The field induced switching of conductance in the charge ordered half-doped manganites is controlled by the combination of metastability, an inhomogeneous high field state, and cation disorder. We study this non-equilibrium problem via real space Monte Carlo on a disordered strong coupling model appropriate to the manganites. We reproduce the variation of the switching fields with the mean ionic radius r_A and cation disorder σ_A, and demonstrate how the experimental features arise from the proximity of several phases in the Landau free energy landscape. Our prediction for the field melted state is consistent with a growing body of experimental evidence.
We study the effect of A site disorder on magnetic field induced melting of charge order (CO) in half doped manganites using a Monte-Carlo technique. Strong A-site disorder destroys CO even without an applied field. At moderate disorder, the zero field CO state survives but has several intriguing features in its field response. Our spatially resolved results track the broadening of the field melting transition due to disorder and explain the unusual dependence of the melting scales on bandwidth and disorder. In combination with our companion paper on field melting of charge order in clean syst…
We study the mechanism of orbital-order melting observed at temperature T_OO in the series of rare-earth manganites. We find that many-body super-exchange yields a transition-temperature T_KK that decreases with decreasing rare-earth radius, and increases with pressure, opposite to the experimental T_OO. We show that the tetragonal crystal-field splitting reduces T_KK further increasing the discrepancies with experiments. This proves that super-exchange effects, although very efficient, in the light of the experimentally observed trends, play a minor role for the melting of orbital ordering in…
We study the melting of charge order in the half doped manganites using a model that incorporates double exchange, antiferromagnetic superexchange, and Jahn-Teller coupling between electrons and phonons. We primarily use a real space Monte Carlo technique to study the phase diagram in terms of applied field $(h)$ and temperature $(T)$, exploring the melting of charge order with increasing $h$ and its recovery on decreasing $h$. We observe hysteresis in this response, and discover that the `field melted' high conductance state can be spatially inhomogeneous even without extrinsic disorder. The …
The magnetic correlations in the charge- and orbital-ordered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Out of the well-defined CE-type magnetic structure with the corresponding magnons a competition between CE-type and ferromagnetic fluctuations develops. Whereas ferromagnetic correlations are fully suppressed by the static CE-type order at low temperature, elastic and inelastic CE-type correlations disappear with the melting of the charge-orbital order at high temperature. In its charge-orbital disordered phase, La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(…
We observe a disappearance of electron-hole asymmetry in hole and electron doped manganites of composition Pr(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 (x=0.36, 0.64), as reflected in the g-parameter values. The bulk property of opposite g-shifts in room temperature seems to have disappeared in nanoparticles. We analyze the results in the light of ferromagnetic fluctuations and melting of charge order in nanoparticles.
We have studied the effect of electric field on transport properties of the prototypical phase separated manganite La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 with y=0.34. Our results show that the suggested image in which the charge ordered state is melted by the appliance of an electric current and/or voltage has to be revised. We were able to explain the observed resistivity drop in terms of an artifact related to Joule heating and the particular hysteresis that the system under study display, common to many other phase separated manganites.
Photo-excitation in complex oxides1 transfers charge across semicovalent bonds, drastically perturbing spin and orbital orders2. Light may then be used in compounds like magnetoresistive manganites to control magnetism on nanometre lengthscales and ultrafast timescales. Here, we show how ultrafast resonant soft x-ray diffraction can separately probe the photo-induced dynamics of spin and orbital orders in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4. Ultrafast melting of CE antiferromagnetic spin order is evidenced by the disappearance of a (1/4,1/4,1/2) diffraction peak. On the other hand the (1/4,1/4,0) peak, reflecting …
We employ time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction to study the melting of charge order and the associated insulator-metal transition in the doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ after resonant excitation of a high-frequency infrared-active lattice mode. We find that the charge order reduces promptly and highly nonlinearly as function of excitation fluence. Density functional theory calculations suggest that direct anharmonic coupling between the excited lattice mode and the electronic structure drive these dynamics, highlighting a new avenue of nonlinear phonon control.
Thin films of the half doped manganite Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 were grown on (100) oriented MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. In order to study the effect of strain on the magnetic field induced charge order melting, films of different thicknesses were prepared and their properties were studied by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements. A field induced charge order melting is observed for films with very small thicknesses. The charge order transition temperature and the magnetic filed induced charge order melting are observed to depend on the nat…
Understanding orbital ordered (OO) Mott insulating states lies at the heart of a consistent resolution of the colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) observed in manganites, where its melting induces a low-$T$ insulator-metal transition for $0.25 \le x\le 0.45$. Motivated thereby, we study the OO states in a planar model for bilayer manganites using DMFT and finite-size diagonalisation methods. We derive the correct OO ground states observed in manganites for $x=0,{1/2},{2/3},{3/4}$ in exact agreement with observations, including the charge-orbital-magnetic ordered stripe phases for $x>{1/2}$. These…
We present temperature-dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on $La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MO_{3}$ ($x\sim0.33$) films with different degrees of biaxial strain. A depletion in normalized conductance around the Fermi level is observed both above and below the insulator-to-metal transition temperature $T_{MI}$, for weakly as well as highly-strained films. This pseudogap-like depletion globally narrows on cooling. The zero-bias conductance decreases on cooling in the insulating phase, reaches a minimum close to $T_{MI}$ and increases on cooling in the metallic phase, following the trend of m…
The competition among different phases in perovskite manganites is pronounced since their energies are very close under the interplay of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. To reveal the roles of underlying interactions, many efforts have been devoted towards directly imaging phase transitions at microscopic scales. Here we show images of the charge-ordered insulator (COI) phase transition from a pure ferromagnetic metal with reducing field or increasing temperature in a strained phase-separated manganite film, using a home-built magnetic force microscope. Compared with the C…
The transport and noise properties of Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} epitaxial thin films in the temperature range from room temperature to 160 K are reported. It is shown that both the broadband 1/f noise properties and the dependence of resistance on electric field are consistent with the idea of a collective electrical transport, as in the classical model of sliding charge density waves. On the other hand, the observations cannot be reconciled with standard models of charge ordering and charge melting. Methodologically, it is proposed to consider noise-spectra analysis as a unique tool for the ide…
A-site ordered manganites LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5 and LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 are investigated by x-ray full-profile diffraction and Moessbauer spectroscopy. Powder samples were oriented with preferred orientation of platy crystallites in the plane of sample surface. March-Dollase function of preferred orientation was employed in analysing both the Rietveld patterns and the Mossbauer spectra. Combined effects of preffered orientation and vibrational anisotropy on the line area asymmetry of Mossbauer doublet are analysed. Constructive and destructive interference between the effects of texture and vibrat…
Transport and Conductance spectra measurements of ramp-type junctions made of cuprate superconducting $La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_4$ electrodes and a manganite ferromagnetic $La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ barrier are reported. At low temperatures below $T_c$, the conductance spectra show Andreev-like broad peaks superposed on a tunneling-like background, and sometimes also sub-gap Andreev resonances. The energy gap values $Δ$ found from fits of the data ranged mostly between 7-10 mV. As usual, the gap features were suppressed under magnetic fields but revealed the tunneling-like conductance background. Af…
We report on the pressure effects on the orbital polaron lattice in the lightly doped manganites $\mathrm{La_{1-x}Sr_xMnO_{3}}$, with $x\sim 1/8$. The dependence of the orbital polaron lattice on $negative$ chemical pressure is studied by substituting Pr for La in $\mathrm{(La_{1-y}Pr_y)_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_{3}}$. In addition, we have studied its hydrostatic pressure dependence in $\mathrm{(La_{0.9}Pr_{0.1})_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_{3}}$. Our results strongly indicate that the hopping $t$ significantly contributes to the stabilization of the orbital polaron lattice and that the orbital polarons are ferr…
The phase equilibrium in manganites under magnetic field is studied using a two orbital model, based on the equivalent chemical potential principle for the competitive phases. We focus on the magnetic field induced melting process of CE phase in half-doped manganites. It is predicted that the homogenous CE phase begins to decompose into coexisting ferromagnetic phase and CE phase once the magnetic field exceeds the threshold field. In a more quantitative way, the volume fractions of the two competitive phases in the phase separation regime are evaluated.
Spontaneous C4-symmetry breaking phases are ubiquitous in layered quantum materials, and often compete with other phases such as superconductivity. Preferential suppression of the symmetry broken phases by light has been used to explain non-equilibrium light induced superconductivity, metallicity, and the creation of metastable states. Key to understanding how these phases emerge is understanding how C4 symmetry is restored. A leading approach is based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, which explains the coherence response seen in many systems. However, we show that, for the case of th…
The physics of manganites appears to be dominated by phase competition among ferromagnetic metallic and charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulating states. Previous investigations (Burgy {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 277202 (2001)) have shown that quenched disorder is important to smear the first-order transition between those competing states, and induce nanoscale inhomogeneities that produce the colossal magnetoresistance effect. Recent studies (Motome {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 167204 (2003)) have provided further evidence that disorder is important in the manganite …
We investigated the temperature ($T=$ 15 $\sim $ 290 K) and the magnetic field ($H=$ 0 $\sim $ 17 T) dependent optical conductivity spectra of a charge/orbital ordered manganite, Nd$_{1/2}$Sr$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$. With variation of $T$ and $H$, large spectral weight changes were observed up to 4.0 eV. These spectral weight changes could be explained using the polaron picture. Interestingly, our results suggested that some local ordered state might remain above the charge ordering temperature, and that the charge/orbital melted state at a high magnetic field (i.e. at $H=$ 17 T and $% T=$ 4.2 K) shoul…
The gigantic decrease of resistance by an applied magnetic field, which is often referred to as colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), has been an attracting phenomenon in strongly correlated electron systems. The discovery of CMR in manganese oxide compounds has developed the science of strong coupling among charge, orbital, and spin degrees of freedom. CMR is also attracting scientists from the viewpoint of possible applications to sensors, memories, and so on. However, no application using CMR effect has been achieved so far, partly because the CMR materials which satisfy all of the required con…
Spatially resolved tunneling spectroscopic studies of colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite $\rm La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ (LCMO) epitaxial films on $\rm (LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}$ substrate are investigated as functions of temperature, magnetic field and spin polarization by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Systematic surveys of the tunneling spectra taken with Pt/Ir tips reveal spatial variations on the length scale of a few hundred nanometers in the ferromagnetic state, which may be attributed to the intrinsic heterogeneity of the manganites due to their tendency towards …
We consider temperature-induced melting of a Wigner solid in one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) lattices of electrons interacting via the long-range Coulomb interaction in the presence of strong disorder arising from charged impurities in the system. The system simulates semiconductor-based 2D electron layers where Wigner crystallization is often claimed to be observed experimentally. Using exact diagonalization and utilizing the inverse participation ratio as well as conductance to distinguish between the localized insulating solid phase and the extended metallic liquid phase, we f…
We perform density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations to investi- gate internal charge transfer in an artificial superlattice composed of alternating layers of vanadate and manganite perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper structure materials. We show that the elec- tronegativity difference between vanadium and manganese causes moderate charge transfer from VO2 to MnO2 layers in both perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper based superlattices, leading to hole doping of the VO2 layer and electron doping of the MnO2 layer. Comparison of the perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper based h…
The metal-insulator transition, and the associated magnetic transition, in the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) regime of the one-orbital model for manganites is here studied using Monte Carlo (MC) techniques. Both cooperative oxygen lattice distortions and a finite superexchange coupling among the $t_{\rm 2g}$ spins are included in our investigations. Charge and spin correlations are studied. In the CMR regime, a strong competition between the ferromagnetic metallic and antiferromagnetic charge-ordered insulating states is observed. This competition is shown to be important to understand the …
Transition metal oxides hold great potential for the development of new device paradigms because of the field-tunable functionalities driven by their strong electronic correlations, combined with their earth abundance and environmental friendliness. Recently, the interfaces between transition-metal oxides have revealed striking phenomena such as insulator-metal transitions, magnetism, magnetoresistance, and superconductivity. Such oxide interfaces are usually produced by sophisticated layer-by-layer growth techniques, which can yield high quality, epitaxial interfaces with almost monolayer con…
We report a complete multicomponent mean-field-theory for the coexistence and competition of charge ordering (CO), antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin ordering in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Doping the AFM or CO state always generates a ferromagnetic component. Itinerant FM, AFM and CO, necessarily coexist and compete in a particle-hole asymmetric system. Melting of large AFM-CO orders by small magnetic fields and the related phenomenon of Colossal Magnetoresistance (CMR) may arise whenever the CO and AFM order parameters have similar magnitude and momentum struct…
