Within the frame of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project, we have determined the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas within the central kpc with high spatial resolution (100-150pc), for a sample of active galaxies. The goal is to study the gas-fueling mechanisms in AGN. We present interferometric observations of 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission from the Seyfert2 galaxy NGC6574, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). These data have been combined with 30m mapping data in these lines to correct for the flux resolved by the interferometer. At an angular resolution of 0.7'' (about 110pc), the 12CO(2-1) emission is resolved into an inner disk with a radius of 300pc.
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC3147 of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) sample at 1.8'' x 1.6'' and 1.4'' x 1.2'' resolution respectively. Identifying the presence of a bar in NGC3147 we also compute the gravity torques exerted from the stellar bar on the gas.
We present a comprehensive spectroscopic imaging survey of the distribution and kinematics of atomic hydrogen (HI) in 16 nearby spiral galaxies hosting low luminosity AGN, observed with high spectral and spatial resolution (resolution: ~20 arcsec, 5 km/s) using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA). The sample contains a range of nuclear types, ranging from Seyfert to star-forming nuclei and was originally selected for the NUclei of GAlaxies project (NUGA) - a spectrally and spatially resolved interferometric survey of gas dynamics in nearby galaxies designed to identify the fueling mechanisms of AG…
The NUGA project is a high-resolution (0.5''-1'') CO survey of low luminosity AGN including the full sequence of activity types (Seyferts, LINERs and transition objects). NUGA aims to systematically study the different mechanisms for gas fueling of AGNs in the Local Universe. In this paper we discuss the latest results of this recently completed survey, which now includes newly acquired subarcsec resolution observations for all targets of the sample. The large variety of circumnuclear disk morphologies found in NUGA galaxies (m=1, m=2 and stochastic instabilities) is a challenging result that …
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations of the SA(rs)bc Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3147, obtained with the IRAM interferometer at 1\farcs9 $\times$1\farcs6 and 1\farcs6 $\times$1\farcs4 resolutions, respectively. A central peak seen mainly in CO(2-1) and a ring-like structure at $r \simeq 10$\arcsec $\sim$2 kpc dominate the CO maps. In CO(1-0) an outer spiral at $r \simeq 20$\arcsec $\sim$4 kpc is also detected, not visible in CO(2-1) emission because it falls outside the field-of-view of the primary beam. The kinematics of the molecular structures are quite regular, although there is evidence f…
The NUGA project is the first high-resolution (0.5''-1'') CO survey of low luminosity AGN including the full sequence of activity types (Seyfert 1--2 and LINERs). NUGA aims to study systematically the different mechanisms for gas fueling of the AGN. In order to reach the critical spatial scales for AGN feeding (<100 pc), we are undertaking high-resolution observations, made at the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, to achieve a sharp view of the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas. In this talk we discuss the latest results of this survey which now includes newly acquired subarcsec resol…
The NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project is a combined effort to carry out a high-resolution (<1'') interferometer CO survey of a sample of 12 nearby AGN spiral hosts, using the IRAM array. We map the distribution and dynamics of molecular gas in the inner 1 kpc of the nuclei with resolutions of 10-50 pc, and study the mechanisms for gas fueling of the different low-luminosity AGN. First results show evidence for the occurrence of strong m=1 gas instabilities in Seyferts. NUGA maps allow us to address the origin/nature of m=1 modes and their link with m=2 modes and acoustic instabilities, present…
Several studies of nearby active galaxies indicate significantly higher HCN-to-CO intensity ratios in AGN than in starburst (SB) environments. HCN enhancement can be caused by many different effects, such as higher gas densities/temperatures, UV/X-ray radiation, and non-collisional excitation. As active galaxies often exhibit intense circumnuclear SB, high angular resolution/sensitivity observations are of paramount importance to disentangling the influence of SB from that of nuclear activity on the chemistry of the surrounding molecular gas. The tight relation of HCN enhancement and nuclear a…
The VLA has been used at 3.6 and 20 cm to image a sample of about 50 early-type Seyfert galaxies with recessional velocities less than 7,000 km/s and total visual magnitude less than 14.5. The nuclear radio structures of Seyfert 2.0's in the early-type sample tend to be aligned with the [OIII] and Halpha+[NII] structures even though the radio extents are smaller than the [OIII] and Halpha+[NII] extents by a factor of ~2->5. This alignment, previously known for individual Seyferts with `linear' radio sources, is here shown to be characteristic of early-type Seyfert galaxies as a class. Seyfert …
We create a complete gravity torque map of the disk of the LINER/Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC4579. We quantify the efficiency of angular momentum transport and search for signatures of secular evolution in the fueling process from r~15kpc down to the inner r~50pc around the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We use both the 1-0 and 2-1 line maps of CO obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) as part of the NUclei of Galaxies-(NUGA)-project. We derive the stellar potential from a NIR (K band) wide field image of the galaxy. The K-band image, which reveals a stellar bar, together with a hig…
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the starburst/Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 2782, obtained with the IRAM interferometer. The CO emission is aligned along the stellar nuclear bar of radius 1 kpc, configured in an elongated structure with two spiral arms at high pitch angle. At the extremity of the nuclear bar, the CO changes direction to trace two more extended spiral features at a lower pitch angle. These are the beginning of two straight dust lanes, which are aligned parallel to an oval distortion, reminiscent of a primary bar, almost perpendicular to the nuclear one. The two embedded bars appe…
We present simultaneous ASCA and RXTE observations of Ark 564, the brightest known ``narrow-line'' Seyfert 1 in the 2-10 keV band. The measured X-ray spectrum is dominated by a steep (Gamma~2.7) power-law continuum extending to at least 20 keV, with imprinted Fe K-line and -edge features and an additional ``soft excess'' below ~1.5 keV. The energy of the iron K-edge indicates the presence of highly ionised material, which we identify in terms of reflection from a strongly irradiated accretion disc. The high reflectivity of this putative disc, together with its strong intrinsic O VIII Ly-alpha …
There are several Seyfert galaxies for which there is a discrepancy between the small column of neutral hydrogen deduced from X-ray observations and the much greater column derived from the reddening of the optical/UV emission lines and continuum. The standard paradigm has the dust within the highly ionized gas which produces O~VII and O~VIII absorption edges (i.e., a ``dusty warm absorber''). We present an alternative model in which the dust exists in a component of gas in which hydrogen has been stripped, but which is at too low an ionization state to possess significant columns of O~VII and…
A 100ks XMM-Newton observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 offers a unique opportunity to explore the complexity of its X-ray spectrum. We find the \~3-8 keV continuum to be dominated by reflection from cold matter, with fluorescent K-shell lines detected from Ni, Fe, Ca, Ar, S, Si and Mg. At higher energies an intrinsic power law continuum, with canonical Seyfert 1 photon index, is seen through a near-Compton-thick cold absorber. A soft excess below \~3 keV is found to be dominated by line emission from an outflow of `warm' gas, photo-ionised and photo-excited by the intrinsically st…
We present results of the photoionization code IRIS, which calculates the spectrum emitted by the Warm Absorber (WA) in Seyfert 1 galaxies for a large grid of parameters (density, column density, ionization parameter...). We show that in Seyfert 1s, coronal lines Fe X, Fe XI, Fe XIV...), whose emission region shares common characteristics with the WA, could be formed in the WA. Unlike the absorption edges, such as those of O VII and O VIII observed in soft X-rays which are produced by the WA, these lines strongly constrain the physical parameters of the WA, especially the hydrogen density. Ind…
We present for the first time a high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert galaxy. The Chandra-LETGS spectrum of NGC 5548 shows strong, narrow absorption lines from highly ionised species (the H-like and He-like ions of C, N, O, Ne, Na, Mg, Si, as well as Fe XIV--XXI). The lines are blueshifted by a few hundred km/s. The corresponding continuum absorption edges are weak or absent. The absorbing medium can be modelled by an outflowing, thin and warm shell in photoionization equilibrium. The absorption lines are similar to lower ionization absorption lines observed in the UV, although these UV …
We observed the Seyfert I active galaxy/broad line radio galaxy 3C120 with the Chandra high energy transmission gratings and present an analysis of the soft X-ray spectrum. We identify the strongest absorption feature (detected at >99.9% confidence) with O VIII Lya (FWHM=1010^{+295}_{-265} km/s), blueshifted by -5500 +/- 140 km/s from systemic velocity. The absorption may be due to missing baryons in warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIGM) along the line-of-sight to 3C 120 at z=0.0147 +/- 0.0005, or it could be intrinsic to the jet of 3C 120. Assuming metallicities of 0.1 solar, we estimate an i…
We present results from a 50 ks observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 with the Chandra HETGS. The spectra above 2 keV are modeled by a power-law with a photon-index of 2.56+/-0.06. We confirm the presence of the soft excess below about 1.5 keV. If we fit the excess with blackbody model, the best-fit temperature is 0.124 keV. Ark 564 has been reported to show a peculiar emission line-like feature at 1 keV in various observations using lower resolution detectors, and the Chandra grating spectroscopy rules out an origin of blends of several narrow emission lines. We detect an ed…
We present the results from an XMM-Newton observation (January 24, 2001) of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy ESO 198-G24 (z=0.045). We found that this Seyfert has an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of about 10^44 erg s-1. This source shows no intrinsic absorption in addition to the Galactic absorption (N_{H}~3 x 10^20 cm-2). We found both with EPIC and RGS that this source possesses significantly steeper spectra below ~ 1.5-2 keV than observed at higher X-ray energies, the so-called soft X-ray excess. The RGS spectra reveal no significant narrow absorption lines suggesting that if there is a warm abs…
The ISO coronal line spectrum of the brightest Seyfert galaxies from the CfA sample is presented and modeled. ISO observations of [O IV] 25.9 $μ$, [Ne V] 14.3 $μ$, [Mg VIII] 3.02 $μ$ and [Si IX] 2.58 $μ$ lines are presented; their relationship with the soft part of the ionizing spectrum from 50 to 300 eV is investigated. Pure photoionization models reproduce the line ratios, setting ranges for the ionization parameter and the optical depth of the emitting clouds. On the basis of the available data alone it is not possible to distinguish between a power-law or a blackbody distribution as the in…
We have obtained low-dispersion spectra of NGC 3227 with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) to study the intrinsic UV absorption and the reddening of the nucleus in this Seyfert 1 galaxy. The UV spectra show a wealth of absorption lines at the systemic redshift that span a wide range in ionization state (Mg I to N V). The equivalent widths of the lines are consistent with our earlier prediction that a ``lukewarm absorber'' (T= 18,000 K at the ionized face) with a substantial column of gas [N(H) = 2 x 10^21 cm^-2] is present and likely responsible for the reddening of the nucleus. …
This paper presents a timing study and broadband spectral analysis of the broad-line radio galaxy 4C+74.26 based on a 35 ks XMM-Newton observation. As found in previous datasets, the source exhibits no evidence for rapid variability, and its 0.2-10 keV lightcurve is well fit by a constant. An excellent fit to the pn 0.3-12 keV spectrum was found using a continuum that combines an ionized and a neutral reflector, augmented by both cold and warm absorption. There is no evidence for a soft excess. The column of cold absorption was greater than the Galactic value with an intrinsic column of \~1.9\…
We detect seven distinct absorbing systems in the high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy IC 4329A, taken with XMM-Newton. Firstly we detect absorption due to cold gas in our own Galaxy and warm gas in the Galactic halo or the Local Group. This local warm gas is only detected through O VII absorption, from which we deduce a temperature between 0.03 and 0.2 keV. In IC 4329A we detect absorption from the host galaxy as well as from a warm absorber, close to the nucleus, which has 4 components. The absorption from the host galaxy is well modeled by neutral material. The warm absorb…
We present a detailed re-analysis of the two {\it ASCA} Performance Verification observations of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15. Confirming the results of Fabian et al. (1994), we find definite evidence for the {\sc O\,vii} and {\sc O\,viii} K-shell absorption edges of the warm absorber and a doubling of the warm absorber column density within the 3 weeks separating the two observations. No intra-day {\it flux-correlated} variability of the warm absorber is found. However, we report the discovery of an `event' in which the warm absorber parameters temporarily change for \sim10\,000\th…
We study the absorption and emission properties of the photoionised gas near one of the brightest and most variable AGN, the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051, in order to constrain the geometry, dynamics and ionisation structure of the outflow. We analyse two observations taken with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) of Chandra. We study the spectra of both observations and investigate the spectral response to a sudden, long-lasting flux decrease of a factor of 5 that occurred during the second observation. We confirm the preliminary detection of a highly ionised component with an…
We present the first observations of a Seyfert galaxy with the echelle gratings on the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), which provide high-resolution (R = 40,000) coverage of the intrinsic UV absorption lines in NGC 5548. We confirm the presence of five kinematic components of absorption in Lyman-alpha, C IV, and N V at radial velocities of -160 to -1060 km/s with respect to the emission lines, and find an additional Lyman-alpha$ component near the systemic velocity, which probably arises in the interstellar medium of the host galaxy. Compared to GHRS spectra of the N V and C IV ab…
We present observations of the UV absorption lines in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783, obtained with the medium resolution echelle gratings of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph(STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectra reveal the presence of three kinematic components of absorption in Ly-alpha, C IV, and N V, at radial velocities of -1365, -548, and -724 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the host galaxy (Components 1, 2 and 3, respectively); Component 1 also shows absorption by Si IV. Component 3 was not detected in any of the earlier Goddard High Resolution Spect…
(Abridged) The two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of the molecular, ionized, and highly ionized gas in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 1 galaxies have been measured using high spatial resolution (~0''.09) near-infrared spectroscopy from NIRSPEC with adaptive optics on the Keck telescope. Molecular hydrogen, H2, is detected in all nine Seyfert 1 galaxies and, in the majority of galaxies, has a spatially resolved flux distribution. In contrast, the narrow component of the BrG emission has a distribution consistent with that of the K-band continuum. In general, the kinematics of H2 are co…
We present new UV spectra of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, which we obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at high spectral resolution, in conjunction with simultaneous Chandra X-ray Observatory spectra. Taking advantage of the low UV continuum and broad emission-line fluxes, we have determined that the deepest UV absorption component covers at least a portion of the inner, high-ionization narrow-line region (NLR). We find nonunity covering factors in the cores of several kinematic components, which increase the column density measurements of N V and C IV by fac…
We present results from fitting ionized accretion disc models to three long ASCA observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15. All three datasets can be fit by a model consisting of ionized reflection from the inner region of the accretion disc (with twice solar Fe abundance) and a separate diskline component from farther out on the the disc. The diskline is required to fit the height of the observed Fe K line profile. However, we show that a much simpler model of reflection from a very weakly ionized constant density disc also fits the data. In this case only a single cold Fe K line at 6…
We present detailed time-averaged X-ray spectroscopy in the 0.5--10 keV band of the Seyfert~1.9 galaxy NGC 2992 with the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS). We model the complex continuum in detail. There is an Fe K line emission complex that we model with broad and narrow lines and we show that the intensities of the two components are decoupled at a confidence level >3sigma. The broad Fe K line has an EW of 118 (+32,-61) eV and could originate in an accretion disk (with inclination angle greater than ~30 degrees). The narrow Fe Kalpha line has an EW of 163 (+47,-26) eV and is unresolve…
We present an accurate characterisation of the high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Arakelian 564 and put it in to context with other objects of its type by making a detailed comparison of their spectra. The best fit to the data identifies five significant emission lines at 18.9, 22.1, 24.7, 29.0 and 33.5A due O VIII Ly alpha, O VII(f), N VII Ly alpha, N VI(i) and C VI Ly alpha respectively. These have an RMS velocity of ~1100km/s and a flow velocity of ~-600km/s, except for the O VII(f) emission line, which has a flow velocity consistent with zero. Two separate e…
We present results from Chandra HETGS (250 ks over two epochs) and XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS (60 ks) observations of NGC 2110, which has been historically classified as a Narrow Emission Line Galaxy galaxy. Our results support the interpretation that the source is a Seyfert 2 viewed through a patchy absorber. The nuclear X-ray spectrum of the source is best described by a power law of photon index $Γ$ ~1.7, modified by absorption from multiple layers of neutral material at a large distance from the central supermassive black hole. We report the strong detections of Fe K$α$ and Si K$α$ lines, whi…
One of the principal scientific objectives of the upcoming Constellation-X mission is to attempt to map the inner regions of accretion disks around black holes in Seyfert galaxies by reverberation mapping of the Fe K fluorescence line. This area of the disk is likely radiation pressure dominated and subject to various dynamical instabilities. Here, we show that density inhomogeneities in the disk atmosphere resulting from the photon bubble instability (PBI) can cause rapid changes in the X-ray reflection features, even when the illuminating flux is constant. Using a simulation of the developme…
Past X-ray observations by ASCA suggest that warm absorbers (O VII and O VIII edges) are apparently rare in high luminosity AGNs (quasars) while they are more common in low luminosity AGNs (Seyferts). However, this could be a selection effect if high luminosity AGNs have mostly narrow absorption lines (with no strong bound free edges), which escaped detection by the low resolution of ASCA. To check this hypothesis we are studying the high-resolution X-ray spectra of quasars from grating spectrometers on board Chandra and XMM-Newton in search for absorption lines. In this contribution we presen…
We present detailed evidence for a warm absorber in the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 and dispute earlier claims for relativistic O line emission. The HETG spectra show numerous narrow, unresolved (FWHM < 200 km/s) absorption lines from a wide range of ionization states of N, O, Mg, Ne, Si, S, Ar, and Fe. The O VII edge and 1s^2--1snp resonance line series to n=9 are clearly detected at rest in the AGN frame. We attribute previous reports of an apparently highly redshifted O VII edge to the 1s^2--1snp (n > 5) O VII resonance lines, and a neutral Fe L absorption complex. The shape of the Fe L f…
