We consider a system of repulsively interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures of spin polarized uniform atomic gases at zero temperature. We examine possible realization of p-wave superfluidity of fermions due to an effective attractive interaction via density fluctuations of Bose-Einstein condensate within mean-field approximation. We find the ground state of the system by direct energy comparison of p-wave superfluid and phase-separated states, and suggest an occurrence of the p-wave superfluid for a strong boson-fermion interaction regime. We study some signatures in the p-wave superfluid phase, such as anisotropic energy gap and quasi-particle energy in the axial state, that have not been observed in spin unpolarized superfluid of atomic fermions. We also show that a Cooper pair is a tightly bound state like a diatomic molecule in the strong boson-fermion coupling regime and suggest an observable indication of the p-wave superfluid in the real experiment.
We show that composite fermi/bose superfluids can be created in cold-atom traps by employing a Feshbach resonance or coherent photoassociation. The bosonic molecular condensate created in this way implies a new fermion pairing mechanism associated with the exchange of fermion pairs between the molecular condensate and an atomic fermion superfluid. We predict macroscopically coherent, Josephson-like oscillations of the atomic and molecular populations in response to a sudden change of the molecular energy, and suggest that these oscillations will provide an experimental signature of the pairing…
We describe pair-correlation inherent in the structure of many-particle ground state of quantum gases, namely, Bose Einstein condensate and Cooper-paired Fermi superfluid of atomic gases. We make a comparative study on the pair-correlation properties of these two systems. We discuss how to probe this pair-correlation by stimulated light scattering. This intrinsic pair-correlation may serve as a resource for many-particle entanglement.
We present a microscopic theory for superfluidity in an interacting many-particle Bose system (such as liquid $^4$He). We show that, similar to superconductivity in superconductors, superfluidity in a Bose system arises from pairing of particles of opposite momenta. We show the existence of an energy gap in single-particle excitation spectrum in the superfluid state and the existence of a specific heat jump at the superfluid transition. We derive an expression for superfluid particle density $n_s$ as a function of temperature $T$ and superfluid velocity ${\bf v}_s$. We show that superfluid-sta…
The superfluid-insulator transition of bosons is strongly modified by the presence of Fermions. Through an imaginary-time path integral approach, we derive the self-consistent mean-field transition line, and account for both the static and the dynamic screening effects of the fermions. We find that an effect akin to the fermionic orthogonality catastrophe, arising from the fermionic screening fluctuations, suppresses superfluidity. We analyze this effect for various mixture parameters and temperatures, and consider possible signatures of the orthogonality catastrophe effect in other measurable…
First, a condition for the Bose-Einstein transition in the superfluid liquid helium is presented due to the creation of a free neutron spinless pairs in a liquid helium and a dilute neutron gas mixture. We proposed a new model of dilute Bose gas, where presence atoms in the condensate is a suppressor for the collective modes as well as a creator for single-particle excitations On other hand, it is shown that the terms, of the interaction between the excitations of the Bose gas and the density modes of the neutron, meditate an attractive interaction via the neutron modes, which in turn leads to…
We show that in two-band $s$-wave superfluids it is possible to induce quantum phase transitions (QPTs) by tuning intraband and interband $s$-wave interactions, in sharp contrast to single-band $s$-wave superfluids, where only a crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) superfluidity occurs. For non-zero interband and attractive intraband interactions, we demonstrate that the ground state has always two interpenetrating superfluids possessing three spectroscopically distinct regions where pairing is qualitatively different: (I) BCS pairing in both b…
A consistent microscopic theory of pseudogap phenomena and novel Bose-liquid superconductivity (superfluidity) is presented, based on the fact that in high-$T_c$ cuprates and related systems the energy $\varepsilon_A$ of the effective attraction between fermions is comparable with their Fermi energy $\varepsilon_F$ and the bosonic Cooper pairs are formed above $T_c$ and then a part of such Cooper pairs condense into a Bose superfluid at $T_c$. High-$T_c$ cuprates and other systems with low Fermi energies ($\varepsilon_F\sim\varepsilon_A$) are bosonic superconductors/superfluids and exhibit pse…
We consider the Josephson effect when two independent Bose superfluids are weakly connected. In the presence of interparticle interaction and based on the calculations of the one-particle density matrix of the whole system, we find that the one-particle density matrix can be factorized which satisfies the general criterion of Bose superfluid proposed by Penrose and Onsager. By introducing an effective order parameter for the whole system, our researches show that there is Josephson effect for two independent Bose superfluids.
We study the transition to fermion pair superfluidity in a mixture of interacting bosonic and fermionic atoms. The fermion interaction induced by the bosons and the dynamical screening of the condensate phonons due to fermions are included using the nonperturbative Hamiltonian flow equations. We determine the bosonic spectrum near the transition towards phase separation and find that the superfluid transition temperature may be increased substantially due to phonon damping.
In this letter we show that the vortex lattice structure in the Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture can undergo a sequence of structure transitions when the Fermi superfluid is tuned from the BCS regime to the BEC regime. This is due to different vortex core structure of the Fermi superfluid in the BCS regime and in the BEC regime. In the former the vortex core is nearly filled, while the density at the vortex core gradually decreases until it empties out at the BEC regime. Therefore, with the density-density interaction between the Bose and the Fermi superfluids, the two sets of vortex lattices int…
We examine two dimensional mixture of single-component fermions and dipolar bosons. We calculate the self-enregies of the fermions in the normal state and the Cooper pair channel by including first order vertex correction to derive a modified Eliashberg equation. We predict appearance of superfluids with various non-standard pairing symmetries at experimentally feasible transition temperatures within the strong-coupling limit of the Eliashberg equation. Excitations in these superfluids are anyonic and follow non-Abelian statistics.
We present a Monte Carlo study of the Bose-glass to superfluid transition in the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Simulations are performed on the classical (3 + 1) dimensional link-current representation using the geometrical worm algorithm. Finite-size scaling analysis (on lattices as large as 16x16x16x512 sites) of the superfluid stiffness and the compressibility is consistent with a value of the dynamical critical exponent z = 3, in agreement with existing scaling and renormalization group arguments that z = d. We find also a value of $ν= 0.70(12)$ for the correlation length exponent,…
We study the phase diagram of a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate and a two-component Fermi gas. In particular, we identify the regime where the homogeneous system becomes unstable against phase separation. We show that, under proper conditions, the phase separation phenomenon can be exploited as a robust probe of Fermi superfluid.
The atomic Bose gas is studied across a Feshbach resonance, mapping out its phase diagram, and computing its thermodynamics and excitation spectra. It is shown that such a degenerate gas admits two distinct atomic and molecular superfluid phases, with the latter distinguished by the absence of atomic off-diagonal long-range order, gapped atomic excitations, and deconfined atomic pi-vortices. The properties of the molecular superfluid are explored, and it is shown that across a Feshbach resonance it undergoes a quantum Ising transition to the atomic superfluid, where both atoms and molecules ar…
We analyze the possibility of a ferroelectric transition in heteronuclear molecules consisting of Bose-Bose, Bose-Fermi or Fermi-Fermi atom pairs. This transition is characterized by the appearance of a spontaneous electric polarization below a critical temperature. We discuss the existence of a ferroelectric Fermi liquid phase for Fermi molecules and the existence of a ferroelectric superfluid phase for Bose molecules characterized by the coexistence of ferroelectric and superfluid orders. Lastly, we propose an experiment to detect ferroelectric correlations through the observation of coheren…
We develop a strong-coupling theory for the superfluidity of fermion pairing phase in a Bose-Fermi mixture. Dynamical screening, self-energy renormalization, and a pairing gap function are included self-consistently within the adiabatic limit (i.e., the phonon velocity is much smaller than the Fermi velocity). An analytical solution for the transition temperature (Tc) is derived within reasonable approximations. Using typical parameters of a 40K-87Rb mixture, we find that the calculated Tc is several times larger than that obtained in the weak coupling theory, and can be up to several percents…
Systems showing resonant superfluidity, driven by an exchange coupling of strength $g$ between uncorrelated pairs of itinerant fermions and tightly bound ones, undergo a first order phase transition as $g$ increases beyond some critical value $g_c$. The superfluid phase for $g \leq g_c$ is characterized by a gap in the fermionic single particle spectrum and an acoustic sound-wave like collective mode of the bosonic resonating fermion pairs inside this gap. For $g>g_c$ this state gives way to a phase uncorrelated bosonic liquid with a $q^2$ spectrum.
Pairing between fermions that attract each other, reveal itself to the macroscopic world in the form of superfluidity. Since the discovery of fermionic superfluidity, intense search has been going on to find various unconventional forms of fermion pairing as well as to increase the transition temperature. Here, we show that a two dimensional mixture of single-component fermions and dipolar bosons allows to reach experimentally feasible superfluid transition temperatures for non-standard pairing symmetries. Excitations in these superfluids are anyonic and their statistics depends on the order o…
We study a single quantized vortex in the fermionic component of a mixture of Fermi superfluid and Bose-Einstein condensate. As the density ratio between the boson and the fermion components is tuned, we identify a transition in the vortex-core structure, across which fermions in the vortex core become completely depleted even in the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime. This is accompanied by changes in key properties of the vortex state, as well as by the localization of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the vortex core. The transition in the vortex-core structure can be experimental…
We analyse a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) mixed with a superfluid two-component Fermi gas in the whole BCS-BEC cross-over. Using a quasiparticle random phase approximation combined with Beliaev theory to describe the Fermi superfluid and the BEC respectively, we show that the single particle and collective excitations of the Fermi gas give rise to an induced interaction between the bosons, which varies strongly with momentum and frequency. It diverges at the sound mode of the Fermi superfluid, resulting in a sharp avoided crossing feature and a corresponding sign change of the interaction en…
