We present new high resolution (R=18,000) near-infrared spectroscopic observations of a sample of classical FU Orionis stars (FUors) and other young stars with FUor characteristics that are sources of Herbig-Haro flows. Spectra are presented for the region 2.203 - 2.236 microns which is rich in absorption lines sensitive to both effective temperatures and surface gravities of stars. Both FUors and FUor-like stars show numerous broad and weak unidentified spectral features in this region. Spectra of the 2.280 - 2.300 micron region are also presented, with the 2.2935 micron v=2-0 CO absorption bandhead being clearly the strongest feature seen in the spectra all FUors and Fuor-like stars. A cross-correlation analysis shows that FUor and FUor-like spectra in the 2.203 - 2.236 micron region are not consistent with late-type dwarfs, giants, nor embedded protostars. The cross-correlations also show that the observed FUor-like Herbig-Haro energy sources have spectra that are substantively similar to those of FUors. Both object groups also have similar near-infrared colors. The large line widths and double-peaked nature of the spectra of the FUor-like stars are consistent with the established accretion disk model for FUors, also consistent with their near-infrared colors. It appears that young stars with FUor-like characteristics may be more common than projected from the relatively few known classical FUors.
High-resolution spectroscopy was obtained of the FUors FU Ori and V1057 Cyg between 1995 and 2002 with SOFIN at NOT and with HIRES at Keck I. During those years FU Ori remained about 1 mag. (in B) below its 1938-39 maximum brightness, but V1057 Cyg (B ~ 10.5 at peak in 1970-71) faded from about 13.5 to 14.9 and then recovered slightly. Their photospheric spectra resemble a rotating G0 Ib supergiant, with v_eq sin i = 70 km/s for FU Ori and 55 km/s for V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg faded, P Cyg structure in Halpha and the IR CaII lines strengthened and a complex shortward-displaced shell spectrum inc…
OO Serpentis is a deeply embedded pre-main sequence star that went into outburst in 1995 and gradually faded afterwards. Its eruption resembled the well-known FU Orionis-type or EX Lupi-type outbursts. Since very few such events have ever been documented at infrared wavelengths, our aim is to study the temporal evolution of OO Ser in the infrared. OO Ser was monitored with the Infrared Space Observatory starting 4 months after peak brightness and covering 20 months. In 2004-2006 we again observed OO Ser from the ground and complemented this dataset with archival Spitzer obsevations also from 2…
The occurrence of new FU Orionis-like objects is fundamental to understand the outburst mechanism in young stars and their role in star formation and disk evolution. Our work is aimed at investigating the properties of the recent outburst of V1647 Ori. Using optical and mid infrared long slit spectroscopy we monitored V1647 Ori in outburst between February 2004 and January 2006. The optical spectrum is characterized by Halpha and Hbeta in P-Cygni profile and by many weak FeI and FeII emission lines. Short timescale variability was measured in the continuum and line emission. On January 2006 we…
(abridged) We present spectroscopy data for a sample of 14 FUors and 2 TTauri stars observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope or with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Based on the appearance of the 10 micron silicate feature we define 2 categories of FUors. Objects showing the silicate feature in absorption (Category 1) are still embedded in a dusty and icy envelope. The shape of the 10 micron silicate absorption bands is compared to typical dust compositions of the interstellar medium and found to be in general agreement. Only one object (RNO 1B) appears to be too rich in amorphous pyrox…
We broadly discuss mid-infrared spectroscopy and detail our new high spectral resolution instrument, the Texas Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES).
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications - starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) - with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The agreement between mid-infrared and optical classification is excellent if optical LINER spectra are assigned to the starburst group. The starburst nature of ULIRG LINERs strongly supports the suggestion t…
We present first results of an exploratory study to use integral field spectroscopy to observe extrasolar planets. We focus on transiting "Hot Jupiters" and emphasize the importance of observing strategy and exact timing. We demonstrate how integral field spectroscopy compares with other spectroscopic techniques currently applied. We have tested our concept with a time series observation of HD209458b obtained with SINFONI at the VLT during a superior conjunction.
The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of the two instruments on board the AKARI satellite. In addition to deep imaging from 1.8-26.5um for the pointed observation mode of the AKARI, it has a spectroscopic capability in its spectral range. By replacing the imaging filters by transmission-type dispersers on the filter wheels, it provides low-resolution (lambda/d_lambda ~ 20-120) spectroscopy with slits or in a wide imaging field-of-view (approximately 10'X10'). The IRC spectroscopic mode is unique in space infrared missions in that it has the capability to perform sensitive wide-field spectroscopic s…
We present 0.8-5.2 micron spectroscopy of the compact source at the base of a variable nebula (McNeil's Nebula Object) in the Lynds 1630 dark cloud that went into outburst in late 2003. The spectrum of this object reveals an extremely red continuum, CO bands at 2.3-2.5 microns in emission, a deep 3.0 micron ice absorption feature, and a solid state CO absorption feature at 4.7 microns. In addition, emission lines of H, Ca II, Mg I, and Na I are present. The Paschen lines exhibit P Cygni profiles, as do two lines of He I, although the emission features are very weak in the latter. The Brackett …
We present low resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of an unbiased sample of 24 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), selected from samples previously observed spectroscopically in the mid-infrared with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Qualitatively, the near-infrared spectra resemble those of starbursts. Only in one ULIRG, IRAS 04114-5117E, do we find spectroscopic evidence for AGN activity. The spectroscopic classification in the near-infrared is in very good agreement with the mid-infrared one. For a subset of our sample for which extinction corrections can be derived from Pa-alph…
We have obtained for the first time $K$-band infrared spectra of the soft X-ray transient V616 Mon (=A0620--00). We determine the 2-sigma upper limit to the fraction of light arising from the accretion disc to be 27 percent. The effect this has on the binary inclination, determined from modelling the infrared ellipsoidal variations is to increase it by less than 7 degrees and decrease the mass of the black hole by less than 3.6 Msun.
On Earth, the Dry Valleys of Antarctica provide the closest martian-like environment for the study of extremophiles. Colonies of bacteries are protected from the freezing temperatures, the drought and UV light. They represent almost half of the biomass of those regions. Due to there resilience, endolithes are one possible model of martian biota. We propose to use infrared spectroscopy to remotely detect those colonies even if there is no obvious sign of their presence. This remote sensing approach reduces the risk of contamination or damage to the samples.
We have obtained near-infrared spectroscopy of a small sample of powerful Compact Steep-Spectrum (CSS) radio sources mainly, but not exclusively, from the 3CR sample. We find no differences between the distributions in the equivalent width and luminosity of the [OIII] 5007A line for our sample and other larger, presumably older, high-redshift 3C objects, suggesting that the underlying quasar luminosity remains roughly constant as quasars age. We also find a possible broad line in 3C241, adding to recent evidence for broad lines in some radio galaxies.
Using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of two bright submillimeter galaxies. SMMJ02399-0136 at z=2.81 shows a superposition of PAH emission features and a mid-infrared continuum, indicating significant and roughly equal contributions to its bolometric luminosity from star formation and from a Compton-thick AGN. We derive a new redshift of z=2.80 for MMJ154127+6616 from the IRS spectrum and find this object is dominated by starburst PAH emission. The rest frame mid- to far-infrared spectral energy distrib…
We present low resolution mid infrared spectra of 16 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) obtained with the CVF spectroscopy mode of ISOCAM on board the Infrared Space Observatory ISO. Our sample completes previous ISO spectroscopy of ultra- and hyperluminous infrared galaxies towards higher luminosities. The combined samples cover an infrared luminosity range of \~10^{12 -13.1} Lo. For about half of the high luminosity ULIRGs studied here, strong aromatic emission bands suggest starburst dominance. Other spectra are dominated by a strong AGN-related continuum with weak superposed emission…
Integral-field-spectroscopy and multi-object-spectroscopy provide the high multiplex gain required for efficient use of the upcoming generation of extremely large telescopes. We present instrument developments and designs for both concepts, and how these designs can be applied to cryogenic near-infrared instrumentation. Specifically, the fiber-based concept stands out the possibility to expand it to any number of image points, and its modularity predestines it to become the new concept for multi-field-spectroscopy. Which of the three concepts --- integral-field-, multi-object-, or multi-field-…
We report complete near-infrared (0.9-2.4 $μ$m) spectral observations of the largest know trans-neptunian objects (TNO) 28976 = 2001 KX$_{76}$ taken in two different nights using the new Near Infrared Camera Spectrometer (NICS) attached to the 3.56m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). The spectra are featureless and correspond to a neutral colored object. Our observations indicate that the surface of 2001 KX$_{76}$ is probably highly evolved due to long term irradiation, and that collisional resurfacing processes have not played an important role in its evolution.
We present near-infrared spectroscopy of low-mass companions in a nearby triple system HD 130948 (Gliese 564, HR 5534). Adaptive optics on the Subaru Telescope allowed spectroscopy of the individual components of the 0".13 binary system. Based on a direct comparison with a series of template spectra, we determined the spectral types of HD 130948B and C to be L4 +- 1. If we take the young age of the primary star into account (0.3-0.8 Gyr), HD 130948B and C most likely are a binary brown dwarf system.
We present new observations of the central regions of the starburst galaxy M82 consisting of near-infrared H- and K-band integral field spectroscopy from the MPE 3D instrument, and 2.4-45 micron spectroscopy from the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on board ISO. These measurements are used, together with data from the literature, to re-examine the issue of extinction, determine the physical conditions of the interstellar medium, and characterize the composition of the stellar populations. We find that purely foreground extinction cannot reproduce the global relative intensities of H recomb…
We present JHK photometry and spectroscopy of RX J0019.8+2156. The spectrum appears to be dominated by the accretion disc to at least 2.4 microns, over any other source of emission. We find Paschen, Brackett and HeII lines strongly in emission, but no HeI. There are satellite lines approximately 850km/s either side of the strongest, unblended hydrogen lines. These satellite lines may be the spectral signature of jets from the accretion disc.
The shape of the main arc formed by the Canis Major clouds has been suggested to result from a supernova explosion possibly triggering the recent star formation activity. The presence of dozens of OB stars and reflection nebulae forms the CMa OB1/R1 associations. More than a hundred emission line stars are found in this region, including the famous Z CMa, a binary system containing a Herbig Be star and a FUor companion. Several embedded infrared clusters with different ages are associated with the CMa clouds. The main characteristics of the region in terms of cloud structure, stellar content, …
The detection and characterization of accretion processes in the disks surrounding young stars may be directly relevant to studies of planet formation. Especially the study of systems with very low accretion rates (<< 10^{-10} M_sun yr^{-1}) is important, since at those rates radial mixing becomes inefficient and disk material will have to be dissipated into larger bodies at its present location. In these proceedings, we compare the different methods of tracing accretion onto Herbig Ae/Be stars and conclude that high-resolution infrared spectroscopy is currently the only reliable method that o…
We present mid-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope of a sample of 11 optically faint, infrared luminous galaxies selected from a Spitzer MIPS 70um imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. These are the first Spitzer IRS spectra presented of distant 70um-selected sources. All the galaxies lie at redshifts 0.3<z<1.3 and have very large infrared luminosities of L_IR~ 0.1-17 x 10^12 solar luminosities. Seven of the galaxies exhibit strong emission features attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The average IRS spectrum of these sources is characteristic…
Integral-field spectroscopy of molecular hydrogen in the optical wavelength region and complementary long-slit near-infrared spectroscopy are presented towards HH91A.The detection of some 200 H_2 lines arising from ro-vibrational levels up to v'=8 ranging between 7700A and 2.3 microns is reported. The emission arises from thermally excited gas where the bulk of the material is at 2750 K and where 1% is at 6000 K. The total column density of shocked gas is N(H_2) = 10^{18} cm^{-2}. Non-thermal excitation scenarios such as UV-fluorescence do not contribute to the excitation of H_2 towards HH91A.…
We present near-infrared spectra for a sample of galaxies with ambiguous optical emission line ratios. These galaxies fall between starbursts and Seyferts in the usual optical diagnostic diagrams. We find a similar result with the near-infrared emission line ratios, which suggests that the galaxies are composite, containing both a starburst and AGN component. Furthermore, CO absorption, produced in late-type stars, is detected within the sample, although at a weaker level than is typical for starburst galaxies. We conclude that the CO feature is being diluted by a contribution from an AGN, the…
We present the first high spatial resolution near-infrared direct and polarimetric observations of Parsamian 21, obtained with the VLT/NACO instrument. We complemented these measurements with archival infrared observations, such as HST/WFPC2 imaging, HST/NICMOS polarimetry, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS photometry, Spitzer IRS spectroscopy as well as ISO photometry. Our main conclusions are the following: (1) we argue that Parsamian 21 is probably an FU Orionis-type object; (2) Parsamian 21 is not associated with any rich cluster of young stars; (3) our measurements reveal a circumstellar envelope, a …
To test the PDR model spectra under the physical conditions present in Orion, we have obtained moderate-resolution (R=3000) J-, H-, and K-band long-slit spectra of the Orion bar and Orion S regions These observations provide conclusive evidence for the PDR origin (rather than shocks) of the H_2 emission in each of these regions and demonstrate significant departures in the observed chemical structure from that predicted by models of homogeneous PDRs.
In the course of a mid-infrared imaging campaign of close-by active galaxies, we discovered the mid-infrared counterparts of bright compact radio sources in the central star-forming region of NGC1808. We aim at confirming that these sources are deeply embedded, young star clusters and at deriving some of their intrinsic properties. To complement the mid-infrared data, we have collected a set of near-infrared data with ISAAC at the VLT: J, Ks, and L' images, as well as low-resolution, long-slit spectra for three of the sources. Surprisingly, the new images unveil a near-infrared counterpart for…
We present imaging and spectroscopic observations of 2 nearby (z<0.1) ULIRGs from a larger sample, and address the question of whether the JHK continuum colours and slope might be effective probes of the nuclear region in searches for AGN. Certainly there is evidence for significant quantities of hot dust emission at temperatures >1000K; but it may be that rather than pointing to an AGN, this instead tells us more about the environment and evolution of the star formation.
