opposite angles this expression vanishes, proving that at these points the cusp becomes BPS. From its small angle expansion we derive the corresponding Bremsstrahlung function at three loops, matching the matrix model prediction given in terms of derivatives of the Wilson loop on the ellipsoid. Finally, we …
We derive a new version of SU(3) non-Abelian Stokes theorem by making use of the coherent state representation on the coset space $SU(3)/(U(1)\times U(1))=F_2$, the flag space. Then we outline a derivation of the area law of the Wilson loop in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge (The detailed exposition will be given in a forthcoming article). This derivation is performed by combining the non-Abelian Stokes theorem with the reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory as a perturbative deformation of a topological field theory recently proposed by one of the authors. Within this fra…
