We present deep spectrophotometry for a sample of 8 PNe and 12 HII regions in the irregular galaxy NGC 3109, to analyze the chemical composition of both types of nebulae. We present line intensities and the physical conditions and the abundances of He, O, Ne, N, S and Ar are derived, using the classical T_e-based method. We confirm our previous identification of PNe and HII regions based on photometry, except for one object that we argue is a compact HII region rather than a PN. We find that the chemical composition of the ISM in NGC 3109, as sampled by its HII regions, is remarkably uniform. The oxygen abundance is log O/H + 12 = 7.77 \pm 0.07 in this galaxy, as compared to 8.05 \pm 0.09 for the SMC. PNe show significantly higher oxygen abundances in NGC 3109: log O/H + 12 = 8.16 \pm 0.19. We argue that, similarly to what has been suggested for some of the PNe in the Magellanic Clouds and other metal-poor galaxies, oxygen in the PNe in NGC 3109 is affected by dredge up in their progenitors. This could be also the case for neon. From our analysis, we conclude that these two elements are not always a safe indicator of the chemical composition of the ISM at low metallicities. An alternative to the O and Ne enrichment in PNe is that the low metallicity in HII regions has been caused by dilution of the ISM due interaction with a neighbor galaxy about a Gyr ago.
The excitation patterns of the PNe in NGC 3109 are very different from the excitation patterns of PNe in other galaxies. This would imply that the evolution of PNe depends upon the properties of their progenitor stellar populations, which vary from galaxy to galaxy. This should affect the PN luminosity function and its use as a distance indicator.
The methods of abundance determinations in HII regions and planetary nebulae are described, with emphasis on the underlying assumptions and inherent problems. Recent results on abundances in Galactic HII regions and in Galactic and extragalactic Planetary Nebulae are reviewed.
The origin of the abundance discrepancy in nebulae is one of the key problems in the physics of photoionized nebulae. In this work we have analized a sample of Galactic and extragalactic H II regions where the abundance discrepancy have been measured, and we discuss the two main scenarios proposed to explain such discrepancy: temperature fluctuations over the observed volume of the nebulae and chemically inhomogeneous inclusions.
We have combined two epochs of Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging data with ground-based expansion velocities to determine distances to three planetary nebulae (NGC 6578, NGC 6884, and IC 2448). We used two variants of the expansion parallax technique--a gradient method and a magnification method--to determine the distances. The results from the two methods agree to within the errors. A fourth nebula was included in the study (NGC 6891), but the expansion was too small to determine the distance, and only a lower limit was obtained. This is the first paper in a series which will examine at le…
CCD observations in V, I and H$_α$ for NGC 3389 are used to present photometry of 61 HII regions. Their $α$ and $δ$ positions, diameters and their absolute luminosities have been determined. The luminosity and size distribution functions of the HII regions in NGC 3389 are discussed.
We present the results of high quality long-slit spectroscopy of planetary nebulae (PNe) and HII regions in the two dwarf irregular galaxies Sextans A and B, which belong to a small group of galaxies just outside the Local Group. In Sextans A we obtained the element abundances in its only known PN and in three HII regions with the classical Te method. The oxygen abundances in these three HII regions of Sextans A are all consistent within the individual rms uncertainties, with the average 12+log(O/H) = 7.54+/-0.06. The oxygen abundance of the PN in Sextans A is, however, significantly higher: 1…
Using ab-initio photoionization models of giant HII regions, we test methods for abundance determinations based on a direct measurement of the electron temperature, now possible even for moderate to high-metallicity objects. We find that, for metallicities larger than solar, the computed abundances deviate systematically from the real ones, generally by larger amounts for more metal-rich HII regions. We discuss the reasons for this, and present diagrams allowing the reader to better understand the various factors coming into play. We briefly discuss less classical methods to derive abundances …
We derive the molecular properties for a sample of 301 Galactic HII regions including 123 ultra compact (UC), 105 compact, and 73 diffuse nebulae. We analyze all sources within the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) of 13CO emission known to be HII regions based upon the presence of radio continuum and cm-wavelength radio recombination line emission. Unlike all previous large area coverage 13CO surveys, the GRS is fully sampled in angle and yet covers ~75 square degrees of the Inner Galaxy. The angular resolution of the GRS 46" allows us to associate molecular gas with HII regions without amb…
Spectrophotometry constitutes a unique way to obtain the whole diagnostics (density, temperature, ionic abundances) of ionized gas nebulae, thus providing invaluable information about the objects where they reside. If such nebulae are in the low excitation regime, the diagnostics have to relie on the observation of the more intense emission lines. We have compiled data for a sample of HII regions, GEHR and HII galaxies and compared them with results derived from photoionizacion models whose parameters cover the physical conditions of the nebulae. Our results confirm a lower uncertainty for the…
We report the first observation of Ly$α$ pumped molecular hydrogen emission lines in planetary nebulae. The H$_{2}$ emission observed in the ultraviolet spectra of NGC 6853 and NGC 3132 can be explained by excitation of vibrationally hot H$_{2}$ by Ly$α$ photons. Constraints are placed on the nebular Ly$α$ emission profile, as well as the molecular hydrogen temperature, column density and turbulent motion. These parameters are similar for the two nebulae, pointing to similar physical conditions in these objects. The ro-vibrational cascade following Ly$α$ pumping is predicted to have low surfac…
The spectra of the planetary nebulae NGC3242 and NGC6369 are reanalysed using spectral measurements made in the mid-infrared with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The aim is to determine the chemical composition of these objects. We also make use of International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and ground based spectra. These elliptical PNe are interesting because they are well-studied, nearby, bright objects and therefore allow a reasonably complete comparison of this type of nebulae. Abundances determined from the mid-infrared lines, which are insensitive to e…
We present a catalog of 535 planetary nebulae discovered in the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 4697, using the FORS1 Cassegrain spectrograph of the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The catalog provides positions (x, y coordinates relative to the center of light of NGC 4697, as well as RA, Dec.), and, for almost all PNs, the magnitude m(5007) and the heliocentric radial velocity in km/s.
The dust extinction towards bright HII regions in NGC 598 and NGC 5457 has been studied in detail by forming line ratios of Balmer and Paschen emission lines covering a large wavelength range. Three homogeneous models of the geometrical distribution of the emitting sources and the obscuring dust have been tested. Only for low extinctions can the data be fit by a homogeneous slab. For most of the observed HII regions the Witt et al.(1992) 'dusty nucleus' model matches the observations equally well as the usual assumption of a foreground screen, but the former implies much larger actual dust con…
We have obtained radial velocities of 68 planetary nebulae surrounding the SB0 galaxy NGC 3384 in the Leo I group, using the CTIO 4 m telescope and the Rutgers Fabry-Perot interferometer. The PN system exhibits a well-ordered rotation field aligned with the photometric axes of the galaxy. The rotation curve is flat from about 2 kpc until at least 7 kpc. Our results imply that at least a third of the dynamical mass of the NGC 3379/3384 system may be accounted for in the two bright galaxies.
Spectroscopic observations obtained with the VLT of one planetary nebula (PN) in Sextans A and of five PNe in Sextans B and of several HII regions (HII) in these two dwarf irregular galaxies are presented. The extended spectral coverage, from 320.0 to 1000.0nm, and the large telescope aperture allowed us to detect a number of emission lines, covering more than one ionization stage for several elements (He, O, S, Ar). The electron temperature (Te) diagnostic [OIII] line at 436.3 nm was measured in all six PNe and in several HII allowing for an accurate determination of the ionic and total chemi…
We consider the possibility of cluster membership for 13 planetary nebulae that are located in close proximity to open clusters lying in their lines of sight. The short lifetimes and low sample size of intermediate-mass planetary nebulae with respect to nearby open clusters conspire to reduce the probability of observing a true association. Not surprisingly, line of sight coincidences almost certainly exist for 7 of the 13 cases considered. Additional studies are advocated, however, for 6 planetary nebula/open cluster coincidences in which a physical association is not excluded by the availabl…
A re-analysis of the radio continuum emission from circumnuclear regions of the barred galaxies NGC 1022, 1326 & 4314 is presented. The spatial distributions of Halpha and radio continuum are similar and suggest the existence of several giant HII regions in the circumnuclear zone. The spectral indices of the HII regions, obtained with similar angular resolution and at three different wavelengths, indicate that in all three galaxies, the spectral index, alpha^6_2 >-0.1. This result suggests the existence of giant HII regions with decreasing density gradients. The average density stratifications…
Magnetic fields are an important but largely unknown ingredient of planetary nebulae. They have been detected in oxygen-rich AGB and post-AGB stars, and may play a role in the shaping of their nebulae. Here we present SCUBA sub-millimeter polarimetric observations of four bipolar planetary nebulae and post-AGB stars, including two oxygen-rich and two carbon-rich nebulae, to determine the geometry of the magnetic field by dust alignment. Three of the four sources (NGC 7027, NGC 6537 and NGC 6302) present a well-defined toroidal magnetic field oriented along their equatorial torus or disk. NGC 6…
We present optical spectra of 14 emission-line stars in M33s giant HII regions NGC 592, NGC 595 and NGC 604: five of them are known WR stars, for which we present a better quality spectrogram, eight were WR candidates based on narrow-band imagery and one is a serendipitous discovery. Spectroscopy confirms the power of interference filter imagery to detect emission-line stars down to an equivalent width of about 5 A in crowded fields. We have also used archival HST/WFPC2 images to correctly identify emission-line stars in NGC 592 and NGC 588. emission-line stars in NGC 592 and NGC 588.
This paper is the third in a series reporting on a study of carbon abundances in a carefully chosen sample of planetary nebulae representing a large range in progenitor mass and metallicity. We make use of the IUE Final Archive database containing consistently-reduced spectra to measure line strengths of C III] 1909 along with numerous other UV lines for the planetary nebulae DDDM1, IC 3568, IC 4593, NGC 6210, NGC 6720, NGC 6826, & NGC 7009. We combine the IUE data with line strengths from optical spectra obtained specifically to match the IUE slit positions as closely as possible, to determin…
We describe a pseudo-3D photoionization code, NEBU_3D and its associated visualization tool, VIS_NEB3D, which are able to easily and rapidly treat a wide variety of nebular geometries, by combining models obtained with a 1D photoionization code. We also present a tool, VELNEB_3D, which can be applied to the results of 1D or 3D photoionization codes to generate emission line profiles, position-velocity maps and 3D maps in any emission line by assuming an arbitrary velocity field. As examples of the capabilities of these new tools, we consider three very different theoretical cases. The first on…
We present a study of the kinematics of the outer regions of the early-type galaxy NGC 1316, based on radial velocity measurements of 43 planetary nebulae as well as deep integrated-light absorption line spectra. The smoothed velocity field of NGC 1316 indicates fast rotation at a distance of 16 kpc, possibly associated with an elongated feature orthogonal to the inner dust lanes. The mean square stellar velocity is approximately independent of radius, and the estimated total mass of the system is 2.6 x 10^11 M_sun within a radius of 16 kpc, implying an integrated mass-to-light ratio of M/L_B …
We have obtained optical spectrophotometry of 11 HII regions in the polar ring of NGC 2685 (the Helix galaxy), and have used these data to study the physical characteristics of the polar-ring HII regions. The HII regions have normal spectra with no suggestion of unusual density, temperature, extinction, or composition. Semi-empirical calculations yield high oxygen abundance estimates (0.8--1.1 Z-Solar) in all HII regions. This, along with the observed (B-V) color, H-alpha equivalent width, and molecular gas properties argue against the current picture in which polar rings form from tidally cap…
A photoelectric monitoring program has been applied, during the last four years, to five central stars of planetary nebulae (PNNs) with strong O\,VI $λ$ 3811--34 Å\hspace{0.1mm} emission. NGC\,6905 and, marginally, NGC\,2452, show intrinsic luminosity variations, while NGC\,7026, IC\,2003 and NGC\,1501 have constant luminosity within a few mmag. Photometric data have been analyzed with the best available packages for power--spectra reductions. Both pulsators have periods and physical characteristics well encompassed by the theoretical pulsational models relative to these stars.
We present images and high-resolution spectra of the planetary nebulae IC 2553 and NGC 5882. Spatio-kinematic modeling of the nebulae shows that they are composed of a markedly elongated inner shell, and of a less aspherical outer shell expanding at a considerably higher velocity than the inner one. Embedded in the outer shells of both nebulae are found several low-ionization knots. In IC 2553, the knots show a point-symmetric distribution with respect to the central star: one possible explanation for their formation is that they are the survivors of pre-existing point-symmetric condensations …
We present new high quality continuum-subtracted H alpha images of the grand-design galaxies NGC 157, NGC 3631, NGC 6764 and NGC 6951. We have determined the positions, angular sizes, and fluxes of their individual HII regions, and describe statistical properties of the HII region samples. We construct luminosity functions for all the HII regions in the disc and separately for arm and interarm zones for each galaxy. The slopes of the luminosity functions for the complete sample agree well with values published for other spiral galaxies of comparable morphological type. For three galaxies we de…
We present near-infrared spectroscopy of fluorescent molecular hydrogen (H_2) emission from NGC 1333, NGC 2023, NGC 2068, and NGC 7023 and derive the physical properties of the molecular material in these reflection nebulae. Our observations of NGC 2023 and NGC 7023 and the physical parameters we derive for these nebulae are in good agreement with previous studies. Both NGC 1333 and NGC 2068 have no previously-published analysis of near-infrared spectra. Our study reveals that the rotational-vibrational states of molecular hydrogen in NGC 1333 are populated quite differently from NGC 2023 and …
We report the detection of eighteen infrared reflection nebulae (IRNe) in the $J$, $H$, & $Ks$ linear polarimetric observations of the NGC 6334 massive star-formation complex, of which 16 IRNe are new discoveries. Our images cover $\sim$180 square arcminutes, one of the widest near-infrared polarization data in star-formation regions so far. These IRNe are most likely associated with embedded young OB stars at different evolutionary phases, showing a variety of sizes, morphologies, and polarization properties, which can be divided into four categories. We argue the different nebula characteris…
We have obtained X-ray observations of the bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) NGC 2346 and NGC 7026 with XMM-Newton. These observations detected diffuse X-ray emission from NGC 7026 but not from NGC 2346. The X-ray emission from NGC 7026 appears to be confined within the bipolar lobes of the PN and has spectral properties suggesting a thermal plasma emitting at a temperature of 1.1 +0.5/-0.2 times 10^6 K. The X-ray spectrum of NGC 7026 is modeled using nebular and stellar abundances to assess whether a significant amount of nebular material has been mixed into the shocked-wind, but the results of…
We use a 3D photoionization modeling tool to study the morpho-kinematic properties of the Planetary Nebula (PN) NGC 3132. We show that it is possible to reproduce the low resolution observations (spectra and images) with an ellipsoidal shell. However, high resolution observations, as those showing a density variation along the nebula and the [O III]5007 velocity profiles, definitively rule out this description. We show that a bipolar Diabolo shape with a 40 degres rotation of the symmetry axis relative to the line of sight successfully reproduces the observed images, as well as the high resolu…
We revisit Chandra observations of the planetary nebulae NGC 7027 and BD +30 3639 in order to address the question of abundance anomalies in the X-ray emitting gas. Enhanced abundances relative to solar of magnesium (Mg) for NGC 7027 and neon (Ne) for BD +30 3639 are required to fit their X-ray spectra, whereas observations at optical and infrared wavelengths show depleted Mg and Ne in these systems. We attribute the enhancement of Mg in NGC 7027 in the X-ray, relative to the optical, to the depletion of Mg onto dust grains within the optical nebula. For BD +30 3639, we speculate that the high…
Low dispersion spectra have been obtained of five planetary nebulae in the elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus-A) from the catalogue of Hui et al. (1993). The planetary nebulae (PN) cover a range of galactocentric radius from 7.9 to 17.7 arcmin (8 to 18Kpc). The spectra display typical emission lines of H I, He I, He II, [O III], [N II] and [S II] and appear very similar to high excitation planetary nebulae in the Galaxy. This implies that, from a stellar evolution viewpoint, there should be no peculiar effects introduced by considering the bright cut-off of the PN luminosity function for di…
The molecular components of three giant HII regions (NGC 5461, NGC 5462, NGC 5471) in the galaxy M101 are investigated with new observations from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, the NRAO 12-meter, and the Owens Valley millimeter array. Of the three HII regions, only NGC 5461 had previously been detected in CO emission. We calculate preliminary values for the molecular mass of the GMCs in NGC 5461 by assuming a CO-to-H_2 factor (X factor) and then compare these values with the virial masses. We conclude that the data in this paper demonstrate for the first time that the value of X may decrea…
The study of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the nearby post-merger elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Cen A) now has a history of nearly twenty years. As the nearest giant elliptical, it is a prime target for extragalactic PN studies. These studies have addressed many issues including the galaxy's distance, dark matter content, halo structure, merger history, and stellar populations. We review the main PN studies that have been conducted in NGC 5128, and introduce a new study where we measure the [NII]/H-alpha ratio for 134 PNe. We find that there are no PNe in our sample that are obviously of Type I, su…
We have obtained deep optical, long-slit spectrophotometry of the Galactic HII regions M 17, NGC 3576 and of the Magellanic Cloud HII regions 30 Doradus, LMC N11B and SMC N66, recording the optical recombination lines (ORLs) of CII, NII and OII. Temperature-insensitive ORL C2+/O2+ and N2+/O2 ratios are obtained for all nebulae except SMC N66. The ORL C2+/O2+ ratios show remarkable agreement within each galactic system, while also being in agreement with the corresponding CEL ratios. For all five nebulae, the O2+/H+ abundance derived from multiple OII ORLs is found to be higher than the corresp…
We present high spatial resolution (0$\farcs$3) polarimetric images in the $H$ and $K$ bands and direct images in the $L'$ and $M'$ bands of the NGC 6334 V infrared nebulae. The images show complex structures including the multi-shells and various knots in the nebulae. The appearances and colors of the eastern and western nebulae differ considerably. Our polarization images also show differences between the illuminating sources of the nebulae: the eastern nebula is illuminated by a deeply embedded mid-infrared source, KDJ 4, and the western nebula by our newly detected near-infrared source, WN…
The origin of the abundance discrepancy is one of the key problems in the physics of photoionized nebula. In this work, we analize and discuss data for a sample of Galactic and extragalactic HII regions where this abundance discrepancy has been determined. We find that the abundance discrepancy factor (ADF) is fairly constant and of the order of 2 in all the available sample of HII regions. This is a rather different behaviour than that observed in planetary nebulae, where the ADF shows a much wider range of values. We do not find correlations between the ADF and the O/H, O++/H+ ratios, the io…
We report the discovery of three proplyd-like structures in the giant HII region NGC 3603. The emission nebulae are clearly resolved in narrow-band and broad-band HST/WFPC2 observations in the optical and broad-band VLT/ISAAC observations in the near-infrared. All three nebulae are tadpole shaped, with the bright ionization front at the head facing the central cluster and a fainter ionization front around the tail pointing away from the cluster. Typical sizes are 6,000 A.U. x 20,000 A.U. The nebulae share the overall morphology of the proplyds (``PROto PLanetarY DiskS'') in Orion, but are 20 t…
NGC 3576 (G291.28-0.71; l=291.3o, b=-0.7o) and NGC 3603 (G291.58-0.43; l=291.6o, b=-0.5o) are optically visible, luminous HII regions located at distances of 3.0 kpc and 6.1 kpc, respectively. We present 3.4 cm Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of these two sources in the continuum and the H90a, He90a, C90a and H113b recombination lines with an angular resolution of 7" and a velocity resolution of 2.6 km/s. All four recombination lines are detected in the integrated profiles of the two sources. Broad radio recombination lines are detected in both NGC 3576 (DV_{FWHM}>= 50 k…
We present photometric and kinematic information obtained by measuring 197 planetary nebulae (PNs) discovered in the flattened Fornax elliptical galaxy NGC 1344 (also known as NGC 1340) with an on-band, off-band, grism + on-band filter technique. We build the PN luminosity function (PNLF) and use it to derive a distance modulus m-M=31.4, slightly smaller than, but in good agreement with, the surface brightness fluctuation distance. The PNLF also provides an estimate of the specific PN formation rate: 6x10^-12 PNs per year per solar luminosity. Combining the positional information from the on-b…
We present a study of the structure and kinematics of the triple-shell planetary nebula NGC 7662 based on long-slit echelle spectroscopic observations and HST archival narrow-band images. The structure of NGC 7662 main nebula consists of a central cavity surrounded by two concentric shells. The bright inner shell has a non-negligible thickness and the highest density in the nebula. The outer shell is filled with nebular material whose density profile shows a propto 1/r drop-off in the inner regions of the shell and flattens in the outermost regions. Both the inner and the outer shells can be d…
Continuing our series of papers on the three-dimensional (3-D) structures of and accurate distances to Planetary Nebulae (PNe), we present our study of the planetary nebula NGC6781. For this object we construct a 3-D photoionization model and, using the constraints provided by observational data from the literature we determine the detailed 3-D structure of the nebula, the physical parameters of the ionizing source and the first precise distance. The procedure consists in simultaneously fitting all the observed emission line morphologies, integrated intensities and the 2-D density map from the…
NGC 1360 is a large planetary nebula (PN) without an obvious shell morphology. We have analyzed H-alpha images and high-dispersion echelle spectra of NGC 1360 in order to construct spatio-kinematic models and to determine its density distribution. The best-fit model indicates that NGC 1360 is a prolate ellipsoidal shell whose major axis is twice as long as its minor axis and is tilted by 60 arcdeg with respect to the line of sight. The large kinematic age of the shell, ~10,000 yr, and the low density of the nebula, <130 H-atom cm^-3, imply that NGC 1360 is an evolved PN and has begun to merge …
Images obtained with the ESO VLT and FORS1 in [O III] 5007 on- and off-band as well as r_Gunn filters are analyzed to search for Planetary Nebula (PN) candidates in the dwarf irregular NGC 3109. In the continuum-subtracted [O III] 5007 on-band images, a large number of emission-line regions were detected. We describe the criteria employed in order to distinguish PN candidates from compact HII regions, finding that the sizes and the properties of the ionizing stars are the most unambiguous discriminators for separating the two classes. Based upon these criteria, we have found 20 PN candidates f…
The galaxy NGC6384 has been observed with an IPCS through H alpha and [NII] narrow-band interference filters for direct imagery with the 2.6 m Byurakan telescope. We studied main physical parameters of identified 98 HII regions, their diameter and luminosity functions, as well [NII]/H alpha ratio distribution. The integrated distribution function of the HII region diameters can be well fitted by the exponential function. The characteristic diameter has the value (Do = 217 pc) predicted for a galaxy of its measured absolute luminosity. The luminosity function of HII regions has double power law…
The Galactic HII region NGC 2579 has stayed undeservedly unexplored due to identification problems which persisted until recently. Both NGC 2579 and its companion ESO 370-9 have been misclassified as planetary or reflection nebula, confused with each other and with other objects. Due to its high surface brightness, high excitation, angular size of few arcminutes and relatively low interstellar extinction, NGC 2579 is an ideal object for investigations in the optical range. Located in the outer Galaxy, NGC 2579 is an excellent object for studying the Galactic chemical abundance gradients. In th…
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the region NGC 2467, and use these observations to determine how the environment of an HII region affects the process of star formation. Our observations comprise IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um) and MIPS (24 um) maps of the region, covering approximately 400 square arcminutes. The images show a region of ionized gas pushing out into the surrounding molecular cloud, powered by an O6V star and two clusters of massive stars in the region. We have identified as candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) 45 sources in NGC 2467 with infrared excess…
We report on advances in the study of the cores of NGC6302 and NGC6537 using infrared grating and echelle spectroscopy. In NGC6302, emission lines from species spanning a large range of ionization potential, and in particular [SiIX]3.934um, are interpreted using photoionization models (including CLOUDY), which allow us to reestimate the central star's temperature to be about 250000K. All of the detected lines are consistent with this value, except for [AlV] and [AlVI]. Aluminium is found to be depleted to one hundredth of the solar abundance, which provides further evidence for some dust being…
We have observed NGC 3603, the most massive visible HII region known in the Galaxy, with ANTU(VLT1)/ISAAC in the near-infrared (NIR) J_s, H, and K_s bands. Our observations are the most sensitive observations made to date of this dense starburst region, allowing us to investigate with unprecedented quality its low-mass stellar population. Our mass limit to stars detected in all three bands is 0.1 Mo for a pre-main sequence star of age 0.7 Myr. The overall age of the pre-main sequence stars in the core region of NGC 3603 has been derived from isochrone fitting in the colour-magnitude diagram, l…
Long-slit echellograms of the high excitation planetary nebula NGC1501, reduced according to the methodology developed by Sabbadin et al. (2000a, b), allowed us to obtain the ``true'' distribution of the ionized gas in the eight nebular slices covered by the spectroscopic slit. A 3-D rendering procedure is described and applied, which assembles the tomographic maps and rebuilds the spatial structure. The images of NGC 1501, as seen in 12 directions separated by 15 deg, form a series of stereoscopic pairs giving surprising 3-D views in as many directions. The main nebula consists of an almost o…
$UBV$ photometry is used to re-identify the OB associations which power the two most luminous HII regions in M33, NGC 604 and NGC 595. There is a significant difference (2-3 Myr) in the ages of the most recent star formation episode in these two regions, while NGC 595 also has undergone a prior episode of star formation (10-15 Myr ago). These data, combined with the presence of molecular clouds in the heart of NGC 604, suggest that molecular clouds may survive at least one intense episode of massive star formation. The star formation efficiencies (mass of stars per mass of gas) of these two HI…
I present the results of time-resolved photometry of a selection of central stars of planetary nebulae. The study reveals periodic variability in two of the eight central stars observed, those of NGC 6026 and NGC 6337. The variability matches that expected from a binary system in which a hot primary irradiates a cooler secondary star.
We present the results of mapping the planetary nebula NGC6369 using multiple long slit spectra taken with the CTIO 1.5m telescope. We create two dimensional emission line images from our spectra, and use these to derive fluxes for 17 lines, the Halpha/Hbeta extinction map, the [SII] line ratio density map, and the [NII] temperature map of the nebula. We use our photoionization code constrained by these data to determine the distance, the ionizing star characteristics, and show that a clumpy hour-glass shape is the most likely three-dimensional structure for NGC6369. Note that our knowledge of…
We present an analysis of the integrated Halpha emission line profiles for the HII region population of the spiral galaxies NGC 1530, NGC 6951 and NGC 3359. We show that 70% of the line profiles show two or three Gaussian components. The relations between the Halpha luminosity and non-thermal line width for the HII regions of the three galaxies are studied and compared with the relation found taken all the HII regions of the three galaxies as a single distribution. A clearer envelope in non-thermal line width is found when only those HII regions with non-thermal line width bigger than 13kms ar…
We measure reddenings to HII regions in NGC 2903, NGC 1512, M51, NGC 4449 and NGC 6946 from Hubble Space Telescope Pa alpha and H alpha images. Extinctions range from A_V ~ 5 - 0 depending upon the galaxy. For the galaxies with HST images in both lines, NGC 2903, NGC 1512 and M51, the Pa alpha and H alpha emission are almost identical in morphology which implies that little emission from bright HII regions is hidden from view by regions of comparatively high extinction. The scatter in the measured extinctions is only +- 0.5 mag. We compare the reddenings we measure in five galaxies using the P…
Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) images have revealed that the X-ray emitting regions of the molecule-rich young planetary nebulae (PNs) BD+30 3639 (BD+30) and NGC 7027 are much more asymmetric than their optical nebulosities. To evaluate the potential origins of these X-ray asymmetries, we analyze X-ray images of BD+30, NGC 7027, and another planetary nebula resolved by CXO, NGC 6543, within specific energy bands. Image resolution has been optimized by sub-pixel repositioning of individual X-ray events. The resulting subarcsecond-resolution images reveal that the soft (E < 0.7 keV) X-ray emiss…
High resolution optical spectra of HD 37903 and HD 147009, which illuminate the reflection nebulae, NGC 2023 and vdB 102, were obtained for comparison with our results for HD 200775 and NGC 7023. Ground-based measurements of the molecules, CH, C$_2$, and CN, and the atoms, Na I and K I, were analyzed to extract physical conditions in the foreground cloud. Estimates of the gas density, gas temperature and flux of ultraviolet radiation were derived and were compared with the results from infrared and radio studies of the main molecular cloud. The conditions are similar to those found in studies …
The chemical abundances of neon and sulfur for 25 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds are presented. These abundances have been derived using mainly infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The implications for the chemical evolution of these elements are discussed. A comparison with similarly obtained abundances of Galactic PNe and HII regions and Magellanic Clouds HII regions is also given. The average neon abundances are 6.0x10(-5) and 2.7x10(-5) for the PNe in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds respectively. These are ~1/3 and 1/6 of the average abundances of Galacti…
We present the first integral field spectroscopy observations of the two planetary nebulae NGC3242 and NGC4361 with the VIMOS instrument attached to VLT-UT3. By co-adding a large number of spaxels we reach an emission line detection limit of 5.E-18 erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} arcsec^{-2}. In the case of NGC3242, we succeed in determining some properties of the halo. The radial surface brightness profile in [OIII] implies increasing mass loss before the formation of the PN. Traces of the mysterious 'rings' are clearly visible. We find for the first time an apparent temperature gradient across a halo: fr…
We present Chandra X-ray images for the interacting galaxy pair NGC 7714/5. In addition to the unresolved starburst nucleus, a variable point source with L(X) ~ 10^40 erg/s was detected 1.5" (270 pc) northwest of the nucleus, coincident with a blue, extremely optically-luminous (M(V) ~ -14.1) point source on HST images. Eleven more candidate point-like ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are seen, two >= 10^40 erg/s. Ten of these are associated with interaction-induced features but only two with star formation. We found diffuse emission with L(X) ~ 3 X 10^40 erg/s extending 11" (1.9 kpc) to the…
We report on observations of four early-type galaxies performed with the Rutgers Fabry-Perot in order to search for Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in these systems. The aim is to use the PNe as kinematic tracers of the galaxy potential. We describe our data reduction and analysis procedure and show that the proper calibration of our detection statistic is crucial in getting down to our limiting magnitude of $m_{5007} = 26.1$. In the case of the two Leo galaxies we find moderately sized samples: 54 PNe in NGC 3379 and 50 PNe in NGC 3384; NGC 4636 (2 PNe) and NGC 1549 (6 PNe) are included for completen…
