A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the multi-anode photomultipliers. The data are digitized on the frontend boards and transferred via optical links to the readout system. The read-out electronics system is described in detail together with its measured performances.
The solenoidal large intensity device (SoLID) at Jefferson Lab will push the boundaries of luminosity for a large-acceptance detector, which necessitates the use of a light-gas threshold Cherenkov counter for online event selection. Due to the high luminosity, the single-photon background rate in this counter can exceed 160 kHz/cm$^2$ at the photosensors. Therefore, it is essential to validate the high-rate limits of the planned photosensors and readout electronics in order to mitigate the risk of failure. We report on the design and an early set of studies carried out using a small telescopic…
The photon detection system for the LHCb RICH Upgrade consists of an array of multianode photomultiplier tubes (MaPMTs) read out by custom-built modular electronics. The behaviour of the whole chain was studied at CERN using a pulsed laser. Threshold scans were performed in order to study the MaPMT pulse-height spectra at high event rates and different photon intensities. The results show a reduction in photon detection efficiency at 900 V bias voltage, marked by a 20 % decrease in the single-photon peak height, when increasing the event rate from 100 kHz to 20 MHz. This reduction was not obse…
COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study hadron structure and spectroscopy. Hadron identification in the momentum range between $3$ and $55 GeV/c$ is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter, RICH-1. To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 has been upgraded by replacing four MWPC-based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD-based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a Micromegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a…
LHCb RICH Upgrade: an overview of the photon detector and electronics system
The RICH-1 Detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS has undergone an important upgrade in 2016. Four new photon detectors, based on MPGD technology and covering a total active area larger than 1.2~$m^2$ have replaced the previously used MWPC-based photon detectors. The new detector architecture, resulting from a dedicated, eight years long, R\&D program, consists in a hybrid MPGD combination of two THGEMs and a Micromegas stage; the first THGEM, coated with a CsI layer, acts as a reflective photocathode. The signals are extracted from the anode pads by capacitive coupling and read-out by…
Particle IDentification (PID) is a central requirement of the experiments at the future EIC. Hadron PID at high momenta by RICH techniques requires the use of low density gaseous radiators, where the challenge is the limited length of the radiator region available at a collider experiment. By selecting a photon wavelength range in the far UV domain, around 120 nm, the number of detectable photons can be increased. Ideal sensors are gaseous Photon Detectors (PD) with CsI photocathode, where the status of the art is represented by the MPGD-based PDs at COMPASS RICH. Detector optimization is requ…
Experiments at the future Electron Ion Collider require excellent hadron identification in a broad momentum range, in harsh conditions. A RICH capable to fulfill the PID requirements of the EIC could use MPGD-based photon detectors with solid photocathodes for covering large surfaces at affordable cost, providing good efficiency, high resolution and compatibility with magnetic field. Photon detectors realized by coupling THGEMs and Micromegas have been successfully operated at the RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN since 2016. A similar technology could be envisaged for an EIC R…
