Charmonium, the spectroscopy of c\bar{c} mesons, has recently enjoyed a renaissance with the discovery of several missing states and a number of unexpected charmonium-like resonances. The discovery of these new states has been made possible by the extremely large data samples made available by the B-factories at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and at KEK in Japan, and at the CESR e^+e^- collider at Cornell. Conventional c\bar{c} states are well described by quark potential models. However, many of these newly discovered charmonium-like mesons do not seem to fit into the conventional c\bar{c} spectrum. There is growing evidence that at least some of these new states are exotic, i.e. new forms of hadronic matter such as mesonic-molecules, tetraquarks, and/or hybrid mesons. In this review we describe expectations for the properties of conventional charmonium states and the predictions for molecules, tetraquarks and hybrids and the various processes that can be used to produce them. We examine the evidence for the new candidate exotic mesons, possible explanations, and experimental measurements that might shed further light on the nature these states.
Exclusive production of charmonium-like XYZ states in hadron-hadron ultraperipheral collisions(UPCs) and electron-proton scattering is studied employing effective Lagrangian method. Total cross sections and rapidity distributions of charmonium-like XYZ states are obtained in hadron-hadron UPCs and electron-proton scattering process. These predictions can be applied to estimate the observed event number of exclusive charmonium-like XYZ states in hadron-hadron UPCs and electron-proton scattering. The results indicate that it is significant to search $X(3872)$ and $Z^+_c(3900)$ in pA UPCs and Ele…
With its unique data samples at energies of 3.8--4.6 GeV, the BESIII experiment made a significant contribution to the study of charmonium and charmonium-like states, i.e., the XYZ states. We review the results for observations of the Zc(3900) and Zc(4020) states, the X(3872) in e+e- annihilation, and charmonium psi(1^3D_2) state, as well as measurements of the cross-sections of omega chi_cJ and eta J/psi, and the search for e+e- to gamma chi_cJ and gamma Y(4140). We also present data from BESIII that may further strengthen the study of the XYZ and conventional charmonium states, and discuss p…
In order to test different models proposed for some states discovered recently in the charmonium mass range that do not fit into the pattern predicted by the conventional quark model, we derive predictions for the spectrum within the hadro-charmonium picture, the tetraquark picture as well as the hadronic molecular approach. We exploit heavy quark spin symmetry for the hadro-charmonium and hadronic molecule scenarios. The patterns that emerge from the different models turn out to be quite distinct. For example, only within the hadro-charmonium picture a pseudoscalar state emerges that is light…
The molecular assignments to the three $P_c$ states and the similar production mechanism between the $Λ_b\to P_c+K$ and $B\to XYZ+K$ convince us the $B$ decaying to a charmonium state plus light mesons could be the appropriate production process to search for the charmoniumlike molecular tetraquarks. In this work, we systematically study the interactions between a charmed (charmed-strange) meson and an anti-charmed (anti-charm-strange) meson, which include the $D^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}$, $\bar{D}^{(*)}\bar{D}_1$, $D^{(*)}\bar{D}_2^*$, $D_s^{(*)}\bar{D}_s^{(*)}$, ${D}_s^{(*)}\bar{D}_{s0}^*$, $D_s^{…
The spectrum of hadrons is important for understanding the confinement of quantum chromodynamics. Many new puzzles arose since 2003 due to the abundance of experimental discoveries with the $XYZ$ structures in the heavy quarkonium mass region being the outstanding examples. Hadronic resonances correspond to poles of the $S$-matrix, which has other types of singularities such as the triangle singularity due to the simultaneous on-shellness of three intermediate particles. Here we briefly discuss a few possible manifestations of triangle singularities in the $XYZ$ physics, paying particular atte…
Within the framework of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, we study the production of $C=+$ charmonium states $H$ in $e^+e^-\to γ~+~H$ at BESIII with $H=η_c(nS)$ (n=1, 2, 3, and 4), $χ_{cJ}(nP)$ (n=1, 2, and 3), and $^1D_2(nD)$ (n=1 and 2). The radiative and relativistic corrections are calculated to next-to-leading order for $S$ and $P$ wave states. We then argue that the search for $C=+$ $XYZ$ states such as $X(3872)$, $X(3940)$, $X(4160)$, and $X(4350)$ in $e^+e^-\to γ~+~H$ at BESIII may help clarify the nature of these states. BESIII can search $XYZ$ states through two body process $e…
We study in the framework of a constituent quark model the possible contributions of molecular structures to the XYZ charmonium like states. We analyze simultaneously the $c\bar{c}$ structures and the possible molecular components in a formalism which allows us to treat channels below and above thresholds. The only molecular state found in the $1^{++}$ sector correspond to the X(3872). Molecular resonances also appear with other quantum numbers. So, the so called Y(3940) and the X(3915) are suggested to be $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ charmonium states. In the $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ sector we also found significa…
In the past decade, many new charmonium (or charmonium-like) and bottomonium (or bottomonium-like) states were observed experimentally. I will review these XYZ states which do not fit into the quark model spectrum easily.
Monte Carlo simulations for charmonium(-like) states at the planned PANDA experiment are presented, in particular the search for the $h_c'$, the search for the $^3F_4$ state and the search for the rare decay Y(4260)$\rightarrow$$e^+$$e^-$.
Charmonium(-like) or bottomonium(-like) states, which are incompatible with predictions from a static quark anti-quark potential model, are often refered to as XYZ states. In this lecture, some peculiar properties of states such as the X(3872), the Y(4260), or the Zc(3900) are explained. Such properties are utmost proximity to a threshold, overpopulation of states, or possibly binding in the regime of string breaking. Among decays, the surprising observation of isospin violation, and using radiative decays for the observation of a D-wave state is discussed. A second part of the lecture present…
I discuss the nature of the new charm and charmonium like states observed in the last few years and measurements that can test these assignments. In particular it appears that the X(3943) is the eta_c''(3^1S_0) which can be tested by looking for it in gamma gamma to D\bar{D}^*, the Y(3943) is the chi_{c1}'(2^3P_1) which can be tested by looking for it in D\bar{D} and D\bar{D}^*, the Z(3930) is the chi_{c2}'(2^3P_2) which can be confirmed by looking for it in D\bar{D}^*. If the X(3872) is confirmed to have J^{PC}=1^{++} it is almost certainly a multiquark state while if its J^{PC} is found to b…
I give a brief account of current topics in description of exotic multiquark mesonic resonances with hidden heavy ($c$ or $b$) flavor, the so-called XYZ states, in terms of hadronic molecules and hadro-quarkonium systems. Also discussed are the recently observed hidden-charm pentaquarks including additional ways of producing them in experiments.
I will report on the recent LHCb results on the evidence for the decay $X(3872)\rightarrowψ(2S) γ$, and on the improved measurement of the mass and width of the $Z(4430)^-$, the determination of its quantum numbers and the observation of its resonant character.
Many of the XYZ mesons discovered in the last decade can be identified as bound states in Born-Oppenheimer (B-O) potentials for a heavy quark and antiquark. They include quarkonium hybrids, which are bound states in excited flavor-singlet B-O potentials, and quarkonium tetraquarks, which are bound states in flavor-nonsinglet B-O potentials. We present simple parameterizations of the deepest flavor-singlet B-O potentials. We infer the deepest flavor-nonsinglet B-O potentials from lattice QCD calculations of static adjoint mesons. Selection rules for hadronic transitions are used to identify XYZ…
The BESIII Experiment at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII) collected large data samples for electron-positron collisions with center-of-mass above 4 GeV. The analysis of these samples has resulted in a number of surprising discoveries, such as the discoveries of the electrically charged $\mathrm{Z_c}$ structures, which, if resonant, cannot be accommodated in the traditional charm quark and anti-charm quark picture of charmonium. In this talk, we will review the current status of the analyses of the exotic states, as well as a number of other interesting features in the new BESIII…
Recent results of exotic states with heavy quarks, denoted as $XYZ$ states, are presented. The results include searches for the $Y$(4260) in $B$ meson decays, a spin partner of $Y$(4630), and the strange Pentaquark $P_s^+$. In addition, the measurements of the absolute branching fraction of $X$(3872) and search for double $Z_c$ production is discussed.
The quark model was formulated in 1964 to classify mesons as bound states made of a quark-antiquark pair, and baryons as bound states made of three quarks. For a long time all known mesons and baryons could be classified within this scheme. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), however, in principle also allows the existence of more complex structures, generically called exotic hadrons or simply exotics. These include four-quark hadrons (tetraquarks and hadronic molecules), five-quark hadrons (pentaquarks) and states with active gluonic degrees of freedom (hybrids), and even states of pure glue (glueb…
The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider is an upgrade of the B factory facility at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. The experiment began operation in 2019 and aims to record a factor of 50 times more data than its predecessor. Belle II is uniquely capable of studying the so-called "XYZ" particles: heavy exotic hadrons consisting of more than three quarks. First discovered by Belle, these now number in the dozens, and represent the emergence of a new category within quantum chromodynamics. We present recent results obtained from Belle II data, and the future prospects…
We present a dynamical approach for description of the multi-quark states that is based on an effective interaction Lagrangian describing the coupling of hadrons to their constituent quarks. First, we explore the consequences of treating the $X(3872)$ meson as a tetraquark bound state. We calculate the decay widths of the observed channels and conclude that for reasonable values of the size parameter of the $X(3872)$ one finds consistency with the available experimental data. Then we have critically checked the tetraquark picture for the $Z_c(3900)$ state by analyzing its strong decays. We fou…
We review selected lattice results on the charmonium spectrum and first attempts to search for the existence of exotic states. The hadro-quarkonium model was proposed to interpret some of the exotic states as a quarkonium core inside a hadron. We present a lattice study of the hadro-quarkonium model in the limit of static quarks. The charm quark decouples in low energy observables and binding energies of charmonium. In a model calculation we are able to evaluate the corrections to decoupling of the charm quark in the continuum.
The observation of many unexpected states decaying into heavy quarkonia has challenged the usual Q-Qbar interpretation. We will discuss the nature of some of the charmonium-like resonances recently observed by BES III and LHCb, and their identication according to the compact tetraquark model. We also commment the production of light nuclei in hadron collisions and the relevance for the physics of the X(3872).
The past decade witnessed the observation of several exotic charmonium-like resonances, some of which are manifestly non-qqbar mesons. We review one of the most popular interpretations of such states: the compact tetraquark in the constituent diquark-antidiquark picture. Moreover, we discuss some unexplored decay channels which are particularly sensitive to the different phenomenological models and could therefore shed some light on the nature of these fascinating states. Some brief comments on the recently observed pentaquarks are also included.
In this short review we present and discuss all the experimental information about the charged exotic charmonium states, which have been observed over the last five years. We try to understand their properties such as masses and decay widths with QCD sum rules. We describe this method, show the results and compare them with the experimental data and with other theoretical approaches.
Many charmonium-like and bottomonium-like $XYZ$ resonances have been observed by the Belle, Babar, CLEO and BESIII collaborations in the past decade. They are difficult to fit in the conventional quark model and thus are considered as candidates of exotic hadrons, such as multi-quark states, meson molecules, and hybrids. In this talk, we first briefly introduce the method of QCD sum rules and then provide a short review of the mass spectra of the quarkonium-like tetraquark states and the heavy quarkonium hybrids in the QCD sum rules approach. Possible interpretations of the $XYZ$ resonances ar…
We present a plausible mechanism for the origin of the $XYZ$ mesons in the heavy meson spectra within a standard quark-model picture. We discuss the conditions required for the existence of four--quark bound states or resonances contributing to the heavy meson spectra, being either compact or molecular. We concentrate on charmonium and bottomonium spectra, where several new states, difficult to understand as simple quark-antiquark pairs, have been reported by different experimental collaborations. The pivotal role played by entangled meson-meson thresholds is emphasized.
Through the spin rearrangement scheme in the heavy quark limit, we have performed a comprehensive investigation of the decay pattern and production mechanism of the hidden beauty di-meson states, which are either composed of a P-wave bottom meson and an S-wave bottom meson or two S-wave bottom mesons. We further extend the corresponding formula to discuss the decay behavior of some charmonium-like states by combining the experimental information with our numerical results. The typical ratios presented in this work can be measured by future experiments like BESIII, Belle, LHCb and the forthcomi…
Several states that couple to one light-meson and a heavy-charmonium are recently reported, including the $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$. These states cannot be interpreted within the constituent quark-model of mesons, and are good candidates for a new form of quark matter, four-quark matter. A review of recent results on new charmonium-like states studied at BESIII is presented.
Many of the XYZ mesons discovered in the last decade can be identified as bound states of a heavy quark and antiquark in Born-Oppenheimer (B-O) potentials defined by the energy of gluon and light-quark fields in the presence of static color sources. The mesons include quarkonium hybrids, which are bound states in excited flavor-singlet B-O potentials, and quarkonium tetraquarks, which are bound states in flavor-nonsinglet B-O potentials. The deepest hybrid potentials are known from lattice QCD calculations. The deepest tetraquark potentials can be inferred from lattice QCD calculations of stat…
Many new states in the charmonium and bottomonium mass region were recently discovered by the BaBar, Belle and CDF Collaborations. We use the QCD Sum Rule approach to study the possible structure of some of these states. In particular we identify the recently observed bottomonium-like resonance $Z_b^+(10610)$ with the first excitation of the tetraquark $X_b(1^{++})$, the analogue of the X(3872) state in the charm sector.
Caution is suggested on the comparison of the spin-singlet charmonium P-state with the centre of gravity of triplet states, when the mass splitting is of the order of a few MeV. The physics of new hidden-charm states X and Y is briefly reviewed. Perspectives for producing double-charm baryons and double-charm exotic mesons are discussed.
In this paper we investigate the Exotic Charmonium (EC) production in $γγ$ interactions present in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies as well as for the proposed energies of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Our results demonstrate that the experimental study of these processes is feasible and can be used to constrain the theoretical decay widths and shed some light on the configuration of the considered multiquark states.
A number of charmonium-(bottmonium-)like states have been observed in $B$-factory experiments. Recently the BESIII experiment has joined this search with a unique data sample collected at the different center of mass energies ranging from 3.9 GeV to 4.42 GeV in which they found new charmonium-like states with non-zero electric charge. We review the status of experimental searchs for quarkomonium-like states and also other types of non-$q\bar{q}$ meson or non-$qqq$ baryons that are predicted by QCD-motivated models. We mainly focus on results from the $B$-factories and BESIII.
Since few years, a new family of exotic states has been appearing above the open-heavy meson thresholds: the so-called $XYZ$ states. BESIII at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider plays a unique role in the study of those particles in the charmonium sector. Changing the beam energy, BESIII can collect large data samples by means of scans of the resonant region, accessing directly to all vector states. As part of a larger upgrade program, BESIII has planned to increase the center of mass energy to reach $4.7$ GeV: this will allow BESIII to investigate the nature of the $Y(4660)$, that was at first obse…
The resonances, containing $c\bar c$ plus $s\bar s$ (or light $q\bar q$) quarks in the mass region $(3900-4700)$ MeV, are analyzed in the relativistic strong coupling theory, with and without channel coupling phenomena. The conventional charmonium spectrum is presented, being calculated with the relativistic string Hamiltonian, which does not contain fitting parameters, while for high excitations the universal flattened confining potential is used. It is shown that $X(4274),X(4500),X(4700)$ can be identified as $3\,^3P_1, 4\,^3P_0, 5\,^3P_0$ states. The exotic states are considered using the c…
A number of charmonium- and bottomonium-like meson states have been observed that have properties that do not match well to expectations for the simple quark-antiquark substructure suggested by the constituent quark model. Some of them are electrically charged and decay to final states containing hidden charmonum or bottomonium mesons and, thus, must contain at least four quarks. Common properties of these so-called XYZ mesons are partial widths for decays to hidden quarkonium states plus light hadrons that are much larger than corresponding partial widths for established quarkonium mesons. I …
Exotic and higher spin (> 1) mesons are still not throughly investigated in lattice QCD. Using a set of derivative based operators we report our exploratory study of these mesons in charmonium region. We use a 12^3 X 48 anisotropic (xi = 3) clover lattice with inverse temporal lattice spacing a^-1 = 6.05 GeV. Techniques developed in this exploratory study will be utilized in our future comprehensive study of light hybrid mesons that are to be explored in the 12 GeV GlueX experiment at Jefferson Laboratory.

The ground and first excited states of the hybrid charmonium ${\bar c} c g$, with non-exotic quantum numbers $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$, $1^{--}$ and $1^{++}$ are investigated using quenched lattice QCD. They are completely ignored in the literature, only because their ground states are degenerate with $η_c$, $J/ψ$, and $χ_{c1}$, and are difficult to be distinguished from these conventional charmonium mesons in experiment. However, we observe strong gluonic radial excitations in the first excited states; We predict that their masses are 4.352(225)GeV, 4.379(149)GeV and 7.315(257)GeV, completely different…
In this talk I give a short summary of the basics of conventional and exotic meson spectroscopy, and consider in particular those issues in the charmonium and charmonium hybrid sectors which can be addressed by a future antiproton facility at GSI.
We present a spectrum of highly excited charmonium mesons up to around 4.5 GeV calculated using dynamical lattice QCD. Employing novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+, 2+-) and states with high spin. Calculations are performed on two lattice volumes with pion mass approximately 400 MeV and the mass determinations have high statistical precision even for excited states. We discuss the re…
The masses of tetraquark states of all $qc\bar q \bar c$ and $cc\bar c \bar c$ quark configurations are evaluated in a constituent quark model, where the Cornell-like potential and one-gluon exchange spin-spin coupling are employed. All model parameters are predetermined by comparing the theoretical and experimental masses of light, charmed and bottom mesons. The theoretical predictions of the charmoniumlike tetraquarks are compared with the observed $XYZ$ states, and one tentative assignment is suggested. The work suggests that the $X(6900)$ observed by LHCb is likely to be the first radial e…
In this talk we present a mechanism giving rise to exotic $XYZ$ four-quark states in the meson spectra within a constituent quark model approach. We discuss its generalization to five-quark states in the heavy baryon sector. Finally, we revise some other works in the literature and experimental data where this mechanism may be working.
In recent years the B-factories and other machines have found evidence for a large number of new states with hidden charm: candidate h_c(1P), eta_c(2S), and chi_{c2}(2P) states; the well-established X(3872); enhancements called X(3940), Y(3940), and Y(4260); and a new structure at 4350 MeV. Various conventional-charmonium and more exotic interpretations of these data have been proposed. In this talk we review the current state of the experimental evidence and the prospects for clarifying the spectrum.
We present highly-excited charmonium, $D_s$ and $D$ meson spectra from dynamical lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to $M_π \sim 240$ MeV and compare these to previous results with $M_π \sim 400$ MeV. Utilising the distillation framework, large bases of carefully constructed interpolating operators and a variational procedure, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited mesons. These include states with exotic quantum numbers which, along with a number with non-exotic quantum numbers, we identify as having excited gluonic degrees of …
Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions, predicts several types of bound states. Among them are mesons ($q\bar{q}$) and baryons ($qqq$), which have been the only states observed in experiments for years. However, in the last decade, many states that do not fit this picture have been observed at $B$-factories (BaBar, Belle and CLEO), at $τ$-charm facilities (CLEO-c, BESIII) and also at proton-proton colliders (CDF, D0, LHCb, ATLAS, CMS). There is growing evidence that at least some of the new charmonium- and bottomonium-like states, the so-called XYZ mesons, are new forms of m…
We compute, for the first time using lattice QCD methods, radiative transition rates involving excited charmonium states, states of high spin and exotics. Utilizing a large basis of interpolating fields we are able to project out various excited state contributions to three-point correlators computed on quenched anisotropic lattices. In the first lattice QCD calculation of the exotic 1-+ eta_c1 radiative decay, we find a large partial width Gamma(eta_c1 -> J/psi gamma) ~ 100 keV. We find clear signals for electric dipole and magnetic quadrupole transition form factors in chi_c2 -> J/psi gamma,…
We propose a novel type of interpolating field operators, which manifests the hybrid-like configuration that the charm quark-antiquark pair recoils against gluonic degrees of freedom. A heavy vector charmonium-like state with a mass of $4.33(2)\,{\rm GeV}$ is disentangled from the conventional charmonium states in the quenched approximation. This state has affinity for the hybrid-like operators but couples less to the relevant quark bilinear operator. We also try to extract its leptonic decay constant and give a tentative upper limit that it is less than one tenth of that of $J/ψ$, which corre…
We study the photon spectrum in the radiative decays of the charmonium $\frac{1}Γ\frac{dΓ(J/ψ\rightarrowγgg)}{dz}$ as an excellent scene for hunting the exotic mesons (hybrids $q\bar{q}g$ and glueballs $gg$) and an ideal frame for the theoretical and phenomenological investigations of the gluon nature in IR, by subtle estimation of its non-zero effective mass which seems required in Quark-Gluon Constituent Model (QGCM) for identifying the nature of these exotic species.
Confinement indicates an asymptotic quark state not observable except its energy is zero. Unitarity indicates that the total probability of a definite state of quark system to transit to any final state is exactly one. This talk reviews some important conclusions/predictions from the basic properties like unitarity of the combination model, as addressed by the title. We also in the Postscript section address the bottom quark energy loss. In the discussions around the dinner table in the Rencontre, the author combined the large transverse momentum J/Psi suppression and the contribution to J/Psi…
In this thesis, the QCD sum rules approach has been used to study the nature of the following charmonium resonances: Y(3930), Y(4140), X(4350), Y(4260), Y(4360) and Y(4660). There is a strong evidence that these states have non-conventional (or exotic) hadronic structures since their respective masses and decay channels observed experimentally are inconsistent with expected for a conventional charmonium state. The same phenomenon occurs on the bottomonium sector, where new states like Yb(10890) and Yb(11020) observed recently could indicate the existence of new bottomonium exotic states. In th…
