We construct rigidly supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary actions, both in $x$-space and in superspace. For each standard supersymmetric bulk action a minimal supersymmetric bulk-plus-boundary action follows from an extended $F$- or $D$-term formula. Additional separately supersymmetric boundary actions can be systematically constructed using co-dimension one multiplets (boundary superfields). We also discuss the orbit of boundary conditions which follow from the Euler-Lagrange variational principle.
We study the partial breaking of $N=2$ rigid supersymmetry for a generic rigid special geometry of $n$ abelian vector multiplets in the presence of Fayet-Iliopoulos terms induced by the Hyper-Kähler momentum map. By exhibiting the symplectic structure of the problem we give invariant conditions for the breaking to occur, which rely on a quartic invariant of the Fayet-Iliopoulos charges as well as on a modification of the $N=2$ rigid symmetry algebra by a vector central charge.
We show that the particle-hole transformation in the Hubbard model has a crucial role in relating Shastry's R-matrix to the AdS/CFT S-matrix. In addition, we construct an achiral boundary for the open Hubbard chain which possesses twisted Yangian symmetry.
We study the rigid limit of 5d conformal supergravity with minimal supersymmetry on Riemannian manifolds. The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a solution is the existence of a conformal Killing vector. Whenever a certain $SU(2)$ curvature becomes abelian the backgrounds define a transversally holomorphic foliation. Subsequently we turn to the question under which circumstances these backgrounds admit a kinetic Yang-Mills term in the action of a vector multiplet. Here we find that the conformal Killing vector has to be Killing. We supplement the discussion with various ap…
We construct rigid supersymmetric theories for interacting vector and tensor multiplets on six-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. Analyzing the Killing spinor equations, we derive the constraints on these theories. To this end, we reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of necessary and sufficient conditions on the geometry. The formalism is illustrated with a number of examples, including manifolds that are hermitian, strong Kaehler with torsion. As an application, we show that the path integral of pure super Yang-Mills theory defined on a Calabi-Yau threefold M_6 localizes …
By utilizing a new procedure (the RADIO method) for deriving on-shell 2D, 2N-extended multiplets from off-shell 2D, N-extended multiplets, we derive a new on-shell 2D, N = 8 representation; the ultra-multiplet. By twisting with respect to parity, we show that many variant versions of this supermultiplet also exist.
Operators transform anomalously under the symmetry in the presence of quantum anomalies. We study this aspect of the super-Weyl anomaly in $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs), in the context of AdS/CFT. In particular, we carry out holographic renormalization for $(1,1)$ pure AdS$_3$ supergravity that is supposed to be a gravity dual of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT, and derive holographic superconformal Ward identities with corresponding anomalies. We show that the obtained super-Weyl anomaly of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT induces a quantum correction term in the transformat…
We construct and check by explicit Feynman diagram calculations the BRST Ward identities for N=2 rigid super Yang-Mills theory and N=2 extended supergravity in four-dimensional Euclidean space without auxiliary fields. We use the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. In the supergravity case we need one new contractible pair of complex spinor fields to obtain the usual gauge-fixing term and corresponding Nielsen-Kallosh ghosts.
We investigate the relationship between conformal and spin structure on lorentzian manifolds and see how their compatibility influences the formulation of rigid supersymmetric field theories. In dimensions three, four, six and ten, we show that if the Dirac current associated with a generic spinor defines a null conformal Killing vector then the spinor must obey a twistor equation with respect to a certain connection with torsion. Of the theories we consider, those with classical superconformal symmetry in Minkowski space can be reformulated as rigid supersymmetric theories on any lorentzian m…
In the framework of N=2 conformal supergravity in four dimensions, we introduce a nilpotent chiral superfield suitable for the description of partial supersymmetry breaking in maximally supersymmetric spacetimes. As an application, we construct Maxwell-Goldstone multiplet actions for partial N=2 --> N=1 supersymmetry breaking on R x S^3, AdS_3 x S^1 (or its covering AdS_3 x R), and a pp-wave spacetime. In each of these cases, the action coincides with a unique curved-superspace extension of the N=1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action, which is singled out by the requirement of U(1) duality invar…
We discuss various aspects of rigid supersymmetry within minimal N=1 off-shell supergravity using the old and new minimal formulations both in Lorentzian and Euclidean signatures. In particular, we construct all rigid supersymmetry backgrounds with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. In the Lorentzian signature we show that AdS_4 provides a rigid supersymmetric background in both formulations albeit with different amounts of preserved supersymmetry. In the Euclidean signature we find new backgrounds of the old-minimal supergravity, including squashed four-spheres and a half-BPS version o…
We develop a general setting for N=2 rigid supersymmetric field theories with gauged central charge in harmonic superspace. We consider those N=2 multiplets which have a finite number of off-shell components and exist off shell owing to a non-trivial central charge. This class includes, in particular, the hypermultiplet with central charge and various versions of the vector-tensor multiplet. For such theories we present a manifestly supersymmetric universal action. Chern-Simons couplings to an external N=2 super Yang-Mills multiplet are given, in harmonic superspace, for both the linear and no…
We study the equations governing rigid N=1 supersymmetry in five dimensions. If the supersymmetry spinor satisfies a reality condition, these are foliations admitting families of almost complex structures on the leaves. In other words, all these manifolds have families of almost Cauchy-Riemann (CR) structures. After deriving integrability conditions under which circumstances the almost CR structure defines a CR manifold or a transversally holomorphic foliation (THF), we discuss implications on localization. We also discuss potential global obstructions to the existence of solutions.
We study N=1 field theories with a U(1)_R symmetry on compact four-manifolds M. Supersymmetry requires M to be a complex manifold. The supersymmetric theory on M can be described in terms of conventional fields coupled to background supergravity, or in terms of twisted fields adapted to the complex geometry of M. Many properties of the theory that are difficult to see in one formulation are simpler in the other one. We use the twisted description to study the dependence of the partition function Z_M on the geometry of M, as well as coupling constants and background gauge fields, recovering and…
The moduli space of toroidal type I vacua, which are consistent at the non-perturbative level, consists of independent branches characterized by the number (0, 16 or 32) of rigid branes sitting on top of orientifold planes. This structure persists also when supersymmetry is spontaneously broken a la Scherk-Schwarz. We show that all the components of the moduli space in dimension $D\ge 5$ indeed admit heterotic dual components, by explicitly constructing heterotic-type I dual pairs with the rank of the gauge group reduced by 0, 8 or 16 units. In the presence of spontaneous breaking of supersymm…
This review is devoted to highlight some aspects of the relevance of Majorana fermions in rigid supersymmetry breaking in four spacetime dimensions. After introducing some basic facts on spinors, and on their symmetries and reality properties, we consider Goldstino actions describing partial breaking of rigid supersymmetry, then focussing on Born-Infeld non-linear theory, its duality symmetry, and its supersymmetric extensions, also including multi-field generalizations exhibiting doubly self-duality.
In these lectures we discuss the supersymmetry algebra and its irreducible representations. We construct the theories of rigid supersymmetry and gave their superspace formulations. The perturbative quantum properties of the extended supersymmetric theories are derived, including the superconformal invariance of a large class of these theories. We also discuss flat directions, non-holomorphicity and the perturbative chiral effective action for N=2 Yang-Mills theory. The superconformal transformations in four dimensional superspace are derived and encoded into one superconformal Killing superfie…
In this note we generalize the methods of [1][2][3] to 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds M. We study the relations between the geometry of M and the number of solutions to a generalized Killing spinor equation obtained from a 5-dimensional supergravity. The existence of 1 pair of solutions is related to almost contact metric structures. We also discuss special cases related to $M = S1 \times M4$, which leads to M being foliated by submanifolds with special properties, such as Quaternion-Kahler. When there are 2 pairs of solutions, the closure of the isometry sub-algebra generated by the solut…
We study partial supersymmetry breaking in effective $\mathcal{N}=2$ U$ \left( 1\right) ^{n}$ gauge theory coupled to complex hypermultiplets by using the method of \textrm{"{\small arXiv:1501.07842}" to which we refer to as ADFT method}. We derive the generalisation of the symplectic invariant ADFT formula $ζ_{a}=\frac{1}{2}\varepsilon _{abc}\left(\mathcal{P}^{bM}\mathcal{C}_{MN}\mathcal{P}^{cN}\right) $ capturing information on partial breaking. Our extension of this anomaly is expressed like $d_{a}=\frac{1}{2}\varepsilon _{abc}\mathbb{P}^{bM}\mathcal{C}_{MN}\mathbb{P}^{cN}+\mathcal{J}_{a}$;…
A renormalizable rigid supersymmetry for the four dimensional antisymmetric tensor field model in a curved space-time background is constructed. A closed algebra between the BRS and the supersymmetry operators is only realizable if the vector parameter of the supersymmetry is a covariantly constant vector field. This also guarantees that the corresponding transformations lead to a genuine symmetry of the model. The proof of the ultraviolet finiteness to all orders of perturbation theory is performed in a pure algebraic manner by using the rigid supersymmetry.
Explicit supersymmetry breaking is studied in higher dimensional theories by having boundaries respect only a subgroup of the bulk symmetry. If the boundary symmetry is the maximal subgroup allowed by the boundary conditions imposed on the fields, then the symmetry can be consistently gauged; otherwise gauging leads to an inconsistent theory. In a warped fifth dimension, an explicit breaking of all bulk supersymmetries by the boundaries is found to be inconsistent with gauging; unlike the case of flat 5D, complete supersymmetry breaking by boundary conditions is not consistent with supergravit…
We give an introduction to rigid supersymmetry, supergravity and superspace by considering a quantum mechanical model. We analyze the constraints in superspace in this simplified model, and compare the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian BRST formalism.
We review the "no-go" theorems that severely constrain the breaking of N=2 supersymmetry to N=1 (both in rigid supersymmetry and supergravity), and we exhibit some models that evade them.

Boundaries in three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories may preserve one half of the original bulk supersymmetry. There are two possibilities which are characterized by the chirality of the leftover supercharges. Depending on the choice, the remaining $2d$ boundary algebra exhibits $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ or $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry. In this work we focus on correlation functions of chiral fields for both types of supersymmetric boundaries. We study a host of correlators using superspace techniques and calculate superconformal blocks for two- and three-point functions. For…
We present an extension of the mass sum rule that applies to renormalizable rigid supersymmetric field theories to the case of the N=1 supersymmetric effective action (the gauged non-linear sigma model) consisting of adjoint scalar superfields and vector superfields possessing a K"ahler potential, a set of gauge coupling functions (second prepotential derivatives) and a superpotential, which respectively set their energy scales. The mass sum rule derived is valid for any vacua, including the (metastable) one of broken supersymmetry with the condensates of D-term and/or F-term. We manage to ext…
We briefly review a construction of N=2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge model in which rigid N=2 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken to N=1. This model generalizes the abelian model considered by Antoniadis, Patouche and Taylor. We discuss the conditions on the vacua of the model with partial supersymmetry breaking.
We discuss a rigid string model proposed by Casalbuoni and Longhi. Constraints for the massive states are solved to find the physical states and the mass spectrum. We also find its supersymmetric extension with the kappa symmetry. The supersymmetry transformations are found starting from on-shell transformations using the Dirac bracket.
The gravitini zero modes riding on top of the extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black-hole solution of N=2 supergravity are shown to be normalizable. The gravitini and dilatini zero modes of axion-dilaton extreme black-hole solutions of N=4 supergravity are also given and found to have finite norms. These norms are duality invariant. The finiteness and positivity of the norms in both cases are found to be correlated with the Witten-Israel-Nester construction; however, we have replaced the Witten condition by the pure-spin-3/2 constraint on the gravitini. We compare our calculation of the norms with t…
We focus on non-linear realizations of local supersymmetry as obtained by using constrained superfields in supergravity. New constraints, beyond those of rigid supersymmetry, are obtained whenever curvature multiplets are affected as well as higher derivative interactions are introduced. In particular, a new constraint, which removes a very massive gravitino is introduced, and in the rigid limit it merely reduces to an explicit supersymmetry breaking. Higher curvature supergravities free of ghosts and instabilities are also obtained in this way. Finally, we consider direct coupling of the gold…
It has recently been demonstrated that protected supersymmetry emerges on the boundaries of one-dimensional intrinsically fermionic symmetry protected trivial (SPT) phases. Here we investigate the boundary supersymmetry of one-dimensional fermionic phases beyond SPT phases. Using the connection between Majorana edge modes and real supercharges, we compute, in terms of the bulk phase invariants, the number of protected boundary supercharges.
We consider rigid supersymmetric theories in four-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. We build the Lagrangian directly in Euclidean signature from the outset, keeping track of potential boundary terms. We reformulate the conditions for supersymmetry as a set of conditions on the torsion classes of a suitable SU(2) or trivial G-structure. We illustrate the formalism with a number of examples including supersymmetric backgrounds with non-vanishing Weyl tensor.
The AdS/CFT correspondence of elementary string theory has been recently suggested as a ``microscopic'' approach to QCD string theory in various dimensions. We use the microscopic theory to show that the ultraviolet regime on the string world-sheet is mapped to the ultraviolet effects in QCD. In the case of QCD_2, a world-sheet path integral representation of QCD strings is known, in terms of a topological rigid string theory whose world-sheet supersymmetry is reminiscent of Parisi-Sourlas supersymmetry. We conjecture that the supersymmetric rigid string theory is dual to the elementary Type I…
In this article we consider the Casimir energy and force of massless Majorana fermions and vector bosons between parallel plates. The vector bosons satisfy perfect electric conductor boundary conditions while the Majorana fermions satisfy bag and chiral boundary conditions. We consider various piston configurations containing one vector boson and one fermion. We present a new regularization mechanism the piston offers. In our case regularization occurs explicitly at the Casimir energy density and not at the Casimir force level, as in usual pistons. We make use of boundary broken supersymmetry …
We show that rigid supersymmetry theories in four dimensions can be extended to give supersymmetric trace (or generalized quantum) dynamics theories, in which the supersymmetry algebra is represented by the generalized Poisson bracket of trace supercharges, constructed from fields that form a trace class noncommutative graded operator algebra. In particular, supersymmetry theories can be turned into supersymmetric matrix models this way. We demonstrate our results by detailed component field calculations for the Wess-Zumino and the supersymmetric Yang-Mills models (the latter with axial gauge …
The multi-vector generalization of a rigid, partially-broken $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory is presented as a rigid limit of a suitable gauged $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity with electric, magnetic charges and antisymmetric tensor fields. This on the one hand generalizes a known result by Ferrara, Girardello and Porrati while on the other hand allows to recover the multi-vector BI models from $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity as the end-point of a hierarchical limit in which the Planck mass first and then the supersymmetry breaking scale are sent to infinity. We define, in the parent supergrav…
We derive a complete pure de Sitter supergravity action with non-linearly realized supersymmetry and its rigid limit, the Volkov-Akulov action, from the corresponding models with linear supersymmetry, by computing the path integral in the limit of infinite sgoldstino mass. In this, we use a non-Gaussian functional integration formula that was recently discovered in a derivation of de Sitter supergravity from the superconformal theory. We also present explicit examples of pure dS supergravity and the case with one matter multiplet. These two simple examples serve as a test and a demo of the uni…
We construct integrability preserving boundary conditions for Green-Schwarz sigma-models on semi-symmetric spaces. The boundary conditions are expressed as gluing conditions of the flat-connection, using an involutive metric preserving automorphism. We show that the boundary conditions preserve half of the space-time supersymmetry and an infinite set of conserved charges. We find integrable D-brane configurations for AdS_5 x S^5 and AdS_4 x CP^3 backgrounds.
We study curved-space rigid supersymmetry for two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric fields theories with a vector-like $R$-symmetry by coupling such theories to background supergravity. The associated Killing spinors can be viewed as holomorphic sections of particular complex line bundles over Euclidean space-time, which severely restrict the allowed supersymmetric couplings on compact orientable Riemann surfaces without boundaries. For genus $g>1$, the only consistent non-singular couplings are the ones dictated by the topological $A$-twist. On spaces with $S^2$ topology, there e…
We consider the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry in five dimensional supergravity with boundaries where the supersymmetry breaking mechanism is provided by the even part of the bulk prepotential. The supersymmetric action comprises boundary brane terms with detuned tensions. The two branes have opposite tensions. We analyse the possible vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry. A class of solutions corresponds to rotated branes in an $AdS_5$ bulk. In particular parallel branes which are rotated with respect to the bulk preserve 1/4 of supersymmetry. We analyse more general vacua usin…
In rigid supersymmetry, generic models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking contain a light Goldstone boson, called the R axion. We show that supergravity effects explicitly break the R symmetry and give mass to the R axion. For visible and renormalizable hidden sector models, the massive R axion is free from astrophysical and cosmological problems. For nonrenormalizable hidden sector models, the R axion suffers from cosmological difficulties similar to those of the moduli fields in string theory.
Theories with 3D $\mathcal{N}=2$ bulk supersymmetry may preserve a 2D $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ subalgebra when a boundary is introduced, possibly with localized degrees of freedom. We propose generalized supercurrent multiplets with bulk and boundary parts adapted to such setups. Using their structure, we comment on implications for the $\overline{Q}_+$-cohomology. As an example, we apply the developed framework to Landau-Ginzburg models. In these models, we study the role of boundary degrees of freedom and matrix factorizations. We verify our results using quantization.
In this note we construct rigidly supersymmetric gauged sigma models and gauge theories on certain Einstein four-manifolds, and discuss constraints on these theories. In work elsewhere, it was recently shown that on some nontrivial Einstein four-manifolds such as AdS$_4$, N=1 rigidly supersymmetric sigma models are constrained to have target spaces with exact Kähler forms. Similarly, in gauged sigma models and gauge theories, we find that supersymmetry imposes constraints on Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters, which have the effect of enforcing that Kähler forms on quotient spaces be exact. We also d…
The partial spontaneous breaking of rigid N=2 supersymmetry implies the existence of a massless N=1 Goldstone multiplet. In this paper we show that the spin-(1/2,1) Maxwell multiplet can play this role. We construct its full nonlinear transformation law and find the invariant Goldstone action. The spin-1 piece of the action turns out to be of Born-Infeld type, and the full superfield action is duality invariant. This leads us to conclude that the Goldstone multiplet can be associated with a D-brane solution of superstring theory for p=3. In addition, we find that N=1 chirality is preserved in …
We study four-dimensional superconformal field theories coupled to three-dimensional superconformal boundary or defect degrees of freedom. Starting with bulk N=2, d=4 theories, we construct abelian models preserving N=2, d=3 supersymmetry and the conformal symmetries under which the boundary/defect is invariant. We write the action, including the bulk terms, in N=2, d=3 superspace. Moreover we derive Callan-Symanzik equations for these models using their superconformal transformation properties and show that the beta functions vanish to all orders in perturbation theory, such that the models r…
In this note, we gauge the rigid vectorial supersymmetry of the two-dimensional Poisson sigma model presented in arXiv:1503.05625. We show that the consistency of the construction does not impose any further constraints on the differential Poisson algebra geometry than those required for the ungauged model. We conclude by proposing that the gauged model provides a first-quantized framework for higher spin gravity.
This review is devoted to some aspects of non-linear Supersymmetry in four dimensions that can be efficiently described via nilpotent superfields, in both rigid and curved Superspace. Our focus is mainly on the partial breaking of rigid $N=2$ Supersymmetry and on a class of generalized Born-Infeld systems that originate from Special Geometry and on some prototype cosmological models, starting from the Supergravity embedding of Starobinsky inflation. However, as an aside we also review briefly some interesting two-field extensions of the Born-Infeld Lagrangian whose field equations enjoy extend…
We show that a quantum-mechanical N=2 supersymmetry is hidden in 4d mass spectrum of any gauge invariant theories with extra dimensions. The N=2 supercharges are explicitly constructed in terms of differential forms. The analysis can be extended to extra dimensions with boundaries, and for a single extra dimension we clarify a possible set of boundary conditions consistent with 5d gauge invariance, although some of the boundary conditions break 4d gauge symmetries.

Holographic renormalization is a systematic procedure for regulating divergences in observables in asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. For dual boundary field theories which are supersymmetric it is natural to ask whether this defines a supersymmetric renormalization scheme. Recent results in localization have brought this question into sharp focus: rigid supersymmetry on a curved boundary requires specific geometric structures, and general arguments imply that BPS observables, such as the partition function, are invariant under certain deformations of these structures. One can then ask if …
We have constructed a complete action for the system of N D0-branes in flat 10D type IIA superspace. It is invariant under the rigid spacetime supersymmetry and local worldline supersymmetry ($κ$-symmetry). This latter can be considered as supersymmetry of maximal 1d SU(N) SYM model which is made local by coupling to supergravity induced by embedding of the center of energy worldline into the target superspace. The spinor moving frame technique is essentially used to achieve such a coupling. We discuss the differences with Panda-Sorokin multiple 0-brane action and with the dimensionally reduce…
The N = 1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action is known to describe the vector Goldstone multiplet for partially broken N = 2 rigid supersymmetry, and this model is believed to be unique. However, it can be deformed by adding the Fayet-Iliopoulos term without losing the second nonlinearly realized supersymmetry. Although the first supersymmetry then becomes spontaneously broken, the deformed action still describes partial N = 2 to N = 1 supersymmetry breaking. The unbroken supercharges in this theory correspond to a different choice of N = 1 subspace in the N = 2 superspace, as compared with the …
We deconstruct 16 rigid supersymmetry variations for M5 brane on $\mb{R}^{1,2}\times (S^3/{\mb{Z}_k})$ and obtain on-shell closure on Lie derivatives. Dimensional reduction on the Hopf fiber by taking $k\rightarrow \infty$ gives sYM on ${\mb{R}}^{1,2} \times S^2$ with 8 rigid supersymmetries. We reproduce the result in arXiv:0908.3263 but we also derive an additional graviphoton term which is associated with the twisting of the Hopf bundle.
We study two-dimensional supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models with boundaries. We derive the most general family of boundary conditions in the non-supersymmetric case. Next we show that no further conditions arise when passing to the N=1 model. We present a manifest N=1 off-shell formulation. The analysis is greatly simplified compared to previous studies and there is no need to introduce non-local superspaces nor to go (partially) on-shell. Whether or not torsion is present does not modify the discussion. Subsequently, we determine under which conditions a second supersymmetry exists. As fo…
In this paper we will analyse a system of multiple M2-branes in between two M5-branes. This will be analysed by studying Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory on a manifold with two boundaries. The original BLG theory will be modified to make it gauge and supersymmetric invariant in presence of the boundaries. However, this modified theory will only preserve half the supersymmetry of the original theory. We will also analyse the deformation of this theory caused by noncommutativity between Grassman coordinates and spacetime coordinates. Finally, we will analyse the Higgsing of this theory to …
We study breaking and restoration of supersymmetry in five-dimensional theories by determining the mass spectrum of fermions from their equations of motion. Boundary conditions can be obtained from either the action principle by extremizing an appropriate boundary action (interval approach) or by assigning parities to the fields (orbifold approach). In the former, fields extend continuously from the bulk to the boundaries, while in the latter the presence of brane mass-terms cause fields to jump when one moves across the branes. We compare the two approaches and in particular we carefully comp…
