We describe a pairing mean-field theory related to the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, and apply it to the dynamics of dissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) into correlated bosonic atom pairs. We also perform the same simulation using two stochastic phase-space techniques for quantum dynamics -- the positive P-representation method and the truncated Wigner method. By comparing the results of our calculations we are able to assess the relative strength of these theoretical techniques in describing molecular dissociation in one spatial dimension. An important aspect of our analysis is the inclusion of atom-atom interactions which can be problematic for the positive-P method. We find that the truncated Wigner method mostly agrees with the positive-P simulations, but can be simulated for significantly longer times. The pairing mean-field theory results diverge from the quantum dynamical methods after relatively short times.
We provide a framework to solve generic models describing the dissociation of multiple molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in a nonadiabatic regime. The competition between individual chemical reactions can lead to non-trivial dependence on critical components such as path interference and symmetries, thus, affecting the final distribution of atomic population. We find an analytical solution for an illustrative example model involving four atomic modes. When the system parameters satisfy $CPT$ symmetry, where $C$ is charge conjugation, $P$ is parity, and $T$ is time-reversal symmetry, our solu…
We study the effect of dephasing on the coherent dissociation dynamics of an atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that when phase-noise intensity is strong with respect to the inverse correlation time of the stimulated process, dissociation is suppressed via a Bose enhanced Quantum Zeno effect. This is complementary to the quantum zeno control of phase-diffusion in a bimodal condensate by symmetric noise (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 220403 (2008)) in that the controlled process here is phase-{\it formation} and the required decoherence mechanism for its suppression is purely phase n…
We consider a potential scattering of Bose-Hubbard dimer in 1D optical lattice. A numerical approach based on effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian has been developed for solving the scattering problem. It allows to compute the tunneling and dissociation probabilities for arbitrary shape of the potential barrier and arbitrary kinetic energy of the dimer. The developed approach has been used to address the problem of two-particle decay out of a trap. In particular, it is shown that the presence of dissociation channels significantly decreases non-escape probability due to single-particle escape t…
We study a fermionic atom optics counterpart of parametric down-conversion with photons. This can be realized through dissociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate of molecular dimers consisting of fermionic atoms. We present a theoretical model describing the quantum dynamics of dissociation and find analytic solutions for mode occupancies and atomic pair correlations, valid in the short time limit. The solutions are used to identify upper bounds for the correlation functions, which are applicable to any fermionic system and correspond to ideal particle number-difference squeezing
We study atom-atom correlations and relative number squeezing in the dissociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of molecular dimers made of either bosonic or fermionic atom pairs. Our treatment addresses the role of the spatial inhomogeneity of the molecular BEC on the strength of correlations in the short time limit. We obtain explicit analytic results for the density-density correlation functions in momentum space, and show that the correlation widths and the degree of relative number squeezing are determined merely by the shape of the molecular condensate.
We theoretically analyze dissociation of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate of molecular dimers and examine how the spatial inhomogeneity of the molecular condensate affects the conversion dynamics and the atom-atom pair correlations in the short-time limit. Both fermionic and bosonic statistics of the constituent atoms are considered. Using the undepleted molecular-field approximation, we obtain explicit analytic results for the asymptotic behavior of the second-order correlation functions and for the relative number squeezing between the dissociated atoms in one, two and three s…
We investigate the quantum many-body dynamics of dissociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate of molecular dimers into pairs of constituent bosonic atoms and analyze the resulting atom-atom correlations. The quantum fields of both the molecules and atoms are simulated from first principles in three dimensions using the positive-P representation method. This allows us to provide an exact treatment of the molecular field depletion and s-wave scattering interactions between the particles, as well as to extend the analysis to nonuniform systems. In the simplest uniform case, we find that the major s…
We study the dynamical properties of a few bosons confined in an one-dimensional split hard wall trap with the interaction strength varying from the weakly to strongly repulsive regime. The system is initially prepared in one side of the double well by setting the barrier strength of the split trap to be infinity and then the barrier strength is suddenly changed to a finite value. Both exact diagonalization method and Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) approximation are used to study the dynamical evolution of the initial system. The exact results based on exact diagonaliztion verify the enhancement of …
Recent Feshbach-resonance experiments with 85Rb Bose-Einstein condensates have led to a host of unexplained results: dramatic losses of condensate atoms for an across-resonance sweep of the magnetic field, a collapsing condensate with a burst of atoms emanating from the remnant condensate, increased losses for decreasing interaction times--until very short times are reached, and coherent oscillations between remnant and burst atoms. In particular, the amplitude of the remnant-burst oscillations, and the corresponding missing atoms, have prompted speculation as to the formation of a molecular c…
The concept of dissociation-time entanglement provides a means of manifesting non-classical correlations in the motional state of two counter-propagating atoms. In this article, we discuss in detail the requirements for a specific experimental implementation, which is based on the Feshbach dissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate of fermionic lithium. A sequence of two magnetic field pulses serves to delocalize both of the dissociation products into a superposition of consecutive wave packets, which are separated by a macroscopic distance. This allows to address them separately in …
Three-body collisions of ultracold identical Bose atoms under tight cylindrical confinement are analyzed. A Feshbach resonance in two-body collisions is described by a two-channel zero-range interaction. Elimination of the closed channel in the three-body problem reduces the interaction to a one-channel zero-range one with an energy dependent strength. The related problem with an energy independent strength (the Lieb-Liniger-McGuire model) has an exact solution and forbids all chemical processes, such as three-atom association and diatom dissociation, as well as reflection in atom-diatom colli…
We theoretically investigate the effect of anomalous quantum correlations on the light-induced frequency shift in the photoassociation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Anomalous quantum correlations arise because, although formed from a pair of zero-momentum condensate atoms, a condensate molecule need not dissociate back to the BEC, but may just as well form a noncondensate atom pair with equal and opposite momentum, i.e., due to rogue photodissociation. The uncorrelated frequency shift of the photoassociation spectrum is to the red and linearly dependent on the laser intensity. …
Recent Feshbach-resonance experiments with 85Rb Bose-Einstein condensates have led to a host of unexplained results: dramatic losses of condensate atoms for an across-resonance sweep of the magnetic field, a collapsing condensate with a burst of atoms emanating from the remnant condensate, increased losses for decreasing interaction times-- until short times are reached, and seemingly coherent oscillations between remnant and burst atoms. Using a simple yet realistic mean-field model, we find that rogue dissociation, molecular dissociation to noncondensate atom pairs, is strongly implicated as…
We analyse the atomic state obtained by photo-dissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein-condensate. This process is equivalent to down-conversion in quantum optics where it is responsible for squeezing of the field amplitudes. Monte Carlo simulations derived from the Positive P description of the system, and approximate equations for second moments of the atomic field operators are introduced to describe the early stages of the process -- not amenable to the usual mean-field description.
We study the effects of strong inter-particle interaction on diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^6Li_2$ molecules from a periodic potential created by pulses of a far detuned optical standing wave. For short pulses we observe the standard Kapitza-Dirac diffraction, with the contrast of the diffraction pattern strongly reduced for very large interactions due to interaction dependent loss processes. For longer pulses diffraction shows the characteristic for matter waves impinging on an array of tubes and coherent channeling transport. We observe a slowing down of the time evolution go…
The presence of strong interactions in a many-body quantum system can lead to a variety of exotic effects. Here we show that even in a comparatively simple setup consisting of a charged impurity in a weakly interacting bosonic medium the competition of length scales gives rise to a highly correlated mesoscopic state. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we unravel its vastly different polaronic properties compared to neutral quantum impurities. Moreover, we identify a transition between the regime amenable to conventional perturbative treatment in the limit of weak atom-ion interactions and …
Both classical and quantum dynamics of the synchronization between two nonlinear mechanical modes scattered from Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by the standing-wave laser beam are comparatively investigated. As the ultra-low dissipations of the momentum modes in the atomic BECs, the synchronized dynamics are studied in a framework of closed-system theory in order to track down both the classical and the quantum synchronizations from an angle of quantum control. The classical synchronization and the relevant dynamics of measure synchronization, the quantum synchronization and two different ty…
We examine collective magnetoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), focusing on rapid adiabatic passage from atoms to molecules induced by a sweep of the magnetic field across a wide (>~ 10 G) Feshbach resonance in 85Rb. This problem raises an interest because strong magnetoassociation is expected to favor the creation of molecular-dissociated atom pairs over the formation of molecular BEC [Javanainen and Mackie, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 090403 (2002)]. Nevertheless, the conversion to atom pairs is found to depend on the direction of the sweep, so that a system initially above threshold …
Thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional (1D) quantum well (QW) with miscellaneous permutations of the Dirichlet (D) and Neumann (N) boundary conditions (BCs) at its edges in the perpendicular to the surfaces electric field $\mathscr{E}$ are calculated. For the canonical ensemble, analytical expressions involving theta functions are found for the mean energy and heat capacity $c_V$ for the box with no applied voltage. Pronounced maximum accompanied by the adjacent minimum of the specific heat dependence on the temperature $T$ for the pure Neumann QW and their absence for other BCs are p…
We consider in detail the situation of applying a time dependent external magnetic field to a 87Rb atomic Bose-Einstein condensate held in a harmonic trap, in order to adiabatically sweep the interatomic interactions across a Feshbach resonance to produce diatomic molecules. To this end, we introduce a minimal two-body Hamiltonian depending on just five measurable parameters of a Feshbach resonance, which accurately determines all low energy binary scattering observables, in particular, the molecular conversion efficiency of just two atoms. Based on this description of the microscopic collisio…
