First, a condition for the Bose-Einstein transition in the superfluid liquid helium is presented due to the creation of a free neutron spinless pairs in a liquid helium and a dilute neutron gas mixture. We proposed a new model of dilute Bose gas, where presence atoms in the condensate is a suppressor for the collective modes as well as a creator for single-particle excitations On other hand, it is shown that the terms, of the interaction between the excitations of the Bose gas and the density modes of the neutron, meditate an attractive interaction via the neutron modes, which in turn leads to a bound state on a spinless neutron pair. The lambda transition is defined by a condition for the Bose-Einstein transition, which transforms reflected neutron pair modes to single neutron modes.
This is the manuscript version of the Physics ViewPoint article introducing the paper "Observation of half-quantum vortices in topological superfluid $^3$He", by S. Autti et al., which appeared in Physical Review Letters, December 14, 2016.
The transition mechanism of metal-insulator in metal oxides is discussed in detail, which is a part of the mechanism of superconductivity. Through the study of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene superconductor and other new findings on superconductivity, we further demonstrate that the physical mechanism of superconductivity proposed in Part I is the only correct way to handle the properties of superconductivity in various materials. We propose that superfluid helium consists of normal liquid helium mixed with high-energy helium atoms. Based on this new model, all peculiar features discovere…
We study the scattering of first and second sound waves by quantum vorticity in superfluid Helium using two-fluid hydrodynamics. The vorticity of the superfluid component and the sound interact because of the nonlinear character of these equations. Explicit expressions for the scattered pressure and temperature are worked out in a first Born approximation, and care is exercised in delimiting the range of validity of the assumptions needed for this approximation to hold. An incident second sound wave will partly convert into first sound, and an incident first sound wave will partly convert into…
Superfluid $T_c$ of liquid helium-3 and its pressure dependence are calculated by using a relation obtained from our macro-orbital microscopic theory. The results agree closely with experiments. This underlines the accuracy of our relation and its potential to provide superfluid $T_c$ of electron fluid in widely different superconductors and renders experimental foundation to our conclusion related to the basic factors responsible for the formation of (q, -q) bound pairs of fermions and the onset of superfluidity in a fermionic system.
This article presents a phenomenological dynamic phase transition theory -- modeling and analysis -- for liquid helium-3. We derived two new models, for liquid helium-3 with or without applied field, by introducing three wave functions and using a unified dynamical Ginzburg-Landau model. The analysis of these new models leads to predictions of existence of 1) a unstable region, 2) a new phase C in a narrow region, and 3) switch points of transition types on the coexistence curves near two triple points. It is hoped that these predictions will be useful for designing better physical experiments…
Optical tweezers, the three-dimensional confinement of a nanoparticle by a strongly focused beam of light, have been widely employed in investigating biomaterial nanomechanics, nanoscopic fluid properties, and ultrasensitive detections in various environments such as inside living cells, at gigapascal pressure, and under high vacuum. However, the cryogenic operation of solid-state-particle optical tweezers is poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate the optical trapping of metallic and dielectric nanoparticles in superfluid helium below 2 K, which is two orders of magnitude lower than …
We present measurements of how a single vortex line in superfluid helium interacts with a macroscopic bump on the chamber wall. At a general level our measurements confirm computational work on vortex pinning by a hemispherical bump, but not all the details agree. Rather than observing a unique pin location, we find that a given applied velocity field can support pinning at multiple sites along the bump, both near its apex and near its edge. We also find that pinning is less favorable than expected. A vortex can pass near or even traverse the bump itself with or without pinning, depending on i…
We consider the Josephson effect when two independent Bose superfluids are weakly connected. In the presence of interparticle interaction and based on the calculations of the one-particle density matrix of the whole system, we find that the one-particle density matrix can be factorized which satisfies the general criterion of Bose superfluid proposed by Penrose and Onsager. By introducing an effective order parameter for the whole system, our researches show that there is Josephson effect for two independent Bose superfluids.
When two vortices cross, each of them breaks into two parts and exchanges part of itself for part of the other. This process, called vortex reconnection, occurs in classical as well as superfluids, and in magnetized plasmas and superconductors. We present the first experimental observations of reconnection between quantized vortices in superfluid helium. We do so by imaging micron-sized solid hydrogen particles trapped on quantized vortex cores (Bewley GP, Lathrop DP, Sreenivasan KR, 2006, Nature, 441:588), and by inferring the occurrence of reconnection from the motions of groups of recoiling…
Matter at low temperatures exhibits unusual properties such as superfluidity, superconductivity, Bose-Einstein condensation, and supersolidity. These states display quantum mechanical behaviours at scales much larger than atomic dimensions. As in many phase transitions, defects can occur during the transition to the low temperature state. The study of these defects yields useful information about the nature of the transitions and of the macroscopic states themselves. When cooled below the lambda temperature (~2.172 K), liquid helium acquires superfluid properties, and the defects in the superf…
We present measurements on both energy loss and pinning for a vortex terminating on the curved surface of a cylindrical container. We vary surface roughness, cell diameter, fluid velocity, and temperature. Although energy loss and pinning both arise from interactions between the vortex and the surface, their dependences on the experimental parameters differ, suggesting that different mechanisms govern the two effects. We propose that the energy loss stems from reconnections with a mesh of microscopic vortices that covers the cell wall, while pinning is dominated by other influences such as the…
Frequency tunability of 3D microwave cavities opens up numerous possibilities for their use in hybrid quantum systems and related technologies. For many applications it is desirable to tune the resonance at cryogenic temperatures without mechanical actuation. We show that a superconducting 3D microwave cavity can be tuned at the percent level by taking advantage of the dielectric properties of superfluid $^4$He at milliKelvin temperatures, without affecting its intrinsic quality factor -- reaching $3\times10^5$ in the present experiment.
The origin of the fountain pressure that arises from a small temperature difference in superfluid helium is analyzed. The osmotic pressure explanation due to Tisza (1938), based on the different fractions of ground state bosons, is formulated as an ideal solution and shown to overestimate the fountain pressure by an order of magnitude or more. The experimentally confirmed thermodynamic expression of H. London (1939), in which the temperature derivative of the pressure equals the entropy per unit volume, is shown to be equivalent to equality of chemical potential, not chemical potential divided…
We study the phase diagram of a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate and a two-component Fermi gas. In particular, we identify the regime where the homogeneous system becomes unstable against phase separation. We show that, under proper conditions, the phase separation phenomenon can be exploited as a robust probe of Fermi superfluid.
