We explore the quantum-classical crossover in the behaviour of a quantum field mode. The quantum behaviour of a two-state system - a qubit - coupled to the field is used as a probe. Collapse and revival of the qubit inversion form the signature for quantum behaviour of the field and continuous Rabi oscillations form the signature for classical behaviour of the field. We demonstrate both limits in a single model for the full coupled system, for states with the same average field strength, and so for qubits with the same Rabi frequency.
We discuss the quantum--classical correspondence in a specific dissipative chaotic system, Duffing oscillator. We quantize it on the basis of quantum state diffusion (QSD) which is a certain formulation for open quantum systems and an effective tool for analyzing complex problems numerically. We consider a sensitivity to initial conditions, `` pseudo-Lyapunov exponent '', and investigate it in detail, varying Planck constant effectively. We show that in a dissipative system there exists a certain critical stage in which the crossover from classical to quantum behavior occurs. Furthermore, we s…
We study microwave response of a Josephson parametric oscillator consisting of a superconducting transmission-line resonator with an embedded dc-SQUID. The dc-SQUID allows to control the magnitude of a Kerr nonlinearity over the ranges where it is smaller or larger than the photon loss rate. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the change of the microwave response from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator in a single device. In the single-photon Kerr regime, we observe parametric oscillations with a well-defined phase of either $0$ or $π$, whose probability can be control…
We explore the quantum-classical crossover of two coupled, identical, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) rings. We note that the motivation for this work is based on a study of a similar system comprising two coupled Duffing oscillators. In that work we showed that the entanglement characteristics of chaotic and periodic (entrained) solutions differed significantly and that in the classical limit entanglement was preserved only in the chaotic-like solutions. However, Duffing oscillators are a highly idealised toy model. Motivated by a wish to explore more experimentally realis…
Emergence of a classical particle trajectory concept from the full quantum description is a key feature of quantum mechanics. Recent progress of solid state on-demand sources has brought single-electron manipulation into the quantum regime, however, the quantum-to-classical crossover remains unprobed. Here we describe theoretically a mechanism for generating single-electron wave packets by tunneling from a driven localized state, and show how to tune the degree of quantumness. Applying our theory to existing on-demand sources, we demonstrate the feasibility of an experimental investigation of …
We introduce a simple criterion for lattice models to predict quantitatively the crossover between the classical and the quantum scaling of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, as the one observed in a quantum $ϕ^4$-model on a 1D lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 225701 (2016)]. We corroborate that the crossover is a general feature of critical models on a lattice, by testing our paradigm on the quantum Ising model in transverse field for arbitrary spin-$s$ ($s \geq 1/2$) in one spatial dimension. By means of tensor network methods, we fully characterize the equilibrium properties of this model, and locat…
By analyzing the dissipative dynamics of a tunable gap flux qubit, we extract both sides of its two-sided environmental flux noise spectral density over a range of frequencies around $2k_BT/h \approx 1\,\rm{GHz}$, allowing for the observation of a classical-quantum crossover. Below the crossover point, the symmetric noise component follows a $1/f$ power law that matches the magnitude of the $1/f$ noise near $1\,{\rm{Hz}}$. The antisymmetric component displays a 1/T dependence below $100\,\rm{mK}$, providing dynamical evidence for a paramagnetic environment. Extrapolating the two-sided spectrum…
In the semiclassical limit of open ballistic quantum systems, we demonstrate the emergence of instantaneous decay modes guided by classical escape faster than the Ehrenfest time. The decay time of the associated quasi-bound states is smaller than the classical time of flight. The remaining long-lived quasi-bound states obey random-matrix statistics, renormalized in compliance with the recently proposed fractal Weyl law for open systems [W. T. Lu, S. Sridhar, and M. Zworski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 154101 (2003)]. We validate our theory numerically for a model system, the open kicked rotator.
The Kibble-Zurek (KZ) hypothesis identifies the relevant time scales in out-of-equilibrium dynamics of critical systems employing concepts valid at equilibrium: It predicts the scaling of the defect formation immediately after quenches across classical and quantum phase transitions as a function of the quench speed. Here we study the crossover between the scaling dictated by a slow quench, which is ruled by the critical properties of the quantum phase transition, and the excitations due to a faster quench, where the dynamics is often well described by the classical model. We estimate the value…
We show that particle transport in a uniform, quantum multi-baker map, is generically ballistic in the long time limit, for any fixed value of Planck's constant. However, for fixed times, the semi-classical limit leads to diffusion. Random matrix theory provides explicit analytical predictions for the mean square displacement of a particle in the system. These results exhibit a crossover from diffusive to ballistic motion, with crossover time from diffusive to ballistic motion on the order of the inverse of Planck's constant. We can argue, that for a large class of 1D quantum random walks, sim…
Tensor-network methods are used to perform a comparative study of the two-dimensional classical Heisenberg and $\mathrm{RP}^2$ models. We demonstrate that uniform matrix product states (MPS) with explicit $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ symmetry can probe correlation lengths up to $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ sites accurately, and we study the scaling of entanglement entropy and universal features of MPS entanglement spectra. For the Heisenberg model, we find no signs of a finite-temperature phase transition, supporting the scenario of asymptotic freedom. For the $\mathrm{RP}^2$ model we observe an abrupt onset of sc…
The effect of unitary noise on the discrete one-dimensional quantum walk is studied using computer simulations. For the noiseless quantum walk, starting at the origin (n=0) at time t=0, the position distribution Pt(n) at time t is very different from the Gaussian distribution obtained for the classical random walk. Furthermore, its standard deviation, sigma(t) scales as sigma(t) ~ t, unlike the classical random walk for which sigma(t) ~ sqrt{t}. It is shown that when the quantum walk is exposed to unitary noise, it exhibits a crossover from quantum behavior for short times to classical-like be…
In the context of evolutionary quantum computing in the literal meaning, a quantum crossover operation has not been introduced so far. Here, we introduce a novel quantum genetic algorithm which has a quantum crossover procedure performing crossovers among all chromosomes in parallel for each generation. A complexity analysis shows that a quadratic speedup is achieved over its classical counterpart in the dominant factor of the run time to handle each generation.
We present and discuss a formal approach for describing the quantum to classical crossover based on the group-theoretic construction of generalized coherent states. The method was originally introduced by L. Yaffe in 1982 for tackling large-$N$ quantum field theories, and has been recently used for studying open quantum systems whose environment, while becoming macroscopic, may or may not display a classical behaviour. Referring to these recent developments, in this paper we provide the essential elements of Yaffes's approach in the framework of standard quantum mechanics, so as to clarify how…
We derive an expression for the mean square displacement of a particle whose motion is governed by a uniform, periodic, quantum multi-baker map. The expression is a function of both time, $t$, and Planck's constant, $\hbar$, and allows a study of both the long time, $t\to\infty$, and semi-classical, $\hbar\to 0$, limits taken in either order. We evaluate the expression using random matrix theory as well as numerically, and observe good agreement between both sets of results. The long time limit shows that particle transport is generically ballistic, for any fixed value of Planck's constant. Ho…
We propose an approach to the study of open quantum systems based on a parametric representation of the principal system. The representation is obtained introducing generalized coherent states for the environment, and is such that the evolution from a fully quantum environment to a classical one can be inherently followed. The method is applied to the specific case where the principal system is a central qubit and the environment is a surrounding ring of interacting spins, with the overall Hamiltonian being that of the $s=1/2$ Heisenberg star with frustration. In this case the quantum characte…

Modern, state of the art nanomechanical devices are capable of creating spatial superpositions that are massive enough to begin to experimentally access the quantum to classical crossover, and thus force us to consider the possible ways in which the usual quantum dynamics may be affected. One recent theoretical proposal describes the crossover from unitary quantum mechanics to classical dynamics as a form of spontaneous symmetry breaking. Here, we propose a specific experimental setup capable of identifying the source of unitarity breaking in such a mechanism. The experiment is aimed specifica…
An algebraic approach is formulated in the harmonic approximation to describe a dynamics of two-fermion systems, confined in three-dimensional axially symmetric parabolic potential, in an external magnetic field. The fermion interaction is considered in the form U_(M)(r)= alpha_(M)r^{-M} (alpha_(M)>0, M>0). The formalism of a semi-simple Lie group is applied to analyse symmetries of the considered system. Explicit algebraic expressions are derived in terms of system's parameters and the magnetic field strength to trace the evolution of the equilibrium shape. It is predicted that the interplay …

We study the crossover of the quantum Loschmidt echo (or fidelity) from the golden rule regime to the perturbation-independent exponential decay regime by using the kicked top model. It is shown that the deviation of the perturbation-independent decay of the averaged fidelity from the Lyapunov decay results from quantum fluctuations in individual fidelity, which are caused by the coherence in the initial coherent states. With an averaging procedure suppressing the quantum fluctuations effectively, the perturbation-independent decay is found to be close to the Lyapunov decay. We also show that …
For suitable parameters, the classical Duffing oscillator has a known bistability in its stationary states, with low- and high-amplitude branches. As expected from the analogy with a particle in a double-well potential, transitions between these states become possible either at finite temperature, or in the quantum regime due to tunneling. In this analogy, besides local stability, one can also discuss global stability by comparing the two potential minima. For the Duffing oscillator, the stationary states emerge dynamically so that a priori, a potential-minimum criterion for them does not exis…
Quantum weak chaos is studied in a perturbed degenerate system --- a charged particle interacting with a monochromatic wave in a transverse magnetic field. The evolution operator for an arbitrary number of periods of the external field is built and its structure is explored in terms of the QE (quasienergy eigenstates) under resonance condition (wave frequency $=$ cyclotron frequency) in the regime of weak classical chaos. The new phenomenon of diffusion via the quantum separatrices and the influence of chaos on diffusion are investigated and, in the quasi classical limit, compared with its cla…
Based on previous works, analytical calculational procedures for dealing with the strongly interacting fermions ground state are further developed through a medium dependent potential in terms of the Bethe-Peierls contact interaction model. The methods are exact in the unitary limit regime and they lead to the self-consistent equations analogous to the Hartree ones. The single particle energy spectrum rearrangement effects on the thermodynamics due to the Hugenholtz-van Hove theorem constraint are addressed. These effects lead to an additional instantaneous correlation potential contribution t…
