This paper studies the link between the number of critical eigenvalues and the number of delays in certain classes of delay-differential equations. There are two main results. The first states that for k purely imaginary numbers which are linearly independent over the rationals, there exists a scalar delay-differential equation depending on k fixed delays whose spectrum contains those k purely imaginary numbers. The second result is a generalization of the first result for delay-differential equations which admit a characteristic equation consisting of a product of s factors of scalar type. In the second result, the k eigenvalues can be distributed amongst the different factors. Since the characteristic equation of scalar equations contain only exponential terms, the proof exploits a toroidal structure which comes from the arguments of the exponential terms in the characteristic equation. Our second result is applied to delay coupled D_n-symmetric cell systems with one-dimensional cells. In particular, we provide a general characterization of delay coupled D_n-symmetric systems with arbitrary number of delays and cell dimension.
In this work, we establish the response of scalar systems with multiple discrete delays based on the Laplace transform. The time response function is expressed as the sum of infinite series of exponentials acting on eigenvalues inside countable branches of the Lambert W functions. Eigenvalues in each branch of Lambert W function are computed by a numerical iteration. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results obtained.
This paper analyzes the eigenvalue distribution of neutral differential systems and the corresponding difference systems, and establishes the relationship between the eigenvalue distribution and delay-independent stability of neutral differential systems. By using the ``Complete Discrimination System for Polynomials", easily testable necessary and sufficient algebraic criteria for delay-independent stability of a class of neutral differential systems are established. The algebraic criteria generalize and unify the relevant results in the literature. Moreover, the maximal delay bound guaranteei…
In the present article, we discuss some aspects of the local stability analysis for a class of abstract functional differential equations. This is done under smoothness assumptions which are often satisfied in the presence of a state-dependent delay. Apart from recapitulating the two classical principles of linearized stability and instability, we deduce the analogon of the Pliss reduction principle for the class of differential equations under consideration. This reduction principle enables to determine the local stability properties of a solution in the situation where the linearization does…
In this paper we give a profound insight into the computation capability of delay-based reservoir computing via an eigenvalue analysis. We concentrate on the task-independent memory capacity to quantify the reservoir performance and compare these with the eigenvalue spectrum of the dynamical system. We show that these two quantities are deeply connected, and thus the reservoir computing performance is predictable by analyzing the small signal response of the reservoir. Our results suggest that any dynamical system used as a reservoir can be analyzed in this way. We apply our method exemplarily…
We prove that the spectrum of the linear delay differential equation $x'(t)=A_{0}x(t)+A_{1}x(t-τ_{1})+\ldots+A_{n}x(t-τ_{n})$ with multiple hierarchical large delays $1\llτ_{1}\llτ_{2}\ll\ldots\llτ_{n}$ splits into two distinct parts: the strong spectrum and the pseudo-continuous spectrum. As the delays tend to infinity, the strong spectrum converges to specific eigenvalues of $A_{0}$, the so-called asymptotic strong spectrum. Eigenvalues in the pseudo-continuous spectrum however, converge to the imaginary axis. We show that after rescaling, the pseudo-continuous spectrum exhibits a hierarchic…
We study the asymptotic dynamics of stochastic Young differential delay equations under the regular assumptions on Lipschitz continuity of the coefficient functions. Our main results show that, if there is a linear part in the drift term which has no delay factor and has eigenvalues of negative real parts, then the generated random dynamical system possesses a random pullback attractor provided that the Lipschitz coefficients of the remaining parts are small.
Stability analysis is performed for a linear differential equation with two delays. Geometric arguments show that when the two delays are rationally dependent, then the region of stability increases. When the ratio has the form 1/n, this study finds the asymptotic shape and size of the stability region. For example, a delay ration of 1/3 asymptotically produces a stability region 44.3% larger than any nearby delay ratios, showing extreme sensitivity in the delays. The study provides a systematic and geometric approach to finding the eigenvalues on the boundary of stability for this delay diffe…
We develop an eigenvalue-based approach for the stability assessment and stabilization of linear systems with multiple delays and periodic coefficient matrices. Delays and period are assumed commensurate numbers, such that the Floquet multipliers can be characterized as eigenvalues of the monodromy operator and by the solutions of a finite-dimensional non-linear eigenvalue problem, where the evaluation of the characteristic matrix involves solving an initial value problem. We demonstrate that such a dual interpretation can be exploited in a two-stage approach for computing dominant Floquet mul…
The solvability and stability analysis of linear time invariant systems of delay differential-algebraic equations (DDAEs) is analyzed. The behavior approach is applied to DDAEs in order to establish characterizations of their solvability in terms of spectral conditions. Furthermore, examples are delivered to demonstrate that the eigenvalue-based approach to analyze the exponential stability of dynamical system is only valid for a special class of DDAEs, namely non-advanced. Then, a new concept of weak stability is proposed and studied for DDAEs whose matrix coefficients pairwise commute.
Delayed neural field models can be viewed as a dynamical system in an appropriate functional analytic setting. On two dimensional rectangular space domains, and for a special class of connectivity and delay functions, we describe the spectral properties of the linearized equation. We transform the characteristic integral equation for the delay differential equation (DDE) into a linear partial differential equation (PDE) with boundary conditions. We demonstrate that finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the DDE is equivalent with obtaining nontrivial solutions of this boundary value problem (…
This paper is concerned with polynomial approximations of the spectral abscissa function (the supremum of the real parts of the eigenvalues) of a parameterized eigenvalue problem, which are closely related to polynomial chaos approximations if the parameters correspond to realizations of random variables. Unlike in existing works, we highlight the major role of the smoothness properties of the spectral abscissa function. Even if the matrices of the eigenvalue problem are analytic functions of the parameters, the spectral abscissa function may not be everywhere differentiable, even not everywhe…
