In this paper, we consider half-integer charged particles predicted by models of orbifold compactification of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string theory. We find that it is possible for half-integer charged particles to exist in our universe, and the location of half-interger charged particles in a galaxy should be in the centers of the galaxy. By qualitative analysis, we find half-interger charged particles may be helpful in explaining the formation of SMBH at the large redshift and solving the UHECR puzzle.
In this paper, we study the perturbative aspects of the half-twisted variant of Witten's topological A-model on a complex orbifold X/G, where G is an isometry group of X. The objective is to furnish a purely physical interpretation of the mathematical theory of the Chiral de Rham complex on orbifolds recently constructed by Frenkel and Szczesny in [Chiral de Rham complex and orbifolds, arXiv: math.AG/0307181]. In turn, one can obtain a novel understanding of the holomorphic (twisted) N=2 superconformal structure underlying the untwisted and twisted sectors of the quantum sigma model, purely in…
Smooth Freund-Rubin backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity of the form AdS_4 x X^7 and preserving at least half of the supersymmetry have been recently classified. Requiring that amount of supersymmetry forces X to be a spherical space form, whence isometric to the quotient of the round 7-sphere by a freely-acting finite subgroup of SO(8). The classification is given in terms of ADE subgroups of the quaternions embedded in SO(8) as the graph of an automorphism. In this paper we extend this classification by dropping the requirement that the background be smooth, so that X is now allowe…
We describe conventional orientifold and orbifold quotients of string and M-theory in a unified approach based on exceptional field theory (ExFT). Using an extended spacetime, ExFT combines all the maximal ten and eleven dimensional supergravities into a single theory manifesting a global symmetry corresponding to the exceptional series of Lie groups. Here we will see how this extends to half-maximal theories by showing how a single $\mathbb{Z}_2$ generalised orbifold (or O-fold) of ExFT gives rise to M-theory on an interval, type II with orientifold planes and the heterotic theories in an ele…
We use simple current techniques and their relation to orbifolds with discrete torsion for studying the (0,2) CFT/geometry duality with non-rational internal N=2 SCFTs. Explicit formulas for the charged spectra of heterotic SO(10) GUT models are computed in terms of their extended Poincaré polynomials and the complementary Poincaré polynomial which can be computed in terms of the elliptic genera. While non-BPS states contribute to the charged spectrum, their contributions can be determined also for non-rational cases. For model building, with generalizations to SU(5) and SM gauge groups, one c…
We discuss Fayet-Iliopoulos terms in the context of five-dimensional supergravity compactified on an orbifold. For this purpose we use our superfield formulation of the off-shell 5D SUGRA. In the case of tuned FI terms, contrary to other claims, we find BPS solutions which ensure that N=1 supersymmetry is unbroken also in warped geometries. As in the rigid case, the FI terms induce odd masses for charged hypermultiplets, leading to the (de)localisation of the KK wave-functions near the fix-point branes. In the case of ungauged U(1)_R symmetry, we present also supersymmetric warped solutions in…
We find a formula for the resolution of fixed points in extensions of permutation orbifold conformal field theories by its (half-)integer spin simple currents. We show that the formula gives a unitary and modular invariant S matrix.
We find that the IIA Matrix models defined on the non-compact $C^3/Z_6$, $C^2/Z_2$ and $C^2/Z_4$ orbifolds preserve supersymmetry where the fermions are on-mass-shell Majorana-Weyl fermions. In these examples supersymmetry is preserved both in the orbifolded space and in the non-orbifolded space at the same time. The Matrix model on $C^3/Z_6$ orbifold has the same ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry as the case of $C^3/Z_3$ orbifold which was pointed out previously. On the other hand the Matrix models on $C^2/Z_2$ and $C^2/Z_4$ orbifold have a half of the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry. We further find tha…
We give the full set of $S$ matrices for extensions of $D(n)_1$ permutation orbifolds, extending our previous work to the yet unknown case of integer spin spinor currents. The main tool is triality of SO(8). We also provide fixed point resolution matrices for spinor currents of $D(n)_1$ permutation orbifolds with $n$ even and not multiple of four, where the spinor currents have half-integer spin.
We analyse the spectrum of non-BPS branes in the type I theory on the orbifold $T^4/{\cal I}_4$. We present a detailed analysis of the action of the worldsheet parity $Ω$ on the different D-brane boundary state sectors of type IIB on $T^4/{\cal I}_4$, using the covariant formulation. Using these results we derive the spectrum of branes in the type I orbifold. We find $\Z_2$- and $\Z$- charged non-BPS branes. A study of the stability of these branes in the type I orbifold is also presented. We find that the type I non-BPS D-particle and D-instanton remain stable in the orbifold. The D-particle …
Three-dimensional string models with half-maximal supersymmetry are believed to be invariant under a large U-duality group which unifies the S and T dualities in four dimensions. We propose an exact, U-duality invariant formula for four-derivative scalar couplings of the form $F(Φ) (\nablaΦ)^4$ in a class of string vacua known as CHL $\mathbb{Z}_N$ heterotic orbifolds with $N$ prime, generalizing our previous work which dealt with the case of heterotic string on $T^6$. We derive the Ward identities that $F(Φ)$ must satisfy, and check that our formula obeys them. We analyze the weak coupling ex…
We consider supersymmetric PP-wave limits for different N=1 orbifold geometries of the five sphere S^5 and the five dimensional Einstein manifold T^{1,1}. As there are several interesting ways to take the Penrose limits, the PP-wave geometry can be either maximal supersymmetric N=4 or half-maximal supersymmetric N=2. We discuss in detail the cases AdS_5 x S^5/Z_3, AdS_5 x S^5/(Z_m x Z_n) and AdS_5 x T^{1,1}/(\Z_m \times \Z_n) and we identify the gauge invariant operators which correspond to stringy excitations for the different limits.
We consider quotients of string and M-theory by discrete subgroups of the U-duality group. This results in what we call O-folds, which are generalisations of orbifolds and orientifolds, and generically involve non-geometric identifications between physical coordinates and dual winding coordinates. A simple $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quotient encodes the half-maximal duality web, describing on the same footing the Hořava-Witten description of M-theory on an interval, the heterotic theories, and type II in the presence of orientifold planes. This can be analysed using exceptional field theory, including the…
It is shown that the orbifold of type IIB string theory by (-1)^{F_L} I_4 admits a stable non-BPS Dirichlet particle that is stuck on the orbifold fixed plane. It is charged under the SO(2) gauge group coming from the twisted sector, and transforms as a long multiplet of the D=6 supersymmetry algebra. This suggests that it is the strong coupling dual of the perturbative stable non-BPS state that appears in the orientifold of type IIB by ΩI_4.
Recently, we have discussed the coexistence of a finite energy one-half monopole and a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole of opposite magnetic charges. In this paper, we would like to introduce electric charge into this new monopoles configuration, thus creating a one and a half dyon. This new dyon possesses finite energy, magnetic dipole moment and angular momentum and is able to precess in the presence of an external magnetic field. Similar to the other dyon solutions, when the Higgs self-coupling constant, $λ$, is nonvanishing, this new dyon solution possesses critical electric charge, total energy…
In this paper, we study on the one-plus-half monopole configuration in SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory when the $ϕ$-winding number, $n$, runs from 2 to 4 and for a range of Higgs coupling constant, $λ_b \leq λ\leq 40$, where $λ_b$ is the lower bound, below which no solution can be found. Bifurcation and transition are observed for $n > 2$ when the Higgs coupling constant is larger than some critical value $λ_c$ and transitional value $λ_t$, respectively. Two different branches with energy higher than the fundamental solution are observed for both $n = 3$ and $4$. We also observed a new branch wi…
Two string-like solutions to the equations of motion of the low-energy effective action for the heterotic string are found, each a source of electric and magnetic fields. The first carries an electric current equal to the electric charge per unit length and is the most general solution which preserves one half of the supersymmetries. The second is the most general charged solution with an event horizon, a `black string'. The relationship of the solutions to fundamental, macroscopic heterotic strings is discussed, and in particular it is shown that any stable state of such a fundamental string …
Using relativistic tensor-bispinorial equations proposed in hep-th/0412213 we solve the Kepler problem for a charged particle with arbitrary half-integer spin interacting with the Coulomb potential.
A realistic SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W unified theory is constructed with a TeV sized extra dimension compactified on the orbifold S_1/Z_2, leaving only the standard model gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y unbroken in the low energy 4D theory. The Higgs doublets are zero modes of bulk SU(3)_W triplets and serve to normalize the hypercharge generator, apparently giving a tree-level prediction for the weak mixing angle: \sin^2θ= 1/4. The orbifold boundary conditions imply a restricted set of SU(3)_W gauge transformations: at an orbifold fixed point only the transformations of SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y are op…
We discuss, in the context of classical electrodynamics with a Lorentz invariant cut-off at short distances, the self-force acting on a point charged particle. It follows that the electromagnetic mass of the point charge occurs in the equation of motion in a form consistent with special relativity. We find that the exact equation of motion does not exhibit runaway solutions or non-causal behavior, when the cut-off is larger than half of the classical radius of the electron.
When a charged particle encircles around an Alice string, it changes the sign of the electric charge. In this paper we find a BPS-saturated Alice string in $U(1)\times SO(3)$ gauge theory with charged complex scalar fields belonging to the vector representation. After performing BPS completion we solve the BPS equations numerically. We further embed the Alice string into an ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory to show that it is half BPS.
