The energy spectrum of the electromagnetic normal modes plays a central role in the theory of the van der Waals and Casimir interaction. In dissipative media it appears as if there are distinct normal modes with complex valued energies. The summation of the zero-point energies of these modes render a complex valued result. Using the contour integration, resulting from the use of the generalized argument principle, gives a real valued and different result. We resolve this contradiction and show that the spectrum of true normal modes form a continuum with real frequencies. We illustrate the problem in connection with the van der Waals interaction between two metal half spaces.
We describe the optimal realization of entangling quantum gates for trapped ions mediated by a dissipative bus mode. With suitably shaped control pulses one can substantially decrease ion-phonon entanglement while maintaining the mediated interaction.
We develop a theoretical framework for the dissipative propagation of quantized light in interacting optical media under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The theory allows us to determine the peculiar spatiotemporal structure of the output of two complementary Rydberg-EIT-based light-processing modules: the recently demonstrated single-photon filter and the recently proposed single-photon subtractor, which, respectively, let through and absorb a single photon. In addition to being crucial for applications of these and other optical quantum devices, the theory opens…
Rydberg blockade physics in optically dense atomic media under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) leads to strong dissipative interactions between single photons. We introduce a new approach to analyzing this challenging many-body problem in the limit of large optical depth per blockade radius. In our approach, we separate the single-polariton EIT physics from Rydberg-Rydberg interactions in a serialized manner while using a hard-sphere model for the latter, thus capturing the dualistic particle-wave nature of light as it manifests itself in dissipative Rydberg-EI…
We describe a scheme with analytic result that allows to generate steady-state entanglement for two atoms over a dissipative bosonic medium. The resonant coupling between the mediating bosonic mode and cavity modes produces three collective atomic decay channels. This dissipative dynamics, together with the unitary process induced by classical microwave fields, drives the two atoms to the symmetric or asymmetric entangled steady state conditional upon the choice of the phases of the microwave fields. The effects on the steady-state entanglement of off-resonance mediating bosonic modes are anal…
We present a formalism for which a dissipative system is given by a variational principle. The formalism applies to dynamical systems where its trajectory is monotonic. Subsequently, we derive its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian. From the Hamiltonian, we quantize canonically the classical particle in a viscous media. We study the free quantum particle in a viscous media and the dissipative quantum tunnelling. It is found that the dissipation influences tunnelling probability by a factor that closely resembles the result of Caldeira and Leggett.
We develop a dual description of quantum optics adapted to dielectric systems without magnetic property. Our formalism, which is shown to be equivalent to the standard one within some dipolar approximations discussed in the article, is applied to the description of polaritons in dielectric media. We show that the dual formalism leads to the Huttner-Barnett equations [B. Huttner, S. M. Barnett, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{46}, 4306 (1992)] for QED in dielectric systems. More generally, we discuss the role of electromagnetic duality in the quantization procedure for optical systems and derive the struc…
We put forth a hitherto unexplored control strategy that enables finite-speed, high-fidelity transport of a quantum wavepacket through a low-temperature dissipative medium. The control consists in confining the wavepacket within a shallow anharmonic trap (tweezer), whose nonuniform velocity is steered so as to maximize the transfer fidelity between two locations. A relevant scenario is a quantum impurity moving through an ultracold gas. Unlike shortcuts to adiabaticity, our approach can simultaneously cope with wavepacket leakage via non-adiabatic and phonon-mediated processes, provided both a…
We study quantum dynamics of many-qubit systems strongly coupled to a quantized electromagnetic cavity mode, in the presence of decoherence and dissipation for both fermions and cavity photons. The analytic solutions are derived for a broad class of open quantum systems in Lindblad approximation. They include identical qubits, an ensemble of qubits with a broad distribution of transition frequencies, and multi-level electron systems. Compact analytic solutions for time-dependent quantum state amplitudes and observables become possible with the use of the stochastic equation of evolution for th…

In this article we provide a a general analysis of canonical quantization for polaritons in dispersive and dissipative electromagnetic media. We compare several approaches based either on the Huttner Barnett model [B. Huttner, S. M. Barnett, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{46}, 4306 (1992)] or the Green function, Langevin noise method [T. Gruner, D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{53}, 1818 (1996)] which includes only material oscillators as fundamental variables. We show in order to preserve unitarity, causality and time symmetry one must necessarily include with an equal footing both electromagnetic mo…
In this paper we have considered the interaction of a Jaynes and Cummings system with the electromagnetic field in its vacuum state and, solving the dynamical problem, we have analyzed the amount of entanglement induced in the bipartite system (atom + cavity mode) by the common electromagnetic reservoir. This has allowed us to quantitatively characterize the regime under which field-induced cooperative effects are not vanished by dissipation. Once the Decoherence Free Regime is reached, transient entanglement tends to become stationary and, therefore, usable for quantum gate implementation.
We derive a first--principles method of determining the van der Waals or Casimir pressure in a dissipative and dispersive planar multilayered system by calculating the Maxwell stress tensor in a fictitious layer of vacuum, that is eventually made to vanish, introduced in the structure. This is illustrated by calculating the van der Waals pressure in a thin film with dissipative properties embedded between two semi--infinite media.
Propagation of two dimensional pulses in electromagnetically induced tranparency media in the case of perpendicular storing and retrieving pulses has been analyzed. It has been shown that propagation control of the pulses in optically thick media can be used for producing interchange between pulse time-shape and intensity profile distribution. A simple obvious analytical solution for the retrieved new field has been obtained.
A simple approach is proposed for the quantization of the electromagnetic field in nonlinear and inhomogeneous media. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg's equations we derive Maxwell's equations for the field operators. When the nonlinearity goes to zero, this quantization method returns to the generalized canonical quantization procedure for linear inhomogeneous media [Phys. Rev. A, 43, 467, 1991]. The explicit Hamiltonians for the second-order and thir…
A new mathematical and computational technique for calculating quantum vacuum expectation values of energy and momentum densities associated with electromagnetic fields in bounded domains containing inhomogeneous media is discussed. This technique is illustrated by calculating the mode contributions to the difference in the vacuum force expectation between opposite ends of an inhomogeneous dielectric non-dispersive medium confined to a perfectly conducting rigid box.
We present a Gupta-Bleuler quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in time-dependent dielectric media. Starting from the Maxwell equations, a generalization of the Lorentz gauge condition adapted to time varying dielectrics is derived. Using this gauge, a Gupta-Bleuler approach to quantize all polarizations of the radiation field and the corresponding constraint condition are introduced. This new approach is different from the quantized electromagnetic field in vacuum in the sense that here the contributions of unphysical photons cannot be thoroughly eliminated, which further lead to…
The mechanism for entanglement of two flux qubits each interacting with a single mode electromagnetic field is discussed. By performing a Bell state measurements (BSM) on photons we find the two qubits in an entangled state depending on the system parameters. We discuss the results for two initial states and take into consideration the influence of decoherence.
Pseudo-Hermitian operators appear in the solution of Maxwell's equations for stationary non-dispersive media with arbitrary (space-dependent) permittivity and permeability tensors. We offer an extension of the results in this direction to certain stationary dispersive media. In particular, we use the WKB approximation to derive an explicit expression for the planar time-harmonic solutions of Maxwell's equations in an inhomogeneous dispersive medium and study the combined affect of inhomogeneity and dispersion.
A bi-anisotropic magnetodielectric medium is modeled by two independent set of three dimensional harmonic oscillators .A fully canonical quantization of electromagnetic field is demonstrated in the presence of a bi-anisotropic magnetodielectric medium. The electric and magnetic polarization fields of the medium are obtained in terms of the dynamical variable modeling the medium. The Heisenberg equations of the system are solved for a multilayer bi-anisotropic magnetodielectric medium.
We investigate the role of the cross decay rates in a system composed by two electromagnetic modes interacting with the same reservoir. Two feasible experiments sensitive to the magnitudes and phases of these rates are described. We show that if the cross decay rates are appreciable there are states less exposed to decoherence and dissipation, and in limit situations a decoherence free subspace appears.
We investigate the Casimir-Polder interaction between two atoms one of which is excited. We show that the perturbation theory results in divergence of integrals for the interaction between an excited atom and a media of dilute gas. We considered the interaction between two atoms embedded in a dielectric medium. The non-perturbative method used in this paper shows that the interaction between the atoms is suppressed due to absorption of photons by the medium. Now the integrals are divergent no more. Interaction between two media of dilute gases is considered for the case of high temperatures.
We present a quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field interacting with atomic systems in the presence of dispersing and absorbing magnetodielectric media, including left-handed material having negative real part of the refractive index. The theory is applied to the spontaneous decay of a two-level atom at the center of a spherical free-space cavity surrounded by magnetodielectric matter of overlapping band-gap zones. Results for both big and small cavities are presented, and the problem of local-field corrections within the real-cavity model is addressed.
Numerical Framework for Multimode Jaynes- and Tavis-Cummings Models Incorporating the Modified Langevin Noise Formalism: Non-Markovian Analysis of Atom-Field Interactions in Dissipative Electromagnetic Environments
We address the long-standing controversy regarding the correct description of the electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor in media and its consequences for the Casimir force. The latter being due to the zero-point momentum of the electromagnetic field, competing approaches based on the Abraham or Maxwell stress tensor lead to different predictions. We consider the test scenario of two colloidal spherical particles submerged in a dielectric medium and use three criteria to distinguish the two approaches: we show that the Abraham stress tensor, and not the Maxwell stress tensor, leads to a Casimi…
By introducing a suitable Lagrangian, a canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field in the presence of a non-dispersive bi-anisotropic inhomogeneous magnetodielectric medium is investigated. A tensor projection operator is defined and the commutation relation between the vector potential and its canonically conjugate variable is written in terms of the projection operator. The quantization method is generalized in the presence of the atomic systems. The spontaneous emission of a two-level atom located in a non-dispersive anisotropic megnetodielectric medium is studied.
We study the consequences of dissipation in homogeneous media when the system is subject to a sudden change, thereby producing pairs of correlated quasi-particles with opposite momenta. We compute both the modifications of the spectrum, and those of the correlations. In particular, we compute the final coherence level, and identify the regimes where the state is non-separable. To isolate the role of dissipation, we first consider dispersive media and study the competition between the intensity of the jump which induces some coherence, and the temperature which reduces it. The contributions of …
We theoretically investigate two quantum modes interacting via local couplings to a dissipative field. Our model considers two mechanical modes with distinct frequencies coupled optomechanically to the same cavity mode. The dissipative cavity field mediates the interaction between the mechanical modes but also leads to decoherence of the mechanical oscillators. Depending on the ratio between effective interaction strength and dissipation rate, which can be chosen via the pump detuning, the interaction assumes a quantum mechanical or classical character. For any cavity decay, there is a regime …
We study the dissipative propagation of quantized light in interacting Rydberg media under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Rydberg blockade physics in optically dense atomic media leads to strong dissipative interactions between single photons. The regime of high incoming photon flux constitutes a challenging many-body dissipative problem. We experimentally study in detail for the first time the pulse shapes and the second-order correlation function of the outgoing field and compare our data with simulations based on two novel theoretical approaches well-suite…
The dissipative quantum electromagnetics is introduced in a comprehensive manner as a field-matter-bath coupling problem. First, the matter is described by a cluster of Lorentz oscillators. Then the Maxwellian free field is coupled to the Lorentz oscillators to describe a frequency dispersive medium. The classical Hamiltonian is derived for such a coupled system, using Lorenz gauge and decoupled scalar and vector potential formulations. The classical equations of motion are derivable from the Hamiltonian using Hamilton equations. Then the Hamiltonian is quantized with all the pertinent variabl…
A Quantum Walk Inspired Qubit Lattice Algorithm for Simulating Electromagnetic Wave Propagation and Scattering in Conservative and Dissipative Magnetized Plasmas
A strong electromagnetic field interacting with an electron system generates both the Rabi oscillations and the Stark splitting of the electron density. Changing of the electron density gives rise to nonadiabatic effects due to existence of the electron-vibrational interaction in a dissipative system. In this Letter, the mechanism of energy transfer between the electron system and the phonon reservoir is presented. This mechanism is based on establishment of the coupling between the electron states dressed by the electromagnetic field and the forced vibrations of reservoir oscillators under th…
We defend a natural division of the energy density, energy flux and momentum density of electromagnetic waves in linear media in electromagnetic and material parts. In this division, the electromagnetic part of these quantities have the same form as in vacuum when written in terms of the macroscopic electric and magnetic fields, the material momentum is calculated directly from the Lorentz force that acts on the charges of the medium, the material energy is the sum of the kinetic and potential energies of the charges of the medium and the material energy flux results from the interaction of th…
Classical viscid media are quite common in our everyday life. However, we are not used to find such media in quantum mechanics, and much less to analyze their effects on the dynamics of quantum systems. In this regard, the Caldirola-Kanai time-dependent Hamiltonian constitutes an appealing model, accounting for friction without including environmental fluctuations (as it happens, for example, with quantum Brownian motion). Here, a Bohmian analysis of the associated friction dynamics is provided in order to understand how a hypothetical, purely quantum viscid medium would act on a wave packet f…
The standard derivations of electromagnetic energy and momentum in media take Maxwell's equations as the starting point. It is well known that for dispersive media this approach does not directly yield exact expressions for the energy and momentum densities. Although Maxwell's equations fully describe electromagnetic fields, the general approach to conserved quantities in field theory is not based on the field equations, but rather on the action. Here an action principle for macroscopic electromagnetism in dispersive, lossless media is used to derive the exact conserved energy-momentum tensor.…
Pseudo-Hermitian operators can be used in modeling electromagnetic wave propagation in stationary lossless media. We extend this method to a class of non-dispersive anisotropic media that may display loss or gain. We explore three concrete models to demonstrate the utility of our general results and reveal the physical meaning of pseudo-Hermiticity and quasi-Hermiticity of the relevant wave operator. In particular, we consider a uniaxial model where this operator is not diagonalizable. This implies left-handedness of the medium in the sense that only clockwise circularly polarized plane-wave s…
We investigate the near-critical dynamics of atomic density fluctuations in the non-equilibrium self-organization transition of an optically driven quantum gas coupled to a single mode of a cavity. In this system cavity-mediated long-range interactions between atoms, tunable by the drive strength, lead to softening of an excitation mode recently observed in experiments. This phenomenon has previously been studied within a two-mode approximation for the collective motional degrees of freedom of the atomic condensate which results in an effective open-system Dicke model. Here, including the full…
Electromagnetic Casimir stresses are of relevance to many technologies based on mesoscopic devices such as MEMS embedded in dielectric media, Casimir induced friction in nano-machinery, micro-fluidics and molecular electronics. Computation of such stresses based on cavity QED generally require numerical analysis based on a regularization process. A new scheme is described that has the potential for wide applicability to systems involving realistic inhomogeneous media. From a knowledge of the spectrum of the stationary modes of the electromagnetic field the scheme is illustrated by estimating n…
We express the electromagnetic field propagating in an arbitrary time-independent non-dispersive medium in terms of an operator that turns out to be pseudo-Hermitian for Hermitian dielectric and magnetic permeability tensors Epsilon and Mu. We exploit this property to determine the propagating field. In particular, we obtain an explicit expression for a planar field in an isotropic medium with Epsilon and Mu varying along the direction of the propagation. We also study the scattering of plane waves due to a localized inhomogeneity.
