We study the complementarity between the indirect detection of dark matter with gamma-rays in H.E.S.S. and the supersymmetry searches with ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider in the Focus Point region within the mSUGRA framework. The sensitivity of the central telescope of the H.E.S.S. II experiment with an energy threshold of ~ 20 GeV is investigated. We show that the detection of gamma-ray fluxes of O(10^-12) cm-2s-1 with H.E.S.S. II covers a substantial part of the Focus Point region which may be more difficult for LHC experiments. Despite the presence of multi-TeV scalars, we show that LHC will be sensitive to a complementary part of this region through three body NLSP leptonic decays. This interesting complementarity between H.E.S.S. II and LHC searches is further highlighted in terms of the gluino mass and the two lightest neutralino mass difference.
Searches for supersymmetry are among the most exciting physics goals at Run II of the Tevatron. In particular, in supersymmetric models with light charginos, neutralinos and sleptons, associated chargino--neutralino production can potentially be observed as multi-lepton events with missing energy. We discuss how, in the generic TeV-scale MSSM, the prospects for these chargino-neutralino searches are impacted by cosmological considerations, namely the neutralino relic abundance and direct detection limits. We also discuss what an observation of chargino-neutralino production at the Tevatron wou…
Theoretical expectations for direct and indirect searches for relic neutralinos are presented. Complementarity among various investigation means is discussed in connection with the values of the neutralino relic abundance.
We calculate the one-loop induced couplings of two gaugino-like neutralinos to the $Z$ and Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. These couplings, which vanish at the tree level, can be generated through loops involving fermions and sfermions. We show that, while the neutralino contribution to the invisible $Z$ boson decay width remains small, the loop induced couplings to the lightest Higgs boson might be sufficiently large to yield a rate of invisible decays of this Higgs boson that should be detectable at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. We also study the implications of these…
There is mounting evidence for dark matter in the Universe and one of the favourite dark matter candidates is the neutralino, which naturally appears as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) in many supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. The neutralino has the desired properties to be a good dark matter candidate and we will here review the different indirect searches for neutralino dark matter and discuss the implications on these from recent direct searches.
The predictions of our previous analyses about possible low-mass (lower than 50 GeV) relic neutralinos are discussed in the light of the most recent results from WIMP direct detection experiments. It is proved that these light neutralinos are quite compatible with the new annual-modulation data of the DAMA Collaboration; our theoretical predictions are also compared with the upper bounds of the CDMS and EDELWEISS Collaborations.
We study the possibility of identifying dark matter properties from XENON-like 100 kg experiments and the GLAST satellite mission. We show that whereas direct detection experiments will probe efficiently light WIMPs, given a positive detection (at the 10% level for $m_χ \lesssim 50$ GeV), GLAST will be able to confirm and even increase the precision in the case of a NFW profile, for a WIMP-nucleon cross-section $σ_{χ-p} \lesssim 10^{-8}$ pb. We also predict the rate of production of a WIMP in the next generation of colliders (ILC), and compare their sensitivity to the WIMP mass with the XENON …
We analyze the antimatter yield of supersymmetric (SUSY) models with large neutralino annihilation cross sections. We introduce three benchmark scenarios, respectively featuring bino, wino and higgsino-like lightest neutralinos, and we study in detail the resulting antimatter spectral features. We carry out a systematic and transparent comparison between current and future prospects for direct detection, neutrino telescopes and antimatter searches. We demonstrate that often, in the models we consider, antimatter searches are the only detection channel which already constrains the SUSY paramete…
A significant lower limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino χcan be obtained by combining the results from sparticle searches at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 172 GeV with cosmological considerations, if it is assumed that the χis stable. Exclusion domains from slepton searches close m_χ\sim 0 loopholes that were left open by previous lower-energy LEP searches for charginos and neutralinos, leading to the lower limit $m_χ\ga 17$ GeV. The constraints on supersymmetric parameter space are strengthened significantly if LEP constraints on supersymmetric Higgs bosons are taken into acco…
Neutralinos are the natural well-motivated candidates to provide the non-baryonic dark matter of the universe which may produce detectable signals through their annihilation into neutrinos, photons or positrons. Due to its high flux sensitivity and low energy threshold, the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope could potentially detect the neutralino annihilation high energy photon products. In the framework of minimal supergravity, the neutralino SUSY parameter space can be scanned in different benchmark scenarios defined after accelerator and cosmology constraints. Moreover, the neutralino density profi…
We examine the current state of neutralino dark matter and consider how the LEP constraints on the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters are squeezing the available dark matter regions. We also show how cosmological constraints augment bounds coming from collider searches to further constrain the MSSM parameter space.
In previous papers we showed that the data of the DAMA/NaI experiment for WIMP direct detection, which indicate a possible annual modulation effect, are widely compatible with an interpretation in terms of a relic neutralino as the major component of dark matter in the Universe. In the present note we discuss the detectability of the relevant supersymmetric neutralino configurations by two of the most promising methods of indirect search for relic particles: measurement of cosmic-ray antiprotons and measurement of neutrino fluxes from Earth and Sun.
The most recent results from direct searches for dark matter particles in the galactic halo are examined in terms of an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model at the electroweak scale without gaugino masses unification. We show that the annual modulation effect at 8.2 $σ$ C.L. recently presented by the DAMA Collaboration, as the result of a combined analysis of the DAMA/NaI and the DAMA/LIBRA experiments for a total exposure of 0.82 ton yr, fits remarkably well with what expected for relic neutralinos for a wide variety of WIMP distribution functions. Bounds derivable…
Searches for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs bosons are among the most promising channels for exploring new physics at the Tevatron. In particular, interesting regions of large $\tan β$ and small $m_A$ are probed by searches for heavy neutral Higgs bosons, A and H, when they decay to $τ^+ τ^-$ and $b\bar{b}$. At the same time, direct searches for dark matter, such as CDMS, attempt to observe neutralino dark matter particles scattering elastically off nuclei. This can occur through t-channel Higgs exchange, which has a large cross section in the case of large $\tan β$ and…
In this article, we explore the interplay between searches for supersymmetric particles and Higgs bosons at hadron colliders (the Tevatron and the LHC) and direct dark matter searches (such as CDMS, ZEPLIN, XENON, EDELWEISS, CRESST, WARP and others). We focus on collider searches for heavy MSSM Higgs bosons ($A$, $H$, $H^{\pm}$) and how the prospects for these searches are impacted by direct dark matter limits and vice versa. We find that the prospects of these two experimental programs are highly interrelated. A positive detection of $A$, $H$ or $H^{\pm}$ at the Tevatron would dramatically en…
We investigate the prospects of indirect searches for supersymmetric neutralino dark matter. Relic neutralinos gravitationally accumulate in the Sun and their annihilations produce high energy neutrinos. Muon neutrinos of this origin can be seen in large detectors like AMANDA, IceCube and ANTARES. We evaluate the relic density and the detection rate in several models---the minimal supersymmetric model, minimal supergravity, and supergravity with non-universal Higgs boson masses at the grand unification scale. We make realistic estimates for the indirect detection rates including effects of the…
We study the phenomenology of neutralino dark matter within generic supersymmetric scenarios where the Gaugino and Higgsino masses are much lighter than the scalar soft breaking masses (Split Supersymmetry). We consider a low-energy model-independent approach and show that the guidelines in the definition of this general framework come from cosmology, which forces the lightest neutralino to have a mass smaller than 2.2 TeV. The testability of the framework is addressed by discussing all viable dark matter detection techniques. Current data on cosmic rays antimatter, gamma-rays and on the abund…
Since the expected rates for neutralino-nucleus scattering are expected to be small, one should exploit all the characteristic signatures of this reaction. Such are: (i) In the standard recoil measurements the modulation of the event rate due to the Earth's motion. (ii) In directional recoil experiments the correlation of the event rate with the sun's motion. One now has both modulation, which is much larger and depends not only on time, but on the direction of observation as well, and a large forward-backward asymmetry. (iii) In non recoil experiments gamma rays following the decay of excited…
The existence of dark matter provides strong evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. Extending the Standard Model with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry and/or supersymmetry, compelling dark matter candidates appear. For the axion, the neutralino, the gravitino, and the axino, I review primordial production mechanisms, cosmological and astrophysical constraints, experimental searches, and prospects for experimental identification.
Dark matter candidates arising in models of particle physics incorporating weak scale supersymmetry may produce detectable signals through their annihilation into neutrinos, photons, or positrons. A large number of relevant experiments are planned or underway. The `logically possible' parameter space is unwieldy. By working in the framework of minimal supergravity, we can survey the implications of the experiments for each other, as well as for direct searches, collider searches, low-energy experiments, and naturalness in a transparent fashion. We find that a wide variety of experiments provid…
We revisit the phenomenology of the Constrained MSSM with right-handed neutrinos (CMSSMRN). A supersymmetric seesaw mechanism, generating neutrino masses and sizable lepton flavour violating (LFV) entries is assumed to be operative. In this scheme, we study the complementarity between the `observable ranges' of various paths leading to the possible discovery of low energy SUSY: the reach of the Cern Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the quest for neutralino dark matter signals and indirect searches through LFV processes. Within the regions of the CMSSMRN parameter space compatible with all cosmo-ph…
The study of the crystal scintillating detector (based on pure CsI) is proposed with the aim of use in future Dark Matter searches. The planned energy range of the recoil nuclei detection between 2 and 40 KeV allows to register neutralino interactions with masses up to 100 GeV/c**2.
Recently the DAMA/NaI Collaboration reported further indication of a possible modulation effect in WIMP direct detection. In this note we discuss the relevance of this result for supersymmetric theories where the neutralino is the dark matter candidate. We specifically consider the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) and Supergravity-inspired schemes, with possible deviations of the unification conditions at the GUT scale in the Higgs sector. The main results of our analysis show that the annual modulation data are widely compatible with an interpretation in terms of …
We consider the SUSY-model neutralino as a dominant Dark Matter particle in the galactic halo and investigate some general issues of direct DM searches via elastic neutralino-nucleus scattering. On the basis of conventional assumptions about the nuclear and nucleon structure, without referring to a specific SUSY-model, we prove that it is impossible in principle to extract more than three constraints on fundamental SUSY-model parameters from the direct Dark matter searches. Three types of Dark matter detectors probing different groups of parameters are recognized.
We open the discussion into how the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) observations of supermassive black-hole (SMBH) mergers (in the mass range ~10^6-10^8 Msun) may be complementary to pulsar timing-based gravitational wave searches. We consider the toy model of determining pulsar distances by exploiting the fact that LISA SMBH inspiral observations can place tight parameter constraints on the signal present in pulsar timing observations. We also suggest, as a future path of research, the use of LISA ring-down observations from the most massive (>~ a few 10^7 Msun) black-hole mergers, …
We report progress in developing a novel antimatter detection scheme. The gaseous antiparticle spectrometer (GAPS) identifies antimatter through the characteristic X-rays emitted by antimatter when it forms exotic atoms in gases. The approach provides large area and field of view, and excellent background rejection capability. If the GAPS concept is successfully demonstrated, then it would be an ideal candidate for space-based, indirect dark matter searches. GAPS can detect antideuterons produced in neutralino annihilations. A modest GAPS experiment can detect the neutralino for all minimal SU…
