For weak dispersion and weak dissipation cases, the (1+1)-dimensional KdV-Burgers equation is investigated in terms of approximate symmetry reduction approach. The formal coherence of similarity reduction solutions and similarity reduction equations of different orders enables series reduction solutions. For weak dissipation case, zero-order similarity solutions satisfy the Painlevé II, Painlevé I and Jacobi elliptic function equations. For weak dispersion case, zero-order similarity solutions are in the form of Kummer, Airy and hyperbolic tangent functions. Higher order similarity solutions can be obtained by solving linear ordinary differential equations.
Evaluation of analytical solutions of non-linear partial differential equations (both classical and fractional) is a rising subject in Applied Mathematics because its applications in Physical biological and social sciences. In this paper we have used generalized Tanh method to find the exact solution of KP-Burger equation and coupled KdV equation. The fractional Sub-equation method has been used to find the solution of fractional KP-Burger equation and fractional coupled KdV equations. The exact solution obtained by fractional sub-equation method reduces to classical solution when order of fra…
We study the behavior of the soliton which, while moving in non-dissipative medium encounters a barrier with dissipation. The modelling included the case of a finite dissipative layer as well as a wave passing from a dissipative layer into a non-dissipative one and vice versa. New effects are presented in the case of numerically finite barrier on the soliton path: first, if the form of dissipation distribution has a form of a frozen soliton, the wave that leaves the dissipative barrier becomes a bi-soliton and a reflection wave arises as a comparatively small and quasi-harmonic oscillation. Se…
We discuss the recent paper by Inan and Ugurlu [Inan I.E., Ugurlu Y., Exp-function method for the exact solutions of fifth order KdV equation and modified Burgers equation, Appl. Math. Comp. 217 (2010) 1294 -- 1299]. We demonstrate that all exact solutions of fifth order KdV equation and modified Burgers equation by Inan and Ugurlu are trivial solutions that are reduced to constants. Moreover, we show exact solutions of the fifth -- order equation studied by Inan and Ugurlu cannot be found by the Exp-function method.
We study the behavior of the soliton which, while moving in non-dissipative medium encounters a barrier with finite dissipation. The modelling included the case of a finite dissipative layer similar to a wave passing through the air-glass-air as well as a wave passing from a non-dissipative layer into a dissipative one (similar to the passage of light from air to water). The dissipation predictably results in reducing the soliton amplitude/velocity, but some new effects occur in the case of finite barrier on the soliton path: after the wave leaves the dissipative barrier it retains a soliton f…
We simulate KdV and dissipation-less Burgers equations using delta-correlated random noise as initial condition. We observe that the energy fluxes of the two equations remain zero throughout, thus indicating their equilibrium nature. We characterize the equilibrium states using Gaussian probability distribution for the real space field, and using Boltzmann distribution for the modal energy. We show that the single soliton of the KdV equation too exhibits zero energy flux, hence it is in equilibrium. We argue that the energy flux is a good measure for ascertaining whether a system is in equilib…

We demonstrate the behavior of the soliton which, while moving in non-dissipative and dispersion-constant medium encounters a finite-width barrier with varying dissipation and/or dispersion; beyond the layer dispersion is constant (but not necessarily of the same value) and dissipation is null. The passed wave either retains the form of a soliton (though of different parameters) or becomes a bi-soliton. And a reflection wave may be negligible or absent. This models a situation similar to a light passing from a humid air to a dry one through the vapour saturation/condensation area. Some rough e…
Connections via Baecklund transformations among different non-linear evolution equations are investigated aiming to compare corresponding Abelian and non Abelian results. Specifically, links, via Baecklund transformations, connecting Burgers and KdV-type hierarchies of nonlinear evolution equations are studied. Crucial differences as well as notable similarities between Baecklund charts in the case of the Burgers - heat equation, on one side and KdV -type equations are considered. The Baecklund charts constructed in [16] and [17], respectively, to connect Burgers and KdV-type hierarchies of op…
The perturbed Burgers and KdV equations are considered. Often, the perturbation excites waves that are different from the solution one is seeking. In the case of the Burgers equation, the spontaneously generated wave is also a solution of the equation. In contrast, in the case of the KdV equation, this wave is constructed from new (non-KdV) solitons that undergo an elastic collision around the origin. Their amplitudes have opposite signs, which they exchange upon collision. The perturbation then contains terms, which represent coupling between the solution and these spontaneously generated wav…
We construct one-parameter deformation of the Dorfman Hamiltonian operator for the Riemann hierarchy using the quasi-Miura transformation from topological field theory. In this way, one can get the approximately rational symmetries of KdV equation and then investigate its bi-Hamiltonian structure.
Based on a superposition method recently proposed to obtain 1-solitary wave solutions of the KdV-Burgers equation \cite{Yua2005}, we show that this method can also be used to find a 2-solitary wave solution of the Novikov-Veselov equation. Thus, it seems that the method of Yuanxi and Jiashi in general is not restricted to constructing 1-solitary wave solutions of nonlinear wave and evolution equations (NLWEEs).
This paper deals with the category of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) associated with the spectral problem and provides an approach for constructing their algebraic structure and $r$-matrix. First we introduce the category of NLEEs, which composes of various positive order and negative order hierarchies of NLEEs both integrable and non-integrable. The whole category of NLEEs possesses a generalized Lax representation. Next, we present two different Lie algebraic structures of the Lax operator, one of them is universal in the category,i.e. independent of the hierarchy, while the other one…
An elementary yet remarkable similarity between the Cole-Hopf transformation relating the Burgers and heat equation and Miura's transformation connecting the KdV and mKdV equations is studied in detail.
This paper addresses a modified ($G'/G$)-expansion method to obtain new classes of solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (NPDEs). The cases of Burgers, KdV and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili NPDEs are exhaustively studied. Relevant graphical representations are shown in each case.
Familiar nonlinear and in particular soliton equations arise as zero curvature conditions for GL(1,R) connections with noncommutative differential calculi. The Burgers equation is formulated in this way and the Cole-Hopf transformation for it attains the interpretation of a transformation of the connection to a pure gauge in this mathematical framework. The KdV, modified KdV equation and the Miura transformation are obtained jointly in a similar setting and a rather straightforward generalization leads to the KP and a modified KP equation. Furthermore, a differential calculus associated with t…
A nonlocal form of a two-layer fluid system is proposed by a simple symmetry reduction, then by applying multiple scale method to it a general nonlocal two place variable coefficient modified KdV (VCmKdV) equation with shifted space and delayed time reversal is derived. Various exact solutions of the VCmKdV equation, including elliptic periodic waves, solitary waves and interaction solutions between solitons and periodic waves are obtained and analyzed graphically. As an illustration, an approximate solution of the original nonlocal two-layer fluid system is also given.
We perform a classification of integrable systems of mixed scalar and vector evolution equations with respect to higher symmetries. We consider polynomial systems that are homogeneous under a suitable weighting of variables. This paper deals with the KdV weighting, the Burgers (or potential KdV or modified KdV) weighting, the Ibragimov-Shabat weighting and two unfamiliar weightings. The case of other weightings will be studied in a subsequent paper. Making an ansatz for undetermined coefficients and using a computer package for solving bilinear algebraic systems, we give the complete lists of …
In multiple-front solutions of the Burgers equation, all the fronts, except for two, are generated through the inelastic interaction of exponential wave solutions of the Lax pair associated with the equation. The inelastically generated fronts are the source of two difficulties encountered in the standard Normal Form expansion of the approximate solution of the perturbed Burgers equation, when the zero-order term is a multiple-front solution: (i) The higher-order terms in the expansion are not bounded; (ii) The Normal Form (equation obeyed by the zero-order approximation) is not asymptotically…
It is shown that the emergence of obstacles to asymptotic integrability in the analysis of perturbed evolution equations may, often, be a consequence of the manner, in which the freedom in the ex-pansion is exploited in the derivation of the equations. Algorithms exist, which yield perturbed evolution equations that are devoid of the obstacles for cases, in which, traditionally, obstacles are encountered. The derivation of the perturbed KdV equation for two physical systems (propagation of small amplitude disturbances on a shallow fluid layer, and the ion acoustic wave equations in Plasma Phys…
For an arbitrary solution to the Burgers--KdV hierarchy, we define the tau-tuple $(τ_1,τ_2)$ of the solution. We show that the product $τ_1τ_2$ admits Buryak's residue formula. Therefore, according to Alexandrov's theorem, $τ_1τ_2$ is a tau-function of the KP hierarchy. We then derive a formula for the affine coordinates for the point of the Sato Grassmannian corresponding to the tau-function $τ_1τ_2$ explicitly in terms of those for $τ_1$. Applications to the analogous open extension of the generalized BGW tau-function and to the open partition function are given.
In this paper we construct a higher order expansion of the manifold of quasi unidirectional waves in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain. We also approximate the dynamics on this manifold. As perturbation parameter we use $h^2=1/n^2$, where $n$ is the number of particles of the chain. It is well known that the dynamics of quasi unidirectional waves is described to first order by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Here we show that the dynamics to second order is governed by a combination of the first two nontrivial equations in the KdV hierarchy -- for any choice of parameters in the FPU poten…
