We discuss the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms which is suddenly coupled to a condensate of molecules by an optical or magnetic Feshbach resonance. Three limiting regimes are found and can be understood from the transient dynamics occuring for each pair of atoms. This transient dynamics can be summarised into a time-dependent shift and broadening of the molecular state. A simple Gross-Pitaevskii picture including this shift and broadening is proposed to describe the system in the three regimes. Finally, we suggest how to explore these regimes experimentally.
We consider an atomic Fermi gas confined in a uniform optical lattice potential, where the atoms can pair into molecules via a magnetic field controlled narrow Feshbach resonance. Thus by adjusting the magnetic field the portion of fermionic and bosonic particles in the system can be continuously varied. We analyze the statistical mechanics of this system and consider the interplay of the lattice physics with the atom-molecule conversion. We study the entropic behavior of the system and characterize the temperature changes that occur during adiabatic ramps across the Feshbach resonance. We sho…
We consider an atomic Fermi gas confined in a uniform optical lattice potential, where the atoms can pair into molecules via a magnetic field controlled narrow Feshbach resonance. The phase diagram of the resulting atom-molecule mixture in chemical and thermal equilibrium is determined numerically in the absence of interactions under the constraint of particle conservation. In the limiting cases of vanishing or large lattice depth we derive simple analytical results for important thermodynamic quantities. One such quantity is the dissociation energy, defined as the detuning of the molecular en…
A complete adiabatic transport of Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap is investigated within the Landau-Zener (LZ) and Gaussian Landau-Zener (GLZ) schemes for the case of a small nonlinearity, when the atomic interaction is weaker than the coupling. The schemes use the constant (LZ) and time-dependent Gaussian (GLZ) couplings. The mean field calculations show that LZ and GLZ suggest essentially different transport dynamics. Significant deviations from the case of a strong coupling are discussed.
A complete irreversible adiabatic transport of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a double-well trap is investigated within the mean field approximation. The transfer is driven by time-dependent (Gaussian) coupling between the wells and their relative detuning. The protocol successfully works in a wide range of both repulsive and attractive BEC interaction. The nonlinear effects caused by the interaction can be turned from detrimental into favorable for the transport. The results are compared with familiar Landau-Zener scenarios using the constant coupling. It is shown that the pulsed Gaussian …
We theoretically analyze dissociation of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate of molecular dimers and examine how the spatial inhomogeneity of the molecular condensate affects the conversion dynamics and the atom-atom pair correlations in the short-time limit. Both fermionic and bosonic statistics of the constituent atoms are considered. Using the undepleted molecular-field approximation, we obtain explicit analytic results for the asymptotic behavior of the second-order correlation functions and for the relative number squeezing between the dissociated atoms in one, two and three s…
