We explore the quantum-classical crossover of two coupled, identical, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) rings. We note that the motivation for this work is based on a study of a similar system comprising two coupled Duffing oscillators. In that work we showed that the entanglement characteristics of chaotic and periodic (entrained) solutions differed significantly and that in the classical limit entanglement was preserved only in the chaotic-like solutions. However, Duffing oscillators are a highly idealised toy model. Motivated by a wish to explore more experimentally realisable systems we now extend our work to an analysis of two coupled SQUID rings. We observe some differences in behaviour between the system that is based on SQUID rings rather than on Duffing oscillators. However, we show that the two systems share a common feature. That is, even when the SQUID ring's trajectories appear to follow (semi) classical orbits entanglement persists.
In this work, we study the coupling between a superconducting device as a dc SQUID, simulated from an artificial atom with two degrees of freedom, and a single-mode radiation field for the information transference process. We demonstrate that the population transfer among the energy levels of the artificial atom yields an entanglement dynamics, which leads to the generation of a pair of photons. Moreover, we show the quantum information transference between the internal modes of the superconducting device, initially in a maximally entangled state, and the radiation field. The artificial atom a…
Possible realization of entanglement, logical gates and quantum information transfer with superconducting-quantum-interference-device qubits in cavity QED
We study microwave response of a Josephson parametric oscillator consisting of a superconducting transmission-line resonator with an embedded dc-SQUID. The dc-SQUID allows to control the magnitude of a Kerr nonlinearity over the ranges where it is smaller or larger than the photon loss rate. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the change of the microwave response from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator in a single device. In the single-photon Kerr regime, we observe parametric oscillations with a well-defined phase of either $0$ or $π$, whose probability can be control…
Entangled pairs of microwave photons are commonly produced in the narrow frequency band of a resonator, which represents a modified vacuum density of states. We use a broadband, semi-infinite transmission line terminated by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). A weak pump signal modulates the SQUID inductance, resulting in a single time-varying boundary condition. We detect both quadratures of the microwave radiation emitted at two different frequencies separated by 0.7~GHz. We determine the type and purity of entanglement from the noise correlations and an in-situ noise and …
Exploiting multiple modes in a quantum acoustic device could enable applications in quantum information in a hardware-efficient setup, including quantum simulation in a synthetic dimension and continuous-variable quantum computing with cluster states. We develop a multimode surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator with a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) integrated in one of the Bragg reflectors. The interaction with the SQUID-shunted mirror gives rise to coupling between the more than 20 accessible resonator modes. We exploit this coupling to demonstrate two-mode squeezing of SA…

Networks of nonlinear resonators offer intriguing perspectives as quantum simulators for non-equilibrium many-body phases of driven-dissipative systems. Here, we employ photon correlation measurements to study the radiation fields emitted from a system of two superconducting resonators, coupled nonlinearly by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). We apply a parametrically modulated magnetic flux to control the linear photon hopping rate between the two resonators and its ratio with the cross-Kerr rate. When increasing the hopping rate, we observe a crossover from an ordered to…
Quantum logic operations and creation of entanglement in a scalable superconducting quantum computer with long-range constant interaction between qubits
We use a noisy signal with finite correlation time to drive a spin (dissipative impurity) in the quantum XY spin chain and calculate the dynamics of entanglement entropy of a bipartition of spins, for a stochastic quantum trajectory. We compute the noise averaged entanglement entropy of a bipartition of spins and observe that its speed of spreading decreases at strong dissipation, as a result of the Zeno effect. We recover the Zeno crossover and show that noise averaged entanglement entropy can be used as a proxy for the heating and Zeno regimes. Upon increasing the correlation time of the noi…
We study the entanglement dynamics for two independent superconducting qubits each affected by a bistable impurity generating random telegraph noise (RTN) at pure dephasing. The relevant parameter is the ratio $g$ between qubit-RTN coupling strength and RTN switching rate, that captures the physics of the crossover between Markovian and non-Markovian features of the dynamics. For identical qubit-RTN subsystems, a threshold value $g_\mathrm{th}$ of the crossover parameter separates exponential decay and onset of revivals; different qualitative behaviors also show up by changing the initial cond…
For the typical quantum many-body systems that obey the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), we argue that the entanglement entropy of (almost) all energy eigenstates is described by a single crossover function. The ETH implies that the crossover functions can be deduced from subsystem entropies of thermal ensembles and have universal properties. These functions capture the full crossover from the groundstate entanglement regime at low energies and small subsystem size (area or log-area law) to the extensive volume-law regime at high energies or large subsystem size. For critical one-di…
For quantum matter, eigenstate entanglement entropies obey an area law or log-area law at low energies and small subsystem sizes and cross over to volume laws for high energies and large subsystems. This transition is captured by crossover functions, which assume a universal scaling form in quantum critical regimes. We demonstrate this for the harmonic lattice model, which describes quantized lattice vibrations and is a regularization for free scalar field theories, modeling, e.g., spin-0 bosonic particles. In one dimension, the groundstate entanglement obeys a log-area law. For dimensions $d\…

Entanglement is the defining characteristic of quantum mechanics. Bipartite entanglement is characterized by the von Neumann entropy. Entanglement is not just described by a number, however; it is also characterized by its level of complexity. The complexity of entanglement is at the root of the onset of quantum chaos, universal distribution of entanglement spectrum statistics, hardness of a disentangling algorithm and of the quantum machine learning of an unknown random circuit, and universal temporal entanglement fluctuations. In this paper, we numerically show how a crossover from a simple …
We study a simple model describing superradiance in a system of two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode bosonic field. The model permits a continuous crossover between integrable and partially chaotic regimes and shows a complex thermodynamic and quantum phase structure. Several types of excited-state quantum phase transitions separate quantum phases that are characterized by specific energy dependences of various observables and by different atom-field and atom-atom entanglement properties. We observe an approximate revival of some states from the weak atom-field coupling limit in the …
Tensor-network methods are used to perform a comparative study of the two-dimensional classical Heisenberg and $\mathrm{RP}^2$ models. We demonstrate that uniform matrix product states (MPS) with explicit $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ symmetry can probe correlation lengths up to $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ sites accurately, and we study the scaling of entanglement entropy and universal features of MPS entanglement spectra. For the Heisenberg model, we find no signs of a finite-temperature phase transition, supporting the scenario of asymptotic freedom. For the $\mathrm{RP}^2$ model we observe an abrupt onset of sc…
We study three different measures of quantum correlations -- entanglement spectrum, entanglement entropy, and logarithmic negativity -- for (1+1)-dimensional massive scalar field in flat spacetime. The entanglement spectrum for the discretized scalar field in the ground state indicates a cross-over in the zero-mode regime, which is further substantiated by an analytical treatment of both entanglement entropy and logarithmic negativity. The exact nature of this cross-over depends on the boundary conditions used -- the leading order term switches from a $\log$ to $\log-\log$ behavior for the Per…
We study the entanglement and memristive properties of three coupled quantum memristors. We consider quantum memristors based on superconducting asymmetric SQUID architectures which are coupled via inductors. The three quantum memristors are arranged in two different geometries: linear and triangular coupling configurations. We obtain a variety of correlation measures, including bipartite entanglement and tripartite negativity. We find that, for identical quantum memristors, entanglement and memristivity follow the same behavior for the triangular case and the opposite one in the linear case. …
A Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) inserted in a superconducting waveguide resonator imposes current and voltage boundary conditions that makes it suitable as a tuning element for the resonator modes. If such a SQUID element is subject to a periodically varying magnetic flux, the resonator modes acquire frequency side bands. In this work we calculate the multi-frequency eigenmodes of resonators coupled to periodically driven SQUIDs and we use the Lagrange formalism to propose a theory for their quantization. The elementary excitations of a multi-frequency mode can couple res…
The information content of the two-particle one- and two-dimensional Calogero model is studied using the von Neumann and Rényi entropies. The one-dimensional model is shown to have non-monotonic entropies with finite values in the large interaction strength limit. On the other hand, the von Neumann entropy of the two-dimensional model with isotropic confinement is a monotone increasing function of the interaction strength which diverges logarithmically. By considering an anisotropic confinement in the two-dimensional case we show that the one-dimensional behavior is eventually reached when the…
Entanglement spectrum of finite-size correlated electron systems are investigated using the Gutzwiller projection technique. The product of largest eigenvalue and rank of the block reduced density matrix, which is a measure of distance of the state from the maximally entangled state of the corresponding rank, is seen to characterise the insulator to metal crossover in the state. The fraction of distinct eigenvalues exhibits a `chaotic' behaviour in the crossover region, and it shows a `integrable' behaviour at both insulating and metallic ends. The integrated entanglement spectrum obeys confor…
With increasing subsystem size and energy, bipartite entanglement entropies of energy eigenstates cross over from the groundstate scaling to a volume law. In previous work, we pointed out that, when strong or weak eigenstate thermalization (ETH) applies, the entanglement entropies of all or, respectively, almost all eigenstates follow a single crossover function. The crossover functions are determined by the subsystem entropy of thermal states and assume universal scaling forms in quantum-critical regimes. This was demonstrated by field-theoretical arguments and the analysis of large systems o…
Tensor networks are a powerful tool for many-body ground states with limited entanglement. These methods can nonetheless fail for certain time-dependent processes - such as quantum transport or quenches - where entanglement growth is linear in time. Matrix-product-state decompositions of the resulting out-of-equilibrium states require a bond dimension that grows exponentially, imposing a hard limit on simulation timescales. However, in the case of transport, if the reservoir modes of a closed system are arranged according to their scattering structure, the entanglement growth can be made logar…

A new numerical approach to entanglement entropies of the Renyi type is proposed for one-dimensional quantum field theories. The method extends the truncated conformal spectrum approach and we will demonstrate that it is especially suited to study the crossover from massless to massive behavior when the subsystem size is comparable to the correlation length. We apply it to different deformations of massless free fermions, corresponding to the scaling limit of the Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields. For massive free fermions the exactly known crossover function is reproduced alre…
