A simple explicit example of a Roberts-type dynamo is given in which the alpha-effect of mean-field electrodynamics exists in spite of point-wise vanishing kinetic helicity of the fluid flow. In this way it is shown that alpha-effect dynamos do not necessarily require non-zero kinetic helicity. A mean-field theory of Roberts-type dynamos is established within the framework of the second-order correlation approximation. In addition numerical solutions of the original dynamo equations are given, that are independent of any approximation of that kind. Both theory and numerical results demonstrate the possibility of dynamo action in the absence of kinetic helicity.
Nonlinear behaviour of galactic dynamos is studied, allowing for magnetic helicity removal by the galactic fountain flow. A suitable advection speed is estimated, and a one-dimensional mean-field dynamo model with dynamic alpha-effect is explored. It is shown that the galactic fountain flow is efficient in removing magnetic helicity from galactic discs. This alleviates the constraint on the galactic mean-field dynamo resulting from magnetic helicity conservation and thereby allows the mean magnetic field to saturate at a strength comparable to equipartition with the turbulent kinetic energy.
Magnetic fields correlated on kiloparsec scales are seen in spiral galaxies. Their origin could be due to amplification of a small seed field by a turbulent galactic dynamo. We review the current status of the galactic dynamo, especially the constraints imposed by magnetic helicity conservation. We estimate the minimal strength of the large-scale magnetic field which could arise inspite of the helicity constraint.

We demonstrate that the inclusion of the helicity flux in the magnetic helicity balance in the nonlinear stage of galactic dynamo action results in a radical change in the magnetic field dynamics. The equilibrium value of the large-scale magnetic field is then approximately the equipartition level. This is in contrast to the situation without the flux of helicity, when the magnetic helicity is conserved locally, which leads to substantially subequipartition values for the equilibrium large-scale magnetic field.
Magnetic helicity effects are discussed in laboratory and astrophysical settings. First, dynamo action in Taylor-Green flows is discussed for different boundary conditions. However, because of the lack of scale separation with respect to the container, no large scale field is being produced and there is no resistively slow saturation phase as otherwise expected. Second, the build-up of a large scale field is demonstrated in a simulation where a localized magnetic eddy produces field on a larger scale if the eddy possesses a swirl. We study a simple model for the solar dynamo in the framework of the Parker migratory dynamo, with a nonlinear dynamo saturation mechanism based on magnetic helicity conservation arguments. We find a parameter range in which the model demonstrates a cyclic behaviour with properties similar to that of Parker dynamo with the simplest form of algebraic alpha-quenching. We compare the nonlinear current helicity evolution in this model with data for the current helicity evolution obtained during 10 years of observations at the Huairou Solar Station of China. The motivation for considering distributed large scale dynamos in the solar context is reviewed in connection with the magnetic helicity constraint. Preliminary accounts of 3-dimensional direct numerical simulations (in spherical shell segments) and simulations of 2-dimensional mean field models (in spherical shells) are presented. Interesting similarities as well as some differences are noted.
Magnetic helicity is nearly conserved and its evolution equation provides a dynamical feedback on the alpha effect that is distinct from the conventional algebraic alpha quenching. The seriousness of this dynamical alpha quenching is particularly evident in the case of closed or periodic boxes. We study effects of kinetic helicity fluctuations in a turbulence with large-scale shear using two different approaches: the spectral tau-approximation and the second order correlation approximation (or first-order smoothing approximation). Dynamo action is investigated in simulations of locally isotropic and homogeneous turbulence in a slab between open boundaries. It is found that a `pseudo-vacuum' boundary condition (where the field is vertical) leads to strong helicity fluxes which significantly reduce the amplitude of the resulting large scale field. We present a simple semi-analytical model of nonlinear, mean-field galactic dynamos and use it to study the effects of various magnetic helicity fluxes. Dynamos in astrophysical disks are usually explained in terms of the standard alpha-omega mean field dynamo model where the local helicity generates a radial field component from an azimuthal field. The subsequent shearing of the radial field gives rise to exponentially growing dynamo modes. There are several problems with this model. The exponentiation time for the galactic dynamo is hard to calculate, but is probably uncomfortably long. It is shown that the turbulent dynamo $α$-effect converts magnetic helicity from the turbulent field to the mean field when the turbulence is electromagnetic while the magnetic helicity of the mean-field is transported across space when the turbulence is electrostatic or due to the electron diamagnetic effect. In all cases, however, the dynamo effect strictly conserves the total helicity except for resistive effects and a small battery effect. Implications for astrophysical situations, especially for the solar dynamo, are discussed.

We have extended our previous mean-field galactic dynamo model which included algebraic and dynamic alpha nonlinearities (Kleeorin et al., A&A, v. 387, 453, 2002), to include also a quenching of turbulent diffusivity. We readily obtain equilibrium states for the large-scale magnetic field in the local disc dynamo model, and these fields have strengths that are comparable to the equipartition field strength. After some initial exponential growth, the magnetic field develops a large scale travelling wave pattern. The effect of shear on the growth of large scale magnetic fields in helical turbulence is investigated. The resulting large-scale magnetic field is also helical and continues to evolve, after saturation of the small scale field, on a slow resistive time scale. This is a consequence of magnetic helicity conservation. Because of shear, the time scale needed to reach an equipartition-strength large scale field is shortened proportionally to the ratio of the resulting toroidal to poloidal large scale fields.
The possibility of non-helical large scale dynamo action is investigated using three-dimensional simulations of global accretion discs as well as idealized local simulations without rotation and only shear. We analyse the role of a fluctuating alpha-effect in alpha-omega dynamo models, and show that there is a mechanism for magnetic field generation, valid at large scale separation, deriving from the interaction of mean shear and a fluctuating alpha-effect. It is shown that this effect can act as a dynamo even in the absence of a mean alpha-effect, and that the timescale for dynamo waves is strongly affected by the presence of fluctuations.
We generalize the derivation of dynamo coefficient $α$ of Field et al (1999) to include the following two aspects: first, the de-correlation times of velocity field and magnetic field are different; second, the magnetic Prandtl number can be arbitrary. Three closely related stumbling blocks of solar mean field dynamo theory are discussed: how dominant are the small scale fields, how is the alpha effect quenched, and whether magnetic and current helicity fluxes alleviate the quenching? A number of problems of solar and stellar dynamo theory are briefly reviewed and the current status of possible solutions is discussed. Results of direct numerical simulations are described in view of mean-field dynamo theory and the relation between the alpha-effect and the inverse cascade of magnetic helicity is highlighted. The possibility of `catastrophic' quenching of the alpha-effect is explained in terms of the constraint placed by the conservation of magnetic helicity.

In this model the fluid helicity plays a small role in large scale magnetic field generation. Astrophysical objects with negligible resistivity are often threaded by large scale magnetic fields. The generation of these fields is somewhat mysterious, since a magnetic field in a perfectly conducting fluid cannot change the flux threading a fluid element, or the field topology. The magnetic helicity has paramount significance in nonlinear saturation of galactic dynamo. We argue that the magnetic helicity conservation is violated at the lepton stage in the evolution of early Universe. As a result, a cosmological magnetic field which can be a seed for the galactic dynamo obtains from the beginning a substantial magnetic helicity which has to be taken into account in the magnetic helicity balance at the later stage of galactic dynamo.

Calculations for mean field dynamo models (in both full spheres and spherical shells), with both algebraic and dynamic $α$--quenchings, show qualitative as well as quantitative differences and similarities in the dynamical behaviour of these models. We summarise and enhance recent results with extra examples. Overall, the effect of using a dynamic $α$ appears to be complicated and is affected by the region of parameter space examined.
The possibility of the magnetic flux expulsion from the Galaxy in the superbubble (SB) explosions, important for the Alpha-Omega dynamo, is considered. Special emphasis is put on the investigation of the downsliding of the matter from the top of the shell formed by the SB explosion which is able to influence the kinematics of the shell. It is shown that either Galactic gravity or the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities in the shell limit the SB expansion, thus, making impossible magnetic flux expulsion. In numerical studies of turbulence, hyperviscosity is often used as a tool to extend the inertial subrange and to reduce the dissipative subrange. By analogy, hyperdiffusivity (or hyperresistivity) is sometimes used in magnetohydrodynamics. The underlying assumption is that only the small scales are affected by this manipulation. We develop a model based on 3D mean-field MHD for the generation of large scale magnetic fields in fully convective objects like low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and possibly gaseous planets. The dynamo process is of alpha^2 type and thus differs from the shell-dynamo at work in more massive stars.The alpha^2 dynamo becomes supercritical for Rossby numbers Ro\la 10. It generates a large-scale, non-axisymmetric, steady field that is symmetric with respect to the equatorial plane. The origin and sustenance of large scale galactic magnetic fields has been a long standing and controversial astrophysical problem. Here an alternative to the ``standard'' $\a-Ω$ mean field dynamo and primordial theories is pursued. The steady supply of supernovae induced turbulence exponentiates the total field energy, providing a significant seed mean field that can be linearly stretched by shear. Turbulence with a large magnetic Reyonolds number, generically leads to rapidly growing magnetic noise over and above any mean field. We revisit the dynamics of this fluctuating field, in homogeneous, isotropic, helical turbulence. Assuming the turbulence to be Markovian, we first rederive, in a fairly transparent manner, the equation for the mean field, and corrected Fokker-Plank type equations for the magnetic correlations.
