We suggest a novel extension to the Kaluza-Klein scheme that allows us to obtain consistently all SU(n) Einstein-Yang-Mills theories. This construction is based on allowing the five-dimensional spacetime to carry some non-vanishing torsion; however, the four-dimensional spacetime remains intrinsically torsion-free.
We investigate a special class of Poisson--Lie T-plurality transformations of Bianchi cosmologies invariant with respect to non-semisimple Bianchi groups. For six-dimensional semi-Abelian Manin triples $\mathfrak{b}\bowtie \mathfrak{a}$ containing Bianchi algebras $\mathfrak{b}$ we identify general forms of Poisson--Lie identities and dualities. We show that these can be decomposed into simple factors, namely automorphisms of Manin triples, B-shifts, $β$-shifts, and "full" or "factorized" dualities. Further, we study effects of these transformations and utilize the decompositions to obtain new…
A Palatini-type action for Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity with non-trivial torsion is proposed. Three-form flux is incorporated via a deformation of the Riemann tensor, and consistency of the Palatini variational principle requires the flux to be covariantly constant and to satisfy a Jacobi identity. Studying gravity actions of third order in the curvature leads to a conjecture about general Palatini-Lovelock-Cartan gravity. We point out potential relations to string-theoretic Bianchi identities and, using the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket, derive a set of Bianchi identities for the non-geomet…
Theories of $f(T)$ gravity are being actively confronted with cosmological observations, and are being studied for their potential to solve famous problems of cosmology. A necessary step is to extend these studies to astrophysical settings. However, to this end one must understand the structure of spherically symmetric solutions. We show that two different known approaches to these solutions are actually fully equivalent from the point of view of Lorentz-covariant formalism. Moreover, we explain Bianchi identities in $f(T)$ gravity and apply them to show that the corresponding equations are al…
Through a constructive method it is shown that the claim advanced in recent times about a clash that should occur between the Freud and the Bianchi identities in Einstein's general theory of relativity is based on a faulty argument.
A higher dimensional frame formalism is developed in order to study implications of the Bianchi identities for the Weyl tensor in vacuum spacetimes of the algebraic types III and N in arbitrary dimension $n$. It follows that the principal null congruence is geodesic and expands isotropically in two dimensions and does not expand in $n-4$ spacelike dimensions or does not expand at all. It is shown that the existence of such principal geodesic null congruence in vacuum (together with an additional condition on twist) implies an algebraically special spacetime. We also use the Myers-Perry metric …
The purpose of this paper is to revisit the Bianchi identities existing for the Riemann and Weyl tensors in the combined framework of the formal theory of systems of partial differential equations (Spencer cohomology, differential systems, formal integrability) and Algebraic Analysis (homological algebra, differential modules, duality). In particular, we prove that the n 2 (n 2 -- 1)(n -- 2)/24 generating Bianchi identities for the Riemann tensor are first order and can be easily described by means of the Spencer cohomology of the first order Killing symbol in arbitrary dimension n $\ge$ 2. Si…
We investigate the Bianchi I cosmology with the homogeneous SU(2) Yang-Mills field governed by the non-Abelian Born-Infeld action. Similar system with the standard Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) action is known to exhibit chaotic behavior induced by the Yang-Mills field. When the action is replaced by the Born-Infeld-type non-Abelian action (NBI), the chaos-order transition is observed in the high energy region. This is interpreted as a smothering effect due to (non-perturbative in $alpha'$) string corrections to the classical EYM action. We give a numerical evidence for the chaos-order transition,…
Studying Yang-Mills field and gravitational field in class A Bianchi spacetimes, we find that chaotic behavior appears in the late phase (the asymptotic future). In this phase, the Yang-Mills field behaves as that in Minkowski spacetime, in which we can understand it by a potential picture, except for the types VIII and IX. At the same time, in the initial phase (near the initial singularity), we numerically find that the behavior seems to approach the Kasner solution. However, we show that the Kasner circle is unstable and the Kasner solution is not an attractor. From an analysis of stability…
We construct the most general form of axially symmetric SU(2)-Yang-Mills fields in Bianchi cosmologies. The dynamical evolution of axially symmetric YM fields in Bianchi I model is compared with the dynamical evolution of the electromagnetic field in Bianchi I and the fully isotropic YM field in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies. The stochastic properties of axially symmetric Bianchi I-Einstein-Yang-Mills systems are compared with those of axially symmetric YM fields in flat space. After numerical computation of Liapunov exponents in synchronous (cosmological) time, it is shown that the B…
We discuss some physical prospective of the non-BPS effective actions of type IIA and IIB superstring theories. By dealing with the complete all three and four point functions, including a closed string Ramond-Ramond (in terms of both its field strength and its potential), gauge (scalar) fields as well as a real tachyon and under symmetry structures, we find various restricted world volume and bulk Bianchi identities. The complete forms of the non-BPS scattering amplitudes including their Chan-Paton factors are elaborated. All the singularity structures of the non-BPS amplitudes, their all ord…
By employing the Bianchi identities for the Riemann tensor in conjunction with the Einstein equations, we construct a first order symmetric hyperbolic system for the evolution part of the Cauchy problem of general relativity. In this system, the metric evolves at zero speed with respect to observers at rest in a foliation of spacetime by spacelike hypersurfaces while the curvature and connection propagate at the speed of light. The system has no unphysical characteristics, and matter sources can be included.
We present the exact equation for evolution of Bianchi I cosmological model, considering a non-tilted perfect fluid in a matter dominated universe. We use the definition of shear tensor and later we prove it is consistent with the evolution equation for shear tensor obtained from Ricci identities and widely known in literature [3], [5], [9]. Our result is compared with the equation given by Ellis and van Elst in [3] and Tsagas, Challinor and Maartens [5]. We consider that it is important to clarify the notation used in [3], [5] related with the covariant derivative and the behavior of the shea…
The dynamics of general relativity is encoded in a set of ten differential equations, the so-called Einstein field equations. It is usually believed that Einstein's equations represent a physical law describing the coupling of spacetime with material fields. However, just six of these equations actually describe the coupling mechanism: the remaining four represent a set of differential relations known as Bianchi identities. The paper discusses the physical role that the Bianchi identities play in general relativity, and investigates whether these identities -- qua part of a physical law -- hig…
We present a gauge theory of the conformal group in four spacetime dimensions with a non-vanishing torsion. In particular, we allow for a completely antisymmetric torsion, equivalent by Hodge duality to an axial vector whose presence does not spoil the conformal invariance of the theory, in contrast with claims of antecedent literature. The requirement of conformal invariance implies a differential condition (in particular, a Killing equation) on the aforementioned axial vector which leads to a Maxwell-like equation in a four-dimensional curved background. We also give some preliminary results…
We derive and calculate the space-time translational gauge identities in quantum Yang-Mills gravity with a general class of gauge conditions involving two arbitrary parameters. These identities of the Abelian group of translation are a generalization of Ward-Takahasi-Fradkin identities and important for general discussions of possible renormalization of Yang-Mills gravity with translational gauge symmetry. The gauge identities in Yang-Mills gravity with a general class of gauge conditions are substantiated by explicit calculations.
The importance of Einstein's geometrization philosophy, as an alternative to the least action principle, in constructing general relativity (GR), is illuminated. The role of differential identities in this philosophy is clarified. The use of Bianchi identity to write the field equations of GR is shown. Another similar identity in the absolute parallelism geometry is given. A more general differential identity in the parameterized absolute parallelism geometry is derived. Comparison and interrelationships between the above mentioned identities and their role in constructing field theories are d…
Torsions, curvatures, structure equations and Bianchi identities for locally anisotropic superspaces (containing as particular cases different supersymmetric extensions and prolongations of Riemann, Finsler, Lagrange and Kaluza--Klein spaces) are investigated.
The field equations in the nonsymmetric gravitational theory are derived from a Lagrangian density using a first-order formalism. Using the general covariance of the Lagrangian density, conservation laws and tensor identities are derived. Among these are the generalized Bianchi identities and the law of energy-momentum conservation. The Lagrangian density is expanded to second-order, and treated as an ``Einstein plus fields'' theory. From this, it is deduced that the energy is positive in the radiation zone.
The Standard-Model Extension (SME) is the general phenomenological framework used to investigate Lorentz violation at the level of effective field theory. It has been used to obtain stringent experimental bounds on Lorentz violation in a wide range of tests. In the gravity sector of the SME, it is typically assumed that the spacetime symmetry breaking occurs spontaneously in order to avoid potential conflicts with the Bianchi identities. A post-Newtonian limit as well as matter-gravity couplings in the SME have been developed and investigated based on this assumption. In this paper, the possib…
Bianchi-IX four metrics are $SU(2)$ invariant solutions of vacuum Einstein equation, for which the connection-wise self-dual case describes the Euler Top, while the curvature-wise self-dual case yields the Ricci flat classical Darboux-Halphen system. It is possible to see such a solution exhibiting Ricci flow. The classical Darboux-Halphen system is a special case of the generalized one that arises from a reduction of the self-dual Yang-Mills equation and the solutions to the related homogeneous quadratic differential equations provide the desired metric. A few integrable and near-integrable d…
Using the Newman and Penrose spin coefficient (NP) formalism, we examine the full Bianchi identities of general relativity in the context of gravitational lensing, where the matter and space-time curvature are projected into a lens plane perpendicular to the line of sight. From one component of the Bianchi identity, we provide a rigorous, new derivation of a Poisson equation for the projected matter density where the source term involves second derivatives of the observed weak gravitational lensing shear. We also show that the other components of the Bianchi identity reveal no new results. Num…
We review some well posed formulations of the evolution part of the Cauchy problem of General Relativity that we have recently obtained. We include also a new first order symmetric hyperbolic system based directly on the Riemann tensor and the full Bianchi identities. It has only physical characteristics and matter sources can be included. It is completely equivalent to our other system with these properties.
We explore some new off-shell and on-shell conserved quantities for a scalar field in Minkowski space, using integrability condition. The off-shell conserved tensors are related to the kinematics of the field, while a linear combination of the off-shell and the on-shell conserved tensors ends up with the energy-momentum tensor for the scalar field. In the curved background, using Ricci and Bianchi identities, Brans-Dicke type field equations emerge, without requiring the principle of equivalence. Further, starting from the curvature scalar and using these identities, the field equations for mo…
We carefully investigate the gravitational equations of the brane world, in which all the matter forces except gravity are confined on the 3-brane in a 5-dimensional spacetime with $Z_2$ symmetry. We derive the effective gravitational equations on the brane, which reduce to the conventional Einstein equations in the low energy limit. {}From our general argument we conclude that the first Randall & Sundrum-type theory (RS1) [hep-ph/9905221] predicts that the brane with the negative tension is an anti-gravity world and hence should be excluded from the physical point of view. Their second-type t…
