Induced thermal scattering power thresholds have been calculated as a function of size and laser pump frequency. The thermal coupling coefficients of morphology dependent resonances were estimated by asymptotic methods. The resulting power threshold is comparable with experimental observations of thresholds of Raman lasing and thermal instability in spherical silica resonators. Applications may include the remote measurement of the temperature of aerosol droplets and the stabilization of microcavity lasers against thermal oscillations and temperature deviations on microcavity. A silica resonator can be used as an IR sensor, as well as an additional tool for precisely measuring the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of a target in a microsphere by calculating of the thermal shifts of eigenfrequencies in spectra of nonlinear scattering.
A high-Q silica whispering-gallery mode microresonator is an attractive platform on which to demonstrate a broad and phase-locked Raman comb in various wavelength regimes. Raman combs can be used for applications such as compact pulse laser sources, sensors, optical clocks, and coherence tomography. However, the formation dynamics of a Raman comb has not been well exploited. Here we study the dynamics of the Raman comb formation in silica rod microresonators, which have cavity free spectral ranges in microwave rates. We generated a Raman comb with a smooth spectral envelope and also observed t…
To date there are extensive studies of optical nonlinearities in whispering gallery resonators (WGRs) in the near and mid-infrared wavelengths. Pushing this research into the visible region is equally valuable. Here, we demonstrate a Kerr frequency comb and Raman lasing at 462 nm in an SiO2 WGR. Notably, due to the high optical intensities achieved, photodarkening is unavoidable and can quickly degrade the optical quality of both the coupling optical nanofiber and the microcavity even at very low pump powers. Nonetheless, stable stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and hyper-parametric oscillatio…
Herein, we report sub-wavelength propagation and directional out-coupling of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of a fluorescent silica microsphere resonator mediated via plasmon polaritons in a single crystalline silver nanowire. Fluorescent spectral signatures of emission from the nanowire ends confirm efficient guiding of WGMs via nanowire plasmons. By employing Fourier plane optical microscopy, we reveal and quantify the directional fluorescence emission of WGMs from the ends of the nanowire. Given that the discussed geometry is self-assembled from a solution-phase, our results will find rele…
The implementation of optomechanical devices in silicon-on-insulator (SOI), the canonical silicon photonics technology is seriously hampered by the strong phonon leakage into the silica under-cladding. This limitation has been partially circumvented by total or partial removal of the silica under-cladding to form Si membranes or pedestal waveguides. However, this approach complicates integration with standard silicon optoelectronics circuitry, limiting the versatility and application of the strategy. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new strategy to confine photons and phonons in SOI without …
Frequency comb generation in microresonators at visible wavelengths has found applications in a variety of areas such as metrology, sensing, and imaging. To achieve Kerr combs based on four-wave mixing in a microresonator, dispersion must be in the anomalous regime. In this work, we demonstrate dispersion engineering in a microbubble resonator (MBR) fabricated by a two-CO$_2$ laser beam technique. By decreasing the wall thickness of the MBR down to 1.4 $μ$m, the zero dispersion wavelength shifts to values shorter than 764 nm, making phase matching possible around 765 nm. With the optical \text…
The recent demonstration of dissipative Kerr solitons in microresonators has opened a new pathway for the generation of ultrashort pulses and low-noise frequency combs with gigahertz to terahertz repetition rates, enabling applications in frequency metrology, astronomy, optical coherent communications, and laser-based ranging. A main challenge for soliton generation, in particular in ultra-high-Q resonators, is the sudden change of circulating intracavity power during the onset of soliton generation. This sudden power change requires precise control of the seed laser frequency and power or fas…
Silica and water are known as exceptionally inert chemical materials whose interaction is not completely understood. Here we show that the effect of this interaction can be significantly enhanced by optical whispering gallery modes (WGMs) propagating in a silica microcapillary filled with water. Our experiments demonstrate that WGMs, which evanescently heat liquid water over several hours, induce permanent alterations in silica material characterized by the subnanometer variation of the WGM spectrum. We use the discovered effect to fabricate optical WGM microresonators having potential applica…
On-chip optical resonators have proven to be a promising platform for generating Kerr frequency combs. Whispering gallery mode resonators are particularly attractive because of their small footprint as well as low threshold and power consumption. This performance can be attributed to two characteristics: the cavity quality factor (Q) and the cavity dispersion. The input optical field into the cavity is amplified by the cavity Q, enabling nonlinear processes to occur with low input powers. In addition, the total span of the optical comb is governed by the dispersion. In an optical cavity-based …
We report on 'slow' pulsing dynamics in a silica resonator-based laser system: by nesting a high-Q rod-resonator inside an amplifying fiber cavity, we demonstrate that trains of microsecond pulses can be generated with repetition rates in the hundreds of kilohertz. We show that such pulses are produced with a period equivalent to several hundreds of laser cavity roundtrips via the interaction between the gain dynamics in the fiber cavity and the thermo-optical effects in the high-Q resonator. Experiments reveal that the pulsing properties can be controlled by adjusting the amplifying fiber cav…
Dissipative temporal Kerr solitons in optical microresonators enable to convert a continuous wave laser into a train of femtosecond pulses. Of particular interest are single soliton states, whose $\mathrm{sech}^{2}$ spectral envelope provides a spectrally smooth and low noise optical frequency comb, and that recently have been generated in crystalline, silica, and silicon-nitride resonators. Here, we study the dynamics of multiple soliton states containing ${N}$ solitons and report the discovery of a novel, yet simple mechanism which makes it possible to reduce deterministically the number of …
Optical logic has the potential to replace electronics with photonic circuits in applications for which optic-to-electronic conversion is impractical and for integrated all-optical circuits. Nonlinear optics in whispering gallery mode resonators provides low power, scalable methods to achieve optical logic. We demonstrate, for the first time, an all-optical, universal logic gate using counterpropagating light in which all signals have the same operating optical frequency. Such a device would make possible the routing of optical signals without the need for conversion into the electronic domain…
We report controllable manipulation of slow and fast light in a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator fabricated from Erbium (Er3+) doped silica. We observe continuous transition of the coupling between the fiber-taper waveguide and the microresonator from undercoupling to critical coupling and then to overcoupling regimes by increasing the pump power even though the spatial distance between the resonator and the waveguide was kept fixed. This, in turn, enables switching from fast to slow light and vice versa just by increasing the optical gain. An enhancement of delay of two-fol…
Optical microresonators are of paramount importance in photonic circuits requiring fine spectral filtering or resonant light recirculation. Key performance metrics improve with increasing resonance quality factor (Q) across all applications. The performance of silicon photonic circuits is often hampered by the low-quality factor of planar silicon microresonators, typically of Q~10^4-10^5. On the other hand, bulk whispering gallery mode resonators provide a wide range of materials with intriguing optical properties and exceptionally high resonant quality factors Q>10^7. However, the efficient c…
Microcombs -- optical frequency combs generated in coherently-driven nonlinear microresonators -- have attracted significant attention over the last decade. The ability to generate two such combs in a single resonator device has in particular enabled a host of applications from spectroscopy to imaging. Concurrently, novel comb generation techniques such as synchronous pulsed driving have been developed to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of microcomb generation. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of dual-microcomb generation via synchronous pulsed pumping of a single …
Temporal cavity solitons (CS) are optical pulses that can persist in passive resonators, and they play a key role in the generation of coherent microresonator frequency combs. In resonators made of amorphous materials, such as fused silica, they can exhibit a spectral red-shift due to stimulated Raman scattering. Here we show that this Raman-induced self-frequency-shift imposes a fundamental limit on the duration and bandwidth of temporal CSs. Specifically, we theoretically predict that stimulated Raman scattering introduces a previously unidentified Hopf bifurcation that leads to destabilizat…
Metal nanoparticles are the most frequently used nanostructures in plasmonics. However, besides nanoparticles, metal nanowires feature several advantages for applications. Their elongation offers a larger interaction volume, their resonances can reach higher quality factors, and their mode structure provides better coupling into integrated hybrid dielectric-plasmonic circuits. It is crucial though, to control the distance of the wire to a supporting substrate, to another metal layer or to active materials with sub-nanometer precision. A dielectric coating can be utilized for distance control, …
Soliton microcombs offer the prospect of advanced optical metrology and timing systems in compact form factors. In these applications, pumping of microcombs directly from a semiconductor laser without amplification or triggering components is desirable for reduced power operation and to simplify system design. At the same time, low repetition rate microcombs are required in many comb applications for interface to detectors and electronics, but their increased mode volume makes them challenging to pump at low power. Here, 10 GHz repetition rate soliton microcombs are directly pumped by low-powe…

Fibers lasers is a field which is typically dominated by rare earth ions as gain material in the core of a silica optical waveguide. Due to their specific emission wavelengths, rare-earth doped fiber lasers are available only at few pre-defined wavelengths. However, Quantum Dots (QDs) are materials, which shows tunable emission with change in size and composition. Due to such tunability, QDs seem to be promising candidates for obtaining fiber lasers at a spectrum of wavelengths which are not possible using rare earth ions. To replace rare earth ions with QDs, it is of paramount importance that…
Laser linewidth is of central importance in spectroscopy, frequency metrology and all applications of lasers requiring high coherence. It is also of fundamental importance, because the Schawlow-Townes laser linewidth limit is of quantum origin. Recently, a theory of stimulated Brillouin laser (SBL) linewidth has been reported. While the SBL linewidth formula exhibits power and optical Q factor dependences that are identical to the Schawlow-Townes formula, a source of noise not present in two-level lasers, phonon occupancy of the Brillouin mechanical mode, is predicted to be the dominant SBL li…
Raman-based technologies have enabled many ground-breaking scientific discoveries related to surface science, single molecule chemistry and biology. For example, researchers have identified surface bound molecules by their Raman vibrational modes and demonstrated polarization-dependent Raman gain. However, a surface constrained Raman laser has yet to be demonstrated because of the challenges associated with achieving a sufficiently high photon population located at a surface to transition from spontaneous to stimulated Raman scattering. Here, advances in surface chemistry and in integrated pho…
