Point contact spectroscopy on a H2O molecule bridging Pt electrodes reveals a clear crossover between enhancement and reduction of the conductance due to electron-vibration interaction. As single channel models predict such a crossover at transmission probability of t=0.5, we used shot noise measurements to analyze the transmission and observed at least two channels across the junction where the dominant channel has t=0.51+/-0.01 transmission probability at the crossover conductance, which is consistent with the predictions for single-channel models.
We propose a model that describes current-in-plane tunneling transport in double barrier magnetic tunnel junctions in diffusive regime. Our study shows that specific features appear in double junctions that are described by introducing two typical length scales. The model may be used to measure the magnetoresistance and the resistance area product of both barriers in unpatterned stacks of double barrier magnetic tunnel junctions.
We analyze various limits of vibrationally coupled resonant electron transport in single-molecule junctions. Based on a master equation approach, we discuss analytic and numerical results for junctions under a high bias voltage or weak electronic-vibrational coupling. It is shown that in these limits the vibrational excitation of the molecular bridge increases indefinitely, i.e. the junction exhibits a vibrational instability. Moreover, our analysis provides analytic results for the vibrational distribution function and reveals that these vibrational instabilities are related to electron-hole …
We report inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of multilayer molecular junctions with and without incorporated metal nano-particles. The incorporation of metal nanoparticles into our devices leads to enhanced IET intensity and a modified line-shape for some vibrational modes. The enhancement and line-shape modification are both the result of a low lying hybrid metal nanoparticle-molecule electronic level. These observations explain the apparent discrepancy between earlier IETS measurements of alkane thiolate junctions by Kushmerick \emph{et al.} [Nano Lett. \textbf{4}, 639 (2004)] …
Quantum interference effects and decoherence mechanisms in single-molecule junctions are analyzed employing a nonequilibrium Green's function approach. Electrons tunneling through quasi-degenerate states of a nanoscale molecular junction exhibit interference effects. We show that electronic-vibrational coupling, inherent to any molecular junction, strongly quenches such interference effects. As a result, the electrical current can be significantly larger than without electronic-vibrational coupling. The analysis reveals that the quenching of quantum interference is particularly pronounced if t…
Single-molecule junctions are found to show anomalous spikes in dI/dV spectra. The position in energy of the spikes are related to local vibration mode energies. A model of vibrationally induced two-level systems reproduces the data very well. This mechanism is expected to be quite general for single-molecule junctions. It acts as an intrinsic amplification mechanism for local vibration mode features and may be exploited as a new spectroscopic tool.
The influence of multiple vibrational modes on current fluctuations in electron transport through single-molecule junctions is investigated. Our analysis is based on a generic model of a molecular junction, which comprises a single electronic state on the molecular bridge coupled to multiple vibrational modes and fermionic leads, and employs a master equation approach. The results reveal that in molecular junctions with multiple vibrational modes already weak to moderate electronic-vibrational coupling may result in high noise levels, especially at the onset of resonant transport, in accordanc…
The tunneling of electrons and holes in quantum structures plays a crucial role in studying the transport properties of materials and the related devices. 8-Pmmn borophene is a new two-dimensional Dirac material, which hosts tilted Dirac cone and chiral, anisotropic massless Dirac fermions. We develop the transfer matrix method to investigate the Klein tunneling of massless fermions across the smooth NP junctions and NPN junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene. Like the sharp NP junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene, the tilted Dirac cones induce the oblique Klein tunneling. The angle of perfect transmission to…
We study pentanedithiol molecular junctions formed by means of the break-junction technique with a scanning tunneling microscope at low temperatures. Using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, the response of the junction to elastic deformation is examined. We show that this procedure makes a detailed characterization of the molecular junction possible. In particular, our results indicate that tunneling takes place through just a single molecule.
We analyze quantum interference and decoherence effects in single-molecule junctions both experimentally and theoretically by means of the mechanically controlled break junction technique and density-functional theory. We consider the case where interference is provided by overlapping quasi-degenerate states. Decoherence mechanisms arising from the electronic-vibrational coupling strongly affect the electrical current flowing through a single-molecule contact and can be controlled by temperature variation. Our findings underline the all-important relevance of vibrations for understanding charg…
The interaction between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in single-molecule junctions may result from the dependence of the electronic energies or the electronic states of the molecular bridge on the nuclear displacement. The latter mechanism leads to a direct coupling between different electronic states and is referred to as nonadiabatic electronic-vibrational coupling. Employing a perturbative nonequilibrium Green's function approach, we study the influence of nonadiabatic electronic-vibrational coupling in model molecular junctions. Thereby we distinguish between systems with w…

In a nanoscale molecular junction at finite bias voltage, the intra-molecular distribution of vibrational energy can strongly deviate from the thermal equilibrium distribution and specific vibrational modes can be selectively excited in a controllable way, regardless of the corresponding mode frequency. This is demonstrated for generic models of asymmetric molecular junctions with localized electronic states, employing a master equation as well as a nonequilibrium Green's function approach. It is shown that the applied bias voltage controls the excitation of specific vibrational modes coupled to…
We investigate the role of pseudospin structure of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) in interband tunneling properties in lateral BP junctions. We find that interband tunneling is critically dependent on junction directions because of the anisotropic pseudospin structure of BP. When the armchair direction of BP is normal to the interface, pseudospins of incident and transmitted carriers are nearly aligned so that interband tunneling is highly effective, analogous to the Klein tunneling in graphene. However, when the zigzag direction is normal to the interface, interband tunneling is suppressed b…
We show that the S/F/S Josephson $φ_0$-junction permits detection of macroscopic quantum tunneling and quantum oscillation of the magnetic moment by measuring the ac voltage across the junction. Exact expression for the tunnel splitting renormalized by the interaction with the superconducting order parameter is obtained. It is demonstrated that magnetic tunneling may become frozen at a sufficiently large $φ_0$. The quality factor of quantum oscillations of the magnetic moment due to finite Ohmic resistance of the junction is computed. It is shown that magnetic tunneling rate in the $φ_0$-junct…
We study vibrational statistics in current-carrying model molecular junctions using master equation approach. Especially, we concentrate on the validity of using an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$ to characterize the nonequilibrium steady state of a vibrational mode. We identify cases where a single $T_{\rm eff}$ can not fully describe one vibrational state. In such cases, the probability distribution among different vibrational states does not follow the Boltzmann type. Consequently, the actual entropy (free energy) of the vibrational mode is lower (higher) than the corresponding thermal …
We theoretically examine the effect of the coupling of the transport electrons to a vibrational mode of the molecule on the ac linear-response conductance of molecular junctions. Representing the molecule by a single electronic state, we find that at very low temperatures the frequency-dependent conductance is mainly enhanced (suppressed) by the electron-vibration interaction when the chemical potential is below (above) the energy of that state. The vertex corrections of the electron-vibration interaction induce an additional peak structure in the conductance, which can be observed by tuning t…
We theoretically investigate the spin--wave spin current induced by the spin Seebeck effect in magnonic spin tunneling junctions (MSTJs) for arbitrary magnetization directions. We show that the MSTJ functions as a \textit{tunable} spin Seebeck diode in which the tunneling spin current can be turned on and off with high efficiency by controlling the magnetization direction.
We propose a model for a molecular junction with internal anharmonic torsional vibrations interacting with an electric current. The Wangsness-Bloch-Redfield master equation approach is used to determine the stationary reduced density matrix of the molecule. The dependence of the current, excitation energy and angular momentum of the junction on the applied voltage is studied. Negative differential conductance is observed in the current-voltage characteristics. It is shown that a model with vibrationally dependent coupling to the electrodes, asymmetric with respect to the interchanging of elect…
A multi-level Anderson model is employed to simulate the system of a nanostructure tunnel junction with any number of one-particle energy levels. The tunneling current, including both shell-tunneling and shell-filling cases, is theoretically investigated via the nonequilibrium Green's function method. We obtain a closed form for the spectral function, which is used to analyze the complicated tunneling current spectra of a quantum dot or molecule embedded in a double-barrier junction. We also show that negative differential conductance can be observed in a quantum dot tunnel junction when the C…
In bulk systems, molecules are routinely identified by their vibrational spectrum using Raman or infrared spectroscopy. In recent years, vibrational excitation lines have been observed in low-temperature conductance measurements on single molecule junctions and they can provide a similar means of identification. We present a method to efficiently calculate these excitation lines in weakly coupled, gateable single-molecule junctions, using a combination of ab initio density functional theory and rate equations. Our method takes transitions from excited to excited vibrational state into account …
Charging a nano-scale oscillator by single electron tunneling leads to an effective double-well potential due to image charges. We combine exact numerical diagonalizations with generalized Master equations and show that the resulting quantum tunneling of the mechanical degree of freedom can be visualized in the electronic current noise spectrum.
We investigate the role of electronic-vibrational coupling in resonant electron transport through single-molecule junctions, taking into account that the corresponding coupling strengths may depend on the charge and excitation state of the molecular bridge. In the presence of multiple electronic states, this requires to extend the commonly used model and include vibrationally dependent electron-electron interaction. We use Born-Markov master equation methods and consider selected models to exemplify the effect of the additional interaction on the transport characteristics of a single-molecule …
We present electronic transport measurements through thiolated C$_{60}$ molecules in liquid environment. The molecules were placed within a mechanically controllable break junction using a single anchoring group per molecule. When varying the electrode separation of the C$_{60}$-modified junctions, we observed a peak in the conductance traces. The shape of the curves is strongly influenced by the environment of the junction as shown by measurements in two distinct solvents. In the framework of a simple resonant tunneling model, we can extract the electronic tunneling rates governing the transp…
We measure electron tunneling in single-molecule transistors made from C_{140}, a molecule with a mass-spring-mass geometry chosen as a model system to study electron-vibration coupling. We observe vibration-assisted tunneling at an energy corresponding to the stretching mode of C_{140}. Molecular modeling provides explanations for why this mode couples more strongly to electron tunneling than the other internal modes of the molecule. We make comparisons between the observed tunneling rates and those expected from the Franck-Condon model.
Vibrationally coupled electron transport through single-molecule junctions is considered. Reviewing our recent theoretical work, we show that electron-hole pair creation processes represent the key to understand the vibrational excitation characteristic of a single-molecule contact. Moreover, these processes can lead to a number of interesting transport phenomena such as, for example, negative differential resistance, rectification, mode-selective vibrational excitation and a pronounced temperature dependence of the electrical current. Thus, electron-hole pair creation processes are crucial to…
We report the experimental observation of sub-Poissonian shot noise in single magnetic tunnel junctions, indicating the importance of tunneling via impurity levels inside the tunnel barrier. For junctions with weak zero-bias anomaly in conductance, the Fano factor (normalized shot noise) depends on the magnetic configuration being enhanced for antiparallel alignment of the ferromagnetic electrodes. We propose a model of sequential tunneling through nonmagnetic and paramagnetic impurity levels inside the tunnel barrier to qualitatively explain the observations.
We theoretically investigate the angular and spin dependent transport in normal-metal/helical-multiferroic/ferromagnetic heterojunctions. We find a tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect due to the spiral magnetic order in the tunnel junction and to an effective spin-orbit coupling induced by the topology of the localized magnetic moments in the multiferroic spacer. The predicted TAMR effect is efficiently controllable by an external electric field due to the magnetoelectric coupling.
Vibrational modes of molecules are fundamental properties determined by intramolecular bonding, atomic masses, and molecular geometry, and often serve as important channels for dissipation in nanoscale processes. Although single-molecule junctions have been employed to manipulate electronic structure and related functional properties of molecules, electrical control of vibrational mode energies has remained elusive. Here we use simultaneous transport and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy measurements to demonstrate large, reversible, voltage-driven shifts of vibrational mode energies of C60 …
Statistics of electron tunneling in normal tunnel junctions is studied analytically and numerically taking into account circuit (environment) effects. Full counting statistics, as well as full statistics of voltage and phase have been found for arbitrary times of observation. The theoretical analysis was based on the classical master equation, whereas the numerical simulations employed standard Monte-Carlo methods.
The transmission coefficient for vibrational waves crossing an abrupt junction between two thin elastic plates of different widths is calculated. These calculations are relevant to ballistic phonon thermal transport at low temperatures in mesoscopic systems and the Q for vibrations in mesoscopic oscillators. Complete results are calculated in a simple scalar model of the elastic waves, and results for long wavelength modes are calculated using the full elasticity theory calculation. We suggest that thin plate elasticty theory provide a useful and tractable approximation to the full three dimen…
We investigate the interplay of quantum interference effects and electronic-vibrational coupling in electron transport through single-molecule junctions, employing a nonequilibrium Green's function approach. Our findings show that inelastic processes lead, in general, to a quenching of quantum interference effects. This quenching is more pronounced for increasing bias voltages and levels of vibrational excitation. As a result of this vibrationally induced decoherence, vibrational signatures in the transport characteristics of a molecular contact may strongly deviate from a simple Franck-Condon…
We have measured the current-voltage characteristics of small-capacitance single Josephson junctions at low temperatures (T < 0.04 K), where the strength of the coupling between the single junction and the electromagnetic environment was controlled with one-dimensional arrays of dc SQUIDs. We have clearly observed Coulomb blockade of Cooper-pair tunneling and even a region of negative differential resistance, when the zero-bias resistance of the SQUID arrays is much higher than the quantum resistance h/e^2 = 26 kohm. The negative differential resistance is evidence of coherent single-Cooper-pa…
We calculate the contribution to the spin transfer torque from sequential tunneling through impurities in a magnetic tunnel junction. For a junction with weakly polarized ferromagnetic contacts, the torque is found to be in the plane spanned by the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic contacts and proportional to $\sin θ$, where $θ$ is the angle between the magnetic moments. If the polarization is larger, the torque acquires a significant out-of-plane component and a different dependence on $θ$.
The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra. This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction. These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction …
The coupling of the charge carriers passing through a molecule bridging two bulky conductors with local vibrational modes of the molecule, gives rise to distinct features in the electronic transport properties on one hand, and to nonequilibrium features in the vibrations' properties, e.g., their population, on the other. Here we explore theoretically a generic model for a molecular junction biased by an arbitrary dc voltage in the weak-coupling regime. We analyze the signature of the electron-vibration interaction on the full-counting statistics of the current fluctuations (i.e., the cumulant …
We study by first-principles calculations a densely packed island of organic molecules (F4TCNQ) adsorbed on graphene. We find that with electron doping the island naturally forms a p-n junction in the graphene sheet. For example, a doping level of ~ 3 * 10^{13} electrons per cm^2 results in a p-n junction with 800 meV electrostatic potential barrier. Unlike in a conventional p-n junction in graphene, in the case of the junction formed by an adsorbed organic molecular island we expect that the Klein tunneling is inhibited, even without an applied external magnetic field. Here Klein tunneling is…
We investigate the nonequilibrium population of a vibrational mode in the steady state of a biased molecular junction, using a rate equation approach. We focus on the limit of weak electronic-vibrational coupling and show that, in the resonant transport regime and for sufficiently high bias voltages, the level of vibrational excitation increases with decreasing coupling strength, assuming a finite and non-zero value. An analytic behavior with respect to the electronic-vibrational coupling strength is only observed if the influence of environmental degrees of freedom is explicitly taken into ac…
Tunneling hetero-junctions (THJs) usually induce confined states at the regions close to the tunnel junction which significantly affect their transport properties. Accurate numerical modeling of such effects requires combining the non-equilibrium coherent quantum transport through tunnel junction, as well as the quasi-equilibrium statistics arising from the strong scattering in the induced quantum wells. In this work, a novel atomistic model is proposed to include both effects: the strong scattering in the regions around THJ and the coherent tunneling. The new model matches reasonably well wit…
On the elementary level, electronic current consists of individual electron tunnelling events that are separated by random time intervals. The waiting time distribution is a probability to observe the electron transfer in the detector electrode at time $t+τ$ given that an electron was detected in the same electrode at earlier time $t$. We study waiting time distribution for quantum transport in a vibrating molecular junction. By treating the electron-vibration interaction exactly and molecule-electrode coupling perturbatively, we obtain master equation and compute the distribution of waiting t…
In single-molecule transistors, we observe inelastic cotunneling features that correspond energetically to vibrational excitations of the molecule, as determined by Raman and infrared spectroscopy. This is a form of inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy of single molecules, with the transistor geometry allowing in-situ tuning of the electronic states via a gate electrode. The vibrational features shift and change shape as the electronic levels are tuned near resonance, indicating significant modification of the vibrational states. When the molecule contains an unpaired electron, we also ob…
Micrometer-sized Al/AlO$_{x}$/Y tunnel junctions were fabricated by the electron-beam lithography technique. The thin ($\approx$ 1.5--2 nm thickness) insulating AlO$_{x}$ layer was grown on top of the Al base electrode by O$_{2}$ glow discharge. The zero-bias conductances $G(T)$ and the current-voltage characteristics of the junctions were measured in a wide temperature range 1.5--300 K\@. In addition to the direct tunneling conduction mechanism observed in low-$G$ junctions, high-$G$ junctions reveal a distinct charge transport process which manifests the thermally fluctuation-induced tunneli…
The effects of the spin-orbit interaction on the tunneling magnetoresistance of magnetic tunnel junctions are investigated. A model in which the experimentally observed two-fold symmetry of the anisotropic tunneling magnetoresistance (TAMR) originates from the interference between Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit couplings is formulated. Bias induced changes of the Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength can result in an inversion of the TAMR. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the TAMR experimentally observed in epitaxial Fe/GaAs/Au tunnel junctions.
We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a normal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) junction of silicene in the thin barrier limit. Similar to graphene the tunneling conductance in such NIS structure exhibits an oscillatory behavior as a function of the strength of the barrier in the insulating region. However, unlike in graphene, the tunneling conductance in silicene can be controlled by an external electric field owing to its buckled structure. We also demonstrate the change in behavior of the tunneling conductance across the NIS junction as we change the chemical potential in t…
We consider an open molecular junction in which electrons are coupled to multi-mode phonons. Using a master equation approach for equilibrated phonons, we show that nearly-degenerate phonon modes can be mapped into an effective single mode, which can result in a noticeable reduction of computational costs. As an illustration, we apply our theory to the OPV-5 molecule and show that we can obtain the consistent conductance spectra while reducing the computational time by orders of magnitude
We study a circuit where a mesoscopic Josephson junction (JJ) is embedded in an environment consisting of a large bias resistor and a normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction (NIS). The effective Coulomb blockade of the JJ can be controlled by the tunneling current through the NIS junction leading to transistor-like characteristics. We show using phase correlation theory and numerical simulations that substantial current gain with low current noise ($i_{n}\lesssim 1$ fA/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$) and noise temperature ($\lesssim $ 0.1 K) can be achieved. Good agreement between our numerical simu…
We measured the shot noise in the CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB-based magnetic tunneling junctions with a high tunneling magnetoresistance ratio (over 200% at 3 K). Although the Fano factor in the anti-parallel configuration is close to unity, it is observed to be typically 0.91\pm0.01 in the parallel configuration. It indicates the sub-Poissonian process of the electron tunneling in the parallel configuration due to the relevance of the spin-dependent coherent transport in the low bias regime.
The 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene is one kind of new elemental monolayer, which hosts anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDF). The planar \textit{p-n} junction (PNJ) structure as the basic component of various novel devices based on the monolayer material has attracted increasing attention. Here, we analytically study the transport properties of anisotropic and tilted MDF across 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene PNJ. Similar to the isotropic MDF across graphene junctions, perfect transmission exists but its direction departures the normal direction of borophene PNJ induced by the anisotropy a…
Spin dependent single electron tunneling in ferromagnetic double junctions is analysed theoretically in the limit of sequential tunneling. The influence of discrete energy spectrum of the central electrode (island)on the spin accumulation, spin fluctuations and tunnel magnetoresistance is analysed numerically in the case of a nonmagnetic island. It is shown that spin fluctuations are significant in magnetic as well as in nonmagnetic junctions.
We study the electronic transport in a graphene-based superconductor-normal(graphene)-superconductor (SNS) junction by use of the Dirac-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We consider the properties of tunneling conductance through an undoped strip of graphene with heavily doped superconducting electrodes in the dirty limit. We find that spectrum of Andreev bound states are modified in the presence of single localized defect in the bulk. The minimum tunneling conductance remains the same and this result doesn't depend on the actual location of the imperfection.
We propose tunnel junctions of a Hall bar and a superconducting lead, for observing Cooper-pair tunneling into singlet fractional quantum Hall edge states. These tunnel junctions provide a natural means of extracting precise information of the spin polarization and the filling factor of the state. The low energy regime of one of the set-ups is governed by a novel quantum entangled fixed point.
We demonstrate that a suspended nanowire forming a weak link between two superconductors can be cooled to its motional ground state by a supercurrent flow. The predicted cooling mechanism has its origins in magnetic field induced inelastic tunneling of the macroscopic superconducting phase associated with the junction. Furthermore, we show the voltage-drop over the junction is proportional to the average population of the vibrational modes in the stationary regime, a phenomena which can be used to probe the level of cooling.
The influence of ballistic channels superimposed on tunneling conduction channels in magnetic tunnel junctions has been studied in a manganese oxide based tunneling device. Inversion of magnetoresistance has been observed in magnetic tunnel junctions with pinhole nanocontacts over a broad temperature range. The tunnel magnetoresistance undergoes a change of sign at higher bias and temperature. This phenomenon is attributed to the parallel conduction channels consisting of spin conserved ballistic transport through the pinhole contact where the transmission probability is close to unity and spi…
In this contribution, we calculate the spin-dependent ballistic and coherent transport through epitaxial Fe/ZnSe (001) simple and double magnetic tunnel junctions with two different interface terminations: Zn-terminated and Se-terminated. The electronic structure of the junctions is modeled by a second-nearest neighbors {\it spd} tight-binding Hamiltonian parametrized to {\it ab initio} calculated band structures, while the conductances and the tunneling magnetoresistance are calculated within Landauer's formalism. The calculations are done at zero bias voltage and as a function of energy. We …
Vibronic effects in resonant electron transport through single-molecule junctions are analyzed. The study is based on generic models for molecular junctions, which include electronic states on the molecular bridge that are vibrationally coupled and exhibit Coulomb interaction. The transport calculations employ a master equation approach. The results, obtained for a series of models with increasing complexity, show a multitude of interesting transport phenomena, including vibrational excitation, rectification, negative differential resistance (NDR) as well as local cooling. While some of these …
In this work we discuss the combined effects of finite-range electron-electron interaction and finite-range tunneling on the transport properties of ultrasmall tunnel junctions. We show that the Coulomb blockade phenomenon is deeply influenced by the interplay between the geometry and the screening properties of the contacts. In particular if the interaction range is smaller than the size of the tunneling region a "weakly correlated" regime emerges in which the Coulomb blockade gap $\D$ is significantly reduced. In this regime $\D$ is not simply given by the conventional charging energy of the…
The Tunneling Anisotropic Magneto-Thermopower (TAMT) and the Tunneling Anisotropic Spin-Seebeck (TASS) effects are studied for a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) composed of a ferromagnetic electrode, a zinc-blende semiconductor and a normal metal. We develop a theoretical model for describing the dependence of a thermally induced tunneling current across the MTJ on the in-plane orientation of the magnetization in the ferromagnetic layer. The model accounts for the specific Bychkov-Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions present in these systems, which are responsible for the $C_{2v}$ sym…
We report on inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements carried out on single molecules incorporated into a mechanically controllable break-junction of Au and Pt electrodes at low temperature. Here we establish a correlation between the molecular conformation and conduction properties of a single-molecule junction. We demonstrate that the conductance through single molecules crucially depends on the contact material and configuration by virtue of their mechanical and electrical properties. Our findings prove that the charge transport via single molecules can be manipulated by varyi…
Scanning tunneling microscope induced light emission from an atomic or molecular junction has been probed from the tunneling to contact regime in recent experiments. There, the intensity of the light emission shows strong correlation with the current/charge fluctuations at optical frequencies. We show that this is consistent with the established theory in the tunneling regime, by writing the finite-frequency shot noise as a sum of inelastic transitions between different electronic states. Based on this, we develop a practical scheme to perform calculations on realistic structures using Green's…
Transport through molecular quantum dots coupled to a single vibration mode is studied in the case with strong coupling to the leads. We use an expansion in the correlation between electrons on the molecule and electrons in the leads and show that the tunneling broadening is strongly suppressed by the combination of the Pauli principle and the quantization of the oscillator. As a consequence the first Frank-Condon step is sharper than the higher order ones, and its width, when compared to the bare tunneling strength, is reduced by the overlap between the groundstates of the displaced and the n…
Using a simple quantum-mechanical model, we explore a tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) with a ferromagnetic electrode and a ferroelectric barrier layer, which spontaneous polarization gives rise to the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC). For realistic parameters of the model, we predict sizable TAMR measurable experimentally. For asymmetric FTJs, which electrodes have different work functions, the built-in electric field affects the SOC parameters and leads to TAMR dependent on ferroelectric polarization direction. The…
