[Abridged] We compute the canonical entropy of a quantum scalar field around static and spherically symmetric black holes through the brick wall approach at the higher orders (in fact, up to the sixth order in \hbar) in the WKB approximation. We explicitly show that the brick wall model generally predicts corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in all spacetime dimensions. In four dimensions, we find that the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy are of the form (A^n \log A), while, in six dimensions, the corrections behave as (A^m + A^n \log A), where A denotes the area of the black hole event horizon, and (m, n) < 1. We compare our results with the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy that have been obtained through the other approaches in the literature, and discuss the implications.
We re-examine the brick-wall model in the context of spacetime foam. In particular we consider a foam composed by wormholes of different sizes filling the black hole horizon. The contribution of such wormholes is computed via a scale invariant distribution. We obtain that the brick wall divergence appears to be logarithmic when the cutoff is sent to zero.
Quantum field theory in the near-horizon region of a black hole predicts the existence of an infinite number of degenerate modes. Such a degeneracy is regulated in the brick wall model by the introduction of a short distance cutoff. In this Letter we show that states of the brick wall model with non zero energy admit a further degeneracy for any given finite value of the cutoff. The black hole entropy is calculated within the brick wall model taking this degeneracy into account. Modes with complex frequencies however do not exhibit such a degeneracy.
We compute the black hole horizon entanglement entropy for a massless scalar field in the brick wall model by incorporating the minimal length. Taking the minimal length effects on the occupation number $n(ω,l)$ and the Hawking temperature into consideration, we obtain the leading UV divergent term and the subleading logarithmic term in the entropy. The leading divergent term scales with the horizon area. The subleading logarithmic term is the same as that in the usual brick wall model without the minimal length.
The brick-wall model seeks to explain the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy as a wall-contribution to the thermal energy of ambient quantum fields raised to the Hawking temperature. Reservations have been expressed concerning the self-consistency of this model. For example, it predicts large thermal energy densities near the wall, producing a substantial mass-correction and, presumably, a large gravitational back-reaction. We re-examine this model and conclude that these reservations are unfounded once the ground state---the Boulware state---is correctly identified. We argue that the brick-wall model…
Using the brick wall method, we study statistical entropy for spherically symmetric black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In particular, a Lifshitz scalar field is considered in order to incorporate foliation preserving diffeomorphism which eventually gives a modified dispersion relation. Finally, we obtain the area law without UV cutoff for $z > 3$, and discuss some of consequences in connection with the generalized uncertainty principle.
The statistical entropy of a scalar field on the warped AdS$_3$ black hole in the cosmological topologically massive gravity is calculated based on the brick-wall method, which is different from the Wald's entropy formula giving the modified area law due to the higher-derivative corrections in that the entropy still satisfies the area law. It means that the entropy for scalar excitations on this background is independent of higher-order derivative terms or the conventional brick wall method has some limitations to take into account the higher-derivative terms.
In this work we review, in the framework of the so-called brick wall model, the divergence problem arising in the one loop calculations of various thermodynamical quantities, like entropy, internal energy and heat capacity. Particularly we find that, if one imposes that entanglement entropy is equal to the Bekenstein-Hawking one, the model gives problematic results. Then a proposal of solution to the divergence problem is made following the zeroth law of black hole mechanics.
The properties of the thermal radiation are discussed by using the new equation of state density motivated by the generalized uncertainty relation in the quantum gravity. There is no burst at the last stage of the emission of a Schwarzshild black hole. When the new equation of state density is utilized to investigate the entropy of a scalar field outside the horizon of a static black hole, the divergence appearing in the brick wall model is removed, without any cutoff. The entropy proportional to the horizon area is derived from the contribution of the vicinity of the horizon.
A semi-classical reasoning leads to the non-commutativity of the space and time coordinates near the horizon of Schwarzschild black hole. This non-commutativity in turn provides a mechanism to interpret the brick wall thickness hypothesis in 't Hooft's brick wall model as well as the boundary condition imposed for the field considered. For concreteness, we consider a noncommutative scalar field model near the horizon and derive the effective metric via the equation of motion of noncommutative scalar field. This metric displays a new horizon in addition to the original one associated with the S…
There have been many attempts to understand the statistical origin of black-hole entropy. Among them, entanglement entropy and the brick wall model are strong candidates. In this paper we show a relation between entanglement entropy and the brick wall model: the brick wall model seeks the maximal value of the entanglement entropy. In other words, the entanglement approach reduces to the brick wall model when we seek the maximal entanglement entropy .
The brick wall method in calculations of the entropy of black holes can be applied to the FRW cosmology in order to study the statistical entropy. An appropriate cutoff satisfying the covariant entropy bound can be chosen so that the entropy has a definite bound. Among the entropy for each of cosmological eras, the vacuum energy-dominated era turns out to give the maximal entropy which is in fact compatible with assumptions from the brick wall method.
In order to understand the physical effect of the brick wall boundary condition, we compute the distribution of the zero-point energy of the massless scalar fields minimally coupled to the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black hole backgrounds. We find that the black hole radiation spectrum depends on the positions of the brick wall and the observer, and reveals the interference effect due to the reflected field by the brick wall.
During the last few years, exact solutions that describe black holes that are bound to a two-brane in a four dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk have been constructed. In situations wherein there is a negative cosmological constant on the brane, for large masses, these solutions are exactly the rotating BTZ black holes on the brane and, in fact, describe rotating BTZ black strings in the bulk. We evaluate the canonical entropy of a free and massless scalar field (at the Hawking temperature) around the rotating BTZ black string using the brick wall model. We explicitly show that the Bekenstein-Hawk…
We consider the entropy of a quantum scalar field on a background black hole geometry in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time, using the ``brick wall'' approach. In anti-de Sitter space, the theory has no infra-red divergences, and all ultra-violet divergences can be absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constants in the one-loop effective gravitational Lagrangian. We then calculate the finite renormalized entropy for the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter and extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes, and show that, at least for large black holes, the entropy is entirely …
We present evidence which confirms a suggestion by Susskind and Uglum regarding black hole entropy. Using a Pauli-Villars regulator, we find that 't Hooft's approach to evaluating black hole entropy through a statistical-mechanical counting of states for a scalar field propagating outside the event horizon yields precisely the one-loop renormalization of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking formula, $S=\A/(4G)$. Our calculation also yields a constant contribution to the black hole entropy, a contribution associated with the one-loop renormalization of higher curvature terms in the gravitational act…
Motivated by the works on Equivalence Principle in the context of linear Generalized Uncertainty Principle and, independently, in the context of quadratic Generalized Uncertainty Principle, we expand these endeavors in the context of Generalized Uncertainty Principle when both linear and quadratic terms in momentum are include. We demonstrate how the definitions of equations of motion change upon that expansion. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Liouville theorem in the presence of linear and quadratic Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We employ the corresponding modified invariant un…
Within the framework of the "brick wall model", a novel method is developed to compute the contributions of a scalar field to the thermodynamic quantities of black holes. The relations between (transverse) momenta and frequencies in Rindler space are determined numerically with high accuracy and analytically with an accuracy of better than 10 % and are compared with the corresponding quantities in Minkowski space. In conflict with earlier results, the thermodynamic properties of black holes turn out to be those of a low temperature system. The resulting discrepancy for partition function and e…
We discuss the relationship between the bulk-boundary correspondence in Rehren's algebraic holography (and in other 'fixed-background' approaches to holography) and in mainstream 'Maldacena AdS/CFT'. Especially, we contrast the understanding of black-hole entropy from the viewpoint of QFT in curved spacetime -- in the framework of 't Hooft's 'brick wall' model -- with the understanding based on Maldacena AdS/CFT. We show that the brick-wall modification of a Klein Gordon field in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state on 1+2-Schwarzschild AdS (BTZ) has a well-defined boundary limit with the same temp…
We study the 't Hooft's brick wall model for black holes in a holographic context. The brick wall model suggests that without an appropriate near horizon IR cut-off, the free energy of the probe fields show the divergence due to the large degenerate states near the horizons. After studying the universal nature of the divergence in various holographic setting in various dimensions, we interpret the nature of the divergence in a holographic context. The free energy divergence is due to the large degeneracy and continuity of the low energy spectrum in the boundary theory at the deconfinement phas…
Using the brick wall regularization of 't Hooft, the entropy of non-extreme and extreme black holes is investigated in a general static, spherically symmetric spacetime. We classify the singularity in the entropy by introducing a {\it new} index $δ$ with respect to the brick wall cut-off $ε$. The leading contribution to entropy for non-extreme case $(δ\neq 0)$ is shown to satisfy the area law with quadratic divergence with respect to the invariant cut-off $ε_{\rm inv}$ while the extreme case $(δ=0)$ exhibits logarithmic divergence or constant value with respect to $ε$. The general formula is a…
The stability of the brick wall model is analyzed in a rotating background. It is shown that in the Kerr background without horizon but with an inner boundary a scalar field has complex-frequency modes and that, however, the imaginary part of the complex frequency can be small enough compared with the Hawking temperature if the inner boundary is sufficiently close to the horizon, say at a proper altitude of Planck scale. Hence, the time scale of the instability due to the complex frequencies is much longer than the relaxation time scale of the thermal state with the Hawking temperature. Since …
We revisit the "brick wall" model for black hole entropy taking into account back-reaction effects on the horizon structure. We do so by adopting an evaporating metric in the quasi-static approximation in which departures from the standard Schwarzschild metric are governed by a small luminosity factor. One of the effects of the back-reaction is to create an ergosphere-like region which naturally tames the usual divergence in the calculation of the partition function of the field. The black hole luminosity sets the width of such "quantum ergosphere". We find a finite horizon contribution to the…
By using the 't Hooft's "brick wall" model and the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme we calculate the statistical-mechanical entropies arising from the quantum scalar field in different coordinate settings, such as the Painlevé and Lemaitre coordinates. At first glance, it seems that the entropies would be different from that in the standard Schwarzschild coordinate since the metrics in both the Painlevé and Lemaitre coordinates do not possess the singularity at the event horizon as that in the Schwarzschild-like coordinate. However, after an exact calculation we find that, up to the sublead…

The entropy of the Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black hole in the recently proposed four-dimensional critical gravity is trivial in the Euclidean action formulation, while it is expressed by the area law in terms of the brick wall method given by 't Hooft. To resolve this issue, we relate the Euclidean action formulation to the brick wall method semiclassically, and show that the entropy of the black hole can be expressed by the area law at the critical point.
We quantize a scalar field at finite temperature T in the background of a classical black hole, adopting 't Hooft's ``brick wall'' model with generic mixed boundary conditions at the brick wall boundary. We first focus on the exactly solvable case of two dimensional space-time. As expected, the energy density is integrable in the limit of vanishing brick wall thickness only for T=T_H - the Hawking temperature. Consistently with the most general stress energy tensor allowed in this background, the energy density shows a surface contribution localized on the horizon. We point out that the usual …
Entropy of the Kerr-Newman black hole is calculated via the brick wall method with maintaining careful attention to the contribution of superradiant scalar modes. It turns out that the nonsuperradinat and superradiant modes simultaneously contribute to the entropy with the same order in terms of the brick wall cutoff $ε$. In particular, the contribution of the superradiant modes to the entropy is negative. To avoid divergency in this method when the angular velocity tends to zero, we propose to intr oduce a lower bound of angular velocity and to treat the case of the angular momentum per unit …

In this thesis properties and the origin of black hole entropy are investigated from various points of view. First, laws of black hole thermodynamics are reviewed. In particular, the first and generalized second laws are investigated in detail. It is in these laws that the black hole entropy plays key roles. Next, three candidates for the origin of the black hole entropy are analyzed: the D-brane statistical-mechanics, the brick wall model, and the entanglement thermodynamics. Finally, discussions are given on semiclassical consistencies of the brick wall model and the entanglement thermodynam…
We compute the black hole entropy in the context of the Modified Dispersion Relations using the brick wall model. An explicit dependence of the radial coordinate approaching the horizon is shown to analyze the behavior of the divergence. We find that, due to the modification of the density of states, the brick wall can be eliminated. By assuming a specific form for the radial coordinate $r(E/E_{P}) $, we examine a possible candidate for $r(E/E_{P}) $. A comparison with the 't Hooft approach is presented.
We consider the effects of Gravity's Rainbow on the computation of black hole entropy using a dynamical brick wall model. An explicit dependence of the radial coordinate approaching the horizon is proposed to analyze the behavior of the divergence. We find that, due to the modification of the density of states, the brick wall can be eliminated. The calculation is extended to include rotations and in particular to a Kerr black hole in a comoving frame.
We consider the thermodynamics of minimally coupled massive scalar field in 3+1 dimensional constant curvature black hole background. The brick wall model of 't Hooft is used. When Schwarzschild like coordinates are used it is found that two radial brick wall cut-off parameters are required to regularize the solution. Free energy of the scalar field is obtained through counting of states using the WKB approximation. It is found that the free energy and the entropy are divergent in both the cut-off parameters.
We consider the thermodynamics of minimally coupled massive scalar field in 3+1 dimensional constant curvature black hole background. The brick wall model of 't Hooft is used. When Scharzschild like coordinates are used it is found that apart from the usual radial brick wall cut-off parammeter an angular cut-off parameter is required to regularize the solution. Free energy of the scalar field is obtained through counting of states using the WKB approximation. It is found that the free energy and the entropy are logarithmically divergent in both the cut-off parameters.
We present a coherent account of how the entanglement interpretation, thermofield dynamical description and the brick wall formulations (with the ground state correctly identified) fit into a connected and self-consistent explanation of what Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is, and where it is located.
We have considered the divergence structure in the brick-wall model for the statistical mechanical entropy of a quantum field in thermal equilibrium with a black hole which {\it rotates}. Especially, the contribution to entropy from superradiant modes is carefully incorporated, leading to a result for this contribution which corrects some previous errors in the literature. It turns out that the previous errors were due to an incorrect quantization of the superradiant modes. Some of main results for the case of rotating BTZ black holes are that the entropy contribution from superradiant modes i…
Using standard coordinates, the Maxwell equations in the Reissner-Nordström geometry are written in terms of a couple of scalar fields satisfying Klein-Gordon like equations. The density of states is derived in the semi-classical approximation and the first quantum corrections to the black hole entropy is computed by using the brick-wall model.
The statistical entropy of the Nariai black hole in a thermal equilibrium is calculated by using the brick-wall method. Even if the temperature depends on the choice of the time-like Killing vector, the entropy can be written by the ordinary area law which agrees with the Wald entropy. We discuss some physical consequences of this result and the properties of the temperatures.
Using brick wall method the entropy of charged dilaton-axion black hole is determined for both asymptotically flat and non-flat cases. The entropy turns out to be proportional to the horizon area of the black hole confirming the Beckenstien, Hawking area-entropy formula for black holes. The leading order logarithmic corrections to the entropy are also derived for such black holes.
The quantum entropy of the Kerr black hole arising from gravitational perturbation is investigated by using Null tetrad and t Hooftś brick-wall model. It is shown that effect of the gravitonś spins on the subleading correction is dependent of the square of the spins and the angular momentum per unit mass of the black hole, and contribution of the logarithmic term to the entropy will be positive, zero, and negative for different value of $a/r_+$.
We discuss the first law of thermodynamics of Bardeen black hole. The presence of magnetic monopole charge modifies the energy and we define the temperature of the system accordingly. We introduce a lower cut-off to the space time by introducing a spherical surface, which can be identified with the event horizon. The corresponding temperature is identified with Hawking temperature. The entropy is assumed to obey the area law and we confirm this by calculating the statistical entropy by using brick wall model.
Based on the generalized uncertainty principle, we study the entropy of a four-dimensional black hole by counting degrees of freedom near the horizon and obtain the (finite) entropy proportional to the surface area at the horizon without a cutoff introduced in the conventional brick-wall method.
By using the Newman-Penrose formalism and 't Hooft brick-wall model, the quantum entropies of the Kerr-Newman black hole due to the Dirac and electromagnetic fields are calculated and the effects of the spins of the photons and Dirac particles on the entropies are investigated. It is shown that the entropies depend only on the square of the spins of the particles and the contribution of the spins is dependent on the rotation of the black hole, except that different fields obey different statistics.
A semiclassical calculation of entropy of a scalar field in the background of a class of brane world black holes (BWBH) is carried out in the presence of a brick wall cutoff when the 5D-bulk induced \textquotedblleft tidal charge" has generic or extreme values.
In this paper the BTZ black hole geometry is probed with a noncommutative scalar field which obeys the $κ$-Minkowski algebra. The entropy of the BTZ black hole is calculated using the brick wall method. The contribution of the noncommutativity to the black hole entropy is explicitly evaluated up to the first order in the deformation parameter. We also argue that such a correction to the black hole entropy can be interpreted as arising from the renormalization of the Newton's constant due to the effects of the noncommutativity.
By using the Newman-Penrose formalism and the improved thin-layer ``brick wall'' approach, the statistical-mechanical entropies of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole arising from quantum massless arbitrary spin fields are studied in the Painlevé and Lemaitre coordinates. Although the metrics in both the Painlevé and the Lemaitre coordinates do not obviously possess the singularities as that in the Schwarzschild-like coordinate, we find that, for arbitrary spin fields, the entropies in the Painlevé and Lemaitre coordinates are exactly equivalent to that in the Schwarzschild-like coordinate.
We discuss massive scalar perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. We argue that quantum effects alter the effective potential near the horizon resulting in Poincare recurrences in Green functions. Results at the semi-classical level are independent of the details of the modification of the potential provided its minimum near the horizon is inversely proportional to the square of the Poincare time. This modification may be viewed as a change in the near-horizon geometry. We consider explicitly the examples of a brick wall, a smooth cutoff and a wormhole-like modification showing that they …
In this paper we investigate statistical entropy of a 3-dimensional rotating acoustic black hole based on generalized uncertainty principle. In our results we obtain an area entropy and a correction term associated with the noncommutative acoustic black hole when $λ$ introduced in the generalized uncertainty principle takes a specific value. However, in this method, it is not needed to introduce the ultraviolet cut-off and divergences are eliminated. Moreover, the small mass approximation is not necessary in the original brick-wall model.
By introducing the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) on quantum density states, we newly obtain a consistent entropy of a scalar field on the (1+1)-dimensional Maxwell-dilaton background without an artificial cutoff in contrast to the results of the brick wall model, which depend on the choice of the Hawking temperature for the extremal case.
We compute the entropy of systems of quantum particles satisfying the fractional exclusion statistics in the space-time of 2+1 dimensional black hole by using the brick-wall method. We show that the entropy of each effective quantum field theory with a Planck scale ultraviolet cutoff obeys the area law, irrespective of the angular momentum of the black hole and the statistics interpolating between Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics.
We calculate the statistical entropy of a rotating hairy black hole by taking into account superradiant modes in the brick wall method. The UV cutoff is independent of the gravitational hair, which gives the well-defined area law of the entropy. It can be shown that the angular momentum and the energy of matter field depend on the gravitational hair. For the vanishing gravitational hair, it turns out that the energy for matter is related to both the black hole mass and the black hole angular momentum whereas the angular momentum for matter field is directly proportional to the angular momentum…
We study the normal modes of a scalar field in the background of a warped AdS_3 black hole which arises in topologically massive gravity. We discuss the normal mode spectrum using the brick wall boundary condition. In addition, we investigate the possibility of a more general boundary condition for the scalar field.
We discuss whether black hole entropy counts short or long range microstates in quantum gravity. In brick wall and induced gravity models the entropy arises due to short distance correlations across the event horizon cut off at the Planck length. However, the energy of these short range degrees of freedom is too high compared to the black hole energy. We argue that the long string phenomenon, which naturally appears in matrix quantum mechanics, resolves this issue by lowering the excitation energy per degree of freedom. This mechanism also reduces the total number of microscopic degrees of fre…
