In the supermarket model there are n queues, each with a unit rate server. Customers arrive in a Poisson process at rate λn, where 0<λ<1. Each customer chooses d > 2 queues uniformly at random, and joins a shortest one. It is known that the equilibrium distribution of a typical queue length converges to a certain explicit limiting distribution as n -> oo. We quantify the rate of convergence by showing that the total variation distance between the equilibrium distribution and the limiting distribution is essentially of order n^{-1}; and we give a corresponding result for systems starting from quite general initial conditions (not in equilibrium). Further, we quantify the result that the systems exhibit chaotic behaviour: we show that the total variation distance between the joint law of a fixed set of queue lengths and the corresponding product law is essentially of order at most n^{-1}.
When decomposing the total orbit into $N$ sub-orbits (or simply orbits) related to each of $N$ servers and through comparing the numbers of customers in these orbits, we introduce a retrial supermarket model of $N$ identical servers, where two probing-server choice numbers are respectively designed for dynamically allocating each primary arrival and each retrial arrival into these orbits when the chosen servers are all busy. Note that the designed purpose of the two choice numbers can effectively improve performance measures of this retrial supermarket model. This paper analyzes a simple and b…
We consider the supermarket model in the usual Markovian setting where jobs arrive at rate $n λ_n$ for some $λ_n > 0$, with $n$ parallel servers each processing jobs in its queue at rate 1. An arriving job joins the shortest among $d_n \le n$ randomly selected service queues. We show that when $d_n \to \infty$ and $λ_n \to λ\in (0, \infty)$, under natural conditions on the initial queues, the state occupancy process converges in probability, in a suitable path space, to the unique solution of an infinite system of constrained ordinary differential equations parametrized by $λ$. Our main intere…
Stochastic service systems describe situations in which customers compete for service from scarce resources. Think of check-in lines at airports, waiting rooms in hospitals or queues in supermarkets, where the scarce resource is human manpower. Next to these traditional settings, resource sharing is also important in large-scale service systems such as the internet, wireless networks and cloud computing facilities. In these virtual environments, geographical conditions do not restrict the system size, paving the way for the emergence of large-scale resource sharing networks. This thesis invest…
For a centered $d$-dimensional Gaussian random vector $ξ=(ξ_1,\ldots,ξ_d)$ and a homogeneous function $h:R^d\to R$ we derive asymptotic expansions for the tail of the Gaussian chaos $h(ξ)$ given the function $h$ is sufficiently smooth. Three challenging instances of the Gaussian chaos are the determinant of a Gaussian matrix, the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble and the diameter of random Gaussian clouds. Using a direct probabilistic asymptotic method, we investigate both the asymptotic behaviour of the tail distribution of $h(ξ)$ and its density at infinity and then discuss possible extensions fo…
In this paper we present a numerical scheme for stochastic differential equations based upon the Wiener chaos expansion. The approximation of a square integrable stochastic differential equation is obtained by cutting off the infinite chaos expansion in chaos order and in number of basis elements. We derive an explicit upper bound for the $L^2$ approximation error associated with our method. The proofs are based upon an application of Malliavin calculus.
We develop the asymptotic expansion theory for vector-valued sequences (F N) N $\ge$1 of random variables in terms of the convergence of the Stein-Malliavin matrix associated to the sequence F N. Our approach combines the classical Fourier approach and the recent theory on Stein method and Malliavin calculus. We find the second order term of the asymptotic expansion of the density of F N and we illustrate our results by several examples. 2010 AMS Classification Numbers: 62M09, 60F05, 62H12
Let $F_n = (F_{1,n}, ....,F_{d,n})$, $n\geq 1$, be a sequence of random vectors such that, for every $j=1,...,d$, the random variable $F_{j,n}$ belongs to a fixed Wiener chaos of a Gaussian field. We show that, as $n\to\infty$, the components of $F_n$ are asymptotically independent if and only if ${\rm Cov}(F_{i,n}^2,F_{j,n}^2)\to 0$ for every $i\neq j$. Our findings are based on a novel inequality for vectors of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals, and represent a substantial refining of criteria for asymptotic independence in the sense of moments recently established by Nourdin and Rosinski.
In this paper, we study the distribution of the so-called "Yule's nonsense correlation statistic" on a time interval $[0,T]$ for a time horizon $T>0$ , when $T$ is large, for a pair $(X_{1},X_{2})$ of independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. This statistic is by definition equal to : \begin{equation*} ρ(T):=\frac{Y_{12}(T)}{\sqrt{Y_{11}(T)}\sqrt{Y_{22}(T)}}, \end{equation*} where the random variables $Y_{ij}(T)$, $i,j=1,2$ are defined as \begin{equation*} Y_{ij}(T):=\int_{0}^{T}X_{i}(u)X_{j}(u)du-T\bar{X}_{i}\bar{X_{j}}, \bar{X}_{i}:=\frac{1}{T}\int_{0}^{T}X_{i}(u)du. \end{equation*} We assum…
We consider sequences of needlet random fields defined as weighted averaged forms of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions. Our main result is a Central Limit Theorem in the high energy setting, for the boundary lengths of their excursion sets. This result is based on Stein-Malliavin techniques and Wiener chaos expansion for nonlinear functionals of random fields. To this end, a careful analysis of the variances of each chaotic component of the boundary length is carried out, showing that they are asymptotically constant, after normalisation, for all terms of the expansion and no leading component…
We investigate a special sequence of random variables $A(N)$ defined by an exponential power series with independent standard complex Gaussians $(X(k))_{k \geq 1}$. Introduced by Hughes, Keating, and O'Connell in the study of random matrix theory, this sequence relates to Gaussian multiplicative chaos (in particular "holomorphic multiplicative chaos'' per Najnudel, Paquette, and Simm) and random multiplicative functions. Soundararajan and Zaman recently determined the order of $\mathbb{E}[|A(N)|]$. By constructing an algorithm to calculate $A(N)$ in $O(N^2 \log N)$ steps, we produce computatio…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the quadratic variation for the class of AR(1) processes driven by white noise in the second Wiener chaos. Using tools from the analysis on Wiener space, we give an upper bound for the total-variation speed of convergence to the normal law, which we apply to study the estimation of the model's mean-reversion. Simulations are performed to illustrate the theoretical results.

This paper deals with characterizing the freeness and asymptotic freeness of free multiple integrals with respect to a free Brownian motion or a free Poisson process. We obtain three characterizations of freeness, in terms of contraction operators, covariance conditions, and free Malliavin gradients. We show how these characterizations can be used in order to obtain limit theorems, transfer principles, and asymptotic properties of converging sequences.
Consider the problem of matching two independent i.i.d. samples of size $N$ from two distributions $P$ and $Q$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. For an arbitrary continuous cost function, the optimal assignment problem looks for the matching that minimizes the total cost. We consider instead in this paper the problem where each matching is endowed with a Gibbs probability weight proportional to the exponential of the negative total cost of that matching. Viewing each matching as a joint distribution with $N$ atoms, we then take a convex combination with respect to the above Gibbs probability measure. We show…
We prove that multiplicative chaos measures can be constructed from extreme level sets or thick points of the underlying logarithmically correlated field. We develop a method which covers the whole subcritical phase and only requires asymptotics of suitable exponential moments for the field. As an application, we establish these estimates hold for the logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a Haar distributed random unitary matrix (CUE), using known asymptotics for Toeplitz determinant with (merging) Fisher-Hartwig singularities. Hence, this proves a conjecture of F…
This paper develops a theory of propagation of chaos for a system of weakly interacting particles whose terminal configuration is fixed as opposed to the initial configuration as customary. Such systems are modeled by backward stochastic differential equations. Under standard assumptions on the coefficients of the equations, we prove propagation of chaos results and quantitative estimates on the rate of convergence in Wasserstein distance of the empirical measure of the interacting system to the law of a McKean-Vlasov type equation. These results are accompanied by non-asymptotic concentration…
In this survey we collect some of the recent results on the "nodal geometry" of random eigenfunctions on Riemannian surfaces. We focus on the asymptotic behavior, for high energy levels, of the nodal length of Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus (arithmetic random waves) and on the sphere (random spherical harmonics). We give some insight on both Berry's cancellation phenomenon and the nature of nodal length second order fluctuations (non-Gaussian on the torus and Gaussian on the sphere) in terms of chaotic components. Finally we consider the general case of monochromatic random waves…
Rescaled Mellin-type transforms of the exponential functional of the Bourgade-Kuan-Rodgers statistic of Riemann zeroes are conjecturally related to the distribution of the total mass of the limit lognormal stochastic measure of Mandelbrot-Bacry-Muzy. The conjecture implies that a non-trivial, log-infinitely divisible probability distribution is associated with Riemann zeroes. For application, integral moments, covariance structure, multiscaling spectrum, and asymptotics associated with the exponential functional are computed in closed form using the known meromorphic extension of the Selberg i…
