Glass-like arrest of kinetics has been observed across many magnetic first-order transitions. By traversing the two control variable H-T space, tunable coexisting fractions of arrested and equilibrium phases have been observed. We report here a fortuitous situation in a half-doped manganite sample, where these features occur by varying only temperature (T) along the H=0 line. The resistivity at 5 K rises by more than a factor of three provided second cool-down is effected from a specified intermediate T. This significant enhancement results from heterogeneous nucleation during second cool-down of regions that were kinetically arrested during first cool-down.
We have measured the spin-wave spectrum of the half-doped bilayer manganite Pr(Ca,Sr)2Mn2O7 in its spin, charge, and orbital ordered phase. The measurements, which extend throughout the Brillouin zone and cover the entire one-magnon spectrum, are compared critically with spin-wave calculations for different models of the electronic ground state. The data are described very well by the Goodenough model, which has weakly interacting ferromagnetic zig-zag chains in the CE-type arrangement. A model that allows ferromagnetic dimers to form within the zigzags is inconsistent with the data. The analy…
Theoretical and computational results are presented clarifying the role of long-ranged strain interactions in determining the charge and orbital ordering in colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The strain energy contribution is found to be of order 20-30 meV/Mn and in particular stabilizes the anomalous 'zig-zag chain' order observed in many half-doped manganites.
We report precise measurements and quantitative data analysis on the low-temperature resistivity of several ferromagnetic manganite films. We clearly show that there exists a T^{4.5} term in low-temperature resistivity, and that this term is in quantitative agreement with the quantum theory of two-magnon scattering for half metallic ferromagnets. Our present results provide the first bulk experimental evidence of half-metallic ferromagnetism in doped manganites.
We deduce a model relevant for the anomalous metallic state of Sr doped manganites at low temperatures within the ferromagnetic phase. It provides a natural explanation to several anomalous features observed experimentally, such as the vanishing Drude contribution in optical conductivity, the pseudo-gap in the density of states, an the unusual dispersion observed in photoemission.
The magnetic nature of the B-site dopants controls the magnetic phases in B-site doped manganites RE$_{1-x}$AE$_{x}$Mn$_{1-η}$B$_η$O$_3$. Different B-site dopants of equal valence, doped into the same reference manganite, lead to different magnetic phases at low temperature, which can not be explained using the valence change scenario. We focus on trivalent B-site dopants in CE-CO-OO-I manganites at half-filling $x=0.50$ to study the role of magnetic interactions between the B-site dopants and the neighboring Mn-sites by using a two-orbital double-exchange model including super-exchange intera…
We introduce a general model for understanding the effect of quenched disorder on charge ordering in half-doped Manganese- and Cobalt-Oxides with different crystal structures. Current experimental results (Table-1) are discussed in light of the global phase diagram of the model (Fig. 2).
We report on the influence of the lattice degrees of freedom on charge, orbital and spin correlations in colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites. For the weakly doped compounds we demonstrate that the electron-phonon coupling promotes the trapping of charge carriers, the disappearance of the orbital polaron pattern and the breakdown of ferromagnetism at the CMR transition. The role of different superexchange interactions is explored.
Novel ground-state spin structures in undoped and lightly-doped manganites are here investigated based on the orbital-degenerate double-exchange model, by using mean-field and numerical techniques. In undoped manganites, a new antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, called the E-type phase, is found adjacent in parameter space to the A-type AFM phase. Its structure is in agreement with recent experimental results. This insulating E-AFM state is also competing with a ferromagnetic metallic phase as well, suggesting that large magneto-resistant effects could exist even in undoped Mn oxides. For doped lay…
We have verified that the variational mean field theory approach suggested by Narimanov and Varma (preprint cond-mat/0002191) being applied to the realistic two-band model provides a good agreement with experimental data for the Curie temperature in doped manganites A$_{1-x}$B$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x\simeq{0.3}$). We have also considered the problem of an interplay between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions by using the same approach.
The observation of unusually large ferromagnetism in the nanoparticles of doped oxides and enhanced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganite nanoparticles have been in focus recently. For the transition metal-doped oxide nanoparticles a phenomenological `charge transfer ferromagnetism' model is recently proposed by Coey et al. From a microscopic calculation with charge transfer between the defect band and mixed valent dopants, acting as reservoir, we show how the unusually high ferromagnetic response develops. The puzzle of nanosize-induced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganites is also addressed…
The coupling of multiple degrees of freedom - charge, spin, and lattice - in manganites has mostly been considered at the microscopic level. However, on larger length scales, these correlations may be affected by strain and disorder, which can lead to short range order in these phases and affect the coupling between them. To better understand these effects, we explore the dynamics of orbitally ordered domains in a half-doped manganite near the orbital ordering phase transition. Our results suggest that the domains are largely static, and exhibit only slow fluctuations near domain boundaries.
The role of lattice distortion in the charge, orbital and spin ordering in half doped manganites has been investigated. For fixed magnetic ordering, we show that the cooperative lattice distortion stabilize the experimentally observed ordering even when the strong on-site electronic correlation is taken into account. Furthermore, without invoking the magnetic interactions, the cooperative lattice distortion alone may lead to the correct charge and orbital ordering including the charge stacking effect, and the magnetic ordering can be the consequence of such a charge and orbital ordering. We pr…
Colossal magneto-resistance manganites are characterised by a complex interplay of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Formulating microscopic models for these compounds aims at meeting to conflicting objectives: sufficient simplification without excessive restrictions on the phase space. We give a detailed introduction to the electronic structure of manganites and derive a microscopic model for their low energy physics. Focussing on short range electron-lattice and spin-orbital correlations we supplement the modelling with numerical simulations.
We analyze effective Hamiltonian of ferromagnetic half metal phase of doped manganites and find a latent d-wave spin triplet superconductivity. Spin triplet state for a d-wave pair is enabled by orbital degrees of freedom. This high Tc superconductivity is, however, kept dormant by some intrinsic strong cooper pair breaking processes. Low T anomalies such as i) long distance superconducting proximity effects into manganites, ii) pseudogaps in tunneling, ARPES and iii) nodal quasi particles and absence of bilayer splitting in ARPES in bilayer manganite get natural and qualitative explanation. S…
We report the magnetotransport characteristics of a trilayer ferromagnetic tunnel junction build of an electron doped manganite (La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3) and a hole doped manganite (La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3). At low temperatures the junction exhibits a large positive tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), irrespective of the bias voltage. At intermediate temperatures below T_C the sign of the TMR is dependent on the bias voltage across the junction. The magnetoresistive characteristics of the junction strongly suggest that La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 is a minority spin carrier ferromagnet with a high degree of spin pola…
Results of LSDA and LSDA+U calculations of the electronic structure and magnetic configurations of the 50% hole-doped pseudocubic perovskite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 and double layered LaSr2Mn2O7 are presented. We demonstrate that the on-site Coulomb correlation (U) of Mn d electrons has a very different influence on the (i) band formations, (ii) magnetic ground states, (iii) interlayer exchange interactions, and (iv) anisotropy of the electrical transport in these two manganites. A possible reason why the LSDA failures in predicting observed magnetic and transport properties of the double layered compo…
The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode. The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best…
The magnetic phase diagram of the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites is determined based on the Hamiltonian incorporating the double-exchange (DE) interaction between degenerate Mn $e_g$ orbitals and the antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange interaction between Mn $t_{2g}$ spins. We have employed the rigorous quantum mechanical formalism and obtained the finite temperature phase diagram which describes well the commonly observed features in CMR manganites. We have also shown that the CE-type AF structure cannot be stabilized at $x$=0.5 in this model.
We present the effective lagrangian for low energy and momentum spin waves in canted phases at next to leading order in the derivative expansion. The symmetry breaking pattern SU(2) --> 1 of the internal spin group and that of the crystallographic space group imply that there is one ferromagnetic and one antiferromagnetic spin wave. The interaction of the spin waves with the charge carriers is also discussed for canted, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. All this together allows us to write the doping dependence of the dispersion relation parameters for doped manganites. We point out …
The low-temperature spin dynamics of doped manganites have been analyzed within a tight-binding model, the parameters of which are estimated by mapping the results of ab initio density functional calculations onto the model. This approach is found to provide a good description of the spin dynamics of the doped manganites, observed earlier within the ab initio calculations. Our analysis not only provides some insight into the roles of the eg and the t2g states but also indicates that the oxygen p states play an important role in the spin dynamics. This may cast doubt on the adaptability of the …
We analyze the effects of both bond- and potential-disorder in the vicinity of a first-order metal insulator transition in a two-band model for manganites using a real-space Monte Carlo method. Our results reveal a novel charge-ordered state coexisting with spin-glass behavior. We provide the basis for understanding the phase diagrams of half-doped manganites, and contrast the effects of bond- and potential-disorder and the combination of both.
Computational studies show the generation of large coexisting metallic and insulating clusters with equal electronic density in models for manganites. The clusters are induced by disorder on exchange and hopping amplitudes near first-order transitions of the non-disordered strongly coupled system. The random-field Ising model is used to explain the qualitative aspects of our results. Percolative characteristics are natural in this context. Our results explain the recently experimentally discovered micrometer size inhomogeneities in manganites. The conclusions are general and apply to a variety…
We investigate magnetic excitations in half-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganites. In particular, we focus on spin excitations in the CE phase originally proposed by Goodenough (Phys. Rev. 100, 564 (1955)). Using a localized spin model we calculated magnons for 3D-perovskite compounds such as La$_{1-x}$M$_x$MnO$_3$, where M=Ca,Sr,Ba, and for their 2D-laminar counterparts. We compared them with predictions for the spin excitations corresponding to other phases proposed. For the laminar half-doped manganite La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, for which magnon measurements by inelastic neutron sca…
By calculating the electronic, orbital, magnetic and lattice structure of half-doped manganites we establish the central role of oxygen buckling caused by the tilting of the MnO$_6$ octahedra -- in essence a steric effect. The buckling itself does not change the Mn-Mn bonds. Instead it drives the system towards an instability where these bonds can dimerize. In presence of electron-electron interactions, this instability can fully develop and beyond a critical buckling a Zener polaron groundstate with dimerized spins, lattice and orbitals forms spontaneously, resulting in a multiferroic state.
The effect of resistive switching in doped manganites being in the ferromagnetic state has been studied using resistive and magneto-optic methods. The visualization of magnetic structure of La0.75Sr0.25MnO3-x single crystals, and its transformation under electric current proposed local superheating of the material above the Curie temperature, which was supported by numerical calculation. The obtained results suggest a significant role of micrometer-scale inhomogeneity of manganites in phase separation, magnetic and transport properties of the material.
In his Comment (cond-mat/0104353), Shen points out that the on-site Coulomb interaction, that can cause charge order in half-doped manganites, also destabilizes the magnetic CE-phase observed in these systems. This is a valid observation, but it is not a priori clear whether in the relevant parameter regime the C-phase is indeed lower in energy then the CE-phase within our model. We conclude that the proposed model, which correctly captures the interplay of spin, charge and orbital degrees of freedom in the half-doped manganites and gives a reasonable description of their electronic structure,…
We have analyzed the coexisting charge and orbital ordering in half-doped manganites using a model which includes Coulomb and Jahn-Teller orbital polarization interactions. Most surprisingly, the gap in the optical conductivity is reduced by both on-site and intersite Coulomb interactions, but increases and explains the experimental results when the Jahn-Teller terms with orbital polarization are considered. The origin of this behavior is explained within a molecular model which arises in the limit of extreme topological frustration, when single electrons are confined to molecular units consis…
Considering the disorder caused in manganites by the substitution of Mn by Fe or Ga, we accomplish a systematic study of doped manganites begun in previous papers. To this end, a disordered model is formulated and solved using the Variational Mean Field technique. The subtle interplay between double exchange, super-exchange, and disorder causes similar effects on the dependence of T_C on the percentage of Mn substitution in the cases considered. Yet, in La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$Mn$_{1-y}$Ga$_y$O$_3$ our results suggest a quantum critical point (QCP) for $y\approx 0.1-0.2$, associated to the localiz…
We study the anisotropic magnetic structures exhibited by electron-doped manganites using a model which incorporates the double-exchange between orbital ly degenerate $e_{g}$ electrons and the super-exchange between $t_{2g}$ electrons with realistic values of the Hund's coupling($J_H$), the super-exchange coupling($J_{AF}$), and the bandwidth($W$). We look at the relative stabilities of the G, C and A type antiferromagnetic ph ases. In particular we find that the G-phase is stable for low electron doping as seen in experiments. We find good agreement with the experimentally observed magnetic p…
The persistent proximity of insulating and metallic phases, a puzzling characterestic of manganites, is argued to arise from the self organization of the twofold degenerate e_g orbitals of Mn into localized Jahn-Teller(JT) polaronic levels and broad band states due to the large electron - JT phonon coupling present in them. We describe a new two band model with strong correlations and a dynamical mean-field theory calculation of equilibrium and transport properties. These explain the insulator metal transition and colossal magnetoresistance quantitatively, as well as other consequences of two …
From a Monte Carlo study of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model for doped manganites, including the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction ($J_{AF}$), we found that the ferromagnetic ordering was suppressed as $J_{AF}$ increased. The ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_c$, as obtained from a mean field fit to the calculated susceptibilities, was found to decrease monotonically with increasing $J_{AF}$. Further, the suppression in $T_c$ scales with the bandwidth narrowing induced by the antiferromagnetic frustration originating from $J_{AF}$. From these results, we propose that the c…
The order parameters of the magnetic, charge and structural orders at half-doped manganites are identified. A corresponding Landau theory of the phase transitions is formulated. Many structural and thermodynamical behaviors are accounted for and clarified within the framework. In particular, the theory provides a unified picture for the scenario of the phase transitions and their nature with respect to the variation of the tolerance factor of the manganites. It also accounts for the origin of the incommensurate nature of the orbital order and its subsequently accompanying antiferromagnetic ord…
We show that strong non--linear electron transport in the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state of manganites, responsible for phenomena such as colossal electroresistance and current induced resistance switching, can occur due to a hot electron effect. In the FMI state, which we show is an insulator with a Coulomb gap, the temperature of the electron and lattice baths can decouple at high input power levels, leading to heating of the electron bath. Parameters of the hot electron effect model were independently determined via time dependence experiments and are in good agreement with the experi…
We report a 139La NMR investigation of low-doped insulating manganite samples (LaMnO(3+y) and La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3+y)) as a function of temperature. A volume fraction with fast nuclear relaxations was revealed by the inhomogeneous loss of the NMR signal over a broad temperature interval. Comparison with muSR data demonstrates that the wipe out of the 139La signal is mainly due to slowly fluctuating electric field gradients. This provides strong evidence for the slow diffusion of lattice excitations, identified with Jahn-Teller small polarons.
The two-orbital model for manganites with both non-cooperative and cooperative Jahn-Teller phonons is studied at hole density x=0.5 using Monte Carlo techniques. The phase diagram is obtained varying the electron-phonon coupling and the $\rm t_{2g}$-spins exchange. The insulating CE-type charge- and orbital-ordered state with the $z$-axis charge $stacking$ observed in narrow-bandwidth manganites is stabilized in the simulations. Its charge gap $Δ_{\rm CO}$ is much larger than the critical temperature $\rm k_B T_{CO}$. Metallic-like A-type and ferromagnetic states are also obtained in the same …
The electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and thermopower as functions of temperature are reported for lightly electron-doped Ca(1-x)La(x)MnO(3)(0 <= x <= 0.10). Unlike the case of hole-doped ferromagnetic manganites, the magnitude and temperature dependence of the Hall mobility for these compounds is found to be inconsistent with small-polaron theory. The transport data are better described by the Feynman polaron theory and imply intermediate coupling (alpha \~ 5.4) with a band effective mass, m*~4.3 m_0, and a polaron mass, m_p ~ 10 m_0.
The phase diagram of quarter-hole-doped perovskite manganites is investigated using the doubleexchange model. An exotic striped type-II multiferroic phase, where 25% of the nearest-neighbor spin couplings are orthogonal to each other, is found in the narrow-bandwidth region. Comparing with the spiral-spin ordering phase of undoped manganites, the multiferroic Curie temperature of the new phase is estimated to be ~4 times higher, while the ferroelectric polarization is similar in magnitude. Our study provides a path for noncollinear spin multiferroics based on electronic self-organization, diff…
The coexistence of ferromagnetism and metallic conduction in doped manganites has long been explained by a double-exchange model in which the ferromagnetic exchange arises from the carrier hopping. We evaluate the zero-temperature spin stiffness D(0) and the Curie temperature T_{C} on the basis of the double-exchange model using the measured values of the bare bandwidth W and the Hund's rule coupling J_{H}. The calculated D(0) and T_{C} values are too small compared with the observed ones even in the absence of interactions. A realistic onsite interorbital Coulomb repulsion can reduce D(0) sub…
We introduce a microscopic model for electron doped manganites that explains the mechanism of the observed transition from $G$-type antiferromagnetic ($G$-AF) to $C$-type antiferromagnetic ($C$-AF) order under increasing doping by double exchange mechanism. The model unravels the crucial role played by $e_g$ orbital degrees of freedom and explains the observed metal-to-insulator transition by a dimensional crossover at the magnetic phase transition. The specific heat and the spin canting angle found for the $G$-AF phase agree with the experimental findings. As a surprising outcome of the theor…
We report on the in-plane anisotropy of the electronic response in the spin/charge/orbital ordered phase of a half-doped layered-structure manganite. The optical conductivity spectra for a single domain of Eu$_{1/2}$% Ca$_{3/2}$MnO$_{4}$ unambiguously show the anisotropic charge dynamics which well corresponds to the theoretical calculation: the optical conductivity with the polarization along the zigzag ferromagnetic chain direction exhibits a smaller gap and a larger intensity at lower energies than that of the perpendicular polarization mostly due to the charge/orbital ordering and the asso…
We report inelastic neutron scattering results on the spin dynamics in the 50 % hole-doped manganites, Pr{1/2}Sr{1/2}MnO3 and Nd{1/2}Sr{1/2}MnO3. In the paramagnetic phase, these systems exhibit a ridge-type diffuse scattering, indicating a two-dimensional ferromagnetic (FM) correlation. With decreasing temperature, the systems enter the FM state, but simultaneously they develop A-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The spin wave dispersion in the FM state is strongly anisotropic. These behaviors can be consistently interpreted from a viewpoint of the underlying orbital ordering.
The nature of the polarons in the optimally doped colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) materials La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 (LBMO) and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) is studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. In both materials, dynamic nanoscale polaron correlations develop abruptly in the ferromagnetic state. However, the polarons are not able to lock-in to the lattice and order, in contrast to the behavior of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3. Therefore ferromagnetic order in LBMO and LSMO survives their formation, explaining the conventional second order nature of the ferromagnetic--paramagnetic transition. Nevertheless, …
The electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic doped manganites are investigated by means of model tight-binding and \textit{ab initio} self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation calculations. It is found that the surface alone by breaking the cubic symmetry induces a difference in the occupation of the two $e_{g}$ orbitals at the surface. With \textit{ab initio} calculations we found surface localisation of one orbital and hence a change in the Mn valency from four in the bulk to three at the sub-surface. Different surface or disordered interface induced localisation…
We discuss our very interesting experimental observation that the low-temperature two-phase coexistence in half-doped manganites is multi-valued (at any field) in that we can tune the coexisting antiferromagnetic-insulating(AF-I) and the ferromagnetic-metallic(FM-M) phase-fractions by following different paths in (H,T) space. We have shown experimentally that the phase-fraction, in this two-phase coexistence, can take continuous infinity of values. All but one of these are metastable, and two-phase coexistence is not an equilibrium state.
We investigate a planar model for the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of manganites, which develops orbital order of $e_g$ electrons with x$^2$-y$^2$-symmetry at low temperature. The dynamic structure factor of orbital excitations and the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ are studied with help of a finite-temperature diagonalization method. Our calculations provide a theoretical prediction for $σ(ω)$ for the 2D FM state and are of possible relevance for the recently found A-type phase of manganites at high doping which consists of FM layers coupled antiferromagnetically. In the x$^2$-y$^2$ ordered regime $…
We study the transition at T=0 from a ferromagnetic insulating to a ferromagnetic metallic phase in manganites as a function of hole doping using an effective low-energy model Hamiltonian proposed by us recently. The model incorporates the quantum nature of the dynamic Jahn-Teller(JT) phonons strongly coupled to orbitally degenerate electrons as well as strong Coulomb correlation effects and leads naturally to the coexistence of localized (JT polaronic) and band-like electronic states. We study the insulator-metal transition as a function of doping as well as of the correlation strength U and …
We propose that a specific spatial configuration of lattice sites that energetically favor {\it 3+} or {\it 4+} Mn ions in moderately doped manganites constitutes approximately a spatially random two-energy-level system. Such an effect results in a mechanism of metal-insulator transitions that appears to be different from both the Anderson transition and the Mott-Hubbard transition. Correspondingly, a disordered Kondo lattice model is put forward, whose dynamical mean-field solution agrees reasonably with experiments.
The possibility to induce ferromagnetism and insulator to metal transitions in small A site cation manganites Ln_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 by rhodium doping is shown for the first time. Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties are evidenced for a large compositional range (0.35 \leq x < 0.60). The ability of rhodium to induce such properties is compared to the results obtained by chromium and ruthenium doping. Models are proposed to explain this behavior.
The phase diagram and low temperature properties of the doped manganites A1-xBxMnO3 are discussed for the concentrations x < 0.4. The transition from insulating antiferromagnetic to metallic ferromagnetic state at x_cr = 0.16 is treated by means of percolation theory. The unifying description of insulating and metallic states is presented. The undoped manganite is a band insulator consisting of ferromagnetic layers, which are coupled antiferromagnetically along the c direction with a low Neel temperature. The metallic phase can be described by the two-band Fermi liquid picture. The behavior of…
We use neutron scattering to study the spin and charge/orbital ordering (CO-OO) in the nearly half-doped perovskite manganite $Pr_{0.55}(Ca_{0.8}Sr_{0.2})_{0.45}MnO_3$ (PCSMO). On cooling from room temperature, PCSMO first enters into a CO-OO state below $T_{CO}$ and then becomes a CE-type long-range ordered antiferromagnet below $T_N$. At temperatures above $T_N$ but below $T_{CO}$ ($T_N<T<T_{CO}$), the spins in PCSMO form highly anisotropic smectic liquid-crystal-like texture with ferromagnetic (FM) quasi-long-range ordered one-dimensional zigzag chains weakly coupled antiferromagnetically. …
We present a study of the effect of biaxial strain on the electrical and magnetic properties of thin films of manganites. We observe that manganite films grown under biaxial compressive strain exhibit island growth morphology which leads to a non-uniform distribution of the strain. Transport and magnetic properties of these films suggest the coexistence of two different phases, a metallic ferromagnet and an insulating antiferromagnet. We suggest that the high strain regions are insulating while the low strain regions are metallic. In such non-uniformly strained samples, we observe a large magn…
We show that the current carrier density collapse in doped manganites, which results from bipolaron formation in the paramagnetic phase, leads to a colossal change of the optical conductivity in an external magnetic field at temperatures close to the ferromagnetic transition. As with the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) itself, the corresponding magnetooptical effect is explained by the dissociation of localized bipolarons into mobile polarons owing to the exchange interaction with the localized Mn spins in the ferromagnetic phase. The effect is positive at low frequencies and negative in the …
We investigate the stability of the charge exchange (CE) phase within a microscopic model which describes a single plane as in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$. The model includes Coulomb interactions (on-site and intersite), the Jahn-Teller term and the superexchange interactions due to $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ electrons. By investigating the phase diagram at T=0 in mean-field approximation we conclude that the superexchange interactions can stabilize the CE phase, but only if they are stronger than estimated from spectroscopy.
We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of Pr$_{0.65}$Ca$_{0.35}$MnO$_3$ and Pr$_{0.82}$Na$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$ with almost same doping level under various magnetic fields. Upon applying a field of 4 T, both compounds undergo a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) in the low temperature region. The field-induced FM state is very stable for at least 10$^5$ s even after removing the field. This irreversible FM behavior is different from the spontaneous FM ordering as well as the FM state in a reversible metamagnetic transition. We discuss this …
We show that specific heat C$_p$ has non-Debye behavior for glassy states in half-doped manganites. Irrespective of the magnetic order or electronic states, these magnetic glasses have higher C$_p$ compared to their equilibrium counterparts. The excess C$_p$ contributed by the glassy state varies linearly with temperature similar to conventional glasses indicating tunneling in the two-level systems. These glassy states show signature of zero point entropy. Magnetic glasses can be produced simply by different field cooling protocols and may be considered ideal magnetic counterpart of the conven…
We study the Holstein-Double Exchange model in three dimensions in the presence of substitutional disorder. Using a new Monte Carlo technique we establish the phase diagram of the clean model and then focus on the effect of varying electron-phonon coupling and disorder at fixed electron density. We demonstrate how extrinsic disorder controls the interplay of lattice polaron effects and spin fluctuations and leads to widely varying regimes in transport. Our results on the disorder dependence of the ferromagnetic T_c and metal-insulator transitions bear direct comparison to data on the `optimall…
We employ time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction to study the melting of charge order and the associated insulator-metal transition in the doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ after resonant excitation of a high-frequency infrared-active lattice mode. We find that the charge order reduces promptly and highly nonlinearly as function of excitation fluence. Density functional theory calculations suggest that direct anharmonic coupling between the excited lattice mode and the electronic structure drive these dynamics, highlighting a new avenue of nonlinear phonon control.
We observe an interesting scenario of field induced metastabilities in the resistivity measurements. The resistivity exhibits a bifurcation of zero-field cooled and field-cooled (FC) temperature dependence below the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition ($T_c$). The clear evidence of {\it inverse} thermal hysteresis of resistivity is observed under FC condition in between 85 and 200 K, indicating the first order phase transition at $T_c$. The additional observation of minor hysteresis loops confirms the phase coexistence. The interesting features in the dynamics of resistivity is observed a…
We show that an interplay of double exchange and impurity randomness can explain the competition between metal-ferromagnetic and insulating charge ordered states in doped manganites. The double exchange is simplified in the Ising type, whereas the randomness is modeled by the Falicov-Kimball binary distribution. The combined model is considered in a framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Using the Kubo-Greenwood formalism, the transport coefficients are explicitly expressed in terms of single particle spectral functions. Dividing the system into two sublattices we have pointed out a direct …
Recently, based on the refined crystal structure of Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 from neutron diffraction, Daoud-Aladine et al.[PRL89,97205(2002)] have proposed a new ground state structure for the half-doped manganites R0.5Ca0.5MnO3, where R is a trivalent ion like Bi,La,Pr,Sm or Y. Their proposal describes the CE magnetic structure attributed to these materials as an arrangement of dimers along the ferromagnetic Mn zig-zag chains that form it. However, the dimers' proposal is in conflict with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules, which give a coherent description of many transition metal insulating comp…
