We present a comprehensive spectroscopic imaging survey of the distribution and kinematics of atomic hydrogen (HI) in 16 nearby spiral galaxies hosting low luminosity AGN, observed with high spectral and spatial resolution (resolution: ~20 arcsec, 5 km/s) using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA). The sample contains a range of nuclear types, ranging from Seyfert to star-forming nuclei and was originally selected for the NUclei of GAlaxies project (NUGA) - a spectrally and spatially resolved interferometric survey of gas dynamics in nearby galaxies designed to identify the fueling mechanisms of AGN and the relation to host galaxy evolution. Here we investigate the relationship between the HI properties of these galaxies, their environment, their stellar distribution and their AGN type. The large-scale HI morphology of each galaxy is classified as ringed, spiral, or centrally concentrated; comparison of the resulting morphological classification with AGN type reveals that ring structures are significantly more common in LINER than in Seyfert host galaxies, suggesting a time evolution of the AGN activity together with the redistribution of the neutral gas. Dynamically disturbed HI disks are also more prevalent in LINER host galaxies than in Seyfert host galaxies. While several galaxies are surrounded by companions (some with associated HI emission), there is no correlation between the presence of companions and the AGN type (Seyfert/LINER).
The NUGA project is a high-resolution (0.5''-1'') CO survey of low luminosity AGN including the full sequence of activity types (Seyferts, LINERs and transition objects). NUGA aims to systematically study the different mechanisms for gas fueling of AGNs in the Local Universe. In this paper we discuss the latest results of this recently completed survey, which now includes newly acquired subarcsec resolution observations for all targets of the sample. The large variety of circumnuclear disk morphologies found in NUGA galaxies (m=1, m=2 and stochastic instabilities) is a challenging result that …
The NUGA project is the first high-resolution (0.5''-1'') CO survey of low luminosity AGN including the full sequence of activity types (Seyfert 1--2 and LINERs). NUGA aims to study systematically the different mechanisms for gas fueling of the AGN. In order to reach the critical spatial scales for AGN feeding (<100 pc), we are undertaking high-resolution observations, made at the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, to achieve a sharp view of the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas. In this talk we discuss the latest results of this survey which now includes newly acquired subarcsec resol…
The NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project is a combined effort to carry out a high-resolution (<1'') interferometer CO survey of a sample of 12 nearby AGN spiral hosts, using the IRAM array. We map the distribution and dynamics of molecular gas in the inner 1 kpc of the nuclei with resolutions of 10-50 pc, and study the mechanisms for gas fueling of the different low-luminosity AGN. First results show evidence for the occurrence of strong m=1 gas instabilities in Seyferts. NUGA maps allow us to address the origin/nature of m=1 modes and their link with m=2 modes and acoustic instabilities, present…
We discuss the efficiency of stellar gravity torques as a mechanism to account for the feeding of the central engines of four low luminosity AGN: NGC4321, NGC4826, NGC4579 and NGC6951. These galaxies have been observed as part of the NUGA CO project, aimed at the study of AGN fueling mechanisms. Our calculations allow us to derive the characteristic time-scales for gas flows and discuss whether torques from the stellar potentials are efficient enough to drain the gas angular momentum in the inner 1 kpc of these galaxies. Results indicate paradoxically that feeding should be thwarted close to t…
Within the frame of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project, we have determined the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas within the central kpc with high spatial resolution (100-150pc), for a sample of active galaxies. The goal is to study the gas-fueling mechanisms in AGN. We present interferometric observations of 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission from the Seyfert2 galaxy NGC6574, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). These data have been combined with 30m mapping data in these lines to correct for the flux resolved by the interferometer. At an angular r…
To examine the role of the host galaxy structure in fueling nuclear activity, we estimated gas flow rates from several kpc down to the inner few 10 pc for seven nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the NUGA sample (NUclei of GAlaxies). We calculated gravitational torques from near-IR images and determined gas in/out-flow rates as a function of radius and location within the galactic disks, based on high angular resolution interferometric observations of molecular (CO using PdBI) and atomic (HI using the VLA) gas. The results are compared with kinematic evidence for radial gas flows and the dy…
We present new high-resolution observations of the nucleus of the counter-rotating LINER NGC4826, made in the J=1-0 and J=2-1 lines of 12CO with the IRAM Plateau de Bure mm-interferometer(PdBI).The CO maps, which achieve 0.8''(16pc) resolution in the 2-1 line, fully resolve an inner molecular gas disk which is truncated at an outer radius of 700pc. The total molecular gas mass is distributed in a lopsided nuclear disk of 40pc radius and two one-arm spirals, which develop at different radii in the disk. The distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the inner 1kpc of NGC4826 show the preva…
We create a complete gravity torque map of the disk of the LINER/Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC4579. We quantify the efficiency of angular momentum transport and search for signatures of secular evolution in the fueling process from r~15kpc down to the inner r~50pc around the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We use both the 1-0 and 2-1 line maps of CO obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) as part of the NUclei of Galaxies-(NUGA)-project. We derive the stellar potential from a NIR (K band) wide field image of the galaxy. The K-band image, which reveals a stellar bar, together with a hig…
We present the first interferometric observations of CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) line emission from the warped LINER NGC3718, obtained with the IRAM PdBI. This L1.9 galaxy has a prominent dust lane and on kpc scales, a strongly warped atomic and molecular gas disk. The molecular gas is closely associated with the dust lane across the nucleus and its kinematic center is consistent with the mm continuum AGN. A comparison of our interferometric mosaic data, which fully cover the ~9kpc warped disk, with a previously obtained IRAM 30m single dish CO(1-0) map shows that the molecular gas distribution in the…
Several studies of nearby active galaxies indicate significantly higher HCN-to-CO intensity ratios in AGN than in starburst (SB) environments. HCN enhancement can be caused by many different effects, such as higher gas densities/temperatures, UV/X-ray radiation, and non-collisional excitation. As active galaxies often exhibit intense circumnuclear SB, high angular resolution/sensitivity observations are of paramount importance to disentangling the influence of SB from that of nuclear activity on the chemistry of the surrounding molecular gas. The tight relation of HCN enhancement and nuclear a…
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the starburst/Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 2782, obtained with the IRAM interferometer. The CO emission is aligned along the stellar nuclear bar of radius 1 kpc, configured in an elongated structure with two spiral arms at high pitch angle. At the extremity of the nuclear bar, the CO changes direction to trace two more extended spiral features at a lower pitch angle. These are the beginning of two straight dust lanes, which are aligned parallel to an oval distortion, reminiscent of a primary bar, almost perpendicular to the nuclear one. The two embedded bars appe…
Current mm-interferometers can provide a complete view of the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the circumnuclear disks of nearby galaxies. High-resolution CO maps are paramount in order to track down the feeding of active nuclei and quantitatively address the issue of how and for how long nuclear activity can be sustained in galaxies. Going beyond CO mapping, the use of more specific molecular tracers of dense gas can probe the feedback influence of activity on the chemistry and energy balance/redistribution in the interstellar medium of nearby galaxies, a prerequisite to interp…
The study of the content, distribution and kinematics of interstellar gas is a key to understand the origin and maintenance of both starburst and nuclear (AGN) activity in galaxies. The processes involved in AGN fueling encompass a wide range of scales, both spatial and temporal, which have to be studied. Probing the gas flow from the outer disk down to the central engine of an AGN host, requires the use of specific tracers of the interstellar medium adapted to follow the change of phase of the gas as a function of radius. Current mm-interferometers can provide a sharp view of the distribution…
Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen converts the UV continuum around Ly$β$ into optical continuum around H$α$, and the basic atomic physics has been discussed in several works on symbiotic stars. We propose that the same process may operate in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and calculate the linear polarization of the broad emission lines Raman-scattered by a high column neutral hydrogen compnent. The conversion efficiency of the Raman scattering process is discussed and the expected scattered flux is computed using the spectral energy distribution of an AGN given by a typical power law. The hig…
We report results from a FUSE survey of interstellar molecular hydrogen (H2) along 45 sight lines to AGN at high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 20 degrees). Most (39 of 45) of the sight lines show detectable Galactic H2 absorption from Lyman and Werner bands between 1000 and 1126 A, with column densities ranging from N(H2) = 10^(14.17-19.82) cm^-2. In the northern Galactic hemisphere, we identify many regions of low column, N(H2) < 10^15 cm^-2, between longitude l = 60-180 degrees and at b > 54 degrees. These `"H2 holes" provide valuable, uncontaminated sight lines for extragalactic UV spectroscopy…
We created a sample of nearby QSOs selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey and the Veron-Cetty & Veron catalog, with a limiting redshift of z<0.06, which consists of 63 objects. In this contribution, we present the results of our ISAAC Ks-band spectroscopic and H and Ks-band photometric observations of 9 sources of this sample. In seven sources we find hydrogen recombination lines Paalpha and Brgamma of which five galaxies show a broad component. In three sources, extended molecular hydrogen emission is detected in the 1-0S(1) line. The stellar CO-absorption feature is only detectable in 5 object…
We detect the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen in absorption at a redshift of 0.673 towards the 1 Jy radio source 1504+377. The 1504+377 radio source is located toward the center of what appears to be an inclined disk galaxy at z = 0.674. The 21 cm absorption line shows multiple velocity components over a velocity range of about 100 km sec$^{-1}$, with a total HI column density: N(HI) = $3.8\times10^{19}\times({{T_s}\over{f}})$ cm$^{-2}$. The velocity-integrated optical depth of this system is the largest yet seen for redshifted HI 21 cm absorption line systems (Carilli 1995). The 21 cm absorpti…
We present near infrared ISAAC VLT observations of nine (0.01<z<0.06) Active Galactic Nuclei selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey and the Veron-Cetty & Veron catalog. Hydrogen recombination lines Pa$α$ and Br$γ$ are observed in seven of the nine sources of which five show a broad component. In three sources, extended 1-0S(1) rotational-vibrational molecular hydrogen emission is detected. Stellar CO absorption is seen in four sources. In one of these objects, an upper limit of the central mass can be determined from the stellar velocity field. H- and Ks-band imaging allow us to determine the mo…
We examine all possible stationary, optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disc models relevant for active galactic nuclei (AGN) and identify the physical regimes in which they are stable against the thermal-viscous hydrogen ionization instability. Self-gravity and irradiation effects are included. We find that most if not all AGN discs are unstable. Observed AGN therefore represent the outburst state, although some or all quasars could constitute a steady population having markedly higher fuelling rates than other AGN. It has important implications for the AGN mass supply and for the p…
We present results from a survey of molecular hydrogen emission from a sample of Starburst and Seyfert galaxies carried out with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Pure rotational H_2 emission has been detected in a number of extragalactic objects and a variety of environments. A number of transitions from S(7) to S(0) are detected in both Starbursts and Seyferts. Using excitation diagrams we derive temperatures and masses of the ``warm'' molecular hydrogen. We find that the temperature of the ``warm'' gas is similar in Starbursts and Seyferts (those Seyferts for which we have firm detectio…
In many astrophysical objects an account for scattering of the X-ray fluorescent and resonance lines of iron ions by the electrons, bound in atomic and molecular hydrogen is important. Specific distortions of the scattered line profile spectrum appear in comparison with scattering by free electrons. Analysis of scattered line spectra may provide information on the ionization state, helium abundance and geometry of scattering media in the vicinity of AGNs, compact X-ray sources and on the surface of X-ray flaring stars and the Sun.
AGN activity is known to drive fast outflows of gas. We report the discovery of fast outflows of neutral gas with velocities over 1000 km/s in a number of radio galaxies. In the best studied object, 3C~293, the kinematical properties of the neutral and ionised outflows are similar, indicating a common origin. Moreover, the outflow appears to be located near the radio lobes and not near the nucleus. This suggests that the interaction between the radio jet and the ISM is driving the outflow.
We present new observations, performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, of the HI absorption in the central regions of Centaurus A. For the first time, absorption is detected against the radio core at velocities blueshifted with respect to the systemic velocity. Moreover, the data show that the nuclear redshifted absorption component is broader than reported before. With these new results, the kinematics of the HI in the inner regions of Cen A appears very similar to that observed in emission for the molecular circumnuclear disk. This suggests that the central HI absorption is not, …
We analyzed a sample of 26 background X-ray sources in a ~60 square degree field of the Large Magellanic Cloud observed with the ROSAT PSPC. The sample has been selected from previously classified and optically identified X-ray sources. In addition pointlike and spectrally hard sources with at least 100 to 200 observed counts have been used for the analysis. We performed X-ray spectral fitting and derived total hydrogen absorbing column densities due to LMC gas in the range 10^20 - 2. 10^21 cm^-2. We compared these columns with the HI columns derived from a 21-cm Parkes survey of the LMC. For …
We present preliminary results from high resolution (~ 0.05") adaptive optics observations of Cygnus A. The images show a bi-conic structure strongly suggestive of an obscuring torus around a quasar nucleus. A bright (K'=18.5) point source is found near the expected position of the nucleus. We interpret this source as the hot inner rim of the torus seen through the opening of the torus. Using high angular resolution K-band spectroscopy, we measure the ratio of molecular to recombination hydrogen lines as a function of distance to the center of the putative torus. These measurements place const…
We report R~3000 VLT ISAAC K-band spectroscopy of the nuclei (i.e. central 100-300pc) of 9 galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus. For 5 of these we also present spectra of the circumnuclear region out to 1kpc. We have measured a number of H_2 lines in the v=1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 vibrational transitions, as well as the Br_gamma and HeI recombination lines, and the NaI stellar absorption. Although only 3 of the galaxies are classified as Seyfert 1s in the literature, broad Br_gamma (FWHM 1000kms) is seen in 7 of the objects. The v=1-0 emission appears thermalised at T~1000K. However, the v=2-1…
The physical and kinematical conditions of the gas surrounding an active galactic nucleus (AGN) offer key diagnostics for understanding the processes occurring in the inner few kpc around the nucleus. Neutral hydrogen can give important insights on these regions. Apart from probing the presence of gas in relatively settled conditions (i.e. circumnuclear disks/tori) it can also trace the presence of extreme outflows. Some examples of these phenomena are briefly presented. For the study of the neutral hydrogen around AGN the high resolution offered by the VLBI is crucial in order to locate the r…
We present results of an infrared-to-X-ray study of 76 bright soft X-ray selected Seyfert galaxies discovered in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. These objects are characterized by steep X-ray spectra in the 0.2-2.0 keV bandpass with power law energy spectral indices in the range of 1.3 to 8 and a lack of internal absorption by neutral hydrogen. Our sample selection based on hardness ratio yields a mean X-ray slope of alpha-X = 2.1, steeper than in any other known AGN population. At optical wavelengths, the soft AGN have significantly bluer spectra than a comparison sample of AGN with a canonical, ha…
We present a method that allows us to estimate the distance from the continuum source located in the center of AGN to the highly ionized gas called warm absorber. We compute a set of constant total pressure photoionization models compatible with the warm absorber conditions, where a metal-rich gas is irradiated by a continuum in the form of a double power-law. The first power-law is hard up to 100 keV and represents a radiation from an X-ray source, while the second power-law extends downwards from several eVs and illustrates a radiation from an accretion disk. When the ionized continuum is do…
This work focuses on the properties of dusty tori in active galactic nuclei (AGN) derived from the comparison of SDSS type 1 quasars with mid-Infrared (MIR) counterparts and a new, detailed torus model. The infrared data were taken by the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) Survey. Basic model parameters are constraint, such as the density law of the graphite and silicate grains, the torus size and its opening angle. A whole variety of optical depths is supported. The favoured models are those with decreasing density with distance from the centre, while there is no clear tendency …
We established the catalog of X-ray point sources in the field of the Magellanic-type spiral galaxy NGC 3109 (DDO 236) from two ROSAT PSPC observations. Of the 91 X-ray sources 26 are contained within the HI extent of NGC 3109 as derived by Jobin & Carignan (1990) with the VLA. For 10 of these we can determine accurate hardness ratios delta HR2<=0.2. We find 3 candidate AGN, 2 candidate X-ray binaries and one source which may belong to either class. We also find 2 candidate foreground stars. In a field of 8'x8' observed with the NTT in the I-band and centered on the nucleus of NGC 3109 we dete…
Morphological disturbances and gas kinematics of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7679=Arp 216 are investigated to get clues to the history of this highly composite object, where AGN and starburst signatures dominate each other in the X-ray and optical/IR regime, respectively. Perturbations of the ionized gas velocity field appear quite mild within 15'' (~5 kpc) from the center, so as it can be straightforwardly modeled as a circularly rotating disk. On the contrary, outside that radius, significant disturbances show up. In particular, the eastern distorted arm as well as the huge neutral hydrogen bridge co…
We report the detection of OH satellite line masers at 1720 MHz and 1612 MHz from the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy M82. The observations were aimed at detecting 1720 MHz maser emission from the known radio emitting SNR in the nuclear region. At 1720 MHz we detect six features above the 5-sigma limit set by noise, four in emission and two in absorption. Three of the emission features appear closely associated with known discrete continuum radio sources, and one of the absorption features is precisely coincident with the discrete continuum source 44.01+59.6. The latter source also exhi…

We report on near-infrared medium-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of luminous and ultra luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs-ULIRGs), carried out with SOFI at the ESO 3.5m New Technology Telescope. Because of wavelength dependence of the attenuation, the detection of the Pa_alfa or Br_gamma line in the Ks band should provide relevant constraints on SFR and the contribution of an AGN. We find, however, that the intensities of the Pa_alfa and Br_gamma lines, even corrected for slit losses, are on average only 10% and 40%, respectively, of that expected from a normal starburst of similar bolomet…
We present high quality (high signal-to-noise ratio and moderate spectral resolution) near-infrared (near-IR) spectroscopic observations of 23 well-known broad-emission line active galactic nuclei (AGN). Additionally, we obtained simultaneous (within two months) optical spectroscopy of similar quality. The near-IR broad emission line spectrum of AGN is dominated by permitted transitions of hydrogen, helium, oxygen, and calcium, and by the rich spectrum of singly-ionized iron. In this paper we present the spectra, line identifications and measurements, and address briefly some of the important …
Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are young radio galaxies whose jet axes lie close to the plane of the sky, and whose appearance is therefore not dominated by relativistic beaming effects. The small linear sizes of CSOs make them valuable for studies of both the evolution of radio galaxies and testing unified schemes for active galactic nuclei (AGN). A parsec-scale region of gas surrounding the central engine is predicted by both accretion and obscuration scenarios. Working surfaces, or ``hot spots,'' and the radio jets of CSOs are close enough to the central engines that this circumnuclear ga…
In this paper we investigate how the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) can aid in determining the evolutionary history of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from redshifts z= 0 ->6. Given the vast collecting area of the SKA, it will be sensitive to both `radio-loud' AGN and the much more abundant `radio-quiet' AGN, namely the radio-quiet quasars and their `Type-II' counterparts, out to the highest redshifts. Not only will the SKA detect these sources but it will also often be able to measure their redshifts via the Hydrogen 21 cm line in emission and/or absorption. We construct a complete radio luminosit…
Near infrared spectra with resolution R ~ 1100 in the rest wavelength range 1.8-2.2 microns have been obtained for a complete sample of 33 ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Of the 33 objects observed, 2 show evidence of a central AGN through either a broad Paschen-alpha line or emission in the 1.963 micron fine structure of [Si VI]. In the median spectrum of the remaining 31 objects, the lines present are recombination lines of Hydrogen, neutral Helium, vibration-rotation lines of H_2, and [Fe II]. There is no indication of AGN activity in the median spectrum, either through broad atomic recomb…
We present the results of optical spectroscopic identifications of a bright subsample of 2-10keV hard X-ray selected sources from the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey in the northern sky. The flux limit of the subsample is 3*10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 in the 2-10keV band. All but one of the 87 hard X-ray selected sources are optically identified, with AGNs, 7 clusters of galaxies, and 1 galactic star. It is the largest complete sample of hard X-ray selected AGNs at the bright flux limit. Amounts of absorption to their nuclei are estimated to be hydrogen column densities (N_H) of up to ~3*10^23 cm^-2 …
(Abridge) Near-infrared spectroscopy is used to study the kinematics and excitation mechanisms of the H2 and [FeII] gas in a sample of AGN. The H2 lines are unresolved in all objects in which they were detected while the [FeII] lines have widths implying gas velocities of up to 650 km/s. This suggests that, very likely, the H2 and [FeII] emission does not originate from the same parcel of gas. Molecular H2 were detected in 90% of the sample, including PG objects, indicating detectavel amounts of molecular material even in objects with low levels of circumnuclear starburst activity. The data fa…
We present the results of the analysis of the AGN population in the deepest extragalactic hard X-ray survey. The survey is based on INTEGRAL observation of the 3C 273/Coma cluster region, and covers 2500 deg2 with a 20-60 keV flux limit 1.5 times lower than other surveys at similar energies, resolving about 2.5% of the cosmic hard X-ray background. Using this survey, we can constrain in an unbiased way the distribution of hydrogen column absorption up to Nh=10^25 cm-2. We put an upper limit of 24% to the fraction of Compton-thick objects. Compared to models of the AGN population selected in th…
The ISO-SWS 2.5-45 um infrared spectroscopic observations of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 (see companion paper) are combined with a compilation of UV to IR narrow emission line data to determine the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the obscured extreme-UV continuum that photoionizes the narrow line emitting gas in the active galactic nucleus. We search a large grid of gas cloud models and SEDs for the combination that best reproduces the observed line fluxes and NLR geometry. Our best fit model reproduces the observed line fluxes to better than a factor of 2 on average and…
Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of 3C radio galaxies and quasars shed new light on the nature of the central engines of AGN. Emission from silicate dust obscuring the central engine can be used to estimate the bolometric luminosity of an AGN. Emission lines from ions such as O IV and Ne V give another indication of the presence or lack of a hidden source of far-UV photons in the nucleus. Radio-loud AGN with relative-to-Eddington luminosity ratios of L/L_Edd < 3E-3 do not appear to have broad optical emission lines, though some do have strong silicate emission. Aromatic emissio…
