Quantum interference effects and resulting quantum corrections of the conductivity have been intensively studied in disordered conductors over the last decades. The knowledge of phase coherence lengths and underlying dephasing mechanisms are crucial to understand quantum corrections to the resistivity in the different material systems. Due to the internal magnetic field and the associated breaking of time-reversal symmetry quantum interference effects in ferromagnetic materials have been scarcely explored. Below we describe the investigation of phase coherent transport phenomena in the newly discovered ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. We explore universal conductance fluctuations in mesoscopic (Ga,Mn)As wires and rings, the Aharonov-Bohm effect in nanoscale rings and weak localization in arrays of wires, made of the ferromagnetic semiconductor material. The experiments allow to probe the phase coherence length L_phi and the spin flip length L_SO as well as the temperature dependence of dephasing.
We study coherent transport of levitons through a single-level quantum dot system driven by Lorentzian-shaped voltage pulses. We demonstrate the repeated emergence of the Kondo resonance in the dynamical regimes where the Fermi sea is driven by optimal pulses free of particle-hole excitations. The formation of the Kondo resonance significantly enhances the dc transport of levitons.
We systematically study the coherent transport (Josephson tunneling and counterflow current) and its breakdown which leads to incoherent charge flow in in the excitonic BCS condensate formed in GaAs bilayers at $ν_{tot}=1/2+1/2$. The Josephson currents in samples with three different interlayer distances vary by four orders of magnitude. In contrast, the breakdown thresholds for the $ν_{tot}=1$ quantum Hall state are comparable. Furthermore, Coulomb drag in a Corbino ring reveals that the coherent counterflow current coexists with the dissipative charge transport.
An interplay between charge discreteness, coherent scattering and Coulomb interaction yields nontrivial effects in quantum transport. We derive a real time effective action and an equivalent quantum Langevin equation for an arbitrary coherent scatterer and evaluate its current-voltage characteristics in the presence of interactions. Within our model, at large conductances $G_0$ and low $T$ (but outside the instanton-dominated regime) the interaction correction to $G_0$ saturates and causes conductance suppression by a universal factor which depends only on the type of the conductor.
We study thermoelectric transport through a coherent molecular conductor connected to two electron and two phonon baths using the nonequilibrium Green's function method. We focus on the mutual drag between electron and phonon transport as a result of `momentum' transfer, which happens only when there are at least two phonon degrees of freedom. After deriving expressions for the linear drag coefficients, obeying the Onsager relation, we further investigate their effect on nonequilibrium transport. We show that the drag effect is closely related to two other phenomena: (1) adiabatic charge pumpi…
Graphene nanoribbons provide an opportunity to integrate phase-coherent transport phenomena with nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Due to the strain induced by a deflection in a graphene nanoribbon resonator, coherent electron transport and mechanical deformations couple. As the electrons in graphene have a Fermi wavelength λ~ a_0 = 1.4 Å, this coupling can be used for sensitive displacement detection in both armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbon NEMS. Here it is shown that for ordered as well as disordered ribbon systems of length L, a strain ε~ (w/L)^2 due to a deflection w leads to a …
We demonstrate the coherent transport of thermal energy in superlattices by introducing a microscopic definition of the phonon coherence length. We demonstrate how to distinguish a coherent transport regime from diffuse interface scattering and discuss how these can be specifically controlled by several physical parameters. Our approach provides a convenient framework for the interpretation of previous experiments and thermal conductivity calculations and paves the way for the design of a new class of thermal interface materials.
We consider non-equilibrium transport in disordered conductors. We calculate the interaction correction to the current for a short wire connected to electron reservoirs by resistive interfaces. In the absence of charging effects we find a universal current-voltage-characteristics. The relevance of our calculation for existing experiments is discussed as well as the connection with alternative theoretical approaches.
Transport through a point contact is accurately modelled by assigning to the junction an ensemble of independent transport channels with possibly different transmissions. We here argue that for a series of two contacts, coherently coupled across an island, the transport channels are different from the ensembles that would describe each contact taken as stand-alone device. We further show that instead of two sets of channels with manifold cross-links over the island the double junction can be described by pairs of channels from both sides coherently coupled together, where each pair, however, h…
We show that the coherence of charge transfer through a weakly coupled double-dot dimer can be determined by analyzing the statistics of the conductance pattern, and does not require large phase coherence length in the host material. We present an experimental study of the charge transport through a small Si nanostructure, which contains two quantum dots. The transport through the dimer is shown to be coherent. At the same time, one of the dots is strongly coupled to the leads, and the overall transport is dominated by inelastic co-tunneling processes.
Graphene has opened new avenues of research in quantum transport, with potential applications for coherent electronics. Coherent transport depends sensitively on scattering from microscopic disorder present in graphene samples: electron waves traveling along different paths interfere, changing the total conductance. Weak localization is produced by the coherent backscattering of waves, while universal conductance fluctuations are created by summing over all paths. In this work, we obtain conductance images of weak localization with a liquid-He-cooled scanning probe microscope, by using the tip…
Employing a real time effective action formalism we analyze electron transport and current fluctuations in comparatively short coherent conductors in the presence of electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate that, while Coulomb interaction tends to suppress electron transport, it may {\it strongly enhance} shot noise in scatterers with highly transparent conducting channels. This effect of excess noise is governed by the Coulomb gap observed in the current-voltage characteristics of such scatterers. We also analyze the frequency dispersion of higher current cumulants and emphasize a direc…
A fundamental question in quantum transport is how quantum coherence influences charge transfer through nanostructures. We address this issue for linear triple quantum dots by comparison of a Lindblad density matrix description with a Pauli rate equation approach and analyze the corresponding zero-frequency counting statistics for coherent and sequential charge tunneling, respectively. The impact of decaying coherences of the density matrix due to dephasing is also studied. Our findings reveal that the sensitivity to coherence shown by shot noise and skewness, in particular in the limit of lar…
We show that a current-carrying coherent electron conductor can be treated as effective bosonic energy reservoir involving different types of electron-hole pair excitation. For weak electron-boson coupling, hybrid energy transport between nonequilibrium electrons and bosons can be described by a Landauer-like formula. This allows for unified account of a variety of heat transport problems in hybrid electron-boson systems. As applications, we study the non-reciprocal heat transport between electrons and bosons, thermoelectric current from a cold-spot and electronic cooling of the bosons. Our un…
We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of a T-shaped quantum dot. Replicated oscillations superimposed on one-dimensional conductance steps are observed. These structures are consistent with electron phase-coherent length resonance effects in the ballistic regime. Using a simple model, we suggest that both one-dimensional and two-dimensional electron-electron scattering gives rise to electron phase-breaking in our system.
An effective spin concept is introduced to examine the mathematical and physical analogy between phase coherent charge transport in mesoscopic systems and quantum operations on spin based qubits. When coupled with the Bloch sphere concept, this isomorphism allows formulation of transport problems in a language more familiar to researchers in the field of spintronics and quantum computing. We exemplify the synergy between charge tunneling and spin qubit unitary operations by recasting well-known problems of tunneling through a delta scatterer, a resonant tunneling structure, a superlattice stru…
A few electron double electrostatic lateral quantum dot can be transformed into a few electron triple quantum dot by applying a different combination of gate voltages. Quadruple points have been achieved at which all three dots are simultaneously on resonance. At these special points in the stability diagram four occupation configurations are possible. Both charge detection and transport experiments have been performed on this device. In this short paper we present data and confirm that transport is coherent by observing a Pi phase shift in magneto-conductance oscillations as one passes throug…
We study the coherent transport in multi-terminal mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm ring with a quantum dot embedded in an arm. Employing the Friedel sum rule for the effective single-particle levels in the quantum dot, we explain some anomalous features which have been observed in the experiment. We attribute these anomalies to the result of nontrivial quantum interference of the quantum dot with the attached ring. Further, we propose a new feature of conductance oscillations which can be a test for the validity of our model.
We investigate phase-coherent transport in InN nanowires of various diameters and lengths. The nanowires were grown by means of plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Information on the phase-coherent transport is gained by analyzing the characteristic fluctuation pattern in the magneto-conductance. For a magnetic field oriented parallel to the wire axis we found that the correlation field mainly depends on the wire cross section, while the fluctuation amplitude is governed by the wire length. In contrast, if the magnetic field is oriented perpendicularly, for wires longer than approximately …
We derive a master equation for the electron transport through molecular wires in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion. This approach is applied to two typical situations: First, we study transport through an open conduction channel for which we find that the current exhibits an ohmic-like behaviour. Second, we explore the transport properties of a bridged molecular wire, where the current decays exponentially as a function of the wire length. For both situations, we discuss the differences to the case of non-interacting electrons.
Josephson junctions operated in the dynamical Coulomb blockade regime recently gained an significant amount of attention as central building block in concepts to demonstrate the non-Abelian character of Majorana fermions. Its physical properties are strongly affected by the intimate interplay of intrinsic quantum fluctuations and environmentally-induced quantum fluctuations each of which promoting different Cooper pair transport mechanisms at small voltages around zero. To shed light on the detailed transport mechanisms occurring in this type of junction, we performed voltage-biased measuremen…
A multi-branch quantum circuit is considered from the viewpoint of coherent electron or wave transport. Starting with the closed system, we give analytical conditions for the appearance of two isolated localized states out of the energy band. In the open system, using the method of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we study signal transmission through such a circuit. The super-radiant transition occurs when the average level width becomes comparable to the mean level spacing. We consider also the case with on-site disorder and find an analytical estimate, confirmed by numerical data, fo…
We discuss the steady-state electronic transport in solid-state and molecular devices in the quantum regime. The decimation technique allows a comprehensive description of the electronic structure. Such a method is used, in conjunction with the generalizations of Landauer's tunneling formalism, to describe a wide range of transport regimes. We analize mesoscopic and semiclassical metallic transport, the metal-insulator transition, and the resonant tunneling regime. The effects of decoherence on transport is discussed in terms of the D'Amato-Pastawski model. A brief presentation of the time dep…
We show that coherent electron transport through zero-dimensional systems can be used to tailor the shape of the system's transmission function. This quantum-engineering approach can be used to enhance the performance of quantum dots or molecules in thermal-to-electric power conversion. Specifically, we show that electron interference in a two-level system can substantially improve the maximum thermoelectric power and the efficiency at maximum power by suppressing parasitic charge flow near the Fermi energy, and by reducing electronic heat conduction. We discuss possible realizations of this a…
We develop a theory for the nonequilibrium coherent transport through a mesoscopic region, based on the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The theory requires the weak coupling between the central mesoscopic region and the multiple electrodes connected to it, but allows arbitrary hopping and interaction in the central region. An equation determining the nonequilibrium distribution in the central interacting region is derived and plays an important role in the theory. The theory is applied to two special cases for demonstrations, revealing the novel effects associated with the combination…
Hybrid InSb nanowire-superconductor devices are promising for investigating Majorana modes and topological quantum computation in solid-state devices. An experimental realisation of ballistic, phase-coherent superconductor-nanowire hybrid devices is a necessary step towards engineering topological superconducting electronics. Here, we report on a low-temperature transport study of Josephson junction devices fabricated from InSb nanowires grown by molecular-beam epitaxy and provide a clear evidence for phase-coherent, ballistic charge transport through the nanowires in the junctions. We demonst…
A novel chiral interferometer is proposed that allows for a direct measurement of the phase of the transmission coefficient for transport through a variety of mesoscopic structures in a strong magnetic field. The effects of electron-electron interaction on this phase is investigated with the use of finite-size bosonization techniques combined with perturbation theory resummation. New non-Fermi-liquid phenomena are predicted in the FQHE regime that may be used to distinguish experimentally between Luttinger and Fermi liquids.
We argue that all anomalous transport properties of coherent quantum quantum Hall bilayers can be understood in terms of a mean-field transport theory in which the condensate phase is nearly uniform across the sample, and the strength of condensate coupling to interlayer tunneling processes is substantially reduced compared to the predictions of disorder-free microscopic mean-field theory. These ingredients provide a natural explanation for recently established I-V characteristics which feature a critical current above which the tunneling resistance abruptly increases and a non-local interacti…
We propose a theory of interference contributions to the two-dimensional exciton diffusion coefficient. The theory takes into account four spin states of the heavy-hole exciton. An interplay of the single particle, electron and hole, spin splittings with the electron-hole exchange interaction gives rise to either localization or antilocalization behavior of excitons depending on the system parameters. Possible experimental manifestations of exciton interference are discussed.
In realistic nanoelectronics, disordered impurities/defects are inevitable and play important roles in electron transport. However, due to the lack of effective quantum transport method to do disorder average, the important effects of disorders remain largely un-explored or poorly understood. Here, we report a generalized non-equilibrium vertex correction method with coherent potential approximation for the non-equilibrium quantum transport simulation of disordered nanoelectronics. In this method, the disorder average of various Green's functions are computed by a generalized coherent potentia…
We study a cavity-photon-switched coherent electron transport in a symmetric double quantum waveguide. The waveguide system is weakly connected to two electron reservoirs, but strongly coupled to a single quantized photon cavity mode. A coupling window is placed between the waveguides to allow for electron interference or inter-waveguide transport. The transient electron transport in the system is investigated using a quantum master equation. We present a cavity-photon tunable semiconductor quantum waveguide implementation of an inverter quantum gate in which the output of the waveguide system…
We discuss two phenomenological descriptions of low-current transport in bilayer quantum Hall system with exciton condensates, one based on a Landauer-Buttiker description of Andreev scattering at contacts to coherent bilayers and one based on a simplified single-parameter {\em p-ology} description of the weak to strong interlayer coupling crossover. The Andreev scattering phenomenology in intended to apply when the condensate is well developed and is used to predict current-voltage relationships for a variety of two contact geometries. We also apply this formalism to circumstances in which th…
We developed a coherent frequency-domain THz spectroscopic technique on a coplanar waveguide in the ultrabroad frequency range from 200 MHz to 1.6 THz based on continuous wave (CW) laser spectroscopy. Optical beating created by mixing two frequency-tunable CW lasers is focused on photoconductive switches to generate and detect high-frequency current in a THz circuit. In contrast to time-domain spectroscopy, our frequency-domain spectroscopy enables unprecedented frequency resolution of 10 MHz without using complex building blocks of femtosecond laser optics. Furthermore, due to the coherent na…
Electron energy distribution in a mesoscopic diffusive wire in the presence of an external ac voltage is obtained. At low temperatures the distribution has a form of a multi-step staircase, with the step width equal to the field energy quantum. Analytic results for the field frequency high and low compared to Thouless energy are obtained, while the intermediate frequency regime is analyzed numerically. Manifestations in the tunneling spectroscopy and noise measurements are discussed.
We study coherent transport in a system of a periodic linear chain of quantum dots placed between two parallel quantum wires. We show that resonant-tunneling conductance between the wires exhibits a Rabi splitting of the resonance peak as a function of Fermi energy in the wires indicating the emergence of strong coupling between the system constituents. The underlying mechanism of the strong coupling regime is conservation of the quasimomentum in a periodic system that leads to transition resonances between electron states in a quantum dot chain and quantum wires. A perpendicular magnetic fiel…
We model the effect of phase-breaking collisions on the coherent electron transport in a disordered one-dimensional single-channel wire. In our model the phase-breaking collisions break the wire into segments, where each segment is an independent series resistor with coherent electronic resistance and the segmentation is a stochastic process with Poisson distribution of phase-breaking scattering times. The wire resistance as a function of the wire length $L$, coherence length $L_ϕ$, and localisation length $ξ$ is calculated and the transition from coherent to incoherent transport is traced qua…
A longstanding goal of spintronics is to inject, coherently transport, and detect spins in a semiconductor nanowire where a SINGLE quantized subband is occupied at room temperature. Here, we report achieving this goal in 50-nm diameter InSb nanowires by demonstrating both the spin-valve and the Hanle effect. The spin relaxation time in the nanowires was found to have increased by an order of magnitude over what has been reported in bulk and quantum wells due to the suppression of D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation as a result of single subband occupancy. These experiments raise hopes for the rea…
Majorana zero modes are leading candidates for topological quantum computation due to non-local qubit encoding and non-abelian exchange statistics. Spatially separated Majorana modes are expected to allow phase-coherent single-electron transport through a topological superconducting island via a mechanism referred to as teleportation. Here we experimentally investigate such a system by patterning an elongated epitaxial InAs-Al island embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. With increasing parallel magnetic field, a discrete sub-gap state in the island is lowered to zero energy yielding pe…
We investigate the coherent transport properties of a DNA chain on a substrate which is subjected to a uniform electric field perpendicular to the surface. On the basis of the effective tight-binding model which simulates charge transport through DNA, the transmission coefficient, Lyapunov exponent, and localization length are numerically calculated by using the transfer-matrix method. It is found that an isolated extended state may appear at the Fermi level for a certain gate voltage when the interaction strength between the chain and the substrate is position dependent but independent of the…
We report superconducting phase-periodic conductance oscillations in ferromagnetic wires with interfaces to conventional superconductors. The ferromagnetic wires were made of Ho, a conical ferromagnet. The distance between the interfaces was much larger than the singlet superconducting penetration depth. We explain the observed oscillations as due to the long-range penetration of an unusual "helical" triplet component of the order parameter that is generated at the superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces and maintained by the intrinsic rotating magnetization of Ho.
We present measurements of the transport properties of hybrid structures consisting of a Kondo AuFe film and a superconducting Al film. The temperature dependence of the resistance indicates the existence of the superconducting proximity effect in the Kondo AuFe wires over the range of $\sim0.5$ $μ$m. Electronic phase coherence in the Kondo AuFe wires has been confirmed by observing the Aharanov-Bohm effect in the magnetoresistance of the loop structure. The amplitude of the magnetoresistance oscillations shows a reentrant behavior with a maximum at $\sim$ 870 mK, which results from an interpl…
We investigate coherent electron-switching transport in a double quantum waveguide system in a perpendicular static or vanishing magnetic field. The finite symmetric double waveguide is connected to two semi-infinite leads from both ends. The double waveguide can be defined as two parallel finite quantum wires or waveguides coupled via a window to facilitate coherent electron inter-wire transport. By tuning the length of the coupling window, we observe oscillations in the net charge current and a maximum electron conductance for the energy levels of the two waveguides in resonance. The importa…
We simulate electron transport through graphene nanoribbons of experimentally realizable size (length L up to 2 micrometer, width W approximately 40 nm) in the presence of scattering at rough edges. Our numerical approach is based on a modular recursive Green's function technique that features sub-linear scaling with L of the computational effort. We identify the influence of the broken A-B sublattice (or chiral) symmetry and of K-K' scattering by Fourier spectroscopy of individual scattering states. For long ribbons we find Anderson-localized scattering states with a well-defined exponential …
Single-crystal inorganic halide perovskites are attracting interest for quantum device applications. Here we present low-temperature quantum magnetotransport measurements on thin film devices of epitaxial single-crystal CsSnBr$_{3}$, which exhibit two-dimensional Mott variable range hopping (VRH) and giant negative magnetoresistance. These findings are described by a model for quantum interference between different directed hopping paths and we extract the temperature-dependent hopping length of charge carriers, their localization length, and a lower bound for their phase coherence length of ~…
We analyze electron transport through relatively short coherent conductors in the presence of Coulomb interaction. We evaluate the current-voltage characteristics of such conductors taking into account the effect of an external environment. Within our model, at large conductances and low $T$ the conductance is suppressed by a universal factor which depends only on the type of the conductor. We also argue that at T=0 the system ``scatterer+shunt'' can be either an insulator or a metal depending on whether its total resistance is larger or smaller than $R_Q=h/e^2\approx 25.8$ k$Ω$. In a metallic…
We performed a series of theoretical transport studies on Y-branch electron waveguides which are embedded in mid-size armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs). Non-equilibrium Greens function (NEGF) with different approximations of tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian has been employed. Using the first nearest hopping approximation, we observed very pronounced conductance quantization, the structure of which depends on geometrical design and shows a spacing of $4e^2/h$, indicating the existence of valley degree of freedom. Moreover, by incorporating the third nearest approximation, we observed seminal …
Topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are unique systems where a band inversion that is protected by crystalline mirror symmetry leads to a multiplicity of topological surface states. Binary SnTe is an attractive lead-free TCI compound; the present work on high-quality thin films provides a route for increasing the mobility and reducing the carrier density of SnTe without chemical doping. Results of quantum coherent magnetotransport measurements reveal a multiplicity of Dirac surface states that are unique to TCI. Modeling of the weak antilocalization shows variations in the extracted numbe…
In a two-dimensional quantum wire in a perpendicular magnetic field with a smooth embedded repulsive scattering potential we find in the multimode conductance resonances caused by bound states with negative binding energy. These resonances are the counterexamples to well known dips in the conductance and evanescent states caused by quasi-bound states of attractive scattering centers in the wire.
Since any realistic electronic device has some degree of disorder, predicting disorder effects in quantum transport is a critical problem. Here we report the theory of nonequilibrium coherent potential approximation (NECPA) for analyzing disorder effects in nonequilibrium quantum transport of nanoelectronic devices. The NECPA is formulated by contour ordered nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) where the disorder average is carried out within the coherent potential approximation on the complex-time contour. We have derived a set of new rules that supplement the celebrated Langreth theorem an…
We describe the coherent interaction between a defect spin at the interface of a ferromagnet and a non-magnetic material, under bias and when the magnetization of the ferromagnetic contact precesses during ferromagnetic resonance. The magnet filters charge carriers by preferentially allowing in parallel spins, which leads to a dynamic spin accumulation on the defect. Local effective fields acting on the defect spin site modify the defect spin's precession, which also modifies the charge current through the defect. This new form of current-detected spin resonance reveals the local environment o…
We analyze the time-dependent full-counting statistics of charges transmitted through a quantum dot in the coherent regime. The generating function for the time-dependent charge transfer statistics is evaluated numerically by discretizing the Keldysh time contour, which allows us to compute the higher order charge and current cumulants. We also develop an analytic expression for all order cumulants at any time given as a function of the zeros of the generating function, finding that the short time universality is due to the presence of a dominant single zero. The robustness of the universal fe…
Recent work has shown that the low energy sector of certain quantum Hall states is adiabatically connected to simple charge-density-wave patterns that appear, e.g., when the system is deformed into a thin torus. Here it is shown that the patterns emerging in this limit already determine the non-abelian statistics of the $ν=1$ Moore-Read state. Aside from the knowledge of these patterns, the method only relies on the principle of adiabatic continuity, the effectively noncommutative geometry in a strong magnetic field, and topological as well as locality arguments.
A minimal model for coherent transport through a donor/acceptor molecular junction is presented. The two donor and acceptor sites are described by single levels energetically separated by an intramolecular tunnel barrier. In the limit of strong coupling to the electrodes a current rectification for different bias voltage polarities occurs. Contacts with recent experiments of molecular rectification are also given.
In this paper we have calculated electron transport coefficient in ballistic regime through a periodic dot sandwiched between uniform leads. We have calculated the Green's function (GF), density of states (Dos) and the coherent transmission coefficient (conductance) fully analytically. The quasi gap, bound states energies, the energy and wire-length dependence of the GF and conductance for this system are also derived.
We report low-temperature electrical transport studies of molecule-scale silicon nanowires. Individual nanowires exhibit well-defined Coulomb blockade oscillations characteristic of charge addition to a single nanostructure with length scales up to at least 400 nm. Further studies demonstrate coherent charge transport through discrete single particle quantum levels extending the whole device, and show that the ground state spin configuration follows the Lieb-Mattis theorem. In addition, depletion of the nanowires suggests that phase coherent single-dot characteristics are accessible in a regim…
The tunneling conductances of a quantum point contact and a magnetized atom adsorbed on an insulating layer above a metallic substrate are obtained by considering the coherent transport of the entangled and nonentangled Kondo singlets, and these are compared with the experimental results. Spins of the entangled Kondo singlet flow unidirectionally in a sequential up-and-down manner. This transport does not follow linear response theory. The nonentangled Kondo singlet performs resonant tunneling through a coherent transport channel and yields coherent side peaks at a finite bias. The coherent tr…
