We present a detailed three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation describing the inner region of a disk accreting onto a black hole. To avoid the technical complications of general relativity, the dynamics are treated in Newtonian fashion using the pseudo-Newtonian Paczýnski-Wiita potential. The disk evolves due to angular momentum transport which is produced naturally from MHD turbulence generated by the magnetorotational instability. We model the variability profiles of millisecond period X-ray pulsars. We performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of disk accretion to millisecond period neutron stars with a misaligned magnetic dipole moment, using the pseudo-Newtonian Paczynski-Wiita potential to model general relativistic effects. We found that the shapes of the resulting funnel streams of accreting matter and the hot spots on the surface of the star are quite similar to those for more slowly rotating stars obtained from earlier simulations using the Newtonian potential. Using relativistic, steady, axisymmetric, ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) we analyze the super-Alfvenic regime of a pulsar wind by means of solving the momentum equation along the flow as well as in the transfield direction. Employing a self-similar model, we demonstrate that ideal MHD can account for the full acceleration from high (>>1) to low (<<1) values of $σ$, the Poynting-to-matter energy flux ratio. We present a second-order Godunov algorithm for multidimensional, ideal MHD. Our algorithm is based on the unsplit formulation of Colella (J. Comput. Phys. vol. 87, 1990), with all of the primary dependent variables centered at the same location. We study the self-similar collapse of an isothermal magnetized rotating cloud in the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) regime. In the limit of small distance from the accreting protostar we find an analytic solution that corresponds to free-fall onto a central mass point. In this paper we examine various issues closely related to the ongoing discussion on the nature of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism of extraction of rotational energy of black holes. In particular, we show that switch-on and switch-off shocks are allowed by the shock equations of relativistic MHD and have similar properties to their Newtonian counterparts. Just like in Newtonian MHD they are limits of fast and slow shock solutions and as such they may be classified as weakly evolutionary shocks. These simulations, performed in a 2.5 dimensional time-dependent polytropic resistive MHD framework, model a resistive accretion disk threaded by an initial vertical magnetic field. This paper presents both rigorous results and physical theory on the breakdown of magnetic flux conservation for ideal plasmas, by nonlinear effects. Our analysis is based upon an effective equation for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes at length-scales $>\ell,$ with smaller scales eliminated, as in renormalization-group methodology.
