We present a global analysis of leptonic and semileptonic kaon decays data, including all recent results by BNL-E865, KLOE, KTeV, ISTRA+, and NA48. Experimental results are critically reviewed and combined, taking into account theoretical (both analytical and numerical) constraints on the semileptonic kaon form factors. This analysis leads to a very accurate determination of Vus and allows us to perform several stringent tests of the Standard Model.
We make predictions for the exclusive semileptonic and the non-leptonic decay widths of the B_c meson. We evaluate the B_c semileptonic form factors for different decay channels in a relativistic model, and use factorization to obtain the non-leptonic decay widths.
We summarize the status of semileptonic and leptonic $B$ decays, including $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ exclusive and inclusive determinations, decays to excited states of the charm meson spectrum and decays into $τ$ leptons.
We present the matrix elements for the semileptonic kaon decays $K_{l2γ}$, $K_{l2l^+l^-}$, $K_{l2l'^+l'^-}$, $K_{l3}$, $K_{l3γ}$ and $K_{l4}$ at next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory and compare the predictions with experimental data. Monte Carlo event generators are used to calculate the corresponding rates at DAFNE. We discuss the possibilities to improve our knowledge of the low-energy structure of the Standard Model at this and similar machines.
We employ the relativistic constituent quark model to give a unified description of the leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons (π, K, D, D_s, B, B_s). The calculated leptonic decay constants and form factors are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data and other approaches. We reproduce the results of spin-flavor symmetry in the heavy quark limit.
We evaluate the matrix elements for the radiative kaon decays $K^+ \to l^+ν_lγ$, $l^+ ν_l l'^+ l'^-$ and $K \to πl ν_lγ$ \ ($l,\ l' = e,μ$) to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. We calculate total rates and rates with several kinematical cuts and confront the results with existing data. Measurements at future kaon facilities will allow for a more detailed comparison between theory and experiment.
We investigate the kaon semileptonic decay (K_{l3}) form factors within the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model from the instanton vacuum, taking into account the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking. All theoretical calculations are carried out without any adjustable parameter. We also show that the present results satisfy the Callan-Treiman low-energy theorem as well as the Ademollo-Gatto theorem. It turns out that the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking are essential in reproducing the kaon semileptonic form factors. The present results are in a good agreement with exper…
We study the forward-backward and the CP-violating asymmetries (both time-independent and time-dependent) in rare semileptonic and radiative leptonic B_{d,s}-decays and investigate the sensitivity of these asymmetries to the extensions of the Standard model.
The status of lattice calculations of heavy quark phenomenology is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the understanding and control of the calculational uncertainties. The ensuing implications for constraining the CKM matrix elements are discussed.
A calculation of the semi--leptonic decays of the kaon ($K_{l3}$) is presented. The results are direct predictions of a covariant model of the pion and kaon introduced earlier by Ito, Buck, Gross. The weak form factors for $K_{l3}$ are predicted with absolutely no parameter adjustments of the model. We obtained for the form factor parameters: $f_-(q^2=m_l^2)/f_+(q^2=m_l^2)=-0.28$ and $λ_+$= 0.028, both within experimental error bars. Connections of this approach to heavy quark symmetry will also be discussed.
A brief survey of applications of chiral perturbation theory to both semileptonic and nonleptonic kaon decays is presented. Special emphasis is given to recent theoretical advances related to semileptonic decays, in particular pion pion scattering and Ke4 decays. The systematic approach for including isospin violation and electromagnetic corrections in semileptonic decays is discussed for Kl3 decays.
We put constraints on several products of R-parity violating lambda lambda' and lambda' lambda' type couplings from leptonic and semileptonic tau, B_d and B_s decays. Most of them are one to two orders of magnitude better than the existing bounds, and almost free from theoretical uncertainties. A significant improvement of these bounds can be made in high luminosity tau-charm or B factories.
We investigate the kaon semileptonic decay (K_{l3}) form factors within the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model from the instanton vacuum, taking into account the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking. We also consider the problem of gauge invariance arising from the momentum-dependent quark mass in the present work. All theoretical calculations are carried out without any adjustable parameter, the average instanton size (rho ~ 1/3 fm) and the inter-instanton distance (R ~ 1 fm) having been fixed. We also show that the present results satisfy the Callan-Treiman low-energy theorem …
We discuss the possibilities of extracting the constraints on New Physics by using the current data on the leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons. In doing so we use a general low energy Lagrangian that besides the vector and axial operators also includes the (pseudo-)scalar and tensor ones. In obtaining constraints on New Physics couplings we combine the experimental information concerning several decay modes with the accurate lattice QCD results for the hadronic matrix elements. We propose to study new observables that can be extracted from the angular analysis of the semile…
We update the determination of |V_us| using semielectronic and semimuonic decays of K mesons. A modest improvement of 15% with respect to its present value is obtained for the error bar of this matrix element when we combine the four available semileptonic decays. The combined effects of long-distance radiative corrections and nonlinear terms in the vector form factors can decrease the value of |V_us| by up to 1%. Refined measurements of the decay widths and slope form factors in the semimuonic modes and a more accurate calculation of vector form factors at zero momentum transfer can push the …
Large long-distance standard model effects in FCNC semileptonic D decays can make observable these processes in future measurements. Eventual disagreements in this sector and/or the observation of lepton family violating (LFV) D decays would require an explanatio beyond the SM framework. In this paper we confront present experimental data on leptonic and semileptonic FCNC and LFV D meson decays with a version of the two-Higgs doublet model that allows these effects to occur at tree- level. The stringent bounds on the parameters of the model are obtained from D^0 --> l^+l'^- and D --> pi l^+l'^…
We present the matrix elements for the semileptonic kaon decays $K_{l2γ}$ , $K_{l2l^+l^-}$, $K_{l2l'^+l'^-}$,$K_{l3}$, $K_{l3γ}$ and $K_{l4}$ at next-to-leading order, and $K_{e5}$ at leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory and compare the predictions with experimental data. For $K_{l4}$ decays we estimate yet higher orders in order to reduce theoretical uncertainties in the comparison with the data. Monte Carlo event generators are used to calculate the corresponding rates at DA$Φ$NE. We discuss the possibilities to improve our knowledge of the low-energy structure of the Standard Model a…
We investigate to what extent DA$Φ$NE will be able to test the Standard Model in the confinement regime with radiative kaon decays. We concentrate on processes which can be detected at DA$Φ$NE and we review briefly those decays where only upper limits can be expected. The Standard Model predictions for these decays are analyzed in the framework of chiral perturbation theory.
An expression for the Dalitz plot of the semileptonic decay of a charged kaon, including radiative corrections to order O[απ)(q/M_1)], where q is the four-momentum transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying kaon, is obtained. Contributions of both the three- and four-body regions are accounted for. Besides, the emitted muon is considered to be polarized so the analysis is also focused on evaluating the radiative corrections to the longitudinal, transverse, and normal polarization components of the muon. The final formulas, with the triple integration of the bremsstrahlung photon variables re…
Leptonic and semileptonic decays in the charm sector have been well studied in recent years. With the largest data sample near $D\bar D$ threshold, precision measurements of leptonic and semileptonic decays of charm meson and baryon are perfromed at BESIII. Test for letpon flavor universality is also performed. Sensitivity for rare leptonic and semileptonic charm decays is significantly improved taking advantage of the huge statistics in LHCb and the $B$ factories.
It has been known that there exists a disagreement emerged between the determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from inclusive $B \to X_u\ellν$ decays and exclusive $B \to π\ellν$ decays. In order to solve the mismatch, we investigate the left-right (LR) mixing effects, denoted by $ξ_u$, in leptonic and semileptonic $b \to u$ decays. We find that the new interactions $(V+A)\times (V-A)$ induced via the LR mixing can explain the mismatch between the values of $|V_{ub}|$ if Re$(ξ_{u})=-(0.14 \pm 0.12)$. Furthermore, we also find that the LR mixing effects can enhance the branching fractions for $B \to τν$ an…
We address the impact of a modified $W \ell ν$ coupling on a wide range of observables, such as $τ$ leptonic and mesonic decays, leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons, as well as semileptonic meson decays. In particular, we concentrate on deviations from lepton flavour universality, focusing on the ratios $R_{P} = Γ(P \to \ell ν) / Γ(P \to \ell' ν)$, with $P=K, π, D, D_s$, $R(D)={Γ(B^+ \to D τ^+ ν)}/{Γ(B^+ \to D\ell^+ ν)}$, $R τ={Γ(τ\to μνν)}/{Γ(τ\to eνν)}$, $R^{\ell τ}_P=Γ(τ\to Pν)/Γ(P\to \ell ν)$, and $\text{BR}(B \to τν)$. We further consider leptonic gauge boson decays, such as $W\to \ell…
In this paper, we review recent calculations of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ from semileptonic and leptonic decays of $D$ and $D_s$ mesons using lattice QCD methods.
In this talk I describe work on computing non-leptonic matrix elements consistently with both long and short distance contributions included. On the simpler example of the $π^+$-$π^0$ mass difference I explain in detail the matching procedure and the difference between various low-energy models. I then explain the new difficulties in non-leptonic Kaon decays and how the matching here can in principle be done in the same way when scheme dependences are correctly accounted for. In the end I summarize the results J. Prades and I obtain for the $ΔI=1/2$ rule and $B_6$.
We consider the possibility of violations of the selection rule $ΔS=ΔQ$ at an appreciable level in {\it exclusive} semi-leptonic decays of Kaons. At $Φ$-Factories, intense Kaon beams will be available and will probe among others, the semi-leptonic decays $K_{l4}$ and $K_{l3γ}$ in addition to $K_{l3}$ and could provide novel testing grounds for the $ΔS=ΔQ$ rule. In particular, the branching ratio of $K_{l3γ}$ is non-negligible and could be used to probe new phenomena associated with the violation of this selection rule. Furthermore, we modify certain di-lepton event rate ratios and asymmetries …
The recent significant progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides on the study of leptonic and semileptonic kaon decays allows to precisely test the Standard Model. Here we present results for the determination of Vus from experimental data, the comparison between the values of Vus obtained from data on semileptonic and leptonic kaon decays, and tests of lepton universality in semileptonic kaon decays.
We propose a new method to extract $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing parameters using the $D^0 \to \bar{K}{}^0 π^0$ decay with the $\bar{K}{}^0$ reconstructed in the semileptonic mode. Although a $K^0 \to π^\pm l^\mp ν_l$ decay suffers from low statistics and complexity of the secondary vertex reconstruction in comparison to the standard $K_{S} \to π^+ π^-$ vertex, it provides much richer, sometimes unique information about the initial state of a $K^0$-meson produced in a heavy-flavor hadron decay. In this paper it is shown that the reconstruction of the chain $D^0 \to K^0 (π^\pm l^\mp ν_l) π^0$ allows o…
A heavy-quark limit of the Dyson-Schwinger equations is introduced and used in an exploratory study of leptonic and semileptonic decays of heavy mesons. The application of this framework to heavy-to-light semileptonic decays, which require a good knowledge of light-quark propagation characteristics and light-meson bound state amplitudes, is illustrated.
Within the framework of the factorization approximation, two body non-leptonic decays of $B$ mesons are related to semileptonic matrix elements and form factors, evaluated with an effective lagrangian incorporating both chiral and heavy quark symmetries. Using semileptonic $D$-decay data, estimates for nonleptonic processes are obtained.
Rare leptonic kaon and pion decays $K^+(π^+) \to μ^+\, ν_μ\, e^+ e^-$ can be used to probe a dark photon of mass ${\cal O}(10)$~MeV, with the background coming from the mediation of a virtual photon. This is most relevant for the 16.7-MeV dark photon proposed to explain a 6.8$σ$ anomaly recently observed in $^8$Be transitions by the Atomki Collaboration. We evaluate the reach of future experiments for different scenarios of how the dark photon couples with the standard model particles, and show that a great portion of the preferred 16.7-MeV dark photon parameter space can be decisively probed.…
An investigation is performed of all non-leptonic kaon decays sensitive to the chiral anomaly. Within the framework of chiral perturbation theory, there are two classes of anomalous amplitudes at $O(p^4)$: reducible and direct contributions. Only radiative transitions are affected by the anomaly. The phenomenology of the decays $K_L \to π^+ π^- γ$ and $K^+ \to π^+ π^0 γ$ is studied in detail. Including the dominant contributions of $O(p^6)$, the experimentally observed dependence of the direct emission amplitude for $K_L \to π^+ π^- γ$ on the photon energy can be understood. A survey is made o…
In the chiral limit, the $D=6$ contribution to the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) of the $\mathrm{VV-AA}$ correlator of quark currents only depends on two vacuum condensates, which can be related to hadronic matrix elements associated to CP violation in non-leptonic kaon decays. We use those relations to determine $\langle(ππ)_{I=2}|\mathcal{Q}_{8}|K\rangle$, using the updated ALEPH spectral functions. Alternatively, we use those relations in the opposite direction. Taking the values of the matrix elements from the lattice to obtain the $D=6$ vacuum elements provides a new short-distance con…
A summary of WG II of the CKM 2018 conference on semileptonic and leptonic $b$-hadron decays is presented. This includes discussions on the CKM matrix element magitudes $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, lepton universality tests such as $R(D^{*})$ and leptonic decays. As is usual for semileptonic and leptonic decays, much discussion is devoted towards the interplay between theoretical QCD calculations and the experimental measurements.
We present a global analysis of leptonic and semileptonic kaon decay data, including all recent results published by the BNL-E865, KLOE, KTeV, ISTRA+ and NA48 experiments. This analysis, in conjunction with precise lattice calculations of the hadronic matrix elements now available, leads to a very precise determination of |Vus| and allows us to perform several stringent tests of the Standard Model.
The weak leptonic decays $π^\pm\toμ^\pmν_μ(\barν_μ), π^\pm\to e^\pmν_e(\barν_{e}), K^\pm\toμ^\pmν_μ(\barν_μ)$ and $K^\pm\to e^\pm ν_e(\barν_{e})$ are investigated within the framework of the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, in the vacuum and in quark matter in $β$ equilibrium. It is found that, at low densities, the decay rates of the charge multiplets, that are decoupled in this kind of flavor asymmetric matter, are affected differently. As the density increases, these decay rates become closer and show a tendency to vanish. This shows that weak interactions are strongly influenced by the medi…
A relativistic constituent quark model is adopted to give an unified description of the leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons (π, K, D, D_s, B, B_s). The calculated leptonic decay constants and form factors are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data and the results of other approaches. Eventually, the model is found to reproduce the scaling behaviours of spin-flavor symmetry in the heavy-quark limit.
We review the experimental measurements and theoretical descriptions of leptonic and semileptonic decays of particles containing a single heavy quark, either charm or bottom. Measurements of bottom semileptonic decays are used to determine the magnitudes of two fundamental parameters of the standard model, the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements $V_{cb}$ and $V_{ub}$. These parameters are connected with the physics of quark flavor and mass, and they have important implications for the breakdown of CP symmetry. To extract precise values of $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ from measurements, howe…
In lattice QCD, obtaining properties of heavy-light mesons has been easier said than done. Focusing on the $B$ meson's decay constant, it is argued that towards the end of 1997 the last obstacles were removed, at least in the quenched approximation. These developments, which resulted from a fuller understanding and implementation of ideas in effective field theory, bode well for current studies of neutral meson mixing and of semileptonic decays.
We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factors in lattice QCD with three flavors of dynamical overlap quarks. Gauge ensembles are generated at pion masses as low as 290 MeV and at a strange quark mass near its physical value. We precisely calculate relevant meson correlators using the all-to-all quark propagator. Twisted boundary conditions and the reweighting technique are employed to vary the momentum transfer and the strange quark mass. We discuss the chiral behavior of the form factors by comparing with chiral perturbation theory and experiments.
We consider the axial-vector mesons $K_1(1270)$ and $K_1(1400)$ as a mixture of two $|^3P_1\rangle$ and $|^1P_1\rangle$ states with the mixing angle $θ$ that equal to $(-34\pm 13)^\circ$. We calculate the light-front distribution amplitudes (LFDAs) and decay constant formulas for both the axial-vector mesons $K_1$ in the AdS/QCD correspondence. The transition form factors of the semileptonic $B\to K_1$ decays are derived in terms of the LFDAs for $K_1$ mesons. Using these form factors and decay constant values, the differential branching ratios of $B\to K_1 (1270, 1400) \ell^+ \ell^-$,~$\ell=μ…
We review a novel model-independent approach to the analysis of new-physics effects in the $s\to u\ell^-\barν$ transitions. We apply it to (semi)leptonic kaon decays and study their complementarity with pion and hyperon $β$ decays or with collider searches of new physics.
We report on our calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factors in Nf=2+1 lattice QCD. Chiral symmetry is exactly preserved by using the overlap quark action for a straightforward comparison with chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We simulate three pion masses down to 290 MeV at a single lattice spacing of 0.11 fm and at a strange quark mass very close to its physical value. The form factors near zero momentum transfer are precisely calculated by using the all-to-all propagator and twisted boundary conditions. We compare the normalizations and slopes of the form factors with ChPT and experi…
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the axial $γW$-box diagrams relevant for the kaon semileptonic decays. We utilize a recently proposed method, which connects the electroweak radiative corrections in Sirlin's representation to that in chiral perturbation theory. It allows us to use the axial $γW$-box correction in the SU(3) limit to obtain the low energy constants for chiral perturbation theory. From first principles our results confirm the previously used low energy constants provided by the minimal resonance model with a significant reduction in uncertainties.
Decays of $B$ mesons with leptons in the final state offer an interesting laboratory to search for possible effects of physics from beyond the Standard Model. In view of puzzling patterns in experimental data, the violation of lepton flavour universality is an interesting option. We present a strategy, utilising ratios of leptonic and semileptonic $B$ decays, where the elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ of the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa (CKM) matrix cancel, to constrain the short-distance coefficients of (pseudo)-scalar, vector and tensor operator contributions. The individual branching ratio…
A brief update is given on recent developments in the theory of exclusive semileptonic charm decays. A check on analyticity arguments from the kaon system is reviewed. Recent results on form factor shape measurements are discussed.
We perform an analysis of two-body non leptonic decays of $B$ and $B_s$ mesons in the factorization approximation. We make use of the semileptonic decay amplitudes previously calculated on the basis of an effective lagrangian satisfying chiral and heavy quark symmetries and including spin 1 resonances. Exclusive semileptonic $D$-decay data are used as experimental input. Our results compare favorably with data, whenever they are available and indicate a positive value for the ratio of non leptonic coefficients $a_2/a_1$, similarly to previous studies.
I describe CLEO-c purely leptonic decay results leading to fD+=(222.6 +/- 16.7^{+2.8}_{-3.4}) MeV, fDs+=(280.1 +/- 11.6 +/- 6.0) MeV, and fDs+/fD+=1.26 +/- 0.11 +/-0.03. Form-factor measurements in Cabibbo favored and suppressed pseudoscalar decays are presented. Some comparisons are made with theoretical predictions.
We study the semileptonic transitions B_c to η_c, J/ψ, D, D^*, B, B^*, B_s, B_s^* in the framework of a relativistic constituent quark model. We use experimental data on leptonic J/ψdecay, lattice and QCD sum rule results on leptonic B_c decay, and on radiative η_c transitions to adjust the quark model parameters. We compute all form factors of the above semileptonic B_c-transitions and give predictions for various semileptonic B_c decay modes including their τ-modes when they are kinematically accessible. The implications of heavy quark symmetry for the semileptonic decays are discussed and a…
Recent measurements of exclusive $B^{-} \to τ^{-}\,ν$ and $B^0 \to π^{+}\,l^{-}\,\barν_l$ decays via the $b \to u\,l\,ν$ transition process differ from the standard model expectation and, if they persist in future $B$ experiments, will be a definite hint of the physics beyond the standard model. Similar hints of new physics have been observed in $b \to c$ semileptonic transition processes as well. BABAR measures the ratio of branching fractions of $B \to (D,\,D^{\ast})\,τ\,ν$ to the corresponding $B \to (D,\,D^{\ast})\,lν$, where $l$ represents either an electron or a muon, and finds $3.4σ$ di…
We discuss the recent progress in the study of semileptonic kaon and pion decays, including new experimental results, improved electroweak radiative corrections, form factor calculations and isospin-breaking effects. As a result, we obtain $|V_{us}|=0.22309(40)(39)(3)$ from kaon semileptonic decays and $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|=0.22908(66)(41)(40)(2)(1)$ from the ratio between the kaon and pion semileptonic decay rates. We report an apparent violation of the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity at a $3.2\sim 5.6σ$ level, and a discrepancy at a $2.2σ$ level between the value of $|V_{us}/V_…
We present the first calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factor with sea and valence quark masses tuned to their physical values in the continuum limit of 2+1 flavour domain wall lattice QCD. We analyse a comprehensive set of simulations at the phenomenologically convenient point of zero momentum transfer in large physical volumes and for two different values of the lattice spacing. Our prediction for the form factor is f+(0)=0.9685(34)(14) where the first error is statistical and the second error systematic. This result can be combined with experimental measurements of K->pi decays for …
Latest measurement of the ratio of branching ratios $R_D = \mathcal B(B \to D\,τ\,ν)/\mathcal B(B \to D\,l\,ν)$ and $R_{D^{\ast}} = \mathcal B(B \to D^{\ast}\,τ\,ν)/\mathcal B(B \to D^{\ast}\,l\,ν)$, where $l$ is either an electron or muon, differs from the standard model expectation by $1.9σ$ and $3.3σ$, respectively. Similar tension has been observed in purely leptonic $B \to τν$ decays as well. In this context, we consider the most general effective Lagrangian in the presence of new physics and perform a model independent analysis to explore various new physics couplings. Motivated by the r…
