The problem of fermions in the presence of a pseudoscalar plus a mixing of vector and scalar potentials which have equal or opposite signs is investigated. We explore all the possible signs of the potentials and discuss their bound-state solutions for fermions and antifermions. The cases of mixed vector and scalar Pöschl-Teller-like and pseudoscalar kink-like potentials, already analyzed in previous works, are obtained as particular cases.
The problem of confinement of neutral fermions in two-dimensional space-time is approached with a pseudoscalar double-step potential in the Dirac equation. Bound-state solutions are obtained when the coupling is of sufficient intensity. The confinement is made plausible by arguments based on effective mass and anomalous magnetic interaction.
The problem of scattering of neutral fermions in two-dimensional space-time is approached with a pseudoscalar potential step in the Dirac equation. Some unexpected aspects of the solutions beyond the absence of Klein\'{}s paradox are presented. An apparent paradox concerning the uncertainty principle is solved by introducing the concept of effective Compton wavelength. Added plausibility for the existence of bound-state solutions in a pseudoscalar double-step potential found in a recent Letter is given.
The general Dirac equation in 1+1 dimensions with a potential with a completely general Lorentz structure is studied. Considering mixed vector-scalar-pseudoscalar square potentials, the states of relativistic fermions are investigated. This relativistic problem can be mapped into a effective Schrödinger equation for a square potential with repulsive and attractive delta-functions situated at the borders. An oscillatory transmission coefficient is found and resonant state energies are obtained. In a special case, the same bound energy spectrum for spinless particles is obtained, confirming the …
A systematic derivation is given of the worldline path integrals for the effective action of a multiplet of Dirac fermions interacting with general matrix-valued classical background scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector gauge fields. The first path integral involves worldline fermions with antiperiodic boundary conditions on the worldline loop and generates the real part of the one loop (Euclidean) effective action. The second path integral involves worldline fermions with periodic boundary conditions and generates the imaginary part of the (Euclidean) effective action, i.e. the phase of the fermi…
The problem of a fermion subject to a general mixing of vector and scalar screened Coulomb potentials in a two-dimensional world is analyzed and quantization conditions are found.
The problem of neutral fermions subject to a pseudoscalar potential is investigated. Apart from the solutions for $E=\pm mc^{2}$, the problem is mapped into the Sturm-Liouville equation. The case of a singular trigonometric tangent potential ($\sim \mathrm{tan} γx$) is exactly solved and the complete set of solutions is discussed in some detail. It is revealed that this intrinsically relativistic and true confining potential is able to localize fermions into a region of space arbitrarily small without the menace of particle-antiparticle production.
A frame-like action for massless mixed-symmetry fermionic fields in Minkowski space is constructed. The action is uniquely determined by gauge invariance.
The large-$N_c$ orientifold planar equivalence between $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory and ordinary 1-flavor QCD suggests that low-energy quark-gluon dynamics in QCD should be constrained by the supersymmetry of the parent theory. One SUSY relic expected from orientifold equivalence is the approximate degeneracy of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in 1-flavor QCD. Here we study the role of the $q\bar{q}$ annihilation (hairpin) contributions to the meson correlators. These annihilation terms induce mass shifts of opposite sign in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels, making degeneracy …
We explicitly construct the four and two fermion zero modes for the mixed-flux generalization of the Hofman-Maldacena giant magnon on two of the AdS$_3$ backgrounds with maximal amount of supersymmetry, AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$T$^4$ and AdS$_3 \times$S$^3 \times$S$^3 \times$S$^1$. We also show how to get the $\mathfrak{psu}(1|1)^4$ and $\mathfrak{su}(1|1)^2$ superalgebras from the semiclassically quantized fermion zero modes.
In this paper we compute the Casimir energy for a coupled fermion-pseudoscalar field system. In the model considered in this paper the pseudoscalar field is \textit{static} and \textit{prescribed} with two adjustable parameters. These parameters determine the values of the field at infinity ($\pm θ_0$) and its scale of variation ($μ$). One can build up a field configuration with arbitrary topological charge by changing $θ_0$, and interpolate between the extreme adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes by changing $μ$. This system is exactly solvable and therefore we compute the Casimir energy exact…
We study fermions derivatively coupled to axion-like or pseudoscalar fields, and show that the axial vector current of the fermions is not conserved in the limit where the fermion is massless. This apparent violation of the classical chiral symmetry is due to the background axion field. We compute the contributions to this anomalous Ward identity due to the pseudoscalar field alone, which arise in Minkowski space, as well as the effects due to an interaction with an external gravitational field. For the case of massless fermions, these interactions induce terms in the axion effective action th…
In this paper we consider frame-like formulation for mixed symmetry spin-tensors corresponding to arbitrary Young tableau with two rows. First of all, we extend Skvortsov formulation for massless mixed symmetry bosonic fields in flat Minkowski space to the case of massless fermionic fields. Then, using such massless fields as building blocks, we construct gauge invariant formulation for massive spin-tensors with the same symmetry properties. We give general massive theories in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary cosmological constant and investigate all possible massless and partially massless limits.
The problem of confinement of fermions in 1+1 dimensions is approached with a linear potential in the Dirac equation by considering a mixing of Lorentz vector and scalar couplings. Analytical bound-states solutions are obtained when the scalar coupling is of sufficient intensity compared to the vector coupling.
We report a quark spin calculation from the anomalous Ward identity with overlap fermions on 2+1 flavor dynamical fermion configurations with light sea quark masses. Such a formulation decomposes the divergence of the flavor-singlet axial-vector current into a quark pseudoscalar term and a triangle anomaly term, flavor by flavor. A large negative contribution from the anomaly term is observed and it is canceled within errors by the contribution from the pseudoscalar term in the disconnected insertion in the heavy quark region. On the other hand, net negative contributions are obtained for the …
The problem of fermions in 1+1 dimensions in the presence of a pseudoscalar Coulomb potential plus a mixing of vector and scalar Coulomb potentials which have equal or opposite signs is investigated. We explore all the possible signs of the potentials and discuss their bound-state solutions for fermions and antifermions. We show the relation between spin and pseudospin symmetries by means of charge-conjugation and $γ^{5}$ chiral transformations. The cases of pure pseudoscalar and mixed vector-scalar potentials, already analyzed in previous works, are obtained as particular cases. The results p…
We derive a worldline path integral representation for the effective action of a multiplet of Dirac fermions coupled to the most general set of matrix-valued scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial vector and antisymmetric tensor background fields. By representing internal degrees of freedom in terms of worldline fermions as well, we obtain a formulation which manifestly exhibits chiral gauge invariance.
It is shown that supersymmetric integrable models in two dimensions, both relativistic (i.e. super-Toda type theories) and non-relativistic (reductions of super-KP hierarchies) can be associated to general Poisson-brackets structures given by superaffinizations of any bosonic Lie or any super-Lie algebra. This result allows enlarging the set of supersymmetric integrable models, which are no longer restricted to the subclass of superaffinizations of purely fermionic super-Lie algebras (that is admitting fermionic simple roots only).
We study an extension of QED involving a light pseudoscalar (an axion-like particle), together with a very massive fermion which has Lorentz-violating interactions with the photon and the pseudoscalar, including a nonminimal Lorentz-violating coupling. We investigate the low energy effective action for this model, after integration over the fermion field, and show that interesting results are obtained, such as the generation of a correction to the standard coupling between the axion-like particle and the photon, as well as Lorentz-violating effects in the interaction energy involving electroma…
We consider a fermion chirally coupled to a prescribed pseudoscalar field in the form of the soliton of the sine-Gordon model and calculate and investigate the Casimir energy and all of the relevant quantities for each parity channel, separately. We present and use a simple prescription to construct the simultaneous eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and parity in the continua from the scattering states. We also use a prescription we had introduced earlier to calculate unique expressions for the phase shifts and check their consistency with both the weak and strong forms of the Levinson theorem. I…
With the help of the functional integration method, the formation of scalar, pseudoscalar condensates, and dynamical symmetry breaking in the U(3) four-fermion model has been investigated. We show the possibility of spontaneous CP symmetry violation in the model under consideration. The bosonization procedures of the model are performed; the propagators of quarks, scalar and pseudoscalar fields are calculated in one loop approximation. The masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons are evaluated.
In the Light-Front Dynamics, the wave function equations and their numerical solutions, for two fermion bound systems, are presented. Analytical expressions for the ladder one-boson exchange interaction kernels corresponding to scalar, pseudoscalar, pseudovector and vector exchanges are given. Different couplings are analyzed separately and each of them is found to exhibit special features. The results are compared with the non relativistic solutions.
