We experimentally and theoretically investigate the second order nonlinear optical response of metallo-dielectric multilayer structures composed of Ag and Ta2O5 layers, deposited by magnetron sputtering. Second harmonic generation measurements were performed in reflection mode as a function of incidence angle, using femtosecond pulses originating from a Ti:Sapphire laser system tuned at 800 nm. The dependence of the generated signal was investigated as a function of pump intensity and polarization state. Our experimental results show that the conversion efficiency from a periodic metallo-dielectric sample may be enhanced by at least a factor of 30 with respect to the conversion efficiency from a single metal layer, thanks in part to the increased number of active surfaces, pump field localization and penetration inside the metal layers. The conversion efficiency maximum shifts from 70 degrees for the single silver layer down to approximately 55 degrees for the stack. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with calculations based on coupled Maxwell-Drude oscillators under the action of a nonlinear Lorentz force term.
A metallo-dielectric multilayer structure is proposed as a novel approach to the analysis of lactose malabsorption. When lactose intolerance occurs, the bacterial overgrowth in the intestine causes an increased spontaneous emission of H2 in the human breath. By monitoring the changes in the optical properties of a multilayer palladium-polymeric structure, one is able to detect the patient's disease and the level of lactose malabsorption with high sensitivity and rapid response.
Under the sub-wavelength condition ($w<λ/2$), an analytical model of light transmission and reflection through $1$D metallo-dielectric gratings of real metals has been developed. It has been shown that the transmission intensity associated with the Fabry-Perot (FP) resonance of a $1$D metallo-dielectric grating of a real metal decreases with the increasing grating thickness and the dielectric constant of the ridge material. Further, it has also been demonstrated that the intensity of the FP resonance increases with the increasing slit width while it is independent of the grating period ($P$) a…
We provide theoretical and numerical tools to quantitatively study the impact of nonlocality arising from free electrons in metals on the optical properties of metallo-dielectric multilayers. Though effects due to nonlocality are in general quite small, they nevertheless can be important for very thin (typically below 10 nm) metallic layers - as are used in structures characterized by relatively flat dispersion curves. Such structures include those with negative refractive index; hyperbolic metamaterials; and materials with index near zero. We find in all cases that the inclusion of nonlocal e…
Photonic components based on structured metallic elements show great potential for device applications where field enhancement and confinement of the radiation on a subwavelength scale is required. In this paper we report a detailed study of a prototypical metallo-dielectric photonic structure, where features well known in the world of dielectric photonic crystals, like band gaps and defect modes, are exported to the metallic counterpart, with interesting applications to infrared science and technology, as for instance in quantum well infrared photodetectors, narrow-band spectral filters, and …
We report the design of highly efficient optical antennas employing a judicious synthesis of metallic and dielectric materials. In the proposed scheme, a pair of metallic coupled nanoparticles permits large enhancements in both excitation strength and radiative decay rates, while a high refractive index dielectric microsphere is employed to efficiently collect light without spoiling the emitter quantum efficiency. Our simulations indicate potential fluorescence rate enhancements of 3 orders of magnitude over the entire optical frequency range.
We show that a nonlinear metallo-dielectric layered slab of subwavelength thickness and very small average dielectric permittivity displays optical multistable behavior at arbitrary low optical intensities. This is due to the fact that, in the presence of the small linear permittivity, one of the multiple electromagnetic slab states exists no matter how small is the transmitted optical intensity. We prove that multiple states at ultra-low optical intensities can be reached only by simultaneously operating on the incident optical intensity and incidence angle. By performing full wave simulation…
The asymptotic closed-form solution to the fundamental diffraction problem of a linear horizontal Hertzian dipole radiating over the metallo-dielectric interface is provided. For observation points just above the interface, we confirm that the total surface near-field is the sum of two components: a long-range surface plasmon polariton and a short-range radiative cylindrical wave. The relative phases, amplitudes and damping functions of each component are quantitatively elucidated through simple analytic expressions for the entire range of propagation: near and asymptotic. Validation of the an…
We analyze the impact of nonlocality on the waveguide modes of metallo-dielectric multilayers and optical patch antennas, the latter formed from metal strips closely spaced above a metallic plane. We model both the nonlocal effects associated with the conduction electrons of the metal, as well as the previously overlooked response of bound electrons. We show that the fundamental mode of a metal-dielectric-metal waveguide, sometimes called the gap-plasmon, is very sensitive to nonlocality when the insulating, dielectric layers are thinner than 5 nm. We suggest that optical patch antennas, which…
One of the most appealing aspects of photonic crystal structures is the photonic bandgap created in structures with sufficiently high dielectric contrasts between constituent materials. Understanding how specific photonic crystal structures and their associated stopband positions can selectively interfere with incoming light is vital for implementing these structured dielectrics in a range of optical applications. Metallo-dielectric photonic crystals act to incorporate metal particles into the ordered arrangement of these structures. We examined copper, nickel and gold metal infiltration into …
We devise new optical antennas that reduce the excited-state radiative lifetimes of emitters to the order of 100 femtoseconds while maintaining quantum efficiencies of about 80% at a broadband operation. Here, we combine metallic nanoparticles with planar dielectric structures and exploit design strategies from plasmonic nanoantennas and concepts from Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics to maximize the local density of states and minimize the nonradiative losses incurred by the metallic constituents. The proposed metallo-dielectric hybrid antennas promise important impact on various fundamental and…
Metasurfaces consisting of hybrid metal/dielectric nanostructures carry advantages of both material platforms. The hybrid structures can not only tightly confine subwavelength electromagnetic fields but also lower the absorption losses. Such optical characteristics are difficult to realize in metamaterials with only metal or dielectric structures. Hybrid designs also expand the scope of material choices and the types of optical modes that can be excited in a metasurface, thereby allowing novel light matter interactions. Here we present a metallo-dielectric hybrid metasurface design consisting …
We discuss propagation effects in realistic, transparent, metallo-dielectric photonic band gap structures in the context of negative refraction and super-resolution in the visible and near infrared ranges. In the resonance tunneling regime, we find that for transverse-magnetic incident polarization, field localization effects contribute to a waveguiding phenomenon that makes it possible for the light to remain confined within a small fraction of a wavelength, without any transverse boundaries, due to the suppression of diffraction. This effect is related to negative refraction of the Poynting …
We investigate theoretically and numerically the photonic band structure in the optical domain of an array of core-shell metal-semiconductor nanowires. Corresponding negative-index photonic bands are calculated, showing isotropic equifrequency surfaces. The effective (negative) electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, retrieved from S parameters, are used to compare the performance of such nanowire arrays with homogeneous media in canonical examples, such as refraction through a prism and flat-lens focusing. Very good agreement is found, indeed confirming the effective medium behavior …
Materials showing electromagnetic properties that are not attainable in naturally occurring media, the so called metamaterials, have been lately, and still are, among the most active fields in optical and materials physics and engineering. Among those properties, one of the most attractive is the sub-diffraction resolving capability predicted for media having index of refraction of -1. Here we propose a fully 3D, isotropic metamaterial with strong electric and magnetic responses in the optical regime, based on spherical metallo-dielectric core-shell nanospheres. The magnetic response stems fro…
A near-field thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system with a multilayer emitter of alternate tungsten and alumina layer is proposed in this paper. The fluctuational electrodynamics along with the dyadic Green function for a multilayered structure is applied to calculate the spectral heat flux, and the charge transport equations are solved to get the photocurrent generation and electrical power output. The spectral heat flux is much enhanced when plain tungsten emitter is replaced with multilayer emitter. The mechanism of surface plasmon polariton coupling in the tungsten thin film, which is responsible…
We propose a novel antenna structure which funnels single photons from a single emitter with unprecedented efficiency into a low-divergence fundamental Gaussian mode. Our device relies on the concept of creating an omnidirectional photonic bandgap to inhibit unwanted large-angle emission and to enhance small-angle defect-guided-mode emission. The new photon collection strategy is intuitively illustrated, rigorously verified and optimized by implementing an efficient body-of-revolution finite-difference time-domain method for in-plane dipole emitters. We investigate a few antenna designs to cov…
It is shown that small inclusions of a low absorbing metal can have a dramatic effect on the photonic band structure. In the case of diamond and zinc-blende photonic crystals, several complete photonic band gaps (CPBG's) can open in the spectrum, between the 2nd-3rd, 5th-6th, and 8th-9th bands. Unlike in the purely dielectric case, in the presence of small inclusions of a low absorbing metal the largest CPBG for a moderate dielectric constant (epsilon<=10) turns out to be the 2nd-3rd CPBG. The 2nd-3rd CPBG is the most important CPBG, because it is the most stable against disorder. For a diamon…
The optical nonlocality in symmetric metal-dielectric multilayer metamaterials is theoretically and experimentally investigated with respect to transverse-magnetic-polarized incident light. A nonlocal effective medium theory is derived from the transfer-matrix method to determine the nonlocal effective permittivity depending on both the frequency and wave vector in a symmetric metal-dielectric multilayer stack. In contrast to the local effective medium theory, our proposed nonlocal effective medium theory can accurately predict measured incident angle-dependent reflection spectra from a fabric…
We present the design, fabrication and performance test of a quasi three-dimensional carpet cloak made of normal dielectric in the microwave regime. Taking advantage of a simple linear coordinate transformation we design a carpet cloak with homogeneous anisotropic medium and then practically realize the device with multilayer of alternating normal dielectric slabs based on the effective medium theory. As a proof-of-concept example, we fabricate the carpet cloak with multilayer of FR4 dielectric slabs with air spacing. The performance of the fabricated design is verified through full-wave numer…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterial slabs at visible frequencies based on metal-dielectric multilayers are experimentally realized. Transmission, reflection and absorption spectra are measured and used to determine the complex refractive indices and the effective permittivities of the ENZ slabs, which agree with the results obtained from both the numerical simulations and the optical nonlocalities analysis. Furthermore, light propagation in ENZ slabs and directional emission from ENZ prisms are also analyzed. The accurate determination of the ENZ wavelength for metal-dielectric multilayer met…
We show that a stack of metal-dielectric nanolayers, in addition to the long- and short-range plasmons, guides also an entire family of modes strongly confined within the multilayer - the bulk plasmon modes. We propose the classification scheme that reflects specific properties of these modes. We report experimental verification of the bulk plasmon modes by measuring modal indices in a structure made of three pairs of silica(29nm)/gold(25nm) layers.
Very weak left/right asymmetry in reflection and transmission is offered by a layer of a topological insulator on top of a layer of an anisotropic dielectric material, but it can be enhanced very significantly by using a periodic multilayer of both types of materials. This is an attractive prospect for realizing one-way terahertz devices, because both types of materials can be grown using standard physical-vapor-deposition techniques.
The concept of the broadband epsilon-near-zero meta-atom consisting of layered stacks with specified metallic filling ratio and thickness is proposed based on the Bergman spectral representation of the effective permittivity. The step-like metal-dielectric multilayer structures are designed to achieve realistic broadband epsilon-near-zero meta-atoms in optical frequency range. These meta-atoms can be integrated as building blocks for unconventional optical components with exotic electromagnetic properties over a wide frequency range, such as the demonstrated broadband directional emission and …
We analyse theoretically for the first time to our knowledge the perfect phase matching of guided TE and TM modes with a multilayer waveguide composed of linear isotropic dielectric materials. Alongside strict investigation into dispersion relations for multilayer systems, we give an explicit qualitative explanation for the phenomenon of mode matching on the basis of the standard one-dimensional homogenization technique, and discuss the minimum number of layers and the refractive index profile for the proposed device scheme. Direct applications of the scheme include polarization-insensitive, i…
We demonstrate numerically the diffraction-free propagation of sub-wavelength sized optical beams through simple elements built of metal-dielectric multilayers. The proposed metamaterial consists of silver and a high refractive index dielectric, and is designed using the effective medium theory as strongly anisotropic and impedance matched to air. Further it is characterised with the transfer matrix method, and investigated with FDTD. The diffraction-free behaviour is verified by the analysis of FWHM of PSF in the function of the number of periods. Small reflections, small attenuation, and red…
The giant optical nonlocality near the Dirac point in lossless metal-dielectric multilayer metamaterials is revealed and investigated through the analysis of the band structure of the multilayer stack in the three-dimensional omega-k space, according to the transfer-matrix method with the optical nonlocal effect. The position of the Dirac point is analytically located in the omega-k space. It is revealed that the emergence of the Dirac point is due to the degeneracy of the symmetric and the asymmetric eigenmodes of the coupled surface plasmon polaritons. The optical nonlocality induced epsilon…
We investigate the resolution and absorption losses of a Ag/GaP multilayer superlens. For a fixed source to image distance the resolution is independent of the position of the lens but the losses depend strongly on the lens placement. The absorption losses associated with the evanescent waves can be significantly larger than losses associated with the propagating waves especially when the superlens is close to the source. The interpretation of transmittance values greater than unity for evanescent waves is clarified with respect to the associated absorption losses.
We experimentally demonstrate the effect of anomalous breakdown of the effective medium approximation in all-dielectric deeply subwavelength thickness ($d \simλ/160-λ/30$) multilayers, as recently predicted theoretically [H.H. Sheinfux et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 243901 (2014)]. Multilayer stacks are composed of alternating alumina and titania layers fabricated using atomic layer deposition. For light incident on such multilayers at angles near the total internal reflection we observe pronounced differences in the reflectance spectra for structures with 10-nm versus 20-nm thick layers, as we…
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
Multilayered structures consisting of alternating negative-permittivity and dielectric layers are explored to obtain high-resolution imaging of subwavelength objects. The peaks with the smallest |ky| (ky is the transverse wave vector) on the transmission curves, which come from the guided modes of the multilayered structures, can not be completely damped by material loss. This makes the amplitudes of the evanescent waves around these peaks inappropriate after transmitted through the imaging structures, and the imaging quality is not good. To solve such a problem, the permittivity of the dielec…
Metal-dielectric layered stacks for imaging with sub-wavelength resolution are regarded as linear isoplanatic systems - a concept popular in Fourier Optics and in scalar diffraction theory. In this context, a layered flat lens is a one-dimensional spatial filter characterised by the point spread function. However, depending on the model of the source, the definition of the point spread function for multilayers with sub-wavelength resolution may be formulated in several ways. Here, a distinction is made between a soft source and hard electric or magnetic sources. Each of these definitions leads…
Multiple p- and s-polarized compound surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves at a fixed frequency can be guided by a structure consisting of a metal layer sandwiched between a homogeneous isotropic dielectric (HID) material and a periodic multilayered isotropic dielectric (PMLID) material. For any thickness of the metal layer, at least one compound SPP wave must exist. It possesses the p-polarization state, is strongly bound to the metal/HID interface when the metal thickness is large but to both metal/dielectric interfaces when the metal thickness is small. When the metal layer vanishes, this c…
In this article, it has been theoretically shown that broad angle negative refraction is possible with asymmetric anisotropic metamaterials constructed by only dielectrics or loss less semiconductors at the telecommunication and relative wavelength range. Though natural uniaxial materials can exhibit negative refraction, the maximum angle of negative refraction and critical incident angle lie in a very narrow range. This notable problem can be overcome by our proposed structure. In our structures, negative refraction originates from the highly asymmetric elliptical iso-frequency.This is artifi…
Imaging with a layered superlens is a spatial filtering operation characterized by the point spread function (PSF). We show that in the same optical system the image of a narrow sub-wavelength Gaussian incident field may be surprisingly dissimilar to the PSF, and the width of PSF is not a straightforward measure of resolution. FWHM or std. dev. of PSF give ambiguous information about the actual resolution, and imaging of objects smaller than the FWHM of PSF is possible. A multiscale analysis of imaging gives good insight into the peculiar scale-dependent properties of sub-wavelength imaging.
Black phosphorus (BP) as a promising two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical properties constitutes an excellent building block in multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials. In this work, we design a multilayer structure composed of BP/dielectric layer stacking unit cells patterned on a gold mirror and theoretically demonstrate the tunable anisotropic absorption in the infrared regime. The electric dipole resonance between the adjacent unit cells drives the structure in the critical coupling state, and impedance of the structure matches to that of free space, showing the perfect absorpti…
In this Letter, we investigate the group delay of optical pulses through multilayer dielectric mirrors (MDM) combined with gravitational wave (GW). We find that the delay increases linearly with MDM length for the transmitted wave packet, whereas the Hartman effect disappears. Our study provides insight into the nature of both quantum tunnelling and GW.
The phenomenon of trapping broad spectrum of light is known as `rainbow trapping' and achieved using all-dielectric, hybrid metallo-dielectric or all-metallic configurations. In the latter cases, unavoidable ohmic losses result in sub-picosecond trapped-mode lifetimes. For all practical purposes, novel strategies are required to be devised for trapping and subsequently, releasing broadband electromagnetic (em) field with lifetime > 1 ps. We present a rainbow trapping configuration using the excitation of multiple optical Tamm (OT) modes in an one-dimensional chirped photonic crystal (PC) desig…

We propose a parity-time symmetric dielectric-nanofilm-dielectric multilayered structure that could facilitate highly amplified transmission of optical power in the infrared spectrum. We have theoretically studied our model using the transfer matrix formalism. The reflection and the transmission coefficients of the S-matrix are evaluated. The theoretical results are validated by FDTD numerical simulation. We have shown how the thickness of the layers and the gain/loss coefficient of the active layers could generate spectral singularities in the S-matrix and how these singularities could be exp…
Small form-factor, narrowband, and highly directive antennas are of critical importance in a variety of applications spanning wireless communications, remote sensing, Raman spectroscopy, and single photon emission enhancement. Surprisingly, we show that the classical directivity limit can be appreciably surpassed for electrically small multilayer spherical antennas excited by a point electric dipole even if limiting ourselves to purely dielectric materials. Experimentally feasible designs of superdirective antennas are established by using a stochastic optimization algorithm combined with a ri…
Engineering plasmonic metamaterials with anisotropic optical dispersion enables us to tailor the properties of metamaterial-based waveguides. We investigate plasmonic waveguides with dielectric cores and multilayer metal-dielectric claddings with hyperbolic dispersion. Without using any homogenization, we calculate the resonant eigenmodes of the finite-width cladding layers, and find agreement with the resonant features in the dispersion of the cladded waveguides. We show that at the resonant widths, the propagating modes of the waveguides are coupled to the cladding eigenmodes and hence, are …
We theoretically investigate general existence conditions for broadband bulk large-wavevector (high-k) propagating waves (such as volume plasmon polaritons in hyperbolic metamaterials) in subwavelength periodic multilayer structures. Describing the elementary excitation in the unit cell of the structure by a generalized resonance pole of a reflection coefficient, and using Bloch's theorem, we derive analytical expressions for the band of large-wavevector propagating solutions. We apply our formalism to determine the high-k band existence in two important cases: the well-known metal-dielectric,…
Negative refraction is known to occur in materials that simultaneously possess a negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability; hence they are termed negative index materials. However, there are no known natural materials that exhibit a negative index of refraction. In large part, interest in these materials is due to speculation that they could be used as perfect lenses with superresolution. We propose a new way of achieving negative refraction with currently available technology, based on transparent, metallo-dielectric multilayer structures. The advantage of these structures is t…
We design a plasmonic fiber waveguide (PFW) composed of coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers in nanoscale, and constitute the corresponding dynamical equations describing the modes of propagation in the PFW with the Kerr nonlinearity in the dielectric layers. The physics is connected to the discrete matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equations, from which the highly confined ring-like solitons in scale of subwavelength are found both for the visible light and the near-infrared light in the self-defocusing condition. Moreover, the confinement could be further improved when increasing the …
We theoretically demonstrate negative refraction and sub-wavelength resolution below the diffraction limit in the UV and extreme UV ranges using semiconductors. The metal-like re-sponse of typical semiconductors such as GaAs or GaP makes it possible to achieve negative refraction and super-guiding in resonant semiconductor/dielectric multilayer stacks, similar to what has been demonstrated in metallo-dielectric photonic band gap structures. The exploita-tion of this basic property in semiconductors raises the possibility of new, yet-untapped ap-plications in the UV and soft x-ray ranges.
We investigate the spectral properties of one-dimensional multilayer structures for the two polarizations TE and TM. We give a physical explanation for the large spatial transmission band that can be obtained with this kind of system, and the correlated super resolution effect. We also suggest a designing approach to build 1D metal-dielectric multilayer structures that have super resolution.
We show that dielectric or even perfectly conducting cylinders can be cloaked by a uniform or a layered dielectric cladding, without the need of any exotic or magnetic material parameters. In particular, we start by presenting a simple analytical concept that can accurately describe the cloaking effect obtained with conical silver plates in the visible spectrum. The modeled structure has been originally presented in [S. A. Tretyakov, P. Alitalo, O. Luukkonen, C. R. Simovski, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 103, p. 103905, 2009], where its operation as a cloak in the optical frequencies was studied only…
Highly-anisotropic plasmonic nanotubes exhibit a dramatic drop of the scattering cross section in the transition regime from hyperbolic to elliptic dispersion. The characterization of a realistic multilayered metamaterial is typically carried out by means of an effective medium approach providing average components of the permittivity tensor and wave fields. Here, the edge effects of the metal-dielectric stratified nanotube for different combinations were thoroughly analyzed. We show how the boundary layers, which in principle remain fully irrelevant in the estimation of the effective permitti…
We study the electromagnetic scattering by multilayered biperiodic aggregates of dielectric layers and gratings of conducting plates. We show that the characteristic lengths of such structures provide a good control of absorption bands. The influence of the physical parameters of the problem (sizes, impedances) is discussed.
We demonstrate theoretically a strong local enhancement of the intensity of the in-plane microwave magnetic field in multilayered structures made from a magneto-insulating yttrium iron garnet (YIG) layer sandwiched between two non-magnetic layers with a high dielectric constant matching that of YIG. The enhancement is predicted for the excitation regime when the microwave magnetic field is induced inside the multilayer by the transducer of a stripline Broadband Ferromagnetic Resonance (BFMR) setup. By means of a rigorous numerical solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation consistently w…
Normal-incidence transmission and dispersion properties of optical multilayers and one-dimensional stepwise potential barriers in the non-tunneling regime are analytically investigated. The optical paths of every constituent layer in a multilayer structure, as well as the parameters of every step of the stepwise potential barrier, are constrained by a generalized quarter-wave condition. No other restrictions on the structure geometry is imposed, i.e., the layers are arranged arbitrarily. We show that the density of states (DOS) spectra of the multilayer or barrier in question are subject to in…
We have fabricated a layered nano-composite by alternating metal and gain medium layers, the gain dielectric consisting of a polymer incorporating optically pumped dye molecules. Exploiting an improved version of the effective medium theory, we have chosen the layers thicknesses for achieving a very small value of the real part of the permittivity epsilon_\| (parallel to the layers plane) at a prescribed visible wavelength. From standard reflection-transmission experiments on the optically pumped sample we show that, at a visible wavelength, both the real and the imaginary parts of the permitt…
Multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials consisting of alternating metal and dielectric layers have important applications in spontaneous emission enhancement. In contrast to the conventional choice of at least dozens of layers in multilayer structures to achieve tunable Purcell effect on quantum emitters, our numerical calculations reveal that multilayers with fewer layers and thinner layers would outperform in Purcell effect. These discoveries are attributed to the negative contributions by an increasing layer number to the imaginary part of the reflection coefficient, and the stronger coupling b…
Substantial enhancement of nonlinear high-order harmonics generation based on Fano-resonant nanostructures has received growing interest due to their promising potential for developing integrated and advanced next-generation nanophotonic devices. In this study, going beyond conventional subwavelength structures, we propose an optothermally functional hetero-metallodielectric asymmetric eight-member octamer cluster composed of a central silicon nanodisk and peripheral disks with a phase-change material (Ge2Sb2Te5). Using full electromagnetic calculations, we show that in the amorphous phase of …

We describe the change of the spatial distribution of the state of polarisation occurring during two-dimensional imaging through a multilayer and in particular through a layered metallic flat lens. Linear or circular polarisation of incident light is not preserved due to the difference in the amplitude transfer functions for the TM and TE polarisations. In effect, the transfer function and the point spread function that characterize 2D imaging through a multilayer both have a matrix form and cross-polarisation coupling is observed for spatially modulated beams with a linear or circular inciden…
