Determining the ultimate classical information carrying capacity of electromagnetic waves requires quantum-mechanical analysis to properly account for the bosonic nature of these waves. Recent work has established capacity theorems for bosonic single-user and broadcast channels, under the presumption of two minimum output entropy conjectures. Despite considerable accumulated evidence that supports the validity of these conjectures, they have yet to be proven. In this paper, it is shown that the second conjecture suffices to prove the classical capacity of the bosonic wiretap channel, which in turn would also prove the quantum capacity of the lossy bosonic channel. The preceding minimum output entropy conjectures are then shown to be simple consequences of an Entropy Photon-Number Inequality (EPnI), which is a conjectured quantum-mechanical analog of the Entropy Power Inequality (EPI) form classical information theory.
We prove an upper bound on the private capacity of the single-mode noiseless bosonic wiretap channel. Combined with a previous lower bound, we obtain the low photon-number asymptotic expression for the private capacity. We then show that the multiple-mode noiseless bosonic wiretap channel is equivalent to parallel single-mode channels, hence the single-mode bounds can be applied. Finally, we consider multiple-spatial-mode propagation through atmospheric turbulence, and derive a private-capacity lower bound that only requires second moments of the channel matrix.

We show that under certain assumptions one can derive a variant of Specker's non-contextual inequality for a system of three indistinguishable bosonic particles. The inequality states that the sum of probabilities of three pairwise exclusive events is bounded by one. This inequality cannot be violated using standard quantum mechanical projectors. On the other hand, due to bosonic properties this bound is violated up to 3/2. We also argue that the violation of this inequality can be considered as a test of bosonic nature.
We prove the conditional Entropy Power Inequality for Gaussian quantum systems. This fundamental inequality determines the minimum quantum conditional von Neumann entropy of the output of the beam-splitter or of the squeezing among all the input states where the two inputs are conditionally independent given the memory and have given quantum conditional entropies. We also prove that, for any couple of values of the quantum conditional entropies of the two inputs, the minimum of the quantum conditional entropy of the output given by the conditional Entropy Power Inequality is asymptotically ach…
In most communication schemes information is transmitted via travelling modes of electromagnetic radiation. These modes are unavoidably subject to environmental noise along any physical transmission medium and the quality of the communication channel strongly depends on the minimum noise achievable at the output. For classical signals such noise can be rigorously quantified in terms of the associated Shannon entropy and it is subject to a fundamental lower bound called entropy power inequality. Electromagnetic fields are however quantum mechanical systems and then, especially in low intensity …
In a recent paper, Kurzynski et al. present a gedanken experiment that, they claim, violates the Klyachko-Can-Binicioglu-Shumovsky (KCBS) noncontextuality (NC) inequality beyond its maximum quantum value, and a similar experiment that, they claim, violates Specker's NC inequality, which is not violated by quantum mechanics. We argue that these claims are baseless, since these experiments do not satisfy the conditions required for any observation of contextuality through the experimental violation of a NC inequality. Moreover, the physical events in the experiments of Kurzynski et al. do not ha…
Recently, there have been considerable progresses on the bounds of various quantum channel capacities for bosonic Gaussian channels. Especially, several upper bounds for the classical capacity and the quantum capacity on the bosonic Gaussian channels, via a technique known as quantum entropy power inequality, have been shed light on understanding the mysterious quantum-channel-capacity problems. However, upper bounds for the private capacity on quantum channels are still missing for the study on certain universal upper bounds. Here, we derive upper bounds on the private capacity for bosonic Ga…
Entangled coherent states for multiple bosonic modes, also referred to as multimode cat states, not only are of fundamental interest, but also have practical applications. The nonclassical correlation among these modes is well characterized by the violation of the Mermin-Klyshko inequality. We here study Mermin-Klyshko inequality violations for such multi-mode entangled states with rotated quantum-number parity operators. Our results show that the Mermin-Klyshko signal obtained with these operators can approach the maximal value even when the average quantum number in each mode is only 1, and …
We study quantum computation relations on unital finite-dimensional CAR $C^{*}$-algebras. We prove an entropy power inequality (EPI) in a fermionic setting, which presumably will permit understanding the capacities in fermionic linear optics. Similar relations to the bosonic case are shown, and alternative proofs of known facts are given. Clifford algebras and the Grassmann representation can thus be used to obtain mathematical results regarding coherent fermion states.
We propose a generalization of the quantum entropy power inequality involving conditional entropies. For the special case of Gaussian states, we give a proof based on perturbation theory for symplectic spectra. We discuss some implications for entanglement-assisted classical communication over additive bosonic noise channels.
Alice is transmitting a private message to Bob across a bosonic wiretap channel with the help of a public feedback channel to which all parties, including the fully-quantum equipped Eve, have completely noiseless access. We find that by altering the model such that Eve's copy of the initial round of feedback is corrupted by an iota of noise, one step towards physical relevance, the capacity can be increased dramatically. It is known that the private capacity with respect to the original model for a pure-loss bosonic channel is at most $- \log(1-η)$ bits per mode, where $η$ is the transmissivit…
We uncover a form of quantum contextuality that connects maximal contextuality to boson indistinguihability in a similar way maximal nonlocality with respect to the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality is connected to maximal entanglement. Unlike previous forms of photonic contextuality, this form cannot be simulated with classical light, as it relies on indistinguishability and higher-order interference. Ideal measurements on the bosonic system can be performed by means of dispersive coupling with an ancillary qubit. This allows us delaying at will the ending of each measurement and tar…
The quantum version of a fundamental entropic data-processing inequality is presented. It establishes a lower bound for the entropy that can be generated in the output channels of a scattering process, which involves a collection of independent input bosonic modes (e.g., the modes of the electromagnetic field). The impact of this inequality in quantum information theory is potentially large and some relevant implications are considered in this work.
Many partially-successful attempts have been made to find the most natural discrete-variable version of Shannon's entropy power inequality (EPI). We develop an axiomatic framework from which we deduce the natural form of a discrete-variable EPI and an associated entropic monotonicity in a discrete-variable central limit theorem. In this discrete EPI, the geometric distribution, which has the maximum entropy among all discrete distributions with a given mean, assumes a role analogous to the Gaussian distribution in Shannon's EPI. The entropy power of $X$ is defined as the mean of a geometric ra…
Most of the paradoxical, for the classical intuition, features of quantum theory were formulated for situations which involve a fixed number of particles. While one can now find a formulation of Bell's theorem for quantum fields, a Kochen-Specker-type reasoning is usually formulated for just one particle, or like in the case of Peres-Mermin square for two. A question emerges. Is it possible to formulate a contextuality proof for situation in which the numbers of particles are fundamentally undefined? We address this problem for bosonic fields. We introduce a representation of the $\mathfrak{su…
When two independent analog signals, X and Y are added together giving Z=X+Y, the entropy of Z, H(Z), is not a simple function of the entropies H(X) and H(Y), but rather depends on the details of X and Y's distributions. Nevertheless, the entropy power inequality (EPI), which states that exp [2H(Z)] \geq exp[2H(X)] + exp[2H(Y)], gives a very tight restriction on the entropy of Z. This inequality has found many applications in information theory and statistics. The quantum analogue of adding two random variables is the combination of two independent bosonic modes at a beam splitter. The purpose…
Recently, there has been focus on determining the conditions under which the data processing inequality for quantum relative entropy is satisfied with approximate equality. The solution of the exact equality case is due to Petz, who showed that the quantum relative entropy between two quantum states stays the same after the action of a quantum channel if and only if there is a \textit{reversal channel} that recovers the original states after the channel acts. Furthermore, this reversal channel can be constructed explicitly and is now called the \textit{Petz recovery map}. Recent developments h…
Since John Bell formulated his paramount inequality for a pair of spin-$1/2$ particles, quantum mechanics has been confronted with the postulates of local realism with various equivalent configurations. Current technology, with its advanced manipulation and detection methods, allows to extend the Bell tests to more complex structures. The aim of this work is to analyze a set of Bell inequalities suitable for a possibly broad family of many-body systems with the focus on bosonic qubits. We develop a method that allows for a step-by-step study of the many-body Bell correlations, for instance amo…
We show the violation of the entanglement-area law for bosonic systems with Bose surfaces. For bosonic systems with gapless factorized energy dispersions on a N^d Cartesian lattice in d-dimension, e.g., the exciton Bose liquid in two dimension, we explicitly show that a belt subsystem with width L preserving translational symmetry along d-1 Cartesian axes has leading entanglement entropy (N^{d-1}/3)ln L. Using this result, the strong subadditivity inequality, and lattice symmetries, we bound the entanglement entropy of a rectangular subsystem from below and above showing a logarithmic violatio…
We show that the general quantum state of synthetically spin-orbit coupled ultra cold bosonic atom whose condensate was experimentally created recently ( Y. J. Lin {\it et al.}, Nature, {\bf 471}, 83, (2011)), shows entanglement between motional degrees of freedom ( momentum) and internal degrees of freedom (hyperfine spin). We demonstrate the violation of Bell-like inequality (CHSH) for such states that provides a unique opportunity to verify fundamental principle like quantum non-contextuality for commutating observables which are not spatially separated. We analyze in detail the Rabi oscill…
The data processing inequality is the most basic requirement for any meaningful measure of information. It essentially states that distinguishability measures between states decrease if we apply a quantum channel and is the centerpiece of many results in information theory. Moreover, it justifies the operational interpretation of most entropic quantities. In this work, we revisit the notion of contraction coefficients of quantum channels, which provide sharper and specialized versions of the data processing inequality. A concept closely related to data processing is partial orders on quantum c…
We examine the non-Markovian dynamics in a multipartite system of two initially correlated atomic qubits, each located in a single-mode leaky cavity and interacting with its own bosonic reservoir. We show the dominance of non-Markovian features, as quantified by the difference in fidelity of the evolved system with its density matrix at an earlier time, in three specific two-qubit partitions associated with the cavity-cavity and atom-reservoir density matrices within the same subsystem, and the cavity-reservoir reduced matrix across the two subsystems. The non-Markovianity in the cavity-cavity…
The most natural way to describe an information-carrying system containing a specific noise is an additive white Gaussian-noise (AWGN) channel. In bosonic quantum systems (especially the Gaussian case), although the classical information capacity for a phase-insensitive and thermal-noise channel is additive based on a proof of the minimum output entropy conjecture, several open questions remain. By generalizing the Gaussian noise model from thermal noise to general Gaussian noise, we rigorously revisit and calculate these strong upper bounds on the information capacity for single-mode with gen…
Quantum contextuality in systems of identical bosonic particles is explicitly exhibited via the maximum violation of a suitable inequality of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt type. Unlike the approaches considered so far, which make use of single-particle observables, our analysis involves collective observables constructed using multi-boson operators. An exemplifying scheme to test this violation with a quantum optical setup is also discussed.
This paper defines the squashed entanglement of a quantum channel as the maximum squashed entanglement that can be registered by a sender and receiver at the input and output of a quantum channel, respectively. A new subadditivity inequality for the original squashed entanglement measure of Christandl and Winter leads to the conclusion that the squashed entanglement of a quantum channel is an additive function of a tensor product of any two quantum channels. More importantly, this new subadditivity inequality, along with prior results of Christandl, Winter, et al., establishes the squashed ent…
Recently de Palma et al. [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 728 (2017)] proved---using Lagrange multiplier techniques---that under a non-zero input entropy constraint, a thermal state input minimizes the output entropy of a pure-loss bosonic channel. In this note, we present our attempt to generalize this result to all single-mode gauge-covariant Gaussian channels by using similar techniques. Unlike the case of the pure-loss channel, we cannot prove that the thermal input state is the only local extremum of the optimization problem. %It is unclear to us why the same techniques do not lead to a proof…
Thermal attenuator channels model the decoherence of quantum systems interacting with a thermal bath, e.g., a two-level system subject to thermal noise and an electromagnetic signal travelling through a fiber or in free-space. Hence determining the quantum capacity of these channels is an outstanding open problem for quantum computation and communication. Here we derive several upper bounds on the quantum capacity of qubit and bosonic thermal attenuators. We introduce an extended version of such channels which is degradable and hence has a single-letter quantum capacity, bounding that of the o…
In the present paper we introduce and study Bosonic Gaussian classical-quantum (c-q) channels; the embedding of the classical input into quantum is always possible and therefore the classical entanglement-assisted capacity C_{ea} under appropriate input constraint is well defined. We prove a general property of entropy increase for weak complementary channel, that implies the equality C_{ea}=C (where C is the unassisted capacity) for certain class of c-q Gaussian channel under appropriate energy-type constraint. On the other hand, we show by explicit example that the inequality C<C_{ea} is not…
Following Ollivier's work, we introduce the coarse Ricci curvature of a quantum channel as the contraction of non-commutative metrics on the state space. These metrics are defined as a non-commutative transportation cost in the spirit of [N. Gozlan and C. Léonard. 2006], which gives a unified approach to different quantum Wasserstein distances in the literature. We prove that the coarse Ricci curvature lower bound and its dual gradient estimate, under suitable assumptions, imply the Poincaré inequality (spectral gap) as well as transportation cost inequalities. Using intertwining relations, we…
Elucidating similarities and differences between quantum-optics biphoton interference phenomena and the quantum physics of quasi-one-dimensional double-well optically-trapped ultracold neutral bosonic or fermionic atoms, we show that the analog of the optical biphoton joint-coincidence spectral correlations, studied with massless non-interacting biphotons emanating from EPR-Bell-Bohm single-occupancy sources, corresponds to a distinct contribution in the total second-order momentum correlations of the massive, interacting, and time-evolving ultracold atoms. This single-occupancy contribution c…
Quantum history states were recently formulated by extending the consistent histories approach of Griffiths to the entangled superposition of evolution paths and were then experimented with Greenberger--Horne--Zeilinger states. Tensor product structure of history-dependent correlations was also recently exploited as a quantum computing resource in simple linear optical setups performing multiplane diffraction (MPD) of fermionic and bosonic particles with remarkable promises. This significantly motivates the definition of quantum histories of MPD as entanglement resources with the inherent capa…

We show how weak non-linearities can be used in a device-independent quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol using generalized two-mode Schrödinger cat states. The QKD protocol is therefore shown to be secure against collective attacks and for some coherent attacks. We derive analytical formulas for the optimal values of the Bell parameter, the quantum bit error rate, and the device-independent secret key rate in the noiseless lossy bosonic channel. Additionally, we give the filters and measurements which achieve these optimal values. We find that over any distance in this channel the quantum …
Shannon's entropy power inequality (EPI) can be viewed as a statement of concavity of an entropic function of a continuous random variable under a scaled addition rule: $$f(\sqrt{a}\,X + \sqrt{1-a}\,Y) \ge a f(X) + (1-a) f(Y) \quad \forall \, a \in [0,1].$$ Here, $X$ and $Y$ are continuous random variables and the function $f$ is either the differential entropy or the entropy power. König and Smith [arXiv:1205.3409] and De Palma, Mari, and Giovannetti [arXiv:1402.0404] obtained quantum analogues of these inequalities for continuous-variable quantum systems, where $X$ and $Y$ are replaced by bo…
We investigate the time-dependent Rényi entanglement entropy after a quantum quench starting from the Mott-insulating and charge-density-wave states in a one-dimensional free boson system. The second Rényi entanglement entropy is found to be the negative of the logarithm of the permanent of a matrix consisting of time-dependent single-particle correlation functions. From this relation and a permanent inequality, we obtain rigorous conditions for satisfying the volume-law entanglement growth. We also succeed in calculating the time evolution of the Rényi entanglement entropy in unprecedentedly …
We consider a way to generate operational inequalities to test nonclassicality (or quantumness) of multimode (or multiparty) bosonic fields that unifies the derivation of many known inequalities and allows to propose new ones. The nonclassicality criteria are based on Vogel's criterion corresponding to analyzing the positivity of multimode P functions or, equivalently, the positivity of matrices of expectation values of, e.g., creation and annihilation operators. We analyze not only monomials, but also polynomial functions of such moments, which can sometimes enable simpler derivations of phys…
The area law conjecture states that the entanglement entropy of a region of space in the ground state of a gapped, local Hamiltonian only grows like the surface area of the region. We show that, for any quantum state that fulfills an area law, the reduced quantum state of a region of space can be unitarily compressed into a thickened surface of the region. If the interior of the region is lost after this compression, the full quantum state can be recovered to high precision by a quantum channel only acting on the thickened surface. The thickness of the boundary scales inversely proportional to…
