The time evolution of plane waves in the presence of a 1-dimensional square quantum barrier is considered. Comparison is made between the cases of an infinite and a cut-off (shutter) initial plane wave. The difference is relevant when the results are applied to the analysis of the tunnelling regime. This work is focused on the analytical calculation of the time-evolved solution and highlights the contribution of the resonant (Gamow) states.

Recent studies of the tunnelling through two opaque barriers claim that the transit time is independent of the barrier widths and of the separation distance between the barriers. We observe, in contrast, that if multiple reflections are allowed for correctly (infinite peaks) the transit time between the barriers appears exactly as expected.
In this paper we calculate the analytic expression of the phase time for the scattering of an electron off a complex square barrier. As is well known the (negative) imaginary part of the potential takes into account, phenomenologically, the absorption. We investigate the so-called Hartman-Fletcher effect, and find that it is suppressed by the presence of a (not negligible) imaginary potential. In this paper, the tunnelling of a particle through a potential barrier is investigated in the presence of a time-dependent perturbation. The latter is attributed to the process of the energy measurement of the scattered particle. The time-dependent Schrodinger equation of the model is exactly solved. The calculation of the probability density inside the barrier proves that the tunnelling dynamics is determined not only by the transmitted and reflected waves but also by their interference. We exploit the analogy between tunnelling across a potential barrier and Aharonov's weak measurements to resolve the long standing paradox between the impossibility to exceed the speed of light and the seemingly 'superluminal' behaviur of the tunnelling particle in the barrier. We demonstrate that 'superluminality' occurs when the value of the duration $τ$ spent in the barrier is uncertain, whereas when $τ$ is known accurately, no 'superluminal' behaviur is observed. We show that a short-range strong repulsive (contact) interaction between the particles in the barrier may change the statistics of two-particle tunnelling. In the case of a resonance of a width $Γ$, the effect would be observed if the time between the two impacts is of order of $\hbar/Γ$. The statistics of non-resonance tunnelling across a broad potential barrier remain unaffected, which suggests that there is no appreciable delay in the classically forbidden region.

We analyse a little known aspect of the Klein paradox. A Klein-Gordon boson appears to be able to cross a supercritical rectangular barrier without being reflected, while spending there a negative amount of time. The transmission mechanism is demonstrably acausal, yet an attempt to construct the corresponding causal solution of the Klein-Gordon equation fails. The Klein paradox is reassessed by considering the properties of a finite square well or barrier in the Dirac equation. It is shown that spontaneous positron emission occurs for a well if the potential is strong enough. The vacuum charge and lifetime of the well are estimated. If the well is wide enough, a seemingly constant current is emitted. These phenomena are transient whereas the tunnelling first calculated by Klein is time-independent. In quantum tunnelling, what appears an infinitely fast barrier traversal can be explained in terms of an Aharonov-like weak measurement of the tunnelling time, in which the role of the pointer is played by the particle's own coordinate. A relativistic wavepacket is shown to be reshaped through a series of subluminal shifts which together produce an anomalous 'superluminal' result.
The particle approach to one-dimensional potential scattering is applied to non relativistic tunnelling between two, three and four identical barriers. We demonstrate as expected that the infinite sum of particle contributions yield the plane wave results. In particular, the existence of resonance/transparency for twin tunnelling in the wave limit is immediately obvious. The known resonances for three and four barriers are also derived. The transition from the wave limit to the particle limit is exhibit numerically.
Efficient quantum-state transfer is achieved in a uniformly coupled spin-1/2 chain, with open boundaries, by application of local magnetic fields on the second and last-but-one spins, respectively. These effective \textit{barriers} induce appearance of two eigenstates, bi-localized at the edges of the chain, which allow a high quality transfer also at relatively long distances. The same mechanism may be used to send an entire e-bit (e.g., an entangled qubit pair) from one to the other end of the chain.
We analyse tunnelling of a single particle, whose initial state is given by a superposition of spatially separated wave packet modes. It is shown that "pile up" of different components the scatterer may change the tunnelling probabilities, making such states a convenient tool for probing the barrier's scattering times. Interference effects arising in resonance tunnelling in are studied in detail. The analysis allows us to gain further insight into the origin of interference effects in scattering of several identical particles.
The early papers by Klein, Sauter and Hund which investigate scattering off a high step potential in the context of the Dirac equation are discussed to derive the 'paradox' first obtained by Klein. We study beams of medium-energy electrons and positrons which obey the Dirac equation and scatter from nuclei with $Z > 100.$ At small distances the potential is modelled to be that of a charged sphere. A large peak is found in the probability of positron penetration to the origin for $Z \approx 184.$ This may be understood as an example of Klein tunnelling through the Coulomb barrier: it is the analogue of the Klein Paradox for the Coulomb potential.

We consider tunnelling of a non-relativistic particle across a potential barrier. It is shown that the barrier acts as an effective beam splitter which builds up the transmitted pulse from the copies of the initial envelope shifted in the coordinate space backwards relative to the free propagation. It is shown that the Hartman-Fletcher effect is valid for all the known expressions of the mean tunnelling time, in various nonrelativistic approaches, for the case of finite width barriers without absorption. Then, we show that the same effect is not valid for the tunnelling time mean-square fluctuations. On the basis of the Hartman-Fletcher effect and the known analogy between photon and nonrelativistic-particle tunnelling, one can explain the Superluminal group-velocities observed in various photon tunnelling experiments (without violation of the so-called "Einstein causality").

We study the phenomenon of one-dimensional non-resonant tunnelling through two successive potential barriers, separated by an intermediate free region R, by analyzing the relevant solutions to the Schroedinger equation. We describe a series of atom optics experiments underway at Toronto for investigating tunnelling interaction times of various sorts. We begin by discussing some outstanding issues and confusions related to the question of whether or not superluminal tunnelling can be construed as true faster-than-light ``signal propagation,'' a question which we answer in the negative. We show that in wavepacket tunnelling localisation of the transmitted particle amounts to a quantum measurement of the delay it experiences in the barrier. With no external degree of freedom involved, the envelope of the wavepacket plays the role of the initial pointer state. Under tunnelling conditions such 'self measurement' is necessarily weak, and the Hartman effect just reflects the general tendency of weak values to diverge, as post-selection in the final state becomes improbable. Penetration of two coupled particles through a repulsive barrier is considered. A simple mechanism of the appearance of barrier resonances is demonstrated that makes the barrier anomalously transparent as compared to the probability of penetration of structureless objects. It is indicated that the probabilities of tunnelling of two interacting particles from a false vacuum can be considerably larger than it was assumed earlier.
The collision of a quantum Gaussian wave packet with a square barrier is solved explicitly in terms of known functions. The obtained formula is suitable for performing fast calculations or asymptotic analysis. We consider photonic tunnelling through evanescent regions and obtain general analytic expressions for the transit (phase) time $τ$ (in the opaque barrier limit) in order to study the recently proposed ``universality'' property according to which $τ$ is given by the reciprocal of the photon frequency. We study both classical and quantum algorithms to solve a hard optimization problem, namely 3-XORSAT on 3-regular random graphs. By introducing a new quasi-greedy algorithm that is not allowed to jump over large energy barriers, we show that the problem hardness is mainly due to entropic barriers. We study, both analytically and numerically, several optimization algorithms, finding that entropic barriers affect in a similar way classical local algorithms and quantum annealing. It is a commonplace to claim that quantum mechanics supports the old idea that a tree falling in a forest makes no sound unless there is a listener present. In fact, this conclusion is far from obvious. Furthermore, if a tunnelling particle is observed in the barrier region, it collapses to a state in which it is no longer tunnelling. The tunneling rate is calculated exactly for a potential mimicking a constant electric field with arbitrary time dependence. The pole spectrum of the barriers determines the decay time. The tunneling probability is enhanced by the perturbation. The results are exemplified for a simplified model of nuclear $\ds α$ decay.

We study an anti-symmetric (square) well and barrier potential of depth/height $(V_0)$ placed between two rigid walls.
