Context: Over the last decade, several groups of young (mainly low-mass) stars have been discovered in the solar neighbourhood (closer than ~100 pc), thanks to cross-correlation between X-ray, optical spectroscopy and kinematic data. These young local associations -- including an important fraction whose members are Hipparcos stars -- offer insights into the star formation process in low-density environments, shed light on the substellar domain, and could have played an important role in the recent history of the local interstellar medium. Aims: To study the kinematic evolution of young local associations and their relation to other young stellar groups and structures in the local interstellar medium, thus casting new light on recent star formation processes in the solar neighbourhood. Methods: We compiled the data published in the literature for young local associations. Using a realistic Galactic potential we integrated the orbits for these associations and the Sco-Cen complex back in time. Results: Combining these data with the spatial structure of the Local Bubble and the spiral structure of the Galaxy, we propose a recent history of star formation in the solar neighbourhood. We suggest that both the Sco-Cen complex and young local associations originated as a result of the impact of the inner spiral arm shock wave against a giant molecular cloud. The core of the giant molecular cloud formed the Sco-Cen complex, and some small cloudlets in a halo around the giant molecular cloud formed young local associations several million years later. We also propose a supernova in young local associations a few million years ago as the most likely candidate to have reheated the Local Bubble to its present temperature.
We explore the star formation history of the Upper Scorpius OB association, the youngest part of Sco OB2. A wide field (160 square-degree) survey for low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars enabled us to increase the number of known low-mass members of Upper Scorpius to nearly 100 stars. In a detailed analysis of the locations of these stars in the HR diagram, taking proper account of the uncertainties and the effects of unresolved binaries, we find a mean stellar age of about 5 Myr and no evidence for a significant age dispersion among these stars. This implies that the star formation history …
In this work we propose a scenario for the history of the recent star formation (during the last 20-30 Myr) in the nearest solar neighbourhood (~150 pc), from the study of the spatial and kinematic properties of the members of the so-called young local associations, the Sco-Cen complex and the Local Bubble, the most important structure observed in the local interstellar medium (ISM).
We are conducting a U,B,R,I monitoring program to identify pre-main sequence stars and brown dwarfs in a 12.5x12.2 square degree region of the Upper Scorpius OB association (5-10 Myr). We will use these data in combination with a follow-up spectroscopy survey to derive the low mass IMF in Upper Sco and to explore the prevalence of 5-10 Myr circumstellar disks. We will also analyze the spatial distribution of association members as a function of stellar mass, from which we will be able to place constraints on brown dwarf formation scenarios. We expect to identify 700-1800 previously unknown pre…
We derive single-epoch radial velocities for a sample of 56 B-type stars members of the subgroups Upper Scorpius, Upper Centaurus Lupus and Lower Centaurus Crux of the nearby Sco-Cen OB association. The radial velocity measurements were obtained by means of high-resolution echelle spectra via analysis of individual lines. The internal accuracy obtained in the measurements is estimated to be typically 2-3 km/s, but depends on the projected rotational velocity of the target. Radial velocity measurements taken for 2-3 epochs for the targets HD120307, HD142990 and HD139365 are variable and confirm…
We summarize observational results on the stellar population and star formation history of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association (Sco OB2), the nearest region of recent massive star formation. It consists of three subgroups, Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL), and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC) which have ages of about 5, 17, and 16 Myr. In Upper Scorpius, numerous studies have recently revealed hundreds of low-mass association members, including dozens of brown dwarfs. The empirical mass function could be established over the full stellar mass range from 0.1 M_sun up to 20 M_sun, an…
We review topics related to the dispersal of young stars from their birth-sites, and focus in particular on the entourage of young stars related to the ongoing star-formation event in the Sco-Cen OB association. We conduct a follow-up kinematic study to that presented in Mamajek, Lawson, & Feigelson (2000; ApJ 544, 356) amongst nearby, isolated, young stars. In addition to the eta Cha and TW Hya groups, we find several more intriguing Sco-Cen outlier candidates: most notably beta Pic, PZ Tel, HD 199143, and HD 100546. We discuss the connection between Sco-Cen and the southern ``150 pc Conspira…
A fine structure related to the kinematic peculiarities of three components of the Scorpius-Centaurus association (LCC, UCL, and US) has been revealed in the UV-velocity distribution of Gould Belt stars. We have been able to identify the most likely members of these groups by applying the method of analyzing the two-dimensional probability density function of stellar UV velocities that we developed. A kinematic analysis of the identified structural components has shown that, in general, the center--of--mass motion of the LCC, UCL, and US groups follows the motion characteristic of the Gould Be…
The Upper-Scorpius association is the OB association nearest to the Sun (145 pc). Its young age (5 Myr) makes it an ideal place to search for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, as these objects should be relatively bright. We have performed a photometric search for the low-mass members of the association, using the R, I, and Z filters. The completeness limit is I=18.5 and the saturation limit is I=13. We obtain 138 candidate members, covering nearly the entire M spectral type range. We find an excess of brown dwarf candidates over the number predicted by a Miller-Scalo Initial Mass Function. In …
We present near-infrared (1.15-2.50 microns) medium-resolution (R = 1700) spectroscopy of a sample of 23 brown dwarf candidates in the young Upper Sco association. We confirm membership of 21 brown dwarfs based on their spectral shape, comparison with field dwarfs, and presence of weak gravity-sensitive features. Their spectral types range from M8 to L2 with an uncertainty of a subclass, suggesting effective temperatures between 2700 and 1800 K with an uncertainty up to 300 K and masses in the 30-8 Mjup range. Among the non-members, we have uncovered a field L2 dwarf at a distance of 120-140 p…
The sample of 115 B-type stars in Sco OB2 association is examined for existence of visual companions with ADONIS near-infrared adaptive optics system and coronograph in J and K bands. Practically all components in the separation range 0.3"-6" (45-900 A.U.) were detected, with magnitudes down to K=16. The K and J-K photometry of primaries and differential photometry and astrometry of 96 secondaries are presented. Ten secondaries are new physical components, as inferred from photometric and statistical criteria, while remaining are faint background stars. After small correction for detection inc…
We present the results of a 9.3 square degree infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Scorpius association extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey Early Data Release. We have selected a total of 112 candidates from the ($Z-J$,$Z$) colour-magnitude diagram over the Z=12.5-20.5 magnitude range, corresponding to M = 0.25-0.01 Msun at an age of 5 Myr and a distance of 145 pc. Additional photometry in J and K filters revealed most of them as reddened stars, leaving 32 possible members. Among them, 15 have proper motion consistent with higher mass members from…
We describe our method to find the primordial binary population in the Sco OB2 association. We present the results of our ADONIS and VLT/NACO near-infrared adaptive optics binarity surveys of A and late-B stars in Sco OB2. We combine these results with literature data on visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric binary stars. With our observations we remove part of the selection effects present in the combined dataset. Using simulated observations the remaining biases can be removed in order to derive the true binary population. Detailed N-body simulations, including stellar and binary evolution …
Observations over the last decade have indicated that a large fraction of the stars are part of a binary or multiple system. For our understanding of star formation it is therefore of crucial importance to characterise the outcome of the star forming process in terms of binary parameters. This thesis describes the recovery of the primordial binary population in the nearby OB association Sco OB2. The current binary population in Sco OB2 is first recovered using two adaptive optics surveys (ADONIS, NAOS-CONICA), a literature study, and a detailed analysis of the selection effects of visual, spec…
We present continued results from a wide-field, ~150 deg^2, optical photometric and spectroscopic survey of the northern part of the ~5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius OB Association. Photometry and spectral types were used to derive effective temperatures and luminosities and place newly identified association members onto a theoretical Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. From our survey, we have discovered 145 new low mass members of the association, and determined ~10% of these objects to be actively accreting material from a surrounding circumstellar disk. Based on comparison of the spatial distributions …
We present 4.5, 8, and 16um photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope for 204 stars in the Upper Scorpius OB Association. The data are used to investigate the frequency and properties of circumstellar disks around stars with masses between ~ 0.1 and 20 Msun at an age of ~ 5 Myr. We identify 35 stars that have emission at 8um or 16um in excess of the stellar photosphere. The lower mass stars (~ 0.1-1.2 Msun) appear surrounded by primordial optically thick disks based on the excess emission characteristics. Stars more massive than ~ 1.8 Msun have lower fractional excess luminosities suggesting…
A young, nearby compact aggregate of X-ray emitting pre-main sequence stars was recently discovered in the vicinity of eta Cha (B8V). In this paper, we further investigate this cluster: its membership, its environs and origins. ROSAT HRI X-ray data for the cluster's T Tauri stars show high levels of magnetic activity and variability. The cluster has an anomalous X-ray luminosity function compared to other young clusters, deficient in stars with low, but detectable X-ray luminosities. This suggests that many low-mass members have escaped the surveyed core region. Photographic photometry from th…
We characterize the binary population in the young and nearby OB association Scorpius OB2 using available observations of visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric binaries with intermediate-mass primaries. We take into account observational biases by comparing the observations with simulated observations of model associations. The available data indicate a large binary fraction (> 70% with 3sigma confidence), with a large probability that all intermediate mass stars in Sco OB2 are part of a binary system. The binary systems have a mass ratio distribution of the form f(q) ~ q^-0.4. Sco OB2 has a …

These young local associations offer insights into the star formation process in low-density environments, shed light on the substellar domain, and could have played an important role in the recent history of the local interstellar medium. We present the results of a radial velocity (RV) survey of 14 brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low-mass (VLM) stars in the Upper Scorpius OB association (UScoOB) and 3 BD candidates in the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud core. We obtained high-resolution echelle spectra at the Very Large Telescope using Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at two different epochs for each object, and measured the shifts in their RVs to identify candidates for binary/multiple systems in the sample. The average time separation of the RV measurements is 21.6d, and our survey is sensitive to the binaries with sep…
For understanding the process of star formation it is essential to know how many stars are formed as singles or in multiple systems, as a function of environment and binary parameters. This requires a characterization of the primordial binary population, which we define as the population of binaries that is present just after star formation has ceased, but before dynamical and stellar evolution have significantly altered its characteristics. In this article we present the first results of our adaptive optics survey of 200 (mainly) A-type stars in the nearby OB association Sco OB2. We report th…
We report the evidence that several low-mass stars (<~0.4 Msun) of the Orion and Upper Scorpius clusters have lithium abundances well below the interstellar value. Due to time-dependent depletion, our result implies stellar ages greater than ~5 Myr, suggesting that star formation has been proceeding for a long time in these systems.
We investigate the rotational velocities of early-type stars in the Sco OB2 association. We measure \vsini\ for 156 established and probable members of the association. The measurements are performed with three different techniques, which are in increasing order of expected \vsini: 1) converting the widths of spectral lines directly to \vsini, 2) comparing artificially broadened spectra of low \vsini\ stars to the target spectrum, 3) comparing the \ionI{He}4026\ line profile to theoretical models. The sample is extended with literature data for 47 established members of Sco OB2. Analysis of th…
We report the results of an analysis of the hierarchical properties of the cluster of galaxies Abell 119. Observational data from the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS) are used, complemented by data from previous studies, while the analysis is performed with the S-tree method. The main physical system and its three subgroups with truncated Gaussian velocity distributions are identified; due to their remarkable physical features and possible cosmogonical mission we call these subgroups ``galaxy associations''. The mass centre of the core of main system is shown to coincide with the X-ray …
We propose a new approach for studying the neutron star/supernova remnant associations, based on the idea that the supernova remnants (SNRs) can be products of an off-centered supernova (SN) explosion in a preexisting bubble created by the wind of a moving massive star. A cavity SN explosion of a moving star results in a considerable offset of the neutron star (NS) birth-place from the geometrical center of the SNR. Therefore: a) the high transverse velocities inferred for a number of NSs through their association with SNRs can be reduced; b) the proper motion vector of a NS should not necessa…
A group of young, active stars in the vicinity of TW Hydrae has recently been identified as a possible physical association with a common origin. Given its proximity ($\sim$50 pc), age ($\sim$10 Myr) and abundance of binary systems, the TW Hya Association is ideally suited to studies of diversity and evolution of circumstellar disks. Here we present mid-infrared observations of 15 candidate members of the group, 11 of which have no previous flux measurements at wavelengths longer than 2$μ$m. We report the discovery of a possible 10$μ$m excess in CD -33$^{\circ}$7795, which may be due to a circ…
We discuss observational evidence for sequential and triggered star formation in OB associations. We first review the star formation process in the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, the nearest OB association to the Sun, where several recent extensive studies have allowed us to reconstruct the star formation history in a rather detailed way. We then compare the observational results with those obtained for other OB associations and with recent models of rapid cloud and star formation in the turbulent interstellar medium. We conclude that the formation of whole OB subgroups (each consisting of…
A review of star formation in the Rho Ophiuchi molecular complex is presented, with particular emphasis on studies of the main cloud, L1688, since 1991. Recent photometric and parallax measurements of stars in the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco-Cen OB association suggest a distance for the cloud between 120 and 140 parsecs. Star formation is ongoing in the dense cores of L1688 with a median age for young stellar objects of 0.3 Myr. The surface population appears to have a median age of 2-5 Myr and merges with low mass stars in the Upper Scorpius subgroup. Making use of the most recent X-ra…
Radial motions of stars in nearby moving clusters are determined from accurate proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes, without any use of spectroscopy. Assuming that cluster members share the same velocity vector (apart from a random dispersion), we apply a maximum-likelihood method on astrometric data from Hipparcos to compute radial and space velocities (and their dispersions) in the Ursa Major, Hyades, Coma Berenices, Pleiades, and Praesepe clusters, and for the alpha Persei, Scorpius-Centaurus, and `HIP 98321' associations. The radial motion of the Hyades cluster is determined to with…
