The act of measuring optical emissions from two remote qubits can entangle them. By demanding that a photon from each qubit reaches the detectors, one can ensure than no photon was lost. But the failure rate then rises quadratically with loss probability. In [1] this resulted in 30 successes per billion attempts. We describe a means to exploit the low grade entanglement heralded by the detection of a lone photon: A subsequent perfect operation is quickly achieved by consuming this noisy resource. We require only two qubits per node, and can tolerate both path length variation and loss asymmetry. The impact of photon loss upon the failure rate is then linear; realistic high-loss devices can gain orders of magnitude in performance and thus support QIP.
For any mean value of a cartesian component of a spin vector we identify the smallest possible uncertainty in any of the orthogonal components. The corresponding states are optimal for spectroscopy and atomic clocks. We show that the results for different spin J can be used to identify entanglement and to quantity the depth of entanglement in systems with many particles. With the procedure developed in this letter, collective spin measurements on an ensemble of particles can be used as an experimental proof of multi-particle entanglement
We introduce an entanglement-depth criterion optimized for planar quantum squeezed (PQS) states. It is connected with the sensitivity of such states for estimating an arbitrary, not necessarily small phase. We compare numerically our criterion with the well-known extreme spin squeezing condition of Sørensen and Mølmer [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4431 (2001)] and show that our condition detects a higher depth of entanglement when both planar spin variances are squeezed below the standard quantum limit. We employ our theory to monitor the entanglement dynamics in a PQS state produced via quantum non-d…
High-dimensional entanglement promises to increase the information capacity of photons and is now routinely generated exploiting spatio-temporal degrees of freedom of single photons. A curious feature of these systems is the possibility to certify entanglement despite strong noise in the data. We show that it is also possible to exploit this noisy high-dimensional entanglement for quantum key distribution by introducing a protocol that uses mutliple subspaces of the high-dimensional system simultaneously. Our protocol can be used to establish a secret key even in extremely noisy experimental c…
We analyze the resilience under photon loss of the bi-partite entanglement present in multi-photon states produced by parametric down-conversion. The quantification of the entanglement is made possible by a symmetry of the states that persists even under polarization-independent losses. We examine the approach of the states to the set of states with a positive partial transpose as losses increase, and calculate the relative entropy of entanglement. We find that some bi-partite distillable entanglement persists for arbitrarily high losses.
The effects of photon bunching and antibunching correspond to the classical and quantum features of the electromagnetic field, respectively. No direct evidence suggests whether these effects can be potentially related to quantum entanglement. Here we design a cavity quantum electrodynamics model with two atoms trapped in to demonstrate the connections between the steady-state photon statistics and the two-atom entanglement . It is found that within the weak dissipations and to some good approximation, the local maximal two-atom entanglements perfectly correspond to not only the quantum feature…
We propose a scheme of loss-resilient entanglement swapping between two distant parties via an imperfect optical channel. In this scheme, two copies of hybrid entangled states are prepared and the continuous-variable parts propagate through lossy media. In order to perform successful entanglement swapping, several different measurement schemes are considered for the continuousvariable parts such as single-photon detection for ideal cases and a homodyne detection for practical cases. We find that the entanglement swapping using hybrid states with small amplitudes offers larger entanglement than…
We propose a method to witness entanglement between two continuous-variable systems in a Gaussian state. Its key ingredient is a local lossy state transfer from the original spatially separated systems onto two spatially separated qubits. The qubits are initially in a pure product state, therefore by detecting entanglement between the qubits we witness entanglement between the two original systems. This method greatly simplifies entanglement witnessing in complex systems.
We study the effects of losses on the entanglement created between two separate atomic gases by optical probing and homodyne detection of the transmitted light. The system is well-described in the Gaussian state formulation. Analytical results quantifying the degree of entanglement between the two gases are derived and compared with the entanglement in a pair of light pulses generated by an EPR source. For low (high) transmission losses the highest degree of entanglement is obtained by probing with squeezed (antisqueezed) light. In an asymmetric setup where light is only sent one way through t…
The disentangling effect of repeated applications of the bit flip channel (I\otimesσ_x) on bipartite qubit systems is analyzed. It is found that the rate of loss of entanglement is not uniform over all states. The distillable entanglement of maximally entangled states decreases faster than that of less entangled states. The analysis is also generalized to noise channels of the form n.sigma.
Entangled coherent states, which can in principle be created using strong Kerr non-linearities, allow the violation of Bell inequalities for very coarse-grained measurements. This seems to contradict a recent conjecture that observing quantum effects in macroscopic systems generally requires very precise measurements. However, here we show that both the creation of the required states and the required measurements rely on being able to control the phase of the necessary Kerr-nonlinearity based unitary operations with extreme precision. This lends support to the idea that there is a general pri…
We apply spin-squeezing techniques to identify and quantify highly multi-partite photonic entanglement in polarization-squeezed light. We consider a practical single-mode scenario, and find that Wineland-criterion polarization squeezing implies entanglement of a macroscopic fraction of the total photons. A Glauber-theory computation of the observable N-photon density matrix, with N up to 100, finds that N-partite entanglement is observable despite losses and without post-selection. We estimate that existing detectors could observe $\sim1000$-partite entanglement from a few dB of polarization s…
Single-photon entanglement may be the simplest type of entanglement but it is of vice importance in quantum communication. Here we present a practical protocol for distilling the single-photon entanglement from both photon loss and decoherence. With the help of some local single photons, the probability of single photon loss can be decreased and the less-entangled state can also be recovered to maximally entangled state simultaneously. It only requires some linear optical elements which makes it feasible in current experiment condition. This protocol might find applications in current quantum …
Entanglement distillation is a process via which the strength and purity of quantum entanglement can be increased probabilistically. It is a key step in many quantum communication and computation protocols. In particular, entanglement distillation is a necessary component of the quantum repeater, a device which counters the degradation of entanglement that inevitably occurs due to losses in a communication line. Here we report an experiment on distilling the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state of light, the workhorse of continuous-variable entanglement, using the technique of noiseless amplifi…
Single-photon entanglement is one of the primary resources for quantum networks, including quantum repeater architectures. Such entanglement can be revealed with only local homodyne measurements through the entanglement witness presented in [Morin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 130401 (2013)]. Here, we provide an extended analysis of this witness by introducing analytical bounds and by reporting measurements confirming its great robustness with regard to losses. This study highlights the potential of optical hybrid methods, where discrete entanglement is characterized through continuous-variable…
We calculate the entanglement assisted capacity of a multimode bosonic channel with loss. As long as the efficiency of the channel is above 50%, the superdense coding effect can be used to transmit more bits than those that can be stored in the message sent down the channel. Bounds for the other capacities of the multimode channel are also provided.
We provide an exact and complete characterization of the entanglement dynamics of two qubits coupled to a common structured reservoir at zero temperature. We derive the conditions to maximize reservoir-induced entanglement for an initially factorized state of the two-qubit system. In particular, when the two qubits are placed inside a lossy cavity, we show that high values of entanglement can be obtained, even in the bad cavity limit, in the dispersive regime. Finally we show that, under certain conditions, the entanglement dynamics exhibits quantum beats and we explain their physical origin i…
The dynamics of a cascaded system that consists of two atom-cavity subsystems is studied by using the quantum trajectory method. Unwanted losses are included, such as photon absorption and scattering by the cavity mirrors and spontaneous emission of the atoms. Considering an initially excited two-level atom in the source subsystem, analytical solutions are obtained. The entanglement evolution is studied for the two atoms and for the two intracavity fields.
The action of a channel on a quantum system, when non trivial, always causes deterioration of initial quantum resources, understood as the entanglement initially shared by the input system with some reference purifying it. One effective way to measure such a deterioration is by measuring the loss of coherent information, namely the difference between the initial coherent information and the final one: such a difference is ``small'', if and only if the action of the channel can be ``almost perfectly'' corrected with probability one. In this work, we generalise this result to different entanglem…

We study the diffraction of two maximally entangled qubits encoded into spatial modes of light with orbital angular momenta $\pm \hbar l_0$, on angular apertures. Exploiting the uncertainty relation between angular position and momentum, we quantify the diffraction-induced entanglement loss, for different $l_0$, as a function of the angular uncertainty $Δϕ$ induced by the apertures. We demonstrate that the degradation of entanglement follows a universal law parametrised by the product $l_0Δϕ$ alone.} {We study the diffraction of two photonic qubits, which are initially maximally entangled in t…
We present analytical compact solution for the density matrix and correlation functions of two collective-macroscopic spins evolving via Ising-like Hamiltonian in the presence of particle losses. The losses introduce non-local phase noise which destroys highly entangled states arising in the evolution. On the other hand, the states appearing at relatively short timescales, possessing EPR-like entanglement will survive. Applying our solutions to the recently proposed scheme to entangle two Bose-Einstein condensates, we estimate the optimal number of atoms for EPR correlations.
We provide an analytical expression for the entanglement decay of initially maximally entangled orbital angular momentum bi-photon states, when scattered off an obstruction. We show that the decay is controlled by the diffraction-induced mutual overlap between the diffracted field modes, and quantify its dependence on the size and position of the obstruction.
We propose and demonstrate a scheme for boosting up the efficiency of entanglement distribution based on a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) over lossy quantum channels. By using backward propagation of a coherent light, our scheme achieves an entanglement-sharing rate that is proportional to the transmittance T of the quantum channel in spite of encoding qubits in multipartite systems for the DFS. We experimentally show that highly entangled states, which can violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality, are distributed at a rate proportional to T.
We characterize theoretically and experimentally the degradation of polarization entanglement in a fiber-optic entanglement distribution system where one of the optical fibers is exposed to the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD). We show gradual reduction of entanglement with increasing PMD and find that the highest PMD tolerance is achieved when the bandwidth of the pump used to generate the entangled photons in a $χ^{(3)}$ process is approximately half the bandwidth of the quantum channels.
When some of the parties of a multipartite entangled pure state are lost, the question arises whether the residual mixed state is also entangled, in which case the initial entangled pure state is said to be robust against particle loss. In this paper, we investigate this entanglement robustness for $N$-qubit pure states. We identify exhaustively all entangled states that are fragile, i.e., not robust, with respect to the loss of any single qubit of the system. We also study the entanglement robustness properties of symmetric states and put these properties in the perspective of the classificat…
We present criteria to detect the depth of entanglement in macroscopic ensembles of spin-j particles using the variance and second moments of the collective spin components. The class of states detected goes beyond traditional spin-squeezed states by including Dicke states and other unpolarized states. The criteria derived are easy to evaluate numerically even for systems of very many particles and outperform past approaches, especially in practical situations where noise is present. We also derive analytic lower bounds based on the linearization of our criteria, which make it possible to defi…
We present a study of the achievable rates for classical information transmission via a lossy bosonic channel with memory, using homodyne detection. A comparison with the memoryless case shows that the presence of memory enhances the bit rate if information is encoded in collective states, i.e. states which are entangled over different uses of the channel.
Trace decreasing dynamical maps are as physical as trace preserving ones; however, they are much less studied. Here we overview how the quantum Sinkhorn theorem can be successfully applied to find a two-qubit entangled state which has the strongest robustness against local noises and losses of quantum information carriers. We solve a practically relevant problem of finding an optimal initial encoding to distribute entangled polarized qubits though communication lines with polarization dependent losses and extra depolarizing noise. The longest entanglement lifetime is shown to be attainable wit…
In this work, we explore the space of quantum states composed of $N$ particles. To investigate the entanglement resistant to particles loss, we introduce the notion of $m$-resistant states. A quantum state is $m$-resistant if it remains entangled after losing an arbitrary subset of m particles, but becomes separable after losing a number of particles larger than $m$. We establish an analogy to the problem of designing a topological link consisting of $N$ rings such that, after cutting any $(m + 1)$ of them, the remaining rings become disconnected. We present a constructive solution to this pro…
We propose a scheme of loss resilient entanglement swapping between two distant parties in lossy optical fibre. In this scheme, Alice and Bob each begin with a pair of entangled non-classical states; these "hybrid states" of light are entangled discrete variable (Fock state) and continuous variable (coherent state) pairs. The continuous variable halves of each of these pairs are sent through lossy optical fibre to a middle location, where these states are then mixed (using a 50:50 beam-splitter) and measured. The detection scheme we use is to measure one of these modes via vacuum detection, an…
We examined the possibility of recovering the losses of entanglement and the non-local advantage by using the local symmetric operations. The improvement efficiency may be increased by applying the symmetric operations on both qubits. The recovering process of both phenomenon is exhibited clearly when only one qubit is accelerated and the symmetric operations is applied on both qubits. It is shown that, for large acceleration, the non-local coherent advantage may be re-birthed by using these symmetric operations.
We show the decrease of spin-spin entanglement between two s=1/2 fermions or two photons due to local transfer of correlations from the spin to the momentum degree of freedom of one of the two particles. We explicitly show how this phenomenon operates in the case where one of the two fermions (photons) passes through a local homogeneous magnetic field (optically-active medium), losing its spin correlations with the other particle.
In optical interferometry multi-mode entanglement is often assumed to be the driving force behind quantum enhanced measurements. Recent work has shown this assumption to be false: single mode quantum states perform just as well as their multi-mode entangled counterparts. We go beyond this to show that when photon losses occur - an inevitability in any realistic system - multi-mode entanglement is actually detrimental to obtaining quantum enhanced measurements. We specifically apply this idea to a superposition of coherent states, demonstrating that these states show a robustness to loss that a…
In this work we examine the entanglement of the output signal-idler squeezed vacuum state in the Heisenberg picture as a function of the coupling and internal propagation loss parameters of a microring resonator. Using the log-negativity as a measure of entanglement for a mixed Gaussian state, we examine the competitive effects of the transfer matrix that encodes the classical phenomenological loss, as well as the matrix that that incorporates the coupling and internal propagation loss due to the quantum Langevin noise fields required to preserve unitarity of the composite system,(signal-idler…
In order to implement fault-tolerant quantum computation, entanglement generation with low error probability and high success probability is required. We have proposed the use of squeezed coherent light as a probe to generate entanglement between two atoms by communication, and shown that the error probability is reduced well below the threshold of fault-tolerant quantum computation [Phys. Rev. A. {\bf 88}, 022313 (2013)]. Here, we investigate the effect of photon loss mainly due to finite coupling efficiency to the cavity. The error probability with the photon loss is calculated by the beam-s…
Entanglement distillation is a key primitive for distributing high-quality entanglement between remote locations. Probabilistic noiseless linear amplification based on the quantum scissors is a candidate for entanglement distillation from noisy continuous-variable (CV) entangled states. Being a non-Gaussian operation, quantum scissors is challenging to analyze. We present a derivation of the non-Gaussian state heralded by multiple quantum scissors in a pure loss channel with two-mode squeezed vacuum input. We choose the reverse coherent information (RCI)---a proven lower bound on the distillab…
We study the dynamics of genuine multipartite entanglement for quantum systems upto four qubits interacting with general collective dephasing process. Using a computable entanglement monotone for multipartite systems, we observe the feature of freezing dynamics of genuine entanglement for three and four qubits entangled states. We compare the dynamics with that of random states and find that most states exibit this feature. We then study the effects of collective dephasing on genuine nonlocality and find out that although quantum states remain genuinely entangled yet their genuine nonlocality …
We analyze three quantum communication protocols that have been proposed in the literature, and compare how well they communicate single-rail entanglement. We use specific metrics for output state purity and probability of success and include the presence of imperfect photon source and detection components. We find that a distributed noiseless linear amplification (NLA) protocol with a relay point placed half-way between Alice and Bob outperforms NLA at Bob's end and a recently proposed purification protocol under most conditions, unless the distance is very small or the photon source componen…
The propagation of polarization-entangled states of light through fluctuating loss channels in the turbulent atmosphere is studied, including the situation of strong losses. We consider violations of Bell inequalities by light, emitted by a parametric down-conversion source, after transmission through the turbulent atmosphere. It is shown by analytical calculations, that in the presence of background radiation and dark counts, fluctuating loss channels may preserve entanglement properties of light even better than standard loss channels, when postselected measurements are applied.
We consider quantum key distribution (QKD) and entanglement distribution using a single-sender multiple-receiver pure-loss bosonic broadcast channel. We determine the unconstrained capacity region for the distillation of bipartite entanglement and secret key between the sender and each receiver, whenever they are allowed arbitrary public classical communication. A practical implication of our result is that the capacity region demonstrated drastically improves upon rates achievable using a naive time-sharing strategy, which has been employed in previously demonstrated network QKD systems. We s…

The sensitivity of entanglement to the thermal and squeezed reservoirs' parameters is investigated regarding entanglement decay and what is called sudden-death of entanglement, ESD, for a system of two qubit pairs. The dynamics of information is investigated by means of the information disturbance and exchange information. We show that for squeezed reservoir, we can keep both of the entanglement and information survival for a long time. The sudden death of information is seen in the case of thermal reservoir.
Decoherence effect on quantum entanglement of two optical qubits in a lossy cavity interacting with a nonlinear medium (Kerr nonlinearity) is analyzed. The qubits are assumed to be initially in the maximally entangled states (Bell or Bell-like states) or the maximally entangled mixed states, on the example of Werner and Werner-like states. Two kinds of measures of the entanglement are considered: the concurrence to describe a decay of the entanglement of formation of the qubits, and the negativity to determine a decay of the entanglement cost under positive-partial-transpose-preserving operati…
We present analytical and numerical simulation results for squeezing, entanglement, and quantum discord in a dissipatively coupled coherent Ising machine (CIM). Both analytical solutions and numerical simulation results, which are obtained with positive-P, truncated-Wigner and truncated-Husimi representations for the density operator, predict the presence of entanglement and quantum discord, below and above the threshold of CIM. The entanglement criteria and quantum discord are evaluated as a function of the dissipative coupling strength relative to the background loss. For coupled two DOPOs, …
In this paper we investigate a open two-qubit model whose dynamics is not exactly solvable. When the initial state is the maximum entangled state, as the exactly solvable open two-qubit model [D. Tolkunov and V. Privman, Phys. Rev. A 71, 060308(R) (2005)], the decay of entanglement of formation of the model, expressed by concurrence is also governed by the product of suppression factors describing decoherence of the subsystems (qubits). However, if the initial state is not the maximum entangled state, its concurrence will decrease faster than the product of the suppression factors describing d…
We propose a scheme to prepare a maximally entangled state for two Lambda-type atoms trapped in separate optical cavities coupled through an optical fiber based on the combined effect of the unitary dynamics and the dissipative process. Our work shows that the fiber loss, as well as the atomic spontaneous emission and the cavity decay, is no longer undesirable, but requisite to prepare the distributed entanglement, which is meaningful for the long distance quantum information processing tasks. Originating from an arbitrary state, the desired state could be prepared without precise time control…
Subtracting photons from a two-mode squeezed state is a well-known method to increase entanglement. We analyse different strategies of local photon subtraction from a two-mode squeezed state in terms of entanglement gain and success probability. We develop a general framework that incorporates imperfections and losses in all stages of the process: before, during, and after subtraction. By combining all three effects into a single efficiency parameter, we provide analytical and numerical results for subtraction strategies using photon-number-resolving and threshold detectors. We compare the ent…
In this paper we study the $C^*$-convex set of unital entanglement breaking (EB-)maps on matrix algebras. General properties and an abstract characterization of $C^*$-extreme points are discussed. By establishing a Radon-Nikodym type theorem for a class of EB-maps we give a complete description of the $C^*$-extreme points. It is shown that a unital EB-map $Φ:M_{d_1}\to M_{d_2}$ is $C^*$-extreme if and only if it has Choi-rank equal to $d_2$. Finally, as a direct consequence of the Holevo form of EB-maps, we derive a noncommutative analogue of the Krein-Milman theorem for $C^*$-convexity of the…
Transferring quantum information between distant nodes of a network is a key capability. This transfer can be realized via remote state preparation where two parties share entanglement and the sender has full knowledge of the state to be communicated. Here we demonstrate such a process between heterogeneous nodes functioning with different information encodings, i.e., particle-like discrete-variable optical qubits and wave-like continuous-variable ones. Using hybrid entanglement of light as a shared resource, we prepare arbitrary coherent-state superpositions controlled by measurements on the …
We propose the use of hybrid entanglement in an entanglement swapping protocol, as means of distributing a Bell state with high fidelity to two parties, Alice and Bob. The hybrid entanglement used in this work is described as a discrete variable (Fock state) and a continuous variable (cat state superposition) entangled state. We model equal and unequal levels of photonic loss between the two propagating continuous variable modes, before detecting these states via a projective vacuum-one-photon measurement, and the other mode via balanced homodyne detection. We investigate homodyne measurement …
Effective quantum communication between remote quantum nodes requires high fidelity quantum state transfer and remote entanglement generation. Recent experiments have demonstrated that microwave photons, as well as phonons, can be used to couple superconducting qubits, with a fidelity limited primarily by loss in the communication channel. Adiabatic protocols can overcome channel loss by transferring quantum states without populating the lossy communication channel. Here we present a unique superconducting quantum communication system, comprising two superconducting qubits connected by a 0.73 …
The characterization of an infinite-order quantum phase transition (QPT) by entanglement measures is analyzed. To this aim, we consider two closely related solvable spin-1/2 chains, namely, the Ashkin-Teller and the staggered XXZ models. These systems display a distinct pattern of eigenstates but exhibit the same thermodynamics, i.e. the same energy spectrum. By performing exact diagonalization, we investigate the behavior of pairwise and block entanglement in the ground state of both models. In contrast with the XXZ chain, we show that pairwise entanglement fails in the characterization of th…
I explore entanglement dynamics in examples of quantum memories, decoherence free subspaces (DFS) and noiseless subsystems (NS), to determine how a complete loss of entanglement affects the ability of these techniques to protect quantum information. Using negativity and concurrence as entanglement measures, I find that in general there is no correlation between the complete loss of entanglement in the system and the fidelity of the stored quantum information. These results complement previous results in which quantum protocols not explictly based on entanglement exhibit little correlation betw…
