Einstein-Maxwell theory implies the mixing of photons with gravitons in an external electromagnetic field. This process and its possible observable consequences have been studied at tree level for many years. We use the worldline formalism for obtaining an exact integral representation for the one-loop corrections to this amplitude due to scalars and fermions. We study the structure of this amplitude, and obtain exact expressions for various limiting cases.
Mechanism mixing graviton spin states is defined. The mixing appears naturally due to loop corrections. Its influence on amplitudes involving matter states is shown, implications for empirical data are discussed. It is argued that the mixing is one of the reasons behind an inability to defined the universal running of the Newton constant.
In this work I study the effect of graviton-photon mixing in a constant external magnetic field and find for the first time in the literature exact solution of the equations of motion. In particular, I apply the effect of graviton-photon mixing to the case of interaction of gravitational waves with an external magnetic field and calculate the intensity Stokes parameter of the produced electromagnetic radiation. The obtained results are new and extend previous results obtained by using approximation methods.
Classical soft photon and soft graviton theorems determine long wavelength electromagnetic and gravitational waveforms for a general classical scattering process in terms of the electric charges and asymptotic momenta of the ingoing and outgoing macroscopic objects. Performing Fourier transformation of the electromagnetic and gravitational waveforms in the frequency variable one finds electromagnetic and gravitational waveforms at late and early retarded time. Here extending the formalism developed in \cite{1912.06413}, we derive sub-subleading electromagnetic and gravitational waveforms which…

In this short note, we propose an algorithm based on the expansions of amplitudes, the dimensional reduction technic and the differential operators, to calculate the tree level scalar-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars, as well as the tree level scalar-photon-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars and one photon. While applying the unitarity method, these amplitudes are necessary inputs for the calculation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in general relativity for two massive charged objects interact with gravity and electromagnetic field.
In this work, we present the first experimental upper limits on the presence of stochastic ultra-high-frequency gravitational waves. We exclude gravitational waves in the frequency bands from $(2.7 - 14)\times10^{14}~$Hz and $(5 - 12)\times10^{18}~$Hz down to a characteristic amplitude of $h_c^{\rm min}\approx6\times 10^{-26}$ and $h_c^{\rm min}\approx 5\times 10^{-28}$ at $95~$% confidence level, respectively. To obtain these results, we used data from existing facilities that have been constructed and operated with the aim of detecting WISPs (Weakly Interacting Slim Particles), pointing out …
In this paper we investigate graviton-photon oscillation in the presence of an external magnetic field in alternative theories of gravity. Whereas the effect of an effective refractive index for the electromagnetic radiation was already considered in the literature, we develop the first approach to take into account the effect of the modification of the predictions for gravitational waves in alternative theories of gravity in the phenomenon of graviton-photon mixing.
The interactions of gravitons with spin-1 matter are calculated in parallel with the well known photon case. It is shown that graviton scattering amplitudes can be factorized into a product of familiar electromagnetic forms, and cross sections for various reactions are straightforwardly evaluated using helicity methods. Universality relations are identified. Extrapolation to zero mass yields scattering amplitudes for photon-graviton and graviton-graviton scattering. The phenomenon of light bending near a massive object, which is generally treated using classical general relativity, is discusse…
We show that gravitons with energy $E<Ω$, where $Ω$ is the energy gap a localized non-relativistic system, can be detected by finite-time interactions with a detector. Our detector is based on a quadrupole moment interaction between the hydrogen atom and the gravitational field in the linearized approximation. In this model, the external agent responsible for switching the interaction on an off inputs energy into the system, which creates a non-zero excitation probability even when the field is in the vacuum state. However, when the gravitational field is in a one-particle state with angular m…
Using on-shell amplitude methods, we explore 4-dimensional Electric-Magnetic duality and its double copy. We show explicitly that the on-shell scattering amplitudes know about `dual' photons (and dual gravitons), that the off-shell photon propagator double copies to the graviton propagator and that the magnetic part of the propagator is essential for the double copy to hold. We also show that there is an equivalent gravito-magnetic part of the graviton propagator which is essential in giving rise to solutions with either angular momentum or NUT charge. Furthermore, we comment on the so-called …
This thesis is dedicated to the study of theories of massive gravity. The formulation of higher spin gauge field theories, along with a Chern-Simons (CS) like term for fields of higher spins is presented. Through this setup, general features of theories describing massless/massive fields of higher spin in arbitrary dimensions is discussed. In 2+1 dimensions, the existence of multiple mass-generating mechanisms i.e. metric-based masses and topological masses, offers the possibility for gauge bosons to acquire mixed masses. This scenario is first introduced in a theory of photons where both Proc…
We extend the Non-Relativistic formulation of General Relativity (NRGR) given in Goldberger et al. (Phys Rev D 73:104029, 2006) to incorporate the effects of electromagnetic charge of the constituents of the binary. We incorporate the photon field in NRGR by giving the field decomposition and power counting rules. Using these, we develop the Feynman rules to describe photon and graviton interactions with point particle worldline. We then find the corrections to the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian (Einstein et al. in Ann Math 39:65-100, 1938) due to the presence of the photon field and elec…
We demonstrate that T invariance can be violated even when Pontecorvo--Maki--Nakagawa--Sakata lepton mixing matrix is real. We obtain a sufficient condition of T violation in neutrino oscillations in matter and electromagnetic field. In the two-flavor model we derive the T-violating spin-flavor transition probabilities. Then we prove that the transition probabilities for neutrino in moving medium in electromagnetic field differ from those for antineutrino in matter composed of antiparticles and electromagnetic field only in the sign of the T-violating term.
In this work, we compute some phenomenological bounds for the electromagnetic and massive gravitational high-derivative extensions supposing that it is possible to have an astrophysical process that generates simultaneously gravitational and electromagnetic waves. We present Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) higher-order derivative models, following the Myers-Pospelov approach, to electrodynamics and massive gravitational waves. We compute the corrected equation of motion of these models, their dispersion relations and the velocities. The LIV parameters for the gravitational and electromagnet…
It is known that the canonical quantization of general relativity leads to a non-renormalizable theory, which however with the modern tools of effective field theories it is possible to make well-defined at low energies. What is emerging nowadays is that recovering general relativity from the classical limit of scattering amplitudes seems more efficient than actually solve the Einstein equations. The thesis then aims to explore the state-of-the-art strategies to recover classical gravitational observables from quantum computations and apply them in order to reconstruct the Reissner-Nordström-T…
We consider the effect of including a non-minimal coupling between a $U(1)$ vector gauge field and the graviton Regge trajectory in holographic QCD models. This coupling describes the QCD interaction between the quark bilinear electromagnetic current and the Pomeron. We test this new coupling against DIS data at low Bjorken $x$ and obtain an excellent fit with a chi squared of 1.1 over a very large kinematical range in the photon virtuality $Q^2<400 \ {\rm GeV}^2$ and for $x<10^{-2}$. The scale of the new dimension full coupling, which arises from integrating higher spin fields, is of order $6…
A fundamental assumption in the theory of brane world is that all matter and radiation are confined on the four-dimensional brane and only gravitons can propagate in the five-dimensional bulk spacetime. The brane world theory did not provide an explanation for the existence of electromagnetic fields and the origin of the electromagnetic field equation. In this paper, we propose a model for explaining the existence of electromagnetic fields on a brane and deriving the electromagnetic field equation. Similar to the case in Kaluza-Klein theory, we find that electromagnetic fields and the electrom…
In the era of gravitational wave (GW) detection from astrophysical sources by LIGO/VIRGO, it is of great importance to take the quantum gravity effect of graviton-photon (GRAPH) mixing in the cosmic magnetic field to the next level. In this work, we study such an effect and derive for the first time perturbative solutions of the linearized equations of motions of the GRAPH mixing in an expanding universe. In our formalism we take into account all known standard dispersive and coherence breaking effects of photons such as the Faraday effect, the Cotton-Mouton (CM) effect, and the plasma effects…
We consider the theory of a symmetric tensor field in 4D, invariant under a subclass of infinitesimal diffeomorphism transformations, where the vector diff parameter is the 4-divergence of a scalar parameter. The resulting gauge symmetry characterizes the "fracton" quasiparticles and identifies a theory which depends on a dimensionless parameter, which cannot be reabsorbed by a redefinition of the tensor field, despite the fact that the theory is free of interactions. This kind of "electromagnetic gauge symmetry" is weaker that the original diffeomorphism invariance, in the sense that the most…
