"Semantic Atlas" is a mathematic and statistic model to visualise word senses according to relations between words. The model, that has been applied to proximity relations from a corpus, has shown its ability to distinguish word senses as the corpus' contributors comprehend them. We propose to use the model and a specialised corpus in order to create automatically a specialised dictionary relative to the corpus' domain. A morpho-syntactic analysis performed on the corpus makes it possible to create the dictionary from syntactic relations between lexical units. The semantic resource can be used to navigate semantically - and not only lexically - through the corpus, to create classical dictionaries or for diachronic studies of the language.
Many word clouds provide no semantics to the word placement, but use a random layout optimized solely for aesthetic purposes. We propose a novel approach to model word significance and word affinity within a document, and in comparison to a large background corpus. We demonstrate its usefulness for generating more meaningful word clouds as a visual summary of a given document. We then select keywords based on their significance and construct the word cloud based on the derived affinity. Based on a modified t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), we generate a semantic word placeme…

Reference corpus for word alignment is an important resource for developing and evaluating word alignment methods. For Myanmar-English language pairs, there is no reference corpus to evaluate the word alignment tasks. Therefore, we created the guidelines for Myanmar-English word alignment annotation between two languages over contrastive learning and built the Myanmar-English reference corpus consisting of verified alignments from Myanmar ALT of the Asian Language Treebank (ALT). This reference corpus contains confident labels sure (S) and possible (P) for word alignments which are used to tes…
This study is an attempt to build a contemporary linguistic corpus for Arabic language. The corpus produced, is a text corpus includes more than five million newspaper articles. It contains over a billion and a half words in total, out of which, there is about three million unique words. The data were collected from newspaper articles in ten major news sources from eight Arabic countries, over a period of fourteen years. The corpus was encoded with two types of encoding, namely: UTF-8, and Windows CP-1256. Also it was marked with two mark-up languages, namely: SGML, and XML.

The word embedding methods have been proven to be very useful in many tasks of NLP (Natural Language Processing). Much has been investigated about word embeddings of English words and phrases, but only little attention has been dedicated to other languages. Our goal in this paper is to explore the behavior of state-of-the-art word embedding methods on Czech, the language that is characterized by very rich morphology. We introduce new corpus for word analogy task that inspects syntactic, morphosyntactic and semantic properties of Czech words and phrases. We experiment with Word2Vec and GloVe al…

We present the IndicNLP corpus, a large-scale, general-domain corpus containing 2.7 billion words for 10 Indian languages from two language families. We share pre-trained word embeddings trained on these corpora. We create news article category classification datasets for 9 languages to evaluate the embeddings. We show that the IndicNLP embeddings significantly outperform publicly available pre-trained embedding on multiple evaluation tasks. We hope that the availability of the corpus will accelerate Indic NLP research. The resources are available at https://github.com/ai4bharat-indicnlp/indic…
In this article, we propose an automatic process to build multi-lingual lexico-semantic resources. The goal of these resources is to browse semantically textual information contained in texts of different languages. This method uses a mathematical model called Atlas sémantiques in order to represent the different senses of each word. It uses the linguistic relations between words to create graphs that are projected into a semantic space. These projections constitute semantic maps that denote the sense trends of each given word. This model is fed with syntactic relations between words extracted…

Representing words and phrases into dense vectors of real numbers which encode semantic and syntactic properties is a vital constituent in natural language processing (NLP). The success of neural network (NN) models in NLP largely rely on such dense word representations learned on the large unlabeled corpus. Sindhi is one of the rich morphological language, spoken by large population in Pakistan and India lacks corpora which plays an essential role of a test-bed for generating word embeddings and developing language independent NLP systems. In this paper, a large corpus of more than 61 million…
Ubuntu dialogue corpus is the largest public available dialogue corpus to make it feasible to build end-to-end deep neural network models directly from the conversation data. One challenge of Ubuntu dialogue corpus is the large number of out-of-vocabulary words. In this paper we proposed a method which combines the general pre-trained word embedding vectors with those generated on the task-specific training set to address this issue. We integrated character embedding into Chen et al's Enhanced LSTM method (ESIM) and used it to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method. For the task of …
In textual knowledge management, statistical methods prevail. Nonetheless, some difficulties cannot be overcome by these methodologies. I propose a symbolic approach using a complete textual analysis to identify which analysis level can improve the the answers provided by a system. The approach identifies word senses and relation between words and generates as many rephrasings as possible. Using synonyms and derivative, the system provides new utterances without changing the original meaning of the sentences. Such a way, an information can be retrieved whatever the question or answer's wording…

Stemming is a process that can be utilized to trim inflected words to stem or root form. It is useful for enhancing the retrieval effectiveness, especially for text search in order to solve the mismatch problems. Previous research on Bangla stemming mostly relied on eliminating multiple suffixes from a solitary word through a recursive rule based procedure to recover progressively applicable relative root. Our proposed system has enhanced the aforementioned exploration by actualizing one of the stemming algorithms called N-gram stemming. By utilizing an affiliation measure called dice coeffici…

In Part 1, the method of how the emotion data is culled for each of the four languages will be described and very preliminary data will be presented. In total, we identified 3,750 emotion expressions in Malay, 6,657 in Indonesian, 3,347 in Mandarin Chinese and 8,683 in English. We are currently evaluating and double checking the corpus and doing further analysis on the distribution of these emotion expressio…
Calculating the semantic similarity between sentences is a long dealt problem in the area of natural language processing. The semantic analysis field has a crucial role to play in the research related to the text analytics. The semantic similarity differs as the domain of operation differs. In this paper, we present a methodology which deals with this issue by incorporating semantic similarity and corpus statistics. To calculate the semantic similarity between words and sentences, the proposed method follows an edge-based approach using a lexical database. The methodology can be applied in a v…

In the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), we revisit the well-known word embedding algorithm word2vec. Word embeddings identify words by vectors such that the words' distributional similarity is captured. Unexpectedly, besides semantic similarity even relational similarity has been shown to be captured in word embeddings generated by word2vec, whence two questions arise. Firstly, which kind of relations are representable in continuous space and secondly, how are relations built. In order to tackle these questions we propose a bottom-up point of view. We call generating input text for …
We present ASDiv (Academia Sinica Diverse MWP Dataset), a diverse (in terms of both language patterns and problem types) English math word problem (MWP) corpus for evaluating the capability of various MWP solvers. Existing MWP corpora for studying AI progress remain limited either in language usage patterns or in problem types. We thus present a new English MWP corpus with 2,305 MWPs that cover more text patterns and most problem types taught in elementary school. Each MWP is annotated with its problem type and grade level (for indicating the level of difficulty). Furthermore, we propose a met…

The corpus, from which a predictive language model is trained, can be considered the experience of a semantic system. We recorded everyday reading of two participants for two months on a tablet, generating individual corpus samples of 300/500K tokens. Then we trained word2vec models from individual corpora and a 70 million-sentence newspaper corpus to obtain individual and norm-based long-term memory structure. To test whether individual corpora can make better predictions for a cognitive task of long-term memory retrieval, we generated stimulus materials consisting of 134 sentences with uncor…

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) and Word2vec are some of the most widely used word embeddings. Despite the popularity of these techniques, the precise mechanisms by which they acquire new semantic relations between words remain unclear. In the present article we investigate whether LSA and Word2vec capacity to identify relevant semantic dimensions increases with size of corpus. One intuitive hypothesis is that the capacity to identify relevant dimensions should increase as the amount of data increases. However, if corpus size grow in topics which are not specific to the domain of interest, sign…

Methods for learning word representations using large text corpora have received much attention lately due to their impressive performance in numerous natural language processing (NLP) tasks such as, semantic similarity measurement, and word analogy detection. Despite their success, these data-driven word representation learning methods do not consider the rich semantic relational structure between words in a co-occurring context. On the other hand, already much manual effort has gone into the construction of semantic lexicons such as the WordNet that represent the meanings of words by definin…
Semantic knowledge can be a great asset to natural language processing systems, but it is usually hand-coded for each application. Although some semantic information is available in general-purpose knowledge bases such as WordNet and Cyc, many applications require domain-specific lexicons that represent words and categories for a particular topic. In this paper, we present a corpus-based method that can be used to build semantic lexicons for specific categories. The input to the system is a small set of seed words for a category and a representative text corpus. The output is a ranked list of …
This paper presents a manually annotated spelling error corpus for Amharic, lingua franca in Ethiopia. The corpus is designed to be used for the evaluation of spelling error detection and correction. The misspellings are tagged as non-word and real-word errors. In addition, the contextual information available in the corpus makes it useful in dealing with both types of spelling errors.

In this paper, we present a distributional word embedding model trained on one of the largest available Russian corpora: Araneum Russicum Maximum (over 10 billion words crawled from the web). We compare this model to the model trained on the Russian National Corpus (RNC). The two corpora are much different in their size and compilation procedures. We test these differences by evaluating the trained models against the Russian part of the Multilingual SimLex999 semantic similarity dataset. We detect and describe numerous issues in this dataset and publish a new corrected version. Aside from the …

Deep learning based natural language processing model is proven powerful, but need large-scale dataset. Due to the significant gap between the real-world tasks and existing Chinese corpus, in this paper, we introduce a large-scale corpus of informal Chinese. This corpus contains around 37 million book reviews and 50 thousand netizen's comments to the news. We explore the informal words frequencies of the corpus and show the difference between our corpus and the existing ones. The corpus can be further used to train deep learning based natural language processing tasks such as Chinese word segm…
Fixed-vocabulary language models fail to account for one of the most characteristic statistical facts of natural language: the frequent creation and reuse of new word types. Although character-level language models offer a partial solution in that they can create word types not attested in the training corpus, they do not capture the "bursty" distribution of such words. In this paper, we augment a hierarchical LSTM language model that generates sequences of word tokens character by character with a caching mechanism that learns to reuse previously generated words. To validate our model we cons…

Word senses are not static and may have temporal, spatial or corpus-specific scopes. Identifying such scopes might benefit the existing WSD systems largely. In this paper, while studying corpus specific word senses, we adapt three existing predominant and novel-sense discovery algorithms to identify these corpus-specific senses. We make use of text data available in the form of millions of digitized books and newspaper archives as two different sources of corpora and propose automated methods to identify corpus-specific word senses at various time points. We conduct an extensive and thorough h…
A common practice in Natural Language Processing (NLP) is to visualize the text corpus without reading through the entire literature, still grasping the central idea and key points described. For a long time, researchers focused on extracting topics from the text and visualizing them based on their relative significance in the corpus. However, recently, researchers started coming up with more complex systems that not only expose the topics of the corpus but also word closely related to the topic to give users a holistic view. These detailed visualizations spawned research on comparing text cor…

We analyze the rank-frequency distributions of words in selected English and Polish texts. We show that for the lemmatized (basic) word forms the scale-invariant regime breaks after about two decades, while it might be consistent for the whole range of ranks for the inflected word forms. We also find that for a corpus consisting of texts written by different authors the basic scale-invariant regime is broken more strongly than in the case of comparable corpus consisting of texts written by the same author. Similarly, for a corpus consisting of texts translated into Polish from other languages …

In this paper, we present the first public version of DisMo for French. The system is trained and its performance evaluated on a 57k-token corpus, including different varieties of French spoken in three countries (Belgium, France and Switzerland). DisMo supports a mu…
It is often useful to sort words into an order that reflects relations among their meanings as obtained by using a thesaurus. In this paper, we introduce a method of arranging words semantically by using several types of `{\sf is-a}' thesauri and a multi-dimensional thesaurus. We also describe three major applications where a meaning sort is useful and show the effectiveness of a meaning sort. Since there is no doubt that a word list in meaning-order is easier to use than a word list in some random order, a meaning sort, which can easily produce a word list in meaning-order, must be useful and…
S92 research was begun in 1987 to analyze word frequencies in present-day Spanish for making speech pathology evaluation tools. 500 2,000-word samples of children, adolescents and adults' language were input between 1988-1991, calculations done in 1992; statistical and Lewandowski analyses were carried out in 1993.
We introduce word vectors for the construction domain. Our vectors were obtained by running word2vec on an 11M-word corpus that we created from scratch by leveraging freely-accessible online sources of construction-related text. We first explore the embedding space and show that our vectors capture meaningful construction-specific concepts. We then evaluate the performance of our vectors against that of ones trained on a 100B-word corpus (Google News) within the framework of an injury report classification task. Without any parameter tuning, our embeddings give competitive results, and outperf…

The Digital Corpus of Sanskrit records around 650,000 sentences along with their morphological and lexical tagging. But inconsistencies in morphological analysis, and in providing crucial information like the segmented word, urges the need for standardization and validation of this corpus. Automating the validation process requires efficient analyzers which also provide the missing information. The Sanskrit Heritage Engine's Reader produces all possible segmentations with morphological and lexical analyses. Aligning these systems would help us in recording the linguistic differences, which can…

We investigate whether infant-directed speech (IDS) could facilitate word form learning when compared to adult-directed speech (ADS). To study this, we examine the distribution of word forms at two levels, acoustic and phonological, using a large database of spontaneous speech in Japanese. At the acoustic level we show that, as has been documented before for phonemes, the realizations of words are more variable and less discriminable in IDS than in ADS. At the phonological level, we find an effect in the opposite direction: the IDS lexicon contains more distinctive words (such as onomatopoeias…

Word embeddings are a basic building block of modern NLP pipelines. Efforts have been made to learn rich, efficient, and interpretable embeddings for large generic datasets available in the public domain. However, these embeddings have limited applicability for small corpora from specific domains such as automotive, manufacturing, maintenance and support, etc. In this work, we present a comprehensive notion of interpretability for word embeddings and propose a novel method to generate highly interpretable and efficient embeddings for a domain-specific small corpus. We report the evaluation res…

Predicting which words are considered hard to understand for a given target population is a vital step in many NLP applications such as text simplification. This task is commonly referred to as Complex Word Identification (CWI). With a few exceptions, previous studies have approached the task as a binary classification task in which systems predict a complexity value (complex vs. non-complex) for a set of target words in a text. This choice is motivated by the fact that all CWI datasets compiled so far have been annotated using a binary annotation scheme. Our paper addresses this limitation by…
This paper describes a web-based corpus of global language use with a focus on how this corpus can be used for data-driven language mapping. First, the corpus provides a representation of where national varieties of major languages are used (e.g., English, Arabic, Russian) together with consistently collected data for each variety. Second, the paper evaluates a language identification model that supports more local languages with smaller sample sizes than alternative off-the-shelf models. Improved language identification is essential for moving beyond majority languages. Given the focus on lan…

We present a word-sense induction method based on pre-trained masked language models (MLMs), which can cheaply scale to large vocabularies and large corpora. The result is a corpus which is sense-tagged according to a corpus-derived sense inventory and where each sense is associated with indicative words. Evaluation on English Wikipedia that was sense-tagged using our method shows that both the induced senses, and the per-instance sense assignment, are of high quality even compared to WSD methods, such as Babelfy. Furthermore, by training a static word embeddings algorithm on the sense-tagged …

Complementary to finding good general word embeddings, an important question for representation learning is to find dynamic word embeddings, e.g., across time or domain. Current methods do not offer a way to use or predict information on structure between sub-corpora, time or domain and dynamic embeddings can only be compared after post-alignment. We propose novel word embedding methods that provide general word representations for the whole corpus, domain-specific representations for each sub-corpus, sub-corpus structure, and embedding alignment simultaneously. We present an empirical evaluat…
We present a resource for the task of FrameNet semantic frame disambiguation of over 5,000 word-sentence pairs from the Wikipedia corpus. The annotations were collected using a novel crowdsourcing approach with multiple workers per sentence to capture inter-annotator disagreement. In contrast to the typical approach of attributing the best single frame to each word, we provide a list of frames with disagreement-based scores that express the confidence with which each frame applies to the word. This is based on the idea that inter-annotator disagreement is at least partly caused by ambiguity th…
Generative adversarial nets (GANs) have been successfully applied to the artificial generation of image data. In terms of text data, much has been done on the artificial generation of natural language from a single corpus. We consider multiple text corpora as the input data, for which there can be two applications of GANs: (1) the creation of consistent cross-corpus word embeddings given different word embeddings per corpus; (2) the generation of robust bag-of-words document embeddings for each corpora. We demonstrate our GAN models on real-world text data sets from different corpora, and show…
