It was shown in the recent experiments that the hybrid organic/inorganic resonant structures can provide a flexible materials platform aimed at the design of novel light emitting devices. The applications of hybrid structures for photovoltaic solar cell can also be useful. We pay attention in this note that the resonant energy transfer in hybrid structure from the organic thin layer to the semiconductor nanostructures can drastically increase the intensity of the free carrier generation. To demonstrate this idea we use the results of recently published paper by Zhang et al., Nature Nanotechnology 2, 555 (2007), demonstrating the highly efficient resonance energy transfer from J-aggregates layer to semiconductor nanocrystals. It is known that the semiconductor nanocrystals with small energy gap represent a promising route to increased solar conversion in single--junction photovoltaic cells. We argue that the using of nanocrystals with small energy gap in the hybrid organic/inorganic structures similar to created by Zhang et al. can increase tens times the total intensity of carrier multiplication. The organic part in such hybrid structures will play a role of the peculiar organic concentrator of the light energy.
We report on the optical characterization of non-polar a-plane InGaN quantum dots (QDs) grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy using a short nitrogen anneal treatment at the growth temperature. Spatial and spectral mapping of sub-surface QDs have been achieved by cathodoluminescence at 8 K. Microphotoluminescence studies of the QDs reveal resolution limited sharp peaks with typical linewidth of 1 meV at 4.2 K. Time-resolved photoluminescence studies suggest the excitons in these QDs have a typical lifetime of 538 ps, much shorter than that of the c-plane QDs, which is strong evidence of th…
The multiplication rates of hot carriers in CdSe quantum dots are quantified using an atomistic pseudopotential approach and first order perturbation theory. Both excited holes and electrons are considered, and electron-hole Coulomb interactions are accounted for. We find that holes have much higher multiplication rates than electrons with the same excess energy due to the larger density of final states (positive trions). When electron-hole pairs are generated by photon absorption, however, the net carrier multiplication rate is dominated by photogenerated electrons, because they have on avera…
Singlet fission (SF), an exciton multiplication process occurring in organic semiconductors, offers a way to break the Shockley-Queisser limit in single-bandgap photovoltaics (PV). If the triplet excitons generated by SF can be transferred to inorganic quantum dots (QDs), where they radiatively recombine, SF based photon multiplication is achieved, converting a single high-energy photon into two low-energy photons. Such a SF photon multiplication film (SF-PMF) could raise the efficiency of the best Si-PV from 26.7% to 32.5%. But a precise nanoscale morphology is required within such a film con…
In organic semiconductors, bi-excitons are key intermediates in carrier-multiplication and exciton annihilation. Their local geometry governs their electronic properties and yet has been challenging to determine. Here, we access the structure of the recently discovered $S=2$ quintet bi-exciton state in an organic semiconductor using broadband optically detected magnetic resonance. We correlate the experimentally extracted spin structure with the molecular crystal geometry to identify the specific molecular pairings on which bi-exciton states reside.
CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with different organic linker molecules are attached to ZnO nanowires (NWs) to study the luminescence dynamics and the electron tunneling from the QDs to the nanowires in time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and photoconductivity measurements. The PL transients of the QD luminescence indicate two different recombination channels: the direct recombination inside the QD core and the recombination via QD surface defect states. After linking the QDs to the ZnO NW surface, photo-induced electron tunneling from an excited state of the QD into the conduction band of the nanowi…
Black phosphorus (BP) nanostructures enable a new strategy to tune the electronic and optical properties of this atomically thin material. In this paper we show, via density functional theory calculations, the possibility to modify the optical properties of BP quantum dots via covalent functionalization. The quantum dot selected in this study has chemical formula P24H12 and has been covalent functionalized with one or more benzene rings or anthracene. The effect of functionalization is highlighted in the absorption spectra, where a red shift of the absorption is noticeable. The shift can be as…
We bring fresh insight into the ensemble properties of PbS colloidal quantum dots with a critical review of the literature on semiconductors followed by systematic comparisons between steady-state photocurrent and photoluminescence measurements. Our experiments, performed with sufficiently low powers to neglect nonlinear effects, indicate that the photoluminescence spectra have no other noticeable contribution beside the radiative recombination of thermalized photocarriers (i.e. photocarriers in thermodynamic quasi-equilibrium). A phenomenological model based on the local Kirchhoff law is prop…
Quantum confined Au nanoclusters exhibit molecule-like properties, including atomic precision and discrete energy levels. The electrical conductivity of Au nanocluster films can vary by several orders of magnitude, and is determined by the strength of the electronic coupling between the individual nanoclusters in the film. Similar to quantum confined, semiconducting quantum dots, the electrical coupling in films is dependent on the size and structure of the Au core and the length and conjugation of the organic ligands surrounding it. Unlike quantum dots, however, semiconducting transport has n…
Designing molecular organic semiconductors with distinct frontier orbitals is key for the development of devices with desirable properties. Generating defined organic nanostructures with atomic precision can be accomplished by on-surface synthesis. We use this dry chemistry to introduce topological variations in a conjugated poly-para-phenylene chain in the form of meta-junctions. As evidenced by STM and LEED, we produce a macroscopically ordered, monolayer thin zigzag chain film on a vicinal silver crystal. These cross-conjugated nanostructures are expected to display altered electronic prope…
Charge transfer between photoexcited quantum dots and molecular acceptors is one of the key limiting processes in most applications of colloidal nanostructures, most prominently in photovoltaics. An atomistic detailed description of this process would open new ways to optimize existing and create new structures with targeted properties. We achieve a one-to-one comparison between ab-initio non-adiabatic molecular dynamics calculations and transient absorption spectroscopy experiments, which allows us to draw a comprehensive atomistic picture of the charge transfer process, following the time ev…
In semiconductors, photoexcited electrons and holes (carriers) initially occupy high-energy states, but quickly lose energy to phonons and relax to the band edge within a picosecond [1]. Increasing the lifetime of carriers in light-absorbing materials is necessary to improve open-circuit voltage in photovoltaics [2], charge separation in organic solar cells [3], and charge transfer in photodetection de vices [4]. Here we demonstrate long lifetimes over one hundred picoseconds for electron-hole pairs in graphene quantum dots (GQDs) due to large transition energies and weak coupling to excitonic…
Long-term observations of photoluminescence at the single-molecule level were until recently very diffcult, due to the photobleaching of organic ?uorophore molecules. Although inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals can overcome this diffculty showing very low photobleaching yield, they suffer from photoblinking. A new marker has been recently introduced, relying on diamond nanoparticles containing photoluminescent color centers. In this work we compare the photoluminescence of single quantum dots (QDs) to the one of nanodiamonds containing a single-color center. Contrary to other markers, photol…
Advanced nanomaterials with enhanced optical and photocatalytic properties for the photodegradation of organic pollutants, in particular pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), were successfully prepared by a swift one-pot synthesis. Nanostructured materials were synthesized through an integrated hydrothermal procedure which generates titanate nanotubes (TNTs) with different carbon dots (C-dots) contents, from an amorphous titanium oxide-based source and cork industry wastewaters (CIWWs) as carbon source. Their structural, microstructural, morphological, and optical properties were…
The delivery of optical signals from an external light source to a nanoscale waveguide is highly important for the development of nanophotonic circuits. However, the efficient coupling of external light energy into nanophotonic components is difficult and still remains a challenge. Herein, we use an external silica nanofiber to light up an organic-inorganic hybrid nano-waveguide, namely a system composed of a polymer filament doped with MoS$_{2}$ quantum dots. Nanofiber-excited nano-waveguides in a crossed geometry are found to asymmetrically couple excitation signals along two opposite direct…
Carrier multiplication by singlet exciton fission enhances photovoltaic conversion efficiencies in organic solids. This decay of one singlet exciton into two triplet states promises to overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit as up to two electrons may be harvested per absorbed photon. Intermolecular coupling is deemed mandatory for both, singlet exciton fission and a band-like transport. Such a coupling is manifested, $e.g.$, by the Davydov-splitting of the lowest-energy exciton transition in crystalline organic solids. For the model system perfluoropentacene, the corresponding transitions in the…

Since the last decade improving efficiency and reducing the cost of PVc has been a subject of active research among scientists. Promising progress in the field of material science and manufacturing process at Nano-level played a big role. Still, at present there are many challenges before photovoltaics for efficient and economic energy. However, Photovoltaics cell based on p-n type homojunction semiconductors with different organic and inorganic materials reported thus for general…
In conventional solar cell semiconductor materials (predominantly Si) photons with energy higher than the band gap initially generate hot electrons and holes, which subsequently cool down to the band edge by phonon emission. Due to the latter process, the energy of the charge carriers in excess of the band gap is lost as heat and does not contribute to the conversion of solar to electrical power. If the excess energy is more than the band gap it can in principle be utilized through a process known as carrier multiplication (CM) in which a single absorbed photon generates two (or more) pairs of…
We have investigated nonlinear refraction in all-inorganic halide perovskites, the CsPbBr$_3$ and CsPbBr$_{1.5}$I$_{1.5}$ nanosheet and quantum dot colloids in toluene, by a novel beam deflection technique using near-resonant continuous wave lasers. The nonlinear refraction and its time-evolution measured here have originated from thermal lensing effect. Nonlinear behaviour of heat transport in terms of intensity dependent thermal diffusion rate has been observed. Effects of convective heat flow have been measured at high intensities. Quantum dots have higher nonlinear refraction as compared t…
Graphene quantum dots (GQD) are interesting materials due to the confined sizes which allow to exploit their optoelectronic properties, especially when they interface with organic molecules through physisorption. In particular, when interfaces are formed, charge transfer (CT) processes can occur, in which electrons can flow either from the GQD to the absorbed molecule, or vice versa. These processes are accessible by modelling and computational analysis. Yet, the presence of different environments can strongly affect the outcome of such simulations which, in turn, can lead to wrong results if …
