We study the complete set of flavor changing hyperon axial current matrix elements at small momentum transfer. Using partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, we derive the chiral and momentum behavior of the axial and induced pseudoscalar form factors. The meson pole contributions to the latter posses a striking signal for chiral physics. We argue that the study of hyperon axial matrix elements enables a systematic lattice investigation of the efficacy of three flavor chiral expansions in the baryon sector. This can be achieved by considering chiral corrections to SU(3) symmetry predictions, and their partially quenched generalizations. In particular, despite the presence of eight unknown low-energy constants, we are able to make next-to-leading order symmetry breaking predictions for two linear combinations of axial charges.
We present the first continuum extrapolation of the hyperon octet axial couplings ($g_{ΣΣ}$ and $g_{ΞΞ}$) from $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD. These couplings are important parameters in the low-energy effective field theory description of the octet baryons and fundamental to the nonleptonic decays of hyperons and to hyperon-hyperon and hyperon-nucleon scattering with application to neutron stars. We use clover lattice fermion action for the valence quarks with sea quarks coming from configurations of $N_f=2+1+1$ highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) generated by MILC Collaboration. Our work includ…
In this work, we report the first lattice calculation of hyperon axial couplings, using the 2+1-flavor MILC configurations and domain-wall fermion valence quarks. Both the $Σ$ and $Ξ$ axial couplings are computed for the first time in lattice QCD. In particular we find that $g_{ΣΣ} = 0.450(21)_{\rm stat}(27)_{\rm syst}$ and $g_{ΞΞ} = -0.277(15)_{\rm stat}(19)_{\rm syst}$.
We use two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to investigate the isovector axial charges of the spin one-half hyperons. Expressions for these hyperon axial charges are derived at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We utilize phenomenological and lattice QCD inputs to assess the convergence of the two-flavor theory, which appears to be best for cascades.
We present results for the $σ$-terms and axial charges for various hyperons and charmed baryons using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions. For the computation of the three-point function we use the fixed current method. For one of the $N_f=2+1+1$ ensembles with pion mass of 373 MeV we compare the results of the fixed current method with those obtained with a stochastic method for computing the all-to-all propagator involved in the evaluation of the three point functions.
We present the complete calculation of the SU(3)-breaking corrections to the hyperon vector form factors up to O(p^4) in the Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. Because of the Ademollo-Gatto theorem, at this order the results do not depend on unknown low energy constants and allow to test the convergence of the chiral expansion. We complete and correct previous calculations and find that O(p^3) and O(1/M_0) corrections are important. We also study the inclusion of the decuplet degrees of freedom, showing that in this case the perturbative expansion is jeopardized. These results raise doub…
Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although in principle one can formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of such two-flavor theories in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their isovector axial charges and electromagnetic observables. In particular we uncover the unde…
The axial couplings of the low lying baryons are evaluated using a total of five ensembles of dynamical twisted mass fermion gauge configurations. The simulations are performed using the Iwasaki gauge action and two degenerate flavors of light quarks, and a strange and a charm quark fixed to approximately their physical values at two values of the coupling constant. The lattice spacings, determined using the nucleon mass, are $a=0.082$ fm and $a=0.065$ fm and the simulations cover a pion mass in the range of about 210 MeV to 430 MeV. We study the dependence of the axial couplings on the pion m…
We present a complete calculation of the SU(3)-breaking corrections to the hyperon vector form factors up to O(p^4) in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. Partial higher-order contributions are obtained, and we discuss chiral extrapolations of the vector form factor at zero momentum transfer. In addition we derive low-energy theorems for the subleading moments in hyperon decays, the weak Dirac radii and the weak anomalous magnetic moments, up to O(p^4).
We address the issue of energy and charge dependence of global polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in peripheral $Au-Au$ collisions recently observed by the STAR collaboration at RHIC. We compare different contributions to the anomalous mechanism relating polarization to vorticity and hydrodynamic helicity in QCD matter. We stress that the suppression of the gravitational anomaly contribution in strongly correlated matter observed in lattice simulations confirms our earlier prediction of rapid decrease of polarization with increasing collision energy. Our mechanism leads to polarization of $\bar Λ$ o…
We use two-flavor chiral perturbation theory to describe hyperons. We focus on the strangeness conserving sector, and, as an example, calculate hyperon masses. Convergence of this two-flavor chiral expansion for observables is improved over the three-flavor theory. The cost, however, is a larger number of low-energy constants that must be ultimately determined from lattice QCD data. A formula for the mass of the omega baryon is derived to sixth order in this expansion, and will aid lattice practitioners in scale setting or tuning the strange quark mass.
We present a new study of SU(3)-breaking corrections in hyperon vector form factors relevant for the extraction of Vus. A lattice quenched simulation has been performed, showing that it is possible to reach the required precision to extract SU(3)-breaking corrections in the regime of simulated masses. In order to perform the chiral extrapolation we calculated the chiral corrections to the vector form factor in HBChPT. Besides the one-loop O(p^2) contribution, we included also the subleading O(p^3) and O(1/M_B) corrections that, due to the Ademollo-Gatto theorem, are free from the contamination…
The pion mass dependence of hyperon electromagnetic properties is determined using two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Specifically we compute chiral corrections to the charge radii, magnetic moments, and magnetic radii of the spin one-half hyperons, as well as the charge radii, magnetic moments, magnetic radii, electric quadrupole moments, and quadrupole radii of the spin three-half hyperons. Results for the nucleon and delta are also included. Efficacy of the two-flavor theory is investigated by analyzing the role played by virtual kaons. For the electromagnetic properties of…
Hyperon-nucleon interactions serve as basic inputs to studies of hypernuclear physics and dense (neutron) stars. Unfortunately, a precise understanding of these important quantities have lagged far behind that of the nucleon-nucleon interaction due to lack of high precision experimental data. Historically, hyperon-nucleon interactions are either formulated in quark models or meson exchange models. In recent years, lattice QCD simulations and chiral effective field theory approaches start to offer new insights from first principles. In the present work, we contrast the state of art lattice QCD …
The three-flavor chiral expansion for octet baryons has well-known problems with convergence. We show that this three-flavor chiral expansion can be reorganized into a two-flavor expansion thereby eliminating large kaon and eta loop contributions. Issues of the underlying formulation are addressed by considering the effect of strangeness changing thresholds on hyperon masses. While the spin-3/2 hyperon resonances are considerably more sensitive to these thresholds compared to the spin-1/2 hyperons, we demonstrate that in both cases the essential physics can be captured in the two-flavor effect…
We report on recent results of the QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration on investigations of baryon structure using configurations generated with N_f=2+1 dynamical flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions. With the strange quark mass as an additional dynamical degree of freedom in our simulations we avoid the need for a partially quenched approximation when investigating the properties of particles containing a strange quark, e.g. the hyperons. In particular, we will focus on the nucleon and hyperon axial charges and quark momentum fractions.
Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although one can theoretically formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the perturbative expansion in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their masses and isovector axial charges. Using a three-flavor expansion that includes SU(3) …
Weak radiative hyperon decays, important to test the strong interaction and relevant in searches for beyond the standard model physics, have remained puzzling both experimentally and theoretically for a long time. The recently updated branching fraction and first measurement of the asymmetry parameter of $Λ\to nγ$ by the BESIII Collaboration further exacerbate the issue, as none of the existing predictions can describe the data. We show in this letter that the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory, with constraints from the latest measurements of hyperon non-leptonic decays, can well des…
The hyperon vector form factors at zero momentum transfer, $f_1(0)$, play an important role in a precise determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{us}$. Recent studies based on lattice chromodynamics (LQCD) simulations and covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory yield contradicting results. In this work, we study chiral extrapolation of and finite-volume corrections to the latest $n_f=2+1$ LQCD simulations. Our results show that finite-volume corrections are relatively small and can be safely ignored at the present LQCD setup of $m_πL=4.6$ but chiral extrapolation n…
Results for the Lambda N and Sigma N interactions obtained at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory are reported. At the order considered there are contributions from one- and two-pseudoscalar-meson exchange diagrams and from four-baryon contact terms without and with two derivatives. SU(3) flavor symmetry is imposed for constructing the hyperon-nucleon interaction while the explicit SU(3) symmetry breaking by the physical masses of the pseudoscalar mesons (pi, K, eta) is taken into account. An excellent description of the hyperon-nucleon system can be achieved at next-to-lead…

We study the momentum and the quark mass dependence of the axial nucleon to Delta(1232) transition form factors in the framework of non-relativistic chiral effective field theory to leading-one-loop order. The outcome of our analysis provides a theoretical guidance for chiral extrapolations of lattice QCD results with dynamical fermions.
Dense compact objects like neutron stars or black holes have always been one of Gerry Brown's favorite research topics. This is closely related to the effects of strangeness in nuclear physics. Here, we review the chiral Effective Field Theory approach to interactions involving nucleons and hyperons, the possible existence of strange dibaryons, the fate of hyperons in nuclear matter and the present status of three-body forces involving hyperons and nucleons.
Chiral corrections to the delta axial charge are determined using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Knowledge of this axial coupling is necessary to assess virtual-delta contributions to nucleon and delta observables. We give isospin relations useful for a lattice determination of the axial coupling. Furthermore we detail partially quenched chiral corrections, which are relevant to address partial quenching and/or mixed action errors in lattice calculations of the delta axial charge.
In this work, I report the latest lattice QCD calculations of nucleon and hyperon structure from chiral fermions in 2+1-flavor dynamical simulations. All calculations are done with a chirally symmetric fermion action, domain-wall fermions, for valence quarks. % I begin with the latest lattice results on the nucleon structure, focusing on results from RBC/UKQCD using 2+1-flavor chiral fermion actions. We find the chiral-extrapolated axial coupling constant at physical pion mass point to be 1.23(5), consistent with experimental value. The renormalization constants for the structure functions are…
The chiral susceptibility, or the first derivative of the chiral condensate with respect to the quark mass, is often used as a probe for the QCD phase transition since the chiral condensate is an order parameter of $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry breaking. However, the chiral condensate also breaks the axial $U(1)$ symmetry, which is usually not paid attention to as it is already broken by anomaly and apparently gives little impact on the transition. We investigate the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels in order to quantify how much the axial $U(1)$ breaking contributes…
Following the recent work by Braguta et al., we perform an indirect calculation of the chiral vortical conductivity with free lattice overlap fermions by measuring the response of the energy flow to the constant axial magnetic field. We find that the measurements are contaminated by very large finite-volume artifacts. However, the continuum result for finite-temperature contribution to the chiral vortical conductivity (T^2/12) is still reproduced in the limit of infinite volume at fixed temperature.
In the past, the axion-nucleon coupling has been calculated in the framework of SU(2) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory up to third order in the chiral power counting. Here, we extend these earlier studies to the case of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with SU(3) flavor symmetry and derive the axion coupling to the full SU(3) baryon octet, showing that the axion also significantly couples to hyperons. As studies on dense nuclear matter suggest the possible existence of hyperons in stellar objects such as neutron stars, our results should have phenomenological implications related…
Motivated by the recent experimental measurements of differential cross sections of the $Σ^{-}p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range of $470$ to $850$ MeV$/c$ by the J-PARC E$40$ experiment, we extend our previous studies of $S=-1$ hyperon-nucleon interactions to relatively higher energies up to $900$ MeV$/c$ for both the coupled-channel $Λp\rightarrow(Λp, Σ^{+}n, Σ^{0}p)$, $Σ^{-}p\rightarrow(Λn, Σ^{0}n, Σ^{-}p)$ and single-channel $Σ^{+}p\rightarrowΣ^{+}p$ reactions. We show that although the leading order covariant chiral effective field theory is only constrained by the low energy data…
We calculate one-loop correction to the axial charges of the octet baryons using quenched chiral perturbation theory, in order to understand chiral behavior of the axial charges in quenched approximation to quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In contrast to regular behavior of the full QCD chiral perturbation theory result, $c_0+c_{l2}m_π^2\,\ln{m_π^2}+\cdots$, we find that the quenched chiral perturbation theory result, $c_0^Q+(c_{l0}^Q+c_{l2}^Qm_π^2)\ln{m_π^2}+c_2^Q m_π^2+\cdots$, is singular in the chiral limit.
We present a calculation of the SU(3)-breaking corrections to the hyperon transition vector form factors to $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with finite-range regularisation. Both octet and decuplet degrees of freedom are included. We formulate a chiral expansion at the kinematic point $Q^2=-(M_{B_1}-M_{B_2})^2$, which can be conveniently accessed in lattice QCD. The two unknown low-energy constants at this point are constrained by lattice QCD simulation results for the $Σ^-\rightarrow n$ and $Ξ^0\rightarrow Σ^+$ transition form factors. Hence we determine lattice-…
