We consider coherent radiative thermal conductance of a multilayer photonic crystal. The crystal consists of alternating layers of lossless dielectric slabs and vacuum, where heat is conducted only through photons. We show that such a structure can have thermal conductance below vacuum over the entire high temperature range, due to the presence of partial band gap in most of the frequency range, as well as the suppression of evanescent tunneling between slabs at higher frequencies. The thermal conductance of this structure is highly tunable by varying the thickness of the vacuum layers.
We report experiments that demonstrate the quantization of the conductance of photonic crystal waveguides. To obtain a diffusive wave, we have added all the transmitted channels for all the incident angles. The conductance steps have equal height and a width of one half the wavelength used. Detailed numerical results agree very well with the novel experimental results.
We consider coherent thermal conductance through multilayer photonic crystal heterostructures, consisting of a series of cascaded non-identical photonic crystals. We show that thermal conductance can be suppressed exponentially with the number of cascaded crystals, due to the mismatch between photonic bands of all crystals in the heterostructure.
We determine the range of thicknesses and refractive indices for which omnidirectional reflection from quasiperiodic multilayers occurs. By resorting to the notion of area under the transmittance curve, we assess in a systematic way the performance of the different quasiperiodic Fibonacci multilayers.
A new transport regime of photon in two-dimensional photonic crystal near the Dirac point has been demonstrated by exact numerical simulation. In this regime, the conductance of photon is inversely proportional to the thickness of sample, which can be described by Dirac equation very well. Both of bulk and surface disorders always reduce the transmission, which is in contrast to the previous theoretical prediction that they increase the conductance of electron at the Dirac point of grephene. However, regular tuning of interface structures can cause the improvement of photon conductance. Furthe…
A method for the electrically controlled synchronous mode tuning in the transmittance and reflectance spectra of a photonic structure consisting of an asymmetric dielectric Fabry-Perot microcavity and an ultrathin metallic film has been proposed. The excitation of a broadband Tamm plasmon-polariton at the metal-Bragg mirror interface is accompanied by the two phenomena opposing one another. Due to the strong absorption induced by the metal, a sufficient rejection level in reflection of the off-resonant radiation has been obtained in a wide spectral range, which almost coincides with the photon…
The study of photonic crystals, artificial materials whose dielectric properties can be tailored according to the stacking of its constituents, remains an attractive research area. In this article we have employed a transfer matrix treatment to study the propagation of light waves in Fibonacci quasiperiodic dieletric multilayers with graphene embedded. We calculated their dispersion and transmission spectra in order to investigate the effects of the graphene monolayers and quasiperiodic disorder on the system physical behavior. The quasiperiodic dieletric multilayer is composed of two building…
Magnetooptical properties of magnetic photonic crystals have been investigated in the view of their possible applications for the modern integrated-optics devices. A "transfer matrices" formalism was expanded for the case of oblique light incidence on the periodic nanoscaled magnetic multilayered systems. Several new effects such as the Faraday effect dependence on the incidence angle and the tunability of the bandgap defect modes spectral location by external magnetic fields were found. Several possibilities of one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystals applications for the optical devices ar…

In this paper, a multilayer thermal infrared detector model has been achieved by finite element method (FEM). All contributions of the thermal conductance were taken into account and calculated. In order to maximize the detector response, it is necessary to reduce the thermal conductance. Dynamic simulation in 3D was used to optimize this FEM model. The effect of the substrate properties of the detector on its response has been studied. Moreover, different boundary conditions have been analyzed. Optimal detector response values are obtained when the substrate thermal conductivity and its thick…
Semiconductor interfaces, such as these existing in multilayer structures (e.g., quantum wells (QWs)), are interesting because of their ability to form 2D electron gases (2DEGs), in which charge carriers behave completely differently than they do in the bulk. As an example, in the presence of a strong magnetic field, the Landau quantization of electronic levels in the 2DEG results in the quantum Hall effect (QHE), in which Hall conductance is quantized. This chapter is devoted to the properties of such 2DEGs in multilayer structures made of compound semiconductors belonging to the class of Se-…
This study addresses high electric field transport in multilayer black phosphorus (BP) field effect transistors (FETs) with self-heating and thermal spreading by dielectric engineering. Interestingly, we found that multilayer BP device on a SiO2 substrate exhibited a maximum current density of 3.3 x 10E10 A/m2 at an electric field of 5.58 MV/m, several times higher than multilayer MoS2. Our breakdown thermometry analysis revealed that self-heating was impeded along BP-dielectric interface, resulting in a thermal plateau inside the channel and eventual Joule breakdown. Using a size-dependent el…

In this paper the transmission of electromagnetic waves through a one-dimensional lossy photonic crystal consisting of layers with negative and positive refractive indices is investigated. The behavior and characteristics of the bandwidth, the depth and the central frequency of the zero-n gap for different incidence angles, polarization, loss factor and ratios of thickness of the layers are studied. The results show that the gap is very sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization and the thickness ratio, but it is nearly insensitive to small loss factor. Such properties are quite useful in …
Structuring materials is one mechanism to influence the thermal conductivity and thus thermoelectric efficiency. In order to investigate the scattering of phonons in multilayer structures we developed a beam matching technique, which is based on the concept of individual phonons and their scattering at interfaces. One of the major goals is to efficiently determine the complex band structure of the bulk materials. The complex band structure is determined using selected k-points on a triangulated grid in the complex plane of wave vectors perpendicular to the interface. Matching the phonon modes …
We have designed, optimized, fabricated and characterized highly reflective quasi-omnidirectional (angular range of $0-60^\circ$) multilayered structures with a wide spectral range. Two techniques, chirping (a continuous change in thicknesses) and stacking of Bragg-type sub-structures, have been used to enhance the reflectance with minimum thickness for a given pair of refractive indices. Numerical calculations were carried out employing the transfer matrix method and we optimized the design parameters to obtain maximal reflectance averaged over different spectral ranges for all angles. We fab…

MPC (Magneto-Photonic Crystal) Optimisation is a feature-rich Windows software application designed to enable researchers to analyze the optical and magneto-optical spectral properties of multilayers containing gyrotropic constituents. A set of computational algorithms aimed at enabling the design optimization and optical or magneto-optical (MO) spectral analysis of 1D magnetic photonic crystals (MPC) is reported, together with its Windows software implementation. Relevant material property datasets (e.g., the optical spectra of refractive index, absorption, and gyration) of several important …
We investigate the optical transmission spectra for $s$-polarized (TE) and $p$-polarized (TM) waves in one-dimensional photonic quasicrystals on a quasiperiodic multilayer structure made up by alternate layers of SiO$_{2}$ and \textit{metamaterials}, organized by following the Octonacci sequence. Maxwell's equations and the transfer-matrix technique are used to derive the transmission spectra for the propagation of normaly and obliquely incident optical fields. We assume Drude-Lorentz-type dispersive response for the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability of the metamaterials. For n…
We report on the investigation of morphology, magnetic and conductive properties of the mutilayered nanostructures [(Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$]/[C]$_{47}$ consisting of the contacting magnetic (Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$ nanocomposite and amorphous semiconductor carbon C layers. It is shown by Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering method that the ordering and the size of nanoparticles in the magnetic layers do not change profoundly with increasing of carbon layer thickness. Combining both vertical and in-plane two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures opens up the possibility to create an unprecedented architecture using 2D atomic layer building blocks. The thermal transport properties of such mixed heterostructures, critical to various applications in nanoelectronics, however, have not been thoroughly explored. Herein, we construct two configurations of multilayer in-plane graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (Gr/h-BN) heterostructures (i.e. mixed heterostructures) via weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions and systematically investigate the dependence of their interfaci…
